I decided to make my own modeling paste for crafting. It is easy and inexpensive to make and works beautifully. I purchase supplies wherever I can get them the least expensive, as I make and use modeling paste a lot.
NOTE: Do use a face mask, to avoid inhaling powder, while mixing the paste, and while sanding it, if smoothing the dried paste is necessary. Drying times depend on how thick you apply it and the temperature of the room. 48 hours for sure, if it's a thin layer (like smearing it using a regular thin stencil)... If it's used thicker than that, for sure after 1 week it will be fully dried. This particular paste is meant for crafting & decorative purposes (to resurface and/or create texture and can even be used like adhesive/grouting for air-dry clay tiles). I have not tried it in moulds to create a solid individual object. I've used it with regular stencils, and it worked well.
RECIPE:
1/2 cup 120 Grams Baby Powder
1/3 cup/80 ml Crafting Glue
3 Tablespoons/44 Grams White Acrylic Paint
DIRECTIONS: Mix ingredients together well, and store in an airtight (preferably glass) container. It is best to use each batch as soon as possible, as the mix will lose moisture over time.

Cant wait to try this 😊
Thank You. This is what I need now🤩🤩🤩
Fantastic just what I was looking for. Saved me a lot of money. Thanks so much.
Happy to hear it! ☺️❣️
Do you need the acrylic paint and can I use other colors?
@@GmGibby Yes the paint is an important component of the recipe, and yes you can use different color acrylic paints.

Aww.. Thank you so much Rita 🙏 I appreciate that more than you know ❣️
3 questions:
1. Is it absolutely necessary that this DIY modeling paste is used immediately after it is made, or can it stored then used some time later (such as maybe a week later)?
2. If an interested in trying sculpture painting involving different colors, would you recommend:
(a) making a batch of white model paste, scooping up the needed amount and blending it with the desired color of acrylic paint, or
(b) making smaller batches of the DIY modeling paste, but substituting the desired colors instead of the white acrylic paint used in the video?
3. Any recommendation on how to make the texture of the DIY modeling paste as smooth as possible (and not grainy)?
Great questions! 😉
1. You can make it and store it in an airtight container. A glass jar would work best. But try to use it as soon as possible because it becomes less moist/thicker with time.
2. I think option "b" would work fine because adding additional colored acrylic paint will change the texture, if even slightly. Although ...you may just want to try one small batch of option "a", because it may just be a better texture for your sculpting needs.
3. The texture of mine was not grainy. Mix it well and keep it covered in between scooping. But again.. try a small batch of option "a" and see if the adding the additional acrylic paint for coloring will smooth it out more to your liking.
Happy Sculpting! 😀

Hello, thanks for your post. Do you know if it cracks when it dries? I mean is this paste flexible?
It is not flexible when dry. The thinner the dried edges or peaks the more brittle it seems to be. The flatter or smoother you apply it, the better. I've also used it as grout/adhesive for my DIY Air Dry Clay Tile projects and the parts exposed are fine. I would say it's meant to be applied, dried and can even be painted/varnished. But the idea is that it is for decorative purposes and not to be bothered once you are done with the project. Try a batch and see how it works for your project. Let me know how it turns out. I used quite a lot of it to create a smooth surface in my DIY Decorative Pumpkins ruclips.net/video/WEj8u0zfOgY/видео.html

Wish I saw this video yesterday, that looks perfect and easy. I just wasted a lot of time using modge podge and plaster, took a lot of work to make it plyable

