So You Wanna Make Games?? | Episode 10: Game Design

- Опубликовано: 20 июн 2024
- In this video, a few game designers talk about some fundamental game design concepts-from understanding “fun,” to setting clear goals, and creating opposition. They also explain how design decisions can impact the theme and tone of a game, even without any art at all, underscoring the importance of cohesive art and design. Hopefully after watching this video you'll start thinking about all the ways art functions to support design choices and vice versa. Maybe you'll even get inspired to try designing, yourself!

I wanted this series to continue forever.
What other game dev topics would you be interested in us covering?
@@riotgames Another video on Game programming would be great.
If you haven't, check out Extra Credits. The narrator is a game animator and the writer a game designer.
@@riotgames There is so much more in game development that you could teach us :) For example all the stuff connected with the technical side of projects, or producing the games - how do you manage projects, how do you maintain consisten vision among hundreds of developers, how do you make decisions - it's all so interesting :)
Thank you for this series, I loved it. I work at game dev but as a programmer, so all of this was interesting and new for me :)
@@riotgames Beta-testing! I was always curious how that process really work. I mean it's actually one of most important parts of the game developers and I'm pretty sure most people (me included) have a lot of misconceptions about this one. How the feedback procedure established, what skills are required to be a beta-tester, all that.
This series is godsend! Thanks Riot, and the people in the videos! You are amazing as always.
Glad you enjoyed it, Yigit!

After I've seen all the videos, I want to do it all......

I do most of it, such is the indie's life :D
I mean, you can try to make a game all on your own.
@Andrei Despinoiu With that schedule you´ll spend several years and you won´t even master just one area
This is actually super useful and entertaining, this guy (I believe its Ben Boas speaking), I like the comedic twist to keep the information from being stale, clearly they had a lot of fun just putting this all together and editing it all in the end, while being informative throughout the whole thing! Even for someone like myself who is strictly a programmer, and partly a project manager, a lot of this is useful even for my own work - because even tho I dont art, I still work WITH artists, which is fun
I agree, and just wonder why people have this urge to start or finish their claims with "actually" like somebody was opposing them and they want to correct previously stated fact. Nobody is :D so maybe you think people will "actually" take you more seriously?? In 90% cases REALLY not the case :D its like: "this is actually nice video" or did YOU thought its going to be bad or what? :D
"What is a game? A miserable little pile of fun!"
Also, I almost cried at the end of the video omg, those words just... I don't know how to describe it, but thank you. I'll do my best, being a Game Designer is my dream and I'll do everything to achieve it.
How's it going 2 years later
@@jzxmoweeyHe is probably dead. Or gave up but let's hope for the best.
@@richeskokoti1235 why dead 🤣 God damn
this series has taught me more than almost three semesters of studying game design thanks riot!
I binged watch this entire series at 3am and it was fun af. This is really freaking underrated i wish it got more views so we could've gotten more series like this.
Thank you Riot Games for this wonderful series! You just inspired me to make a video game by myself but I'm still saving up some enough money to buy a high-end PC so I can start to get and learn more ideas and techniques from games that I was not able to play without a high-end pc. I'm hoping that I could make a game in the near future so thank you again Riot!
We hope you can too, Kyle!

Incredibly well done series. I have seen thousand videos about game design, game animation, 3d art etc but this one taught me so much more in such a short times. Congratz boys !
Guys... I'm crying rn. What an amazing series! Wish I had this info earlier in my life to made better decisions BUT and not that older, and maybe a little bit wiser to understand all of this, so I'm going to dive in it. Thank you for this amazing videos, seriously, you guys didn't have to make this wonderful series BUT you did it. And that last message. I'm inspired. Great series; now, back to work!
Really glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching :)
can you guys host a game jam ?
it would be really nice
Riot does host a hackathon every year, which is both for their own employees and some lucky other people.
This series is GOLD!
Honestly, I've seen many videos about many aspects within the game's industry, while trying to dive into on my 30's, but I can say that this 10 series videos is very objective and fun to watch!
I believe there's still some ground to cover but anyway I want to thank everyone that made this possible, big time!
Thank you so much for making this video. I am teaching video game design for the first time at my high school and I think this really does a great job of introducing a lot of the topics I want to convey to them and it is great seeing and hearing from the fantastic people who actually work on the games that we all love.
Thank you so much Riot! it was a great journey to binge the whole series and stealing insights! Wishing there will be great quality content to follow up this series or even focusing on other things to consider like the narration part of the game or even the world-building part. You got a fan that not only enjoy your game but also your content! Here's to the long journey ahead! Cheers!
I am loving these videos. I remember filling in a Form or something from riot asking about the game and at the end, i left a comment about how i would love more videos on design and their concept art. Thanks for the vods!
Thank you for your time and effort in sharing these videos with us -- I love it moreso because in some ways, I felt you applied a lot of your game dev expertise in crafting these videos to be more fun to watch and learn
wow!! this series was a miracle for me. I just got into the game designx field, and until now i never actually understood who does what. God bless you guys at Riot Game. Hoping for more vids.
This series was amazing. I would love a more in-depth series! Didn’t want it to end.
I've just finished watching the series and honestly I want to watch everything from the beginning again! I was so fun and full of quality information!
What a series. really enjoyed the explanation from all the experts... and what I really love is the last part of each video
"i dont know what kind of game ill be playing in 10 years, but it'd be pretty cool if it was a game you made" made me cry a lil bro damn ToT
Congrats on shipping these amazing vids! You guys did such an a great job. You should be proud of this invaluable contribution. GGWP!
Hello
Thank you so much for this series!
thanks a lot
this series was absolutely legendary.
hope you do one for devs and other for game designers.
What an amazing series. I just binged watched the whole thing and never wanted it to end!
thank you for making yet another amazing video on this subject :)
and for literally opening up to the public , and showing us a bit of what's going on in it !
One of the best series on the entire RUclips , thank you so much !
The advice section at the end was universal, not only for game designers. It's interesting that these people (who, in the game creation process, have to ask the almost philosphical question "What is _fun_?") gave this kind of advice. Love it, loved this whole series!
Edit: I take that back, going back *everybody's* personal advice was universal. Dang, these videos were good.
This was absolutely awesome to watch and it taught me a lot about the industry. As an art student at university who aspires to be a Riot employee this series was such a good watch I wish it could go on forever :,)
Thanks for this series Riot Team, I've been having a bad time starting the game design career, It's scarry and challenging. Those videos helped me a lot, thanks for all this content and motivation!
Thank you so much for this awesome series. It's really great to get some insight to the different processes of game art.

