- Todays video isnt so much about specific lenses themselves more the focal length on any particular brand, Canon also have great 24mm and 35mm lenses so hopefully this may help you decide between the two.

Chris Turner Photographer I didn’t notice until you pointed it out 😂
I just now seen this! You had me looking through all the photographs taken, and I'm like: "WTH is this guy talking about?!" Haha!
@@techoasys pp
24 mm is more dramatic - 35mm a little more intimate, in my opinion. I am biased though as I have the 24 GM and it is amazing!
Chryseas S. I also agree and I have both. Something worth mentioning though is all these examples are of of just 2 subjects in the middle of the frame. When you start shooting with more peps in the frame you really have to watch that edge distortion with the 24mm that you don’t have with 35.
@@johnpujol6437 very true, or you'd have to stand back a bit further to avoid distortion
I just got the 24mm 1.4 and I'm worried about it being too wide for my general purpose lens... I'm so used to my Canon 35 (just too heavy to keep in the bag as a walk around lens). It's odd because when I used my 24-70, I shot at 24 A LOT! I'll have to test it more. I can't wait for night shots with the 24 though!
@@thirdmort You won't be disappointed with the 24 GM at night - fantastic detail which allows you to crop in during editing if the shot seems too wide for your taste. This lens has really spoiled me and is my new benchmark for what I want in my kit - good job Sony for getting my money, ha,ha!
I have a 25mm F2 Zeiss and 35m F1.4 by Sony/Zeiss but I find the 25mm to be more useful for my use and like you said, it is more dramatic and I prefer that, actually. Plus, I use a7RIII, so, cropping isn't an issue.
To me what a 35 does well a 50 does better. As for showing environment a 24 does that better. For work both 24 and 50 work better for me.
You and Julia Trotti (also on RUclips) are two of the few people who endorse wide focal lengths for portraits and I love that. 85 used to be my favorite focal length for portraiture but now I love the challenge of 24 and 35!
I’ve seen a of her videos she’s great
My wedding kit 24mm 1.4 Gm, 55mm 1.8 Sony and 135mm 1.8 Gm. Portrait kit: 35mm sigma 1.2, 135mm Gm, 85mm 1.4 Gm or 50mm 1.4 sigma.
35 with the 135 is my favorite combo
The 24mm tells more of a story as it provides more context by including more of the surrounding environment… whereas the 35mm gives off more of an intimate vibe due to the fact that it crops in on the subjects more.. the subjects are the focus. I personally have the 24mm and it is my favourite lens by a mile.
Exactly True!! I have sigma 24 and I'm absolutely in love with it 😍 I'm also using it more for my Portrait shots instead of my Sony fe 85 , it is more cinematic and the shots have more emotions! I was just tired with 85mm close up portraits and 24mm is definitely a whole new experience!!
Wouldn't both achieve the same ? If you use 24 and move closer it can get a similar look to 35 and if you use the 35 but step back further, assuming you can, you'd get a similar look? I'm curious if that has been tested. I'm not a pro so don't beat me up
Haha yeah you can step back and get the same frame but the background looks different. It is quite a different look. I’ve done videos comparing the two
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer well let me get myself in gear and go watch those ones lol that seems like it would be helpful for me. I'm going to be selling my a7iii (hate the color) and getting an R6 for hybrid video/photo and think i'm leaning toward purchasing a used 70-200 EF with adapter and then either a 24 or 35 1.4 or 1.8 and hope that would cover all of my needs!
I’d have a look at the A74 if you don’t like the colour of the A73, otherwise the R6 is reasonably good also, I’ve done reviews on them too.
Both make beautiful shots but this definitely reaffirmed my desire to switch from 35 to 24. Just fits my style better. And I typically shoot in tighter spaces where I need to be closer to my subject, and where background distortion isn’t an issue.