Great! If possible, store it in a glass jar!
@@MocasWorld I have mason jar 💖
thank you for the video, i just have 1 question
how much time does it take to dry with and without hairdryer?
thank you❤
Hi...Of course, it depends on the surface it is applied to and the amount of paste applied. I would say try at least 24 hours without blow dryer and approx. 5 minutes with blow-dryer on cool or warm setting. Hope that helps.
thank you so much mam it was so helpful to me
I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for the positive feedback 🙏
Is it long lasting if I use it on a canvas board or MDF board? I hope it won't take off after some time
Should be long lasting as long as the canvas or board is not mishandled after you apply it... or exposed to weather elements... In other words protect it like you would any nice artwork/craftwork.
Thank you ☺️
Thank you for the positive feedback 🙏
@@MocasWorld I want try this paste in texture it's working good ?
@@traditionspoterie2266 Yes!... I make it often. It is very versatile.. I use it to create a smooth surface, to create texture, to fill cracks, and even as grout/adhesive for when I make clay tiles (like in this video for example ruclips.net/video/ZFj9753ZtB4/видео.html)
Thanks so much for this! One question how does this handle paint once dry? Could you paint watercolour over it the way you could paint on plaster? Is this similar to plaster of paris? thank you!
I haven't tried painting watercolor on it.. I've only used acrylic paint. But... after the paste is fully dried, I do apply a thin layer of plain crafting glue (the same type that was used in the paste mixture) as a layer of protection , then let it dry fully before painting. Let me know if you try that and how it works with the watercolor paint.
Thanks for the reply will do!@@MocasWorld
Thanks a ton for the video. Can I use plaster instead of baby powder?
I've never tried it with plaster of paris, but for my recipe, you could also substitute cornstarch. The only way to know for sure if/how the plaster will work, is to try it... Maybe make just a small batch just to test it. If you do, let me know if it works for your project. Best of luck!
Thank you for this. What's the curing time for this particular mixture? Please do share!
It depends how thick you apply it. 48 hours for sure, if it's a thin layer (like smearing it using a regular thin stencil)... Thicker than that.. for sure after 1 week it will be fully dried. Of course, it's more meant for decorative purpose rather than everyday use, as the exposed surface may become brittle over time.
@@MocasWorld Oh, alright. I understand... but it'll brittle over time? I was planning to stick to this recipe for good, to continue making textured art. Is it not recommended for making such pieces, especially if you're gifting it to someone? And thank you for the quick response! Was so helpful.
@@tehreemghazanfar6822 I think it should be fine as a decorative piece.. in other words tell the person(s) you are gifting it to that it's extra special and to handle with care.. "put it on a shelf and let it look pretty and don't touch it" LOL
@@MocasWorld Haha, alright, thanks a bunch for the guidance! 💜
Hey! Idk if you still respond to these but, I’d like to use this to fill and smooth out hole/gaps in a large 3d print sculpture I made. Would this be good for that?
Hi.. sounds like it would work for your project, just allow it dry completely after application and be gentle if smoothing it out after drying. Of course the only way to know for sure is to try it. If you do let me know how it turns out, in case someone else has your same question. If you'd like, check out this project I used it on, to see how I resurfaced, sanded it and filled gaps in the dried clay embellishments. So glad you found the video helpful!
How long does this keep once prepared obviously in some airtight container? THKS!
I only make small batches and use it up within a week 2 at most, so it's hard to say how long it will last. It dries a little over time, even in an airtight container (because you have to open the container during use) so I recommend making it in small batches, storing in a glass jar and using as soon as possible, for best results.
Thanks for information
I was asking the different use of texture paste and modeling paste? Thanks
I use it for crafting only... to create a smooth surface, or create a textured surface, it can also be used like grout/filler or adhesive for air-dry clay tiles, I also use it with stencils to create 3D (raised) patterns. You can check out my DIY Decorative Pumpkins and Tiled Frame Decoupage full length (not the shorts) videos in my Crafts playlist as examples. ruclips.net/p/PL4Jw2ofjp-ilOuMcjd3ninBgIV-wzkNFD

@@MocasWorld thankyou
I know this video is older so im wondering if youve tried it in a silicone mould yet? Ty!
No.. I've only used it with stencils and use it resurface or smooth out uneven surfaces, fill gaps, and like grout/adhesive for DIY clay tiles.
How long does it last if you do a sculpture ln cancas ..will it brreak ?
The paste is quite durable, as long as you handle your finished project carefully (like a special piece of art), it should last a long time. From my experience, the paste works well on canvas. The only way to know for sure is to just try it. Let me know how it goes if you do try it. ❣️
Can I use pop instead of Talcum/baby powder?
By "pop" do you mean Plaster of Paris? I don't know what that consistency would be, or if it would get too dry or harden. If you try it, let me know the outcome please. You can try using cornstarch instead of talcum... add small amounts until you get the right thickness.
The baby powder they sell now has corn starch instead of talc. Will that work? I know baking soda is supposed to work too
Yes it should work, but the consistency may be just a tiny bit different.
Did it work?
Could I Use A Brown Acrylic Paint to get a Darker Paste.
I think that should be fine.
Can i use this to make watercolor ground??
The paste is meant to be completely dried after use.. I've never personally done it the way you are suggesting, but you could certainly add some color(s) to it while it is still naturally wet, then allow it to dry completely.
Can we use these paste for lippan art by pouring these in cones ?
I had to actually Google Lippan Art, because I am not familiar with it. I have used the modeling paste as grout/adhesive for DIY Air Dry Clay Tiles that I made to use for a project, so maybe it would work. Have a look at this video if you'd like... The part where I grout the tiles to the frame (@ about 11 mins into the video) ruclips.net/video/ZFj9753ZtB4/видео.htmlsi=ySoRcZbSz375Cw8Q But ultimately, I suggest you make a batch of the modeling paste and try it. If you do try it, please let me know how it turned out.
Really grateful for the useful information! I’ve made one but it’s not as thick as shown in the video. tried pouring more powder in but didn’t work. How can I make it as thick as yours? Thank you!❤
Not sure why yours is not as thick, if you're using the same ingredients and measurements. Allow it to rest overnight maybe. The mixture tends to dry out as time passes by. Let me know if that helps.
@@MocasWorld Thank you for your reply! I poured more powder and today it dried out 😂! I’ll try again later and wait overnight this time to see the result.

