If the spring pops, don't worry, you can rewind it and get it into the white holder. You will need a good table vise and a pair of needle nose vise grips. Simply wind the spring by hand, holding it tightly in your fingers as you wind it tighter by pulling and winding the circle you're forming. WEAR EYE PROTECTION! Once you have the spring in a tight enough circle that will fit into the white holder, carefully place it in your vise and tighten the vise to keep the spring from unwinding. Then, with the end loop and tail sticking out, push the tail in line with the spring windings, hold down, and place your vise grips onto the wound spring and tail. The assembly must be just at the tip of the vise grips. Loosen your table vise and line up the spring loop with the hole in the white holder. Carefully apply pressure to the whole spring as you release your vise grips. If you have done everything correctly, the spring will pop into the holder, expand, and be held perfectly. It takes some practice, I know. The first time I did this procedure, it took me about a half hour to get it to work. I can now set a spring in ten minutes, or less. Good luck!

Thanks very much, I'd but my spring in backwards, and then when I tried to correct my mistake, it sprung loose, as springs are won't to do. But I was not certain which way was correct. It has to (the start gear) spin clockwise to start the engine, correct?
And I didn't know about using the little notch, thanks very much.
    Regards,
    Peter
