    The colours and ease of use look fantastic.
    What stood out for me in this video is to keep the shutter speed above 200 for the stabilisation. I would have always gone down the standard shutter rule rate so increasing it is something I never would have thought of, thank you.

    Hi all. For me, 200 shutter is a real minimum for stabilisation. It works only if you really take care of limiting your moves. I would rather set it to 400 to have a stable image when walking. Riding a motorcycle, 640 is a real minimum, but 800 is the best. Now, if I use my NDs, it’s only with a static camera (or almost static) to follow the 180° rule in manual settings. I would had that I find better to switch Rocksteady OFF and accept some natural jitter that trying to keep it with a low shutter because the result of a failed stabilisation gives unwatchable image as it’s not « natural ».

    But I have one or two questions to something I get a misconception: sharpness & noise cancellation - I mainly record in low light surroundings so should I keep both at -2 or rather NC at 0 or 1? I just wanr to get sharp and clean visuals but sharpness adds the corniness on screen.
    Thanks in advance

    • @RomaFedorov

      @@RomaFedorov Greetings Roma,
      very much appreciated for the quick response. Well there is the thing - I don't see a huge difference but I just ask myself 'Why do some good videographers curse sharpness and NR?'
      Is it because they rather work with post editing or is the function adding too mich distortion or make it look artificial?
      Thanks in advance

    • @irarabesc
      @irarabesc 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Necrotias, in-camera sharpening and noise reduction are bad if you are going to post-process your footage because they distort the raw image and it might lead to information loss and image artifacts when editing, if you are not going to post-process the footage and going to use camera video as-is than it's completely ok to set in-camera sharpening and noise reduction on your taste, just note that high noise reduction makes image softer and eats details and over-sharpening usually looks worse than under-sharpening

    Am I crazy for thinking an action camera can replace a mirrorless for studio and general videography? Yes you lose some quality and things like the bokeh effect, but the versatility and portability is insane, especially when I'm already carrying an action camera on my helmet (motorcycle). The mirrorless is big and tripod bulky. Another great video, Roma!

  • @TaoCovillault
    @TaoCovillault 10 месяцев назад +3

    Very nice result 😊
    However, I am questionning the use of ND filters in this case...
    You say you shoot 25p, but keep the shutter above 1/ 200 to avoid ghosting due to stabilisation, fair enough.
    But then the ND filter is pretty useless because anyway you are not following the 180° rule...
    So even tho you reduce the light, you actually DON'T WANT to have the correct motion blur, therefore, the only use of the ND filter in this case is to crank up your ISOs, which nobody wants 😅
    Otherwise, awesome work, I'll follow you 😊🙏✨

    • @RomaFedorov
      @RomaFedorov  10 месяцев назад

      Cheers! Even though I don't strictly follow to the 180-degree shutter rule, I think shooting as close to a 1/200 shutter speed as possible produces plenty of motion blur in the image while still providing excellent stabilization results. And I won't be able to do so without ND filters.

    • @TaoCovillault
      @TaoCovillault 10 месяцев назад +4

      @@RomaFedorov Actually, following the 180 rules would be 1/50 (in 25p) so, by setting it up to 1/200 (and for good reason) your shutter is 4 times higher than the 180 rules.
      At 1/200 you have absolutely no motion blur on "normal" speed motion, especially with a wide angle.
      You can check that on still pictures:
      1/200s is enough to get sharp image of people walking or even running (on wide angle and depending the distance).
      The angle being so wide, I am pretty sure that even a car driving around 50-60km/h would be totally sharp.
      Don't get me wrong, I am also blocking my shutter at 1/200s, I am just saying that the use of a ND filter is not really adding anything in this case. This is precisely why this is good for the digital stabilisation to work properly, because since the blur is eliminated, the algorithm can track the pixels better.
      From there, shootinc 1/200 or 1/1000 would add or substract more motion blur.
      Or only in very special case (for example if the action cam is only few centimeters above the road on cars/bicycle or skate board fir example).
      Increasing the relative speed of the foreground to the camera.
      But for most "normal" movements, like the one you showcase in your video, the ND Filter is more an annoyance than anything else.

      @@TaoCovillault You are exactly right. I like this video and i think Roma does a great job with the A4 but the ND filters are not necessary. I bought ND filters too, never use them because they mess up the stabilization, and locking the shutter speed makes the iso go nuts too XD So they're kinda pointless tbh. Adding motion blur digitally is much better and it doesn't ruin the footage, which ND filters might do if the light changes dramatically.

    Thanks for the video! This looks like a great little action camera. I have a GoPro Hero 7 and it does ok for my videos. I mainly place it on my vehicle and drive off-road trails in the mountains. I also run a DJI Mini-3 Pro and shoot in D-Cinelike and I want to make my workflow easier and thinking about switching to this Action 4. I like that you use manual exposure but does it do good enough in auto exposure for videos like this? Sure you can F around with manual exposure, manual WB, negative sharpness, manual iso, ND filters and all that to record a stationary, or slow and controlled shot.
    BUT! You loose the core purpose of Action camera, which is: press-rec and forget, waterproof device. Yes, you can dig a grave with a spoon, but there are better tools for that. Action cameras in general ARE NOT purpose maid for "cinematic" shots, and considering that ND filter renders your camera basically useless by disabling RS and Waterproofing, just to make shutter longer defies it's core purpose.

    Great video! And are the settings the same for night situations? And about the free Action 4 D-Log M LUT, what is this? Something for Final Cut Pro?

    • @RomaFedorov
      @RomaFedorov  10 месяцев назад +2

      The settings are mostly the same for night conditions, but the exposure method is a bit different. I’ll make a video about that in the future..
      The free D-Log M LUT adds saturation and contrast to flat D-Log M footage, which makes the footage look more “normal” and not as flat. The LUT works with any editing software that supports LUTs.