I was going to buy some golden fiber paste but it’s the best part of 50 euros a pot 😢I am playing with textures to create a sand effect on a canvas. Was thinking to add a little real sand to this?
I suggest doing a small batch of modeling paste, then separate it into maybe 3 parts and do a test adding different amounts of sand, to see which give you the best texture. Please let me know how it works out.
Hi there - when it's dry can it be carved with a craft knife and or sanded?
I've not tried carving into it but I suggest doing a few layers of the paste, drying in between each layer so that you have a sturdy foundation to work with...and yes it can be sanded. Just have a mask handy and cover your work area for the dust, use very fine sand paper and be gentle. Actually if you have a lot of smooth dust residue (no chunks) you could reuse it in your next batch of paste. Let me know how your project works out.
thank you so much! @@MocasWorld
The acrylic paint It is necesary for the paste?
Used mainly for color and helps with texture, but you could to make it without the acrylic and see if it works for your needs. Let me know how it goes, if you try it without.
can you put this in a very shallow silicone lace mold?
I've never tried it personally but if it's shallow, I think it may work. Just handle with care as it will likely be delicate. Please let me know if you try it.
Can clear glue be used and then add different colors of acrylic paint?
I have not tried it with clear glue. The white glue may give it a different texture/finish than the clear glue, but you could try it. You can also use colored acrylic paint instead of the white acrylic paint. Let me know how it turns out.
I will try this method. One question i have about this is this: Does the fragrance of baby powder stay in the finished product once everything is mixed? I will still try this method very soon!
I didn't notice the smell after I mixed it. It depends on how strong the baby powder scent is in the first place. But after application of the paste then it drying and any further crafting, like painting it, any BP scent would likely be
faint at most.
Can we use this paste for 3d floral acrylic art......replacement for heavy textured paste?
And can we use this paste for modelling art like loading a pallette knife to make petals?...will be very happy if you respond to my requested questions....
Great questions❣️... The paste works well to create a 3D effect, but I have only ever used it on top of other surfaces. The only way to know for certain if it works for your needs is to make a small batch and test it. It should work well with a palette knife as you asked. Liquid acrylic is necessary San we use acrylic that are in tubes
The ones in tubes are liquid also, but if you are going to make large amounts or often, larger containers of the white acrylic paint are usually more cost effective.

