Thanks for watching :)
I love how you summarize the process at the beginning. you deserve more views
Thanks Tessa! Glad to have you watching! :)
Steaming the tempeh also tenderizes it and it makes it more porous and permeable to marinades. Thank you for this video!
Yes! I love how the texture changes. So good... :) Thanks for watching!
i am temptehd to try this recipe :D
It's so good! I hope you try it and love it! :) Thank you so much for watching

I must always have a batch of tofu bacon in my freezer. Soooo delicious and yes, addicting. I add it to everything. So easy to make.
we have a similar recipe here in indonesia. it is called tempe bacem, it is very good but sometimes considered village food.
Good to know! We absolutely love tempeh which I know is traditionally Indonesian. That's so cool that you're watching us from there! :) Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed your video. I liked that you were well prepared for the recipe, explained it simply and thoroughly. The kitchen was not only very clean, but attractive as well. steaming is the secret! great tip. if it doesnt get steamed, it’s really bitter.
1AM here (Indonesia) and I'm eating my tempeh bacon now. Yumm! 😍 Thanks for the recipe!
Thanks for watching!
so this is the halal version of bacon
I'm not a vegan or vegetarian but tempe is life! I'd definitely gonna try this, except from maybe I'll change the maple syrup with honey because maple syrup is extremely expensive in where I live.
Thanks for the recipe!
I hope you love it Yusaria! Feel free to use agave or molasses as well :) Any liquid sweetener should work
Try to see if you can order Maple syrup on Amazon, Walmart or Target. Depending on what state or country you live in it may be way cheaper than a store.
Honey is not considered vegan if you are a vegan for ethical reasons.
Thanks for this.....I was looking for tempeh bacon recipe which included steaming. For many years I wondered why tempeh was so much better @restaurants. Not often mentioned, but so important. This looks so good, going to get slicing and steaming! Cheers!
Yay! Thank you so much! Yup... Steaming it is key :) Hope it turns out great!

Looks delicious! I think I’ll try without frying in oil (which I know is what makes them crispy) and just bake it or try in air fryer.
Hi Dianna! So sorry I had missed your comment somehow! Feel free to adapt it to what suits you. although not the same, I think you might get a good result in the air fryer! Hope it turned out great!

Hi Sandy! Most tempeh is made from soy. Have you tried finding garbanzo tempeh?
Brownble I am making some right now. I am reading that it's superior to store bought.
Yay!! :)

A great looking recipe and your hosting is fabulous. You should have a show on mainstream media. You would be a great advocate for vegan recipe and cooking programmes. There are way too many meat recipe programmes as it is. It's about time we had a decent representation.

well in indonesia, we call it "tempeh bacem" so basically we eat vegan bacon everday
I love it Denis! :) vegan bacon every day sounds pretty good to me. Ha ha! Thanks for watching!
I just made it!! It’s delicious! Yummm. But, Denis it’s totally different to tempe bacem we have in Indonesia. The taste, texture, the ingredients are different. This one is very simple. Anyway, i love both.

So i made this and yumm so good! Thank you!
Anyone tips on how to keep them crispy?
Hi there! So sorry I had missed your comment!! The best tip is to cook and eat them right away, but you will regain some crispness by reheating these in the oven or better yet in an air-fryer. They won't be as crispy as when made fresh but you will regain some of that texture. Thanks for watching!
Have made this recipe twice, it’s really good and easy.
I love to hear that!! Thank you so much for watching and for making this :) It's a big staple at our house too, we love it!
Steam it first that’s a good tip thank you.
Hi there! Yes, always steam before proceeding with any recipe. Thanks for watching and so sorry I had missed your comment! :)

