    Great stuff bro-I can’t believe I missed this video prior! I’ve got a question/potential future topics for you centered around emergency preparedness with respect to our comics. A few weeks back, I watched a thought proving video by Regie Collects. In it, he talked about having a bug out collection. By that he meant, having a subset of his collection-big dollar, most sentimental, etc., of comics ready to go in the event that he had to depart in a hurry because of some emergency. This could be due to say a fire getting too close to the area or a really bad storm on the horizon that could prompt an evacuation. I really like that idea and I’m thinking about how to incorporate that into my own emergency preparedness! Now, I would not put my life in jeopardy trying to run around grab insignificant stuff. However, if I had to evacuate and had just a short time before I had to go, I would want to take some of my prized comics with me along with other valuables and important documents. Like you, I too live in California (San Diego county) and I came close to having to evacuate a few years ago due to a big fire in the area. This was before I started collecting comics, so this was a non issue. However, I’m curious to know your thoughts around this and if you have such a system in place in the event that you had to bug out in a hurry! I know that we can get insurance to cover the monetary value, but even in my young collection-some of them are irreplaceable! Thanks as always for your great advice and content!

    Great info! Only thing that I find overkill is the dehumidifier. I’ve had books in boxes that have been almost touching an electric heater during winter (and I live in Montréal, Québec) and in a closet during searing hot and humid summer. I’ve bring them in every apartments I’ve lived in since leaving the parental house and none of them had issues. I’ve been living in basement condos since 2014 and still, no issues. And some books have been in with me since Byrne was drawing the Fantastic Four! :D I sent one for slab, it came back a 9.8. Some were in bags for 20 years, we’re talking pre-mylar, thick, softies that turns yellow and smells funky. You know what I’m talking about, right? Ahah :D So tell me, did you ever had issues with humidity, or is it for prevention? Peace!

    • @JernosComicsPopCulture
      @JernosComicsPopCulture  3 года назад +1

      Very interesting concerning humidity, because yes, before I purchased my dehumidifier, I could 100% see what the humidity was doing to my books. I would bring near mint books into my room, in bags and boards, and after a couple of weeks they would have waves in them. I live in an area where it's either really cold or extremely hot. There is no in between. Our summers usually last from May to October, where 100 degree weather can hit consistently in all of those months, and then BOOM, it's damn near freezing.
      So yeah, for me, the dehumidifier is absolutely needed. I haven't seen any waves since using one.

    • @AmedeeBoulette
      @AmedeeBoulette 3 года назад

      @@JernosComicsPopCulture wow, this is nuts! Where do you live? We have both brutal winters and summers. I’ve also seen people doing things with their lenses (I also have a small amount of old, manual lenses from the 60’s to the 80’s), to protect them from fungus in humid places, and it’s way more crazy..... I mean, lenses in ziploc, then in a box filled with gel bags (the absorbing ones).... but yeah, I’ve been lucky I guess. The only waves I’ve seen is with new moderns lol. I’ve had books not protected though, a couple, and they’ve become thick and yellow... I’m just disgusted when I buy some on eBay and they’re like that! Sometimes, you can’t tell from the photos, and then I’m pissed ;)

    Great Tips! As a newer person to comic collecting this really helps. Also, have you considered buying a used steel lateral filing cabinet on Craigslist. I bought one for $60 dollars and based off the dimensions of 36 inches wide and having five drawers high, It can hold 16 short boxes. The top shelf I use to store my comic supplies. It works great and the filing cabinet is built like a tank. Just figured I’d pass that information along for fellow comic lovers!

    I sometimes use the thick cardboard from books sent in the mail. Sometimes they are a bit bigger, but you can angle them or cut it down. I have put in actual books, or big thick magaizines or previews. On a budget you need to get creative. I have thought about Styrofoam, but I can stand the sound it makes personly. I try not to stack books, at least comics. Also its very bad to stack vinyl records that way since they can warp. I use those cheap damp rids, because without getting into it im in a basment that has many issues, pun intended

    • @JernosComicsPopCulture
      @JernosComicsPopCulture  3 года назад

      You absolutely have to get creative! lol. I try not to stack either, but because i'm always behind, there are usually a few sitting around stacked. When they are stack, I make sure they are half one way and half the other in order to prevent spine stress.

    I have full back boards. Even though there is buffer throughout the board, it seems like one side is still a bit smoother than the other (both sides still smooth). Which side should be touching the comic for full back boards ?

    • @JernosComicsPopCulture
      @JernosComicsPopCulture  3 года назад +1

      Great question! If they are full backs, you should be fine putting the comic against either side. If one feels a bit smoother, then it would just be preference for you. I know aesthetics are important to some, so for me, I'd probably still lay them against the smoother side.

    • @JernosComicsPopCulture

    My man with another great video filled with info and amazing tips and trick. I personally love my bcw plastic short box. I am very anal to the point where people say I have OCD but the reason why I love these boxes are there easy to move they come with dividers if the box is not full they broke down into about quarters and I have a small child, two dogs and a cat and it is a very huge peace of mind knowing that nothing can get it. I know they are expressive but at most I’m buying two a year so I can swing that. I also have a question, I’ve heard when storing for long term it is a good idea to rotate the spine. Is this important if you expect to read them within a year to a couple or the fact they’re in a box means the spin should be good

    • @JernosComicsPopCulture
      @JernosComicsPopCulture  4 года назад

      Wow! I actually didn't know about all of those specifics about the plastic boxes! You know, I might just have to buy one myself JUST to do a live comparison! I totally get your points! I have cats, and they have actually ripped into a couple of my son's boxes that he keeps in his room, so you really hit the nail on the head!
      As for the spine, I would never tell someone not to be extra careful, rotating the spines, or keeping one book forward, one book facing back in their boxes. But I don't. I have had books for over 30 years in a standard box, all front faces, that haven't had any damage done to the spine. I think the main thing is to not over stuff your boxes, then the heavy left side will absolutely case spine stress. So, if you have books all faced forward, and you plan on reading them within a couple years, I wouldn't stress too much about it. BUT, you always want to do what makes YOU feel most comfortable with your collection.

    Great video! On the subject of plastic tubs...Wish I'd have thought of that. Lost 99% of my 10K book collection to fire in 2011. None of it was fire damage though. I had my books in cardboard short boxes in a big walk-in closet. They got absolutely drenched with water. Even digging through to the bottom boxes (which sucked) thinking those might be good...Nope. They were soaked. I've rebuilt my collection to about 2-3K books and was just wishing someone made a plastic comic box (squared corners) with a sealed lid with a rubber gasket and the pop down clasps to hold it down. If I had something like that, I'd be a lot less depressedt every time I see a book I had on Instagram and YT.