How fast does this dry? Thanks for sharing.
Hi.. it really depends on how thick it is applied and where. Externally 1 application about 24 hours or a lot less if you use a blow-dryer. But I do think it's best air dry naturally if time allows. I also used it as grout/adhesive for my clay tile project and I let it sit for approx. 5 days, just to make sure it was naturally dry. Here's that video if you'd like to see how thick that application was. ruclips.net/video/ZFj9753ZtB4/видео.htmlsi=V2FJ-lGGSuB8rpAU
I want to use paste for my art class but needs to dry within a half hour to complete a two hour project. I read that plaster of Paris dries fast? I’m new to pastes. Thank you
@@RainDropps Don't know about plaster of paris. But this paste should dry fast if you use a blow-dryer... But I would test different thinknesses (a thin layer vs thicker layer) and see how long it takes if you blow-dry it. Good luck. Let me know how the project goes.
a question, can i use this paste to also make flowers?
If you are applying it to a surface, as 3D flowers, that should be fine. Best to make a small batch (store in an airtight glass jar if you have one) then try it for your project. Pls let me know how it turns out, if you try it.
Can this be used on plastic bottle? It with adhere to plastic?
It should as long as the bottle is free of grease... if you notice in the video I did it on the plastic cap. I've used it on various other surfaces as well. The key is to let it dry thoroughly. And I use it for crafting, so once the project is done I don't handle it much.
hey. does it crack if you use it in thick layers? like 7 to 10 cm? thank you
HI...I only use it for "thin" layers... mainly to smooth out surfaces... fill cracks... and create 3D/raised look. And even then, depending on the project, there may be hairline cracks once dry. But I just use a bit more paste to fill the cracks, then allow that to dry. I suggest if you are wanting such thick layers #1 Create a batch of the paste to test it #2 Apply in thin layers, drying thoroughly in between, until you get to the desired thickness. If you do try it please let me know the outcome.
thank you so much @@MocasWorld
Can we put this paste on canvas for wall art . Does it Crack
Yes it works on canvas. IF there are any hairline cracks when it dries, you can easily/gently fill them with more paste, then dry thoroughly before applying anything else. Just try not to manipulate it too much. Let me know how your project goes. 😄
Does Elmer’s glue work instead of craft glue?
I used "crafting" glue, but to me it's more or less like Elmer's glue. I think generic crafting glue is sold in larger quantities and generally less expensive than Elmer's, but price may depend on where you purchase it.
@@MocasWorld thanks so much can’t wait to try this out 💜
Is there any chance of getting crack on painting if we use this type of homemade texture paste.
The only way to know for sure is to try it. It's durable for crafting. But there are things that can affect the the final outcome/appearance of dried texture paste.. for example, the type of paint used, the type of brush/applicator used, the amount of pressure and technique used while painting. I personally use the paste for decorative crafting only and once it is painted and dried, I try not touch or manipulate the object too much.
I used it in a large canva and it cracked a lot. Is there any suggestion to avoid that?
@@milotorres4684 you mean on canvas? After it is completely dried, you could use a small paintbrush with the paste to GENTLY fill the cracks. Then allow that to dry thoroughly. That may be tedious if there are really a lot of cracks but I think thats the best solution. I have not personally used it extensively on canvas. You could also try putting a little extra acrylic paint when mixing a new batches paste, and try it. Depending on how thick you're applying it, it may be better to do 2 thin layers drying thoroughly in between. Trial and error. Let me know how it goes if you are able to solve the issue, in case someone else has the same problem. Best of luck 🍀
is this flexible at all when it dries?
From my experience, no, it's not flexible when it dries. And it's best not to handle it too much after the project is completed. The paste will however adhere to just about any surface, even curved ones.
se poate folosi si amidon?
Da... dar recomand să faceți un lot mic de pastă și să o păstrați într-un borcan de sticlă ermetic, dacă aveți unul. Pasta tinde să se usuce puțin în timp.
Can i use and then paint with acrylics
Hi yes... After it has dried thoroughly, you can paint with acrylics. I did a new follow up video with tips for best results, and showing examples of the different ways I use and finish the paste for different projects. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/umJ7aL6Yo-o/видео.htmlsi=5kowZ01QWR_ubwFW
Is adding water a no-no, cause I added some to my baby powder mix because it was to thick and chalky and it became like starch with water, you know, when ya hit it, it's hard like rock but when stirred gently it's very runny. Why did this happen when I didn't use starch, but used baby powder which is talcum I thought???
Correct.. adding water is a no-no because it changes the chemical make-up and effectiveness of the paste. Most baby powders are made with some cornstarch. Whatever consistency you get after using the recipe exactly as it is, should work. But if you are doubting it, I suggest testing a very small amount of the paste on your project and allow it to dry completely. If it's too brittle or not to your liking, then add more glue AND acrylic paint in equal amounts. Start with 1 teaspoon of each. Then test it again. Please use a mask so as not to inhale the dust from the powder, when mixing and if you sandpaper the project.
@MocasWorld OH thank you so much, I will be trying it again following your steps and will hope that works better 😊 Question: Do I pull the stencil off while the paste is still wet or world it be better to let it sit for a minute or two? I thought that pulling it off right away, was the cause of it spreading out and not holding its shape. Thank you fellow crafter.
@@jean-63 The paste shouldn't be runny. If it is runny after mixing it, allow it to thicken for an hour or so. (I'd say the consistency is little bit thicker/drier than toothpaste). Store it in a tightly covered glass jar if you have one, because it naturally dries out over time. Since it shouldn't be runny like I said, you should be able to apply it using a stencil then carefully remove the stencil right away. The object you're stenciling should lay flat and let it remain in that position till the paste dries. (Don't fight gravity you know 😉)
Thank you @@MocasWorld for all your help, I appreciate your kindness 😊 🙏 ☺️
@@jean-63 My pleasure ❣️
Does this crack when dry?
Minor hairline cracks may form, depending on the surface it's used on and the amount used. Once dried properly, you can fill any cracks with additional modeling paste, then allow that to dry thoroughly.
Would this mixture hold it's shape if I wanted to use it to pipe flowers?
Depends on how thick the petals would be... and if you are laying/building it on a flat surface or stand-alone. Probably best to just make a small batch (maybe 1/4 of the recipe) and try it. Let me know if you do it and if it works or not. If it doesn't, I've used air-dry clay to make thick 3D flowers. But mine are all attached to a flat surface.
Is this the same as embossing paste?
I've not heard it called that, but I would say yes, as I use it for texture and 3D relief. (Here's my latest video on the paste, including texture and 3D relief projects which I used it for). ruclips.net/video/umJ7aL6Yo-o/видео.htmlsi=eWDzfFwQy4w8G7L1
Can i make a silicone mold?
Hi. . this modeling paste is not pliable and sort of delicate when dry I use it mainly for resurfacing craft objects and even as adhesive/grout for my clay tile projects. Here's my video on how to make durable silicone molds (at least one way) in my video my silicone mixture is good for larger/more dense objects. (There are other videos out there using it much thinner for tiny/small objects) Here's my link and there is a part 2 (the reveal) as well ruclips.net/video/jC63ecbcCIc/видео.html
Could I use cornstarch instead of baby powder,
Hi.... Yes cornstarch would work, and recommend storing the paste in a glass jar if you have one.
@@MocasWorld thank you so much
can we use corn flour instead of baby powder?
Corn flour is likely more absorbent than baby powder or cornstarch, and you would have to use the really finely grounded one, to have a similar texture. The only way to know for sure if it will work, is to try to make a small batch to test it. If you do, pls let me know how it turns out.
Hello
Can we use oil paint instead of acrylic paint?
I have not personally tried using oil paint. Acrylic paint is less expensive and more readily available. Let me know how it turns out of you try it.
Nooo!!! you absolutely CAN'T do that because the white glue is water based, you can't mix oil and water!!!
is modeling paste sandable?
Hi... great question. Just want to mention that I use it for mainly for crafting/art projects. That being said, I have only ever had to sand it GENTLY on a project or two, using VERY FINE sand paper. It creates a bit of dust, as the ingredients are lightweight to begin with. I suggest making a small batch of modeling paste and testing it out for your needs. Let me know if it works for you. 🤞
Can i use it on the wall?
I've never tried that, but you could try a small area on an interior wall first. Don't think it would work so well exposed to the elements outside. Maybe start with thin layer and let it dry thoroughly (a few days depending on temperature in the area). If you try it, let me know how it turns out. Best of luck!

