The worst barbariams were the Europeans and their Crusades, first they decided to set up independent states instead of giving their conquests to the basileos, so they ended up isolated and lost it again. Then they outright sacked and destroyed Konstantinopolis.
Although, the infighting was also a big part of their downfall. The byzantines were the first to give the turks a crossing into the Adrianopole, one faction wanted the the Ottomans to help them destroy the other faction, Ottomans just took over Greece and then it was over.

Get the faction you don't like so much, give them some 25% of that in a gift, wait until the interest goes back up to near the peak of 2.5b, then gift about 85% of that to them. It's hilarious, because the AI you gifted the gold to is the one that ends up with no money, no interest mechanics, and no matter how much money cheats the AI gets - no realistic way of getting out of that hole :)
Yeah, breaking a nation completely is about as simple as that in the game.

I would imagine that the reason the Huns were so willing to peace out, is because in real life the eastern Roman Empire, through a combination of strong armies and massive amounts of money, were able to deflect most of the hordes into the western Roman Empire. And the only way to really achieve that in game is by peacing out.

Would love to see you play the Equestria at War mod for HoI4. You might be interested for the following reasons:
    1) This total conversation mod is very well made with a all new map, with all new trees, with new weapons, all spread across two continents. For both fandoms, the most amazing thing is how such an unexpected crossover of a children's cartoon and WWII RTS just clicks together.
    2) There are some interesting factions that can include the unexpected. The Crystal Empire starts with a Choose your own adventure segment that will determine the type of government it will be. Meanwhile, The Dread League is a mageocracy of necromancers that plays more like a Strategy RPG and has endless ranks of the undead that are armed with weapons out of the dark ages... Against nations that could develop nuclear bombs...
    3) When played by a human player, Princess Celestia can be turned into a tea powered god empress of the sun. You can have her leading the front lines after her mental breakdown into fascism. She's very overpowered, giving huge bonuses for about 100 days until she presumably runs out of tea.