Yay! I'm so so glad you tried this! Thank you so much for writing back to let us know... and thank you for watching
what about using an air fryer?
You could. It just wouldn't be as cripsy
A restaurant near me has the best tempeh bacon. It’s soft and pliable (ie. doesn’t crumble apart like tempeh often tends to do). Is this similar to that? I want it to be soft.
Hi there! You can absolutely make it soft and pliable if you use a bit less oil and don't let the strips get overly crispy in the first stage (before you add the marinade). More oil and more browning will give you a crispier version, less oil and less browning will give you a tender version. It definitely won't crumble as you're creating a seal when you brown it. I hope you get the chance to make it and I hope you love it!
@@brownbleso I have tried this a few times. I love the crispy texture of fried tempeh, but by soft and pliable I almost mean you don’t even notice the texture of the beans. It’s like they form a homogenous layer of softer texture while still holding together. It’s hard to explain. It’s no soft like tofu, but softer than the sort of dry texture tempeh usually has. I’ve tried steaming, boiling, etc. and no matter what the tempeh still has a toothsome texture that’s different than this restaurant gets. I’ve also tried the packaged tempeh bacon and was so grossed out by the flavor and the texture was kind of slimy.
With baked beans, chickpea scrambled, roasted tomatoes and a slice of bread. A cup of tea on the side
Oh my goodness! Now I want exactly that... everything you said! So delicious.
A Hillshire Farm ad before this video. Nioce.
O.o tempeh needs to be steamed?? Great video- maybe my next tempeh dish will actually be edible now lol
Hi Max! Yes! Definitely steam it before using it in any recipe. That's the secret! :)
Hi! I just finished cooking this and i love it. Thanks for sharing your recipe 💚
One thing i noticed though is that the tempeh absorbs a lot of oil. I don’t know maybe there’s something i missed or should do. Any advice please? Thank you 😊
Tempeh does absorb oil. It is its nature. Normally we deep-fried it.
Ah yes, crispy tempe bacem. I'll try
Thank you for watching!
in Indonesia we called that tempe bacem
Yes! I didn't know that when making this recipe but several of our Indonesian followers have told me this is such a staple in your country! How delicious! :) Thanks for watching!
this was a winner
Yay! So glad you liked it!
this is "tempe bacem" Indonesian food
Thanks Fauzent! Lots of our Indonesian viewers have told me about tempe bacem. Love this dish so much, only of course this is the Westernised version of making tempeh into a tempeh bacon-y dish :) Can't wait to try the real thing if I ever go to Indonesia! Thanks for watching!
Yup tapi bacem lebih ke manis.. klo bacon lebih ke asin karna pake soy sauce, kecap asin
Mirip juga ya namanyab😄
@@brownble tempe bacem is sweet than your bacon tempeh that i presumably more into savoury bcuz you are using soy sauce (internationally, soy sauce is more salty than our local indonesian soy sauce that was more sweet). Usually, tempeh bacem is a nice way of introducing kids to tempeh because of it's sweetness.
eat it with sambel terasi 😁😂🤣
Taste test! Just subbed nice video :)
Thanks so much Jesse! :)
Try tempeh curry. It's heaven.
do many people in america (im guessing you are from there) consume tempe? Im from tempe originated land and my curiosity rise a question of how tempe introduced and accepted (i saw many vegan channel about making tempe) in other countries ? (because most of indonesians hate to migrate, unlike Chinese or Indians, we love our land so much that its not easy to leave)
Ibrahim! So glad to have someone from Indonesia watching! I've lived in the US (now live in Spain), but I'm originally from Venezuela. Tempeh has become incredibly popular in recent years as a meat alternative for vegans and vegetarians. I love tempeh! Its texture, how nutritious and delicious it is. Definitely something you can be super proud of and that as a vegan I can tell you I love to cook with! It's very popular in Spain too, especially in vegan and vegetarian restaurants. Thank you so much for watching!
It's not very popular yet.
Most Americans have never heard of it but it is sold in health food stores and places like whole foods just about everywhere. I prefer it to tofu.
Ibrahim Abdurrhman No. Most Americans have never heard of tempe.
There are many Indonesians in Houston Texas near my city and they do migrate there or they go to Houston university. I also make my own tempeh that’s why I’m here trying other ways to cook them. Local stores do sell tempeh but they are all pasteurized frozen and expensive.
Nice video. Where did you purchase your mugs hooks from. Thanks.
Thanks so much! The hooks and shelves are all from IKEA :)
Wow great idea. However can you find away to do this without cooking the Tempeh 3 times. Is there away to prepare the bacon but Not to fry it twice.?. ??
Sure! Get a big pan that fits all your pieces and add the liquid marinade right after you've fried up the pieces. The only reason I did it twice was because they didn't all fit in the pan and I wanted to get all the pieces golden brown before the marinade :) If you're making a small batch or have a large pan, you're all set! Hope this helps!
If you don't want to fry it twice then marinate the tempeh in the fridge over night.
Does anyone know a healthier substitute for soy? I would appreciate it.
Any tips on how to cook these without oil?
Hi Alexis! You can bake these in the oven under the broiler until golden without the use of oil. They won't get as crispy but you'll certainly get all the flavors! If you have an air fryer I'm sure that would be delicious too! :)
I love bacon, but would love a healthier option, so I'll give this a try.
Yay! I hope you love it! Thanks for watching :)
Tempeh is from Indonesia and we also do have the caramelization process only we cut it more thicker, we called it "tempeh bacem"
Although it looks good your pieces are too large and you overcrowded the pan to make it really crispy as you mentioned?
Hi there! Thanks for watching! Yes, you can cook them in separate batches for even more crispness.
Instead of steaming the tempeh, may microwaving it with some water might work??
Hi Ben, yes, it should work. So would simply simmering in a bit of water or vegetable broth.
i already subscribe to your channel 😊
That is so sweet of you Patricia! Thank you so much for your support! It means the world!
At what step would you be able to freeze it? And how?
You can freeze it after the steaming stage, or even after the tempeh bacon is done. Just know that after freezing, that crispness will be lost and the pieces will soften, so simply fry them up in a non-stick pan with a bit of oil to help them regain some of that texture. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Could you substitute the liquid smoke with maybe smoked paprika to get a similar effect?
Hi Lily! It wouldn't be exactly the same but it will give you a hint of smoky flavor. An even better alternative is any kind of smoked salt. It's like regular salt but black and wonderfully smoky. It's the closest to liquid smoke that I've found. But this recipe will be yummy even with just the soy sauce and maple. Hope you love it!
Nice! What can the soy sauce be substitutes for? Ty.
Hi there! You can use tamari soy sauce to keep it gluten free if the issue you have with soy sauce is gluten, or you can also use coconut aminos. It won't be the same with the coconut aminos but it is always a great substitute if you can't consume soy and are using chickpea tempeh for example. Thanks so much for watching!
I've seen people make tempeh bacon marinating it overnight and then frying or baking it. This is how many more steps marinating and so on and I have badly nerve damage hands so your method would be easier for me. How long will this keep in the refrigerator?
Hi Elizabeth! Yes! This is far fewer steps! I'd say these last about 4-5 days in the fridge :)
hey do you have any suggestions to getting rid of this distinct almost bitter like natural taste tempeh has?
Hi Andrea! Yes! Absolutely. Tempeh should always be steamed for 12 minutes before using it in any recipe, or, alternatively, simmered in boiling water or vegetable broth (at a soft boil so it doesn't break apart). The flavor changes completely after doing this. Then you pat it dry and use it in whatever recipe you want to make. I hope it helps! :)
where u from? And what is liquid smoke?
tempe bacem yuuuu
Thanks for watching Bramantya!