Yes.... I've also used it as grout/adhesive from my DIY clay tiles and I've used it to smooth out certain surfaces. I included the links to a few of the project I used i on in the description section of this video. I use it fir crafting purposes only.
Is it waterproof?
Hi.. I only use it for decorative crafting and once I use it for a project, I try not to manipulate it in any way. You can paint it, after you apply it to a surface, but I think even with paint and glue as 2 of the ingredients, it would deteriorate with water after it has dried. How quickly, only time would tell. Let me know if you do try it and the outcome, in case someone else wants to know.
Is this archival?
I can't attest to it being archival, simply because I've only been using it for a short amount of time. However, so far the decorative projects that I've used it on, are still very much in tact... Keyword being "decorative" ... Meaning the items are not for everyday use, but untouched, hanging on a wall or sitting on a shelf. Hope that helps.
Can you use this for masks
That's a great question!... I think it may work... but it may need a few layers built up for it to be sturdy .. maybe dry each layer first before applying the next layer.. Please let me know how it turned out if you try it.

The Amazon (US) link for the baby powder is no longer active. Does the baby powder need to have talc? Most are talc-free these days. Thanks
Hi Patty! Thank you for letting me know about the link 🙏That item is likely no longer available, so I have updated the link to a talc-free version, because yes... most are now talc-free. Talc-free should work fine.