Thanks for creating this series! I really appreciate it
I don't tend to comment but this is a true masterpiece that I cannot ignore.
Like every content creator whoever made this will read the comments to see what people thought about their creation and this is my chance to say thank you. You created a series that opened my mind and inspired me.
Please consider creating an online course, I would pay without to blinking for more knowledge from you guys.
You are the best lesson I got on game industry free and paying - please make this the begging of something amazing and not just a side project :)

Thank's for sharing all this great information and experience! Loved the advice and stuff parts! Thanks again!
This series was really well made. Congrats, Riot.
What an amazing serie. Im realy thankful with you. I like so much the backstage of the things im involve
i recently gotten interested in concept and game illustration, i love games and never thought to combine my love for art and games, mainly because of my confidence on my skills, but I been taking art more seriously now and learn the basics even tho I draw all my life and as I grew older self doubt cripples my confidence,I use to create so many character and world build in my own mind, I just have to get back to that, I would love to work for riot one day,but I am aiming to learn the basics and practice my skills, then apply for smaller companies and build my experience and things like that, baby step, thanks riot for making this videos,it helps a lot for people like me,I actually took out my notes and wrote everything down in one night to memorize and remember this.
This was such amazing series. learned so much, had so much fun watching it. Thanks again.
Thank you all for there videos! Help me a lot
Thanks for making this video series, hope you guys keep making more content of the like.
What an incredible series, I watched every video even though I have no intention at all in working in the gaming industry! So well made and very infomative. Good job!
I guess that was the goal
Thanks! used these videos on my 3D-modelling course as extra material :)
Why is this series not getting a million-billion views????!!!!!!❤️ This is so good😍
Please make as much of these videos as there are champions in the game.
Just make this a whole freaking course. It's so amazing to watch, i don't want it to end.

I was just digging game dev and this just helped alot as a beginner researching
Sometimes I wonder if I chosen the right career, but then I watch a series like this and start boiling with excitement. That's when I know I can't be doing anything else if I want to be happy in life.
Thank you so much for this, Riot! You can count on me for EVERYTHING
I love those videos so much. Sometimes you hear people talk about internships but isn't it like REALLY REALLY hard to get into an internship that is art related in a game studio? Also I would really really love to see an episode about illustration that would be so cool!
Anyways thanks for making this video series Riot
These videos helped a lot ! Continue making more of these XD

So much pure liquid knowledge was just dropped onto me. I love it!

Nice one Rito! I wish I could help you become more than just the "League of Legend devs"! Imagine if Rito made a horror game... (Well, playing ADC in League is kinda horrifying already)
Good series. I am a solo developer developing my own game and doing everything myself (except building game engine). It just feels like doing gardening in your backyard and one day your friend just say “wow, you have your own game?!”
Really loved this series.
Real real helpful. Thanks for that.

still waiting on marketing...
Look for Extra Credits on YT. They have a lot of in depth videos on the subject.

I'm ganna watch these things on repeat while I practice. stupid inspiring! IM CHARGED!
I gonna be studying game design in college and this got me so hyped to learn more!
Be sure to learn as much as you can about other disciplines while you're there! Take advantage of the expertise around you and the fact you're paying them to learn!!! Many studios or teams are small enough they don't functionally have full time designers, so it's critical to pick up some extra skills so you're as useful and marketable as possible - being purely a designer makes it difficult to break into the industry as there are so many candidates applying and you can fall quite dependent on engineers and artists to implement your content.