Some of these the 35 looked better but I could get the same shot looking even better on a 50. I like the the width and environmental look of the 35 but a 24 does that better. I like the bokeh and less distortion of the 35 but a 50 does that better, which is why after using 35 for quite a while as my do it all I’m going to 24 and 50 combo plus a 70-200 and I’m golden.
i think gonna follow you mate
Can not believe how useful this video was and this comparing. I have struggled a lot which one to choose 24mm or 35mm and seeing those photos Im pretty sure that I like 24mm way more + it suits better with my 50mm. Thanks bro!
With Sony a7R4, the 24mm 1.4 GM becomes a 2-in-1 lens. At crop mode equivalent of 35mm, it still gives a 26MP image! Best of both worlds!
why buy a full frame camera then use it on crop mode?
@@legend240891 cuz u can have room to crop ur images
And its like having 2 lenses
I don't know if he mentioned it in this video, but he mentions that before, I might just do that.
@@legend240891 because you can get two different looks from 1 lens. If you're trying to decide between 24 and 35 you can essential have both looks if you get the 24 because crop mode you'll get a ~36 field of view with 26mp. Plus crop mode makes it easier to compose your image how you want it instead of cropping in post.
@@legend240891 I just upgraded to full frame and as much as I have longed for the 35mm, the 24mm I am looking at is a bit cheaper and I figured I could use it on my crop to get the 35mm effect when I want it. It’s a smart play, honestly. 🤷🏾♀️
Both brilliant, 35 looks more about the couple but 24 has the whole scene. I always worried about shooting portraits at 24 as it may be mistaken for the average mobile phone focal length, have you ever been asked was it on a phone as phones are getting much better?
This is the best video I've found on the internet highlighting the differences between 24/35 FL.
I'd like to see Sony go for a 28mm 1.4 like the Nikon as that would be a pretty nice sweetspot for people like me that love both 24/35 for different reasons.
I think they both do their thing. 24mm for capturing the landscape as a priotity, 35mm for capturing people in a beautiful background. I want both but cant decide because I film talking headsbfor work, but feel the 24 is way better for nature shots..idk
Among the pictures shown, I chose 9 of the 35mm and 4 of the 24mm. I perferred the 35mm by far! I felt more emotionally connected to each portrait while still being shown enough of their surroundings to be told a story of their day on the beach. Fantastic video showcasing both of these focal lengths - if not one of the best I've found on RUclips because I have been struggling with this decision! Thank you kindly for your help! I will be purchasing a 35mm for my next lens! :)
Well i got the sigma 24-35 f2 and im very happy with it 👍
They're very close imo it depends on what your going for. If you want a lot of environment emphasis go 24 if you want a bit more on the people or subject go 35
Prefer 35mm look but I just can't give up my 24mm GM. It's just such an awesome lens!
I liked the 35 better, but both looked great.
I haven't tried the 24 but I just got a 35 and I've been loving it. Its not the native one but I like the way it renders
The 35mm is much more intimate when photographing people. The 24 is nicer for landscapes.
took the words right out of my mouth...I'm more of a candid portrait guy.
The 24mm is so sick! Pretty sure this video just helped me make my decision 👍🏽
I have the 24 1.4 GM, 55 1.8 and 135 1.8 GM, great combination of lenses for the Sony A7R III, would prefer to have 105 1.4 GM over 135 but don't have that option yet, the sigma 105 1.5 art is way too big and heavy.
I just purchased me the 24mm. I was having a difficult time deciding which focal length to go with mainly because I have the 24-70 lens but it’s a 2.8 and I really wanted something faster, sharper and better in low light so I got the 24 cause I like how it looks overall
I prefer the 24mm compositions. But....the 35.m shots were great too!
The 24mm can work as a close up and wide angle....the 35mm is mostly best for close up...I prefer the 24mm look....
If it’s about the place 24 but if it’s about the subject the 35. There is a lot more energy to a larger than life 24 mm shot but definitely the 35 is more intimate and zeroes in on the subject. It would be a tough pick but although I prefer the look of 24 I would get the 35 first if I could only have one unless I was a landscape/architecture photographer. Anything with a human, animal, or product as subject is going to be better served with the 35.
Most underrated photographer on RUclips(well from the ones I follow and they are a lot, I’m sure there is a lot more).