Tempe the Best food in thè world
Glad there's another tempeh addict around here! It's the best! :) Thanks for watching!
Which sub i can used for soy sauce
Hi Jaafar, you can use tamari soy sauce if what you need is to keep the recipe gluten free. Some people like liquid aminos as a soy sauce substitute but I've personally never tried it. Thanks for watching!
I find liquid smoke to be really strong and overpowering. Is one teaspoon correct? Seems like a lot. Please, someone let me know. I really want to try something new.
Hi Lauretta, yes, the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon but feel free to use a bit less if you find it overpowering :)
@@brownble okay, thanks, you've convinced me! Not had a BLT in so long, I'll get the liquid smoke today! Also where do you buy that nice chunk of tempeh? All I seem to find are those long skinny packages.
Can you also boil the tempeh or is steaming better?
Hi there! Yes, you can also cook it in water, but preferably not at a boil but at a lower simmer, that way there's less movement in the pot and it will hold its shape better. But both steaming and simmering will work in releasing the bitterness. Hope it turns out great!
could I Airfryer instead of panfry?
Hi there! I've never tried this one in an air fryer but feel free to experiment! I'm about to get one myself so I'll give this one a try and if it works we'll make a video and post it here :)
Brownble thanks for the reply. I haven’t tried it in the airfryer yet but have turned out brilliantly panfried
