This 5.5x15 1.5mm steel snare by Beier Drums is my first choice for a big, fat, '80s rock vibe. Tuned medium low, muffled with some tape, and with tight snare wires, this thing sounds like a drum machine sample. What I like about this snare is that it gets that super-fat deep tone without sounding too muddy and heavy. The snares remain crisp and articulate and the sustain remains contained. I've used this drum on more tracks in the past 2 years than any other in my collection. Folks just love that chesty, meaty thump!