Absolutely stunning photos every freaking time. I don’t know how you manage to do videos, and take photos and all that. Amazing amazing amazing. I’ve been subscribed for such a long time and just checked and I can’t believe you are sitting at 15k subscribers, should be way way more. Anyway, don’t be discouraged ever and keep doing what you are doing. Pleasure to watch every time.
Thanks alot mate!
Thanks for a meaningful comparison. Personally, I "think" I prefer the 35mm. Optimally, I would like to have both. Be well.
Definitely the 24mm for me!
I was selling my 55 yesterday and then smacked myself and said what am I doing. I hardly use it for weddings, I mainly us the 28mm f.2.0 and its butter. I sold it (28mm) today and bought a 35 1.8 so Im pretty stoked to see the results.) love your work Chris. Legit.) 🙌🙌
I wish Sony would solve all my problems and make a 35mm 1.4 GM
they will I have no doubts about it, it just matter of time
@@joeblack4026 A 50/105 GM would be better but I think they are working on a ultra wide angle prime right now, probably 14/16/18/20 GM
EXACTLY
mohammed elony i don’t know if you’ve tried the 50mm 1.4 Zeiss but everyone I know who has that lens loves it, I think Sony May consider that to be up to the standard of their GM line up so they may not update it. It’s also one of the sharpest lens available for Sony cameras along with the sigma 35 1.2, 24mm gm, 135mm gm, and sigma 105 1.4.
@@tylerbrown9835 i heard sigma working on a 50 1.2 for the sony
So I was told by some of my viewers that you and I dropped the same kinda video at the same time...
nice...
Did we lol I’ll have to check yours out. Can’t hurt to have 2 opinions eh, looks like a beat you by a few hours haha. Great video dude
HAHA just came here after watching yours, Jason. I have the 24GM which I LOVE, but the 35 is more my style and trying to justify purchasing one
@@jaikavi5464 why? how does the extra 11mm make that much of a difference? Sincere questions
@@jaymills1720 it actually does. The wider the lens the more noticeable each mm is. 35mm is great for close and environmental portraiture. 24mm is good for enviro, a bit to wide for close ups. I ended up getting the 35mm GM, which is great, but I do miss the 24mm. It's a perfect lens
I thought I liked 35 best, but after seeing these images, I think 24 is best and you can even crop later.
If I was in beautiful New Zealand on those amazing beaches, I'd prefer the 24 as well! But, unfortunately, I generally need to have more control of what is in the frame so I generally stick with the 35mm 1.4 Zeiss
It’s a great lens!
I use the 24 and the 35.
When I use a 35mm f/1.4 as my main lens, I flank it with a 21mm f/1.4 and a 90mm f/2
When I use a 50mm f/1.4 as my main lens, I flank it with a 24mm f/2 and a 105mm f/2.5
Very good comparison! I like the 35 mm better, the 24 mm images are too busy.
Chris, (just subscribed) I prefer the 35mm shots. My dilemma, I've upgraded from Canon 80D to the Canon R, I am an NZ Adventure & Camping RUclipsr that requires one lens that's light, compact & stable to Vlog whilst walking, shooting b-roll, walk-throughs, campsite & camp cook-up scenes on a tripod, low light & photo performance is important. Do I get the RF 24 or 35 or use my EF adapter mount with another? My price point is under $1,000, so what do you or your followers think please, also do you know of a 2nd hand one for sale in New Zealand?
i like 24 better when i need it for special 24 mm. shot...the 35 i love more if i need a 35 mm. lens...🤣
I would say A7R III with a 24 1.4 GM, 55 1.8/50 1.4, 105 1.4/135 1.8 GM would be a great combo. Wide, medium, telephoto focal lengths. The APSC mode will allow 35, 85 and 200mm with these lenses, not exactly but close enough. You are almost getting the 24-200mm focal length cover at f1.8 or wider appertures.
... take the 24 GM and use it with the a7R IV - and with the a7R IV also in crop-modus. 😄 So you having both in one. 👍🏻
Thanks for this Chris! I just got the 24mm gm and will be using it as my main along side the 85mm gm.
