    Ive had this idea in mind for a battlefield style game, but each squad has radios and proximity chat. The game would be in a pastel low poly style for personality, performance, and ease of development. Imagine those chaotic final stand moments with your freinds in VR. Standing against an army with tanks, planes, helecopters, defensing the objective with everything you have left

      I'd also like to note that using Oculus Link (you don't even need the official cable, or any cable at all if you instead use Air Link), the Quest 2 can run all Rift apps and do all, well, Rift things.
      This is why many advise staying away from the Rift S, as the Quest 2 is technically a superior headset (aside from comfort which can be remedied with aftermarket accessories if it bothers you) at the same price that does all of the same stuff.
      Anyway, great video, more devs is really what VR needs right now

    I am specifically excited about UI/UX design for virtual reality. I'm very comfortable with coding like yourself and don't necessarily want to work with design applications but I'm fascinated by user experience challenges in VR. I'm also familiar with C#, but with mainly with typescript and web tech. Do you think I could skip some steps and jump pretty quick into throwing together assets to develop UX flows with unity and build some kind of portfolio? That is, without going down an FPS path first.

  • @TheThorns
    @TheThorns 2 года назад +2

    Couple of things he does not tell you.
    1. Every engine, every platform and every headset I was using 8 years ago in VR development is obsolete. You will have to learn and then relearn everything every 2 or 3 years. Some stuff translates okay like unity, but even going from unity 4 to 5 and using different SDK's proved to me that I had to pretty much start from scratch.
    2. So you have a great idea for an App or game. If it is actually good be prepared to defend your creations, because others will clone , steal, and do everything under the sun to discredit you or do everything in their power to make you fail so they can come out on top.
    3. Cost, if you are not pirating software and don't already have the hardware then you will be spending some cash to test on multiple platforms and headsets.

One of the main issues I'd be concerned about is it being updated to whatever the current Unity XR technology is and not getting outdated.

    A bit of advice for newcomers; if you "try" VR using a smartphone, you will be experiencing a tiny slice of what is possible with a purpose-built headset. Keep in mind that the "wow" factor is still there with a lesser device, but is nowhere near the immersion you will experience with a full 6 DOF rig.
    I was hooked by experimenting with phones and headset adapters, like Google cardboard and others, because I saw possibilities that wouldn't be limited by the state of the art, even as limited as it was at the time, because I was thinking about AR and industrial training applications.
    Three years ago, I bought the Oculus "GO" which was a huge improvement compared to even the best smartphone/headset adapter, but with no cameras AR development was out of the question. But while trying other experiences within the limited 3 DOF "GO" environment, I was always wishing I could "lean over and look over the side" of a roller coaster car, or whatever.
    Now I have the Meta (Oculus) Quest 2, which makes me wonder why I was fooling around with lesser hardware all along (perhaps because the technology didn't exist yet?). I have to say, if somebody decides to get serious, do invest in the right equipment, because otherwise it's like a rank beginner trying to learn to play a cheap instrument; it is possible to learn, but the instrument is harder to play, and the tones are uninspiring, making the learning process a lot more work than it should be.

    Got into VR a couple of years ago.
    Started cold with PSVR, I'd never tried it, never even had a console before, not particularly interested in gaming.
    But I liked 3D movies and figured I would like VR.
    Like is not strong enough a word though, I loved it.
    I was completely obsessed with it for the first six months and still typically spend a couple of hours a day in VR if not 5-6 2 years later.
    I got an original Quest a bit over a year ago and started learning Unity a couple of months after that.
    Decided to take a break from Unity after Xmas as I kept being frustrated with the online lessons jumping from basic scripting to stuff I had no idea how to do.
    I have played around with a little scripting over the years out of curiosity but before VR I never found anything interesting enough to motivate me and it used to be so tedious.
    I wonder if you appreciate just how much better the script editors available now make coding?
    So I concentrated on 3D modelling for a while then finally got a VR capable PC a few months back after which I drowned myself in learning how to mod SkESVR, Fo4VR and modelling with the tools available for that. Haven't attempted the Creation engine software as I appear to need the pancake games to use it?
    Currently having problems with Steam, might be a bug from VRChat, Steam support haven't been helpful.

    Great video! I was wondering if you would also need a great pc to develop vr games etc for the oculus quest 2? Because you can play games on it without a pc, but i assume that if you want to develop vr games for the quest you would need a great pc with a good graphics card?

    • @JustinPBarnett
      @JustinPBarnett  3 года назад +4

      Obviously a better pc will help you develop faster, but there is a limit to that. As long as your pc can run Unity you should be fine. I'd just recommend sticking to low-poly games instead of life-like stuff with a lot of polygons, that's where you'll really start to see the slowdown.

    • @jonathanelst8382

      @@JustinPBarnett Thanks for the answer! I've been learning to develop games with Unity a couple of months and the prototypes/games with low poly assets are running pretty smooth. So if that's the case vr development normally won't be a problem.

    Great video. Lots of good information. I have only experienced vr in games and never did any programing. So clean slate when it comes to this stuff. Let me lay our what I want to do, on a steep budget. Create a simple space that is a sphere shape, that a therapist is outside of but can see the controls for rgb color brightness, flicker or not flicker & control of ischronuc sound and binaural beats plus ambient music for a person sitting inside the sphere who will witness this in a 360 experience. How doable is this? How advanced do I need to be to create something like this and do you think there is a no code program that I could build this?