I figured if I needed to crop in a little more with the 24mm, I can effectively use super 35 mode on my a7riii still giving it 18mp. Same with the 85gm.
i also have the a7riii and the 85gm and been wanting to get the 24mm but wondering how has it been for you? good choice?
Thanks a lot for this video. One question tho, as you are fellow Sony shooter, is the 16-35 GM good enough to replace the 24gm and 35gm? I shoot mainly landscapes, environmental portraits and a bit of street photography while traveling. I have an 85mm to shoot portraits. I prefer to have the prime lenses for their compactness and sharpness. But switching between lenses is troublesome and prime lenses sometimes doesn't offer the versatility a zoom lens would. Really stuck between choosing 24GM, 35 GM and 16-35 GM. I would really appreciate if you help me decide. Thanks in advance.
Some 24mm shots are just fire due to the drama of the distorted perspective, but overall I feel like you got more bangers with the intimate feel of the 35mm :)
In the end I think the photographer makes a bigger difference in whether the pictures are any good than the focal length does. I love your style and am trying to emulate it a bit myself, without much success thus far though...
Thanks mate. Just keep shooting. Over and over I was rubbish when I started
Really great. For me the 24mm photos are more interesting
Whatever lens you used, these are very nice shots. The couple must have been thrilled when they saw them.
Perso, I prefer the 35 look when shooting one or two people.
Definitely the 35mm for me in this setting. It makes the people more of the subjects and there is less distortion. But I like the 24mm more for landscapes or indoor shoots. Why not have both, they’re useful!
More like why not be a millionaire or something
Bharat Tanwar huh?
Great video, thank you. I am just getting to grips with the 35mm, so still playing and learning.
I went from the 35mm Zeiss to the 24 GM complemented by the Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA and for the meantime I'm happy with my choice!
The depth of field in your photos is insane you really catch the foreground mid and background
What lens would you recommend for large group photos ?
Now I want both of these lens
I'll go with 24mm, you can get wide and crop anytime you want..
Whose one in use any wedding event....???
Thanks bro, just the video I needed as I'm switching from fuji to sony and deciding what lens to go for. Going with 35mm.
35 is definitely perfect for me thanks for the comparation 👍
I use a 35 equiv but damn your 24 shots had some edge to them. But to be honest, I bet I'd feel that way about the 35 if you compared 35 to 50 or 85, I think it's the side by side that makes it feel that way
Chris, I enjoy the heck out of your videos! I just picked up the 24 - 1.4 and really enjoy it. Save your money and buy them both and enjoy!!
Was looking for a good video between these 2 focal lengths. Perfect
35mm is definitely more versatile. Love mine!
Hey thank you for the comparison! Does one skew the subject more than the other?
i didnt see anything hanging on his left armpit..thank you
You have no idea how much that bothers me lol I just cbf making the video again 😂
I love both and can’t decide which I prefer, so use always use two bodies and have both! My 35 on my R3 so I can also get a 50ish focal length at the same time =)
Are you talking about 24mm vs. 35mm on APSC or Full Frame ?
Both full frame
Buy 24mm, crop sensor and make 38mm, two focal in one lens.
Buy 35mm, crop sensor make 52mm, two focal in one lens.
I have to say that I hate to choose only one of those... currently using 35mm, but I miss my sigma 24mm f/1.4. There is something so magical about the geometry of photographed subjects and... I just don't know 🙈 I know 35mm f/1.8 is better as an only lens especially, when I do mostly video, but man... 24mm is soooo 🔥 I just don't know 🙈
Jordan JK Koman agreed
35mm! Oh and you have a massive hand! (in this video LOL)
Great vid as I'm looking at either. I was actually thinking of getting the 24 and if I needed to get the viewer to focus on a particular subject, I could crop it. Do you think that is something sensible to do?
I got both 24 and 35 art primes, But find to reach the 35 more.
After having watched it.. Feeling a bit meh! Here are my thoughts.
When comparing 2 focal lengths I think the one thing that should stay constant is the subject size. That means ur position relative to the subject should have changed with a change in focal length.
I'm sorry.. I still cannot decide between 24 and 35.
That’s fine in more of a scientific test but it’s kind of irrelevant for real world testing. So many reviews on RUclips are to planned, when you take the gear out in the field you won’t use it the same and get a different result, so I like to do my reviews how I would actually use the gear
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Yes i understand that Chris. Your presentation of the differences between the two are one facet here. Just that for me, i'm still undecided as for my style of shooting i try to frame the subject in much the same way, may it be an up close or a far out environmental portraiture. The difference is seen as a viewer. The experience the viewer gets is totally different. Sometimes i also do an environmental photo with an 85mm.
But hey, I'm not taking away from ur video. Youve done a great job n I appreciate the knowledge shared.
Oh totally not even arguing with you just giving you my view :) your point is totally valid
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Keep em videos coming Chris! Great work. Stay safe!
My fav: 24mm, in the hands of someone experienced as without experience pics can look unnatural. Thx!
i have the 35 and 24mm from sigma. 700 Euro for only 11mm ? oh yes! its 2 different lenses the look is amazing. i love my babys
35mm not far looks like 50mm do just potrait with lilbit more background its nice, but 24mm its always looks like paint whole surround object tells the story
i like 135 1.8, 85 1.8, 50 1.8
i love 24 1.4
yes 24, 50/55 combo is really good, i would say a 105 or 135 would be more versatile than the 85 but more costly ofcourse

35 looks like itd be cooler for video (what I'm looking for)
Hi Chris. Great photos on both lens.
35mm is best for beauty shoots and more closeup cinematic shots and 24 is good for landscapes and more wide shots.
I think that’s too general of a statement. “Beauty shots” is misleading if you know what I mean
one camera - 35mm. two cameras - 24 and 50mm.
Thanks for the video. I like the 35mm..
35 any day!
I own 28 , it's in between,but in this case definitely 35.

Hi Chris you think in 2020 it is still worth buying sony rIII?
Hey Chris, thanks for all the great content! They've certainly influenced a few purchase decisions of mine! I'm wondering if one day you could do a video/talk about what affect this youtube channel has had on your Wedding Photography Business? Have you found that it's brought in a few more bookings? Do you create a little bit of passive income from the videos? I'm considering starting a channel someday as youtube is my preferred social media platform out of all of them. Just a thought anyway - would be handy to hear your insights into starting a youtube channel!
Hey man yeah for sure if people are interested. It’s definitely becoming worth it even just the ad revenue is more than I thought it would be. I have also had a few bookings from my channel. Maybe 2 or 3 but all were $7000+ bookings.
Definitely recommend starting a channel tho man. Everyone has something interesting to talk about. Even if it’s a different angle. More channels the better in my opinion. Community not competition
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer cheers for the response. 28mm will be perfect.
24mm photos what aspect ratio do u shoot ? i mean in camera settings. or u just crop everything afterwards? nice photos really like the colors and the wide angle style really "transfers" the vibe of the place and the people of course
It’s just standard 3:2 I haven’t cropped anything
this has not helped me at all I still don't know which MM to get :/ Great video tho !
Finally!!! A video I waited for so long! Got 35mm but still, I love 24
I all most dropped my a7r3 in that water fall
Chris, did you ever compare 24-70 zooms with primes for Sony E ? I really wonder what is the difference in sharpness/contract/etc, and the comparison video would be super helpful for us to decide :)
Vadym Kriuchkov honestly I think people worry about sharpness to much so I’m probably not the right person to ask haha but in general I think there are 2 main things that seperate zooms and primes.
1) not having 1.4 they just look way different wide open but it only really matters if your going to shoot at 1.4 or similar I guess, I pretty much shoot 1.4 all day cause I love the look
2) I personally found my work got better when I switched to primes and I think it’s because when your fixed on one focal length your kind of forced to grow when you have to use what you got. Just my opinion
I like both 😭😭
If only they made like a 20-50mm f2 zoom ;)
35mm fits me best
35mm Looks Batter ❤
Legit did not see much of a difference - both looked great on the same body :)
24 mm 👍
