Keep Spinning That Vinyl!

I have used the Felt, Rubber, and Cork Mats, and my Favorite Mat by Far is an Acrylic Mat. The Sound is Excellent and there is no static.
I’ve been carrying a crate of records for years, & finally got a player again. Your channel has been invaluable!
It's amazing the difference some small things can make. The whole turntable, the plinth (base), tone arm, platter, everything all creates a resonant circuit so to speak, and if somethinf is just slightly off it makes a huge difference to the sound. I guess that makes sense when you think the stylus is moving less than the width of a human hair to create all that music for you. It's amazing it works at all sometimes
OMG!!!!!!! Thank you so much this was super easy to set up I got the same player as you and I just love it. I was gonna get a Crosley but you saved me so thank you for that. Theres so much that I have learned over the last couple of months about records and I'm so happy that it was from you. I don't have my speakers yet but I decided to play the record anyways just to see it in action and I was so surprised... I heard music... I was playing that's life by frank Sinatra and I heard every word with clarity it was an amazing first experience. I seriously enjoy your channel and I'm happy to finally be a part of the vinyl community. Thank you and keep the very interesting videos!!!
I agree with you never thought of reversing my leather mat and tried it : deeper bass : superbe thank you
You remind me of Eric Foreman
Oh my god. I can't unsee that now.
What about Acrylic?
Jarret, I'm enjoying your videos. Your the reason why I started with the LP-120, thank you. I love my turntable, along with the new receiver and speakers. I really just jumped straight in wide open, that's me, all or nothing. Did you know Amazon sold more turntables then any other audio device this past Christmas, vinyl IS back. Do you have a link or item number for the mat you recommend for the LP-120.
+Brewer65 Yeah! I read an article that said that about Amazon! So cool! Yeah it's the "Deer Hide Leather Turntable Mat" from Jake's Turntable Mats! It should be at the top of the search results on Amazon! Good luck!
I'm honestly not too worried about having the greatest sounding set up, I just don't want my records and needle to get worn out too early
Ok no worries
Those two are interconnected factors. Best sound = best physical interaction of the record player with the disc = highest longevity in terms of the mechanical wear.
I have a Aiwa PX-E860 (please don't judge me, I've been looking to upgrade for a while), it has no adjustability for the arm so the only way for me to improve it was to swap out the thin rubber mat for a thicker cork mat. The cork mat has two advantages, it did improve the sound quality (it separated the bass from the mid-range and made it punchier) and it raised the tone arm so it was perfectly level to the platter.
Hey jarret ive been here since 530 subscribers and just wanna say congrats with 2000 and great vids thanks jarret
Thanks so much Marcus!
You've missed the one which is becoming tops in the audiophile tables. Acrylic mats are available in different thickness and colours. It gives you the effect of an acrylic platter, but without the enormous cost and adds lustre to the platter. Therefore if you have invested heavily in top equipment in which an acrylic platter is not available, then the acrylic mat becomes an option. Catch up mate!
D. Paul Riderman exactly right! I use an Acrylic Mat on my Turntable & I Love it!!
Why do you guys always prompt Amazon? It has one of the worst records for treating it's employees. Jeff Bezos has said that if Amazon is ever listed in the top 100 companies for employee work satisfaction, we are doing something wrong. And how much more money does Bezos need? Promote some of the smaller suppliers.
man you're the king, thank you.
My old Kenwood has a rubber mat. It's hard to imagine that is is easy to hear the difference.
Rubber mats are cool too!
Because you won't i dare him to do a AB blind test with all the mats out there....
these videos are awesome. you rock man
thank you so much Derek! And thanks for watching! More great stuff on the way!
You should add acrylic turntable mat as an option. It's my favorite having tried every option you mentioned previously. Great channel btw!
I'm enjoying your videos so far, but for this one I was hoping you would go into more details about the other mat options, instead of quickly jumping to the deer hide leather mat. Mainly because that mat is currently unavailable on Amazon, and they don't know if/when it will be back in stock. I actually found that mat while searching for mats before I ran across your video. I ended up ordering the "Electrohome Turntable Platter Mat (Black Rubber)" (again, before seeing your video). It hasn't arrived yet, so I'm not sure if it was a good decision or not at this point.
The felt mat mine came with isnt perfectly flat and it makes my records look like there warped even on a brand new vinyl. Is the leather mat flat
I had no idea the felt mat included was meant to be used. It just looked like some protective packaging you threw away. I used it all the time anyway, but they should make that prominent on the packaging to keep it haha.
Just to let you know the link in your description for the deer hide mat works, but the product is no longer available until who knows when. Would you happen to be able to recommend another company that makes deer hide mats, or your second favorite kind of mat?
Great, but I'll keep the rubber mat for that I is on my belt drive Kenwood turntable; that has accurate speed because it has an IC servo motor. By the way, have you presented, and explained about accuracy in the two main speeds of turntables, both direct drive, and belt drive yet, Vinyl Eyezz? However, very interesting discovery with the leather mat.
Just received rubber mat in the post. There is a completely flat side and there is a deeply grooved side. Which side faces up please?
my player has a permanent rubber mat but it has grooves all over it and I am not sure why? could I place a mat over the existing one?
+Ben Glady You could try that but it might lift the platter too high and cause the needle to be at a wrong angle.
Can you provide any scientific data as to why a turntable mat should have any audible effect on the output signal of a given turntable, tonearm and cartridge combination? Did your statement that the mat material can have a "huge impact on your sound quality" result from comparisons done while knowing which material was being used? If so, your claim is completely invalid. The function of a turntable mat is to provide a surface that is softer than the vinyl record being played and to provide enough friction to prevent slippage of a warped record during play. Thus the ideal material to use is rubber. Hard materials such as cork would be undesirable for both of those purposes.
Hey I have a question, I was wondering if you could help!!! I have an LP 120 Audio-Technica, the Yahama receiver just like yours, and the same bookshelf speakers. On Sunday, all equipment was working perfect, but then on Tuesday it would not work. I have not changed any settings and I obviously turn the turntable and receiver off when I am not using it. The receiver and turntable turn on fine, the turntable is spinning at appropriate speed, and the needle (from what I know) looks totally normal. Do you know what could all of a sudden cause it to stop working? The only thing I can hear is a very low sound from the needle as the record spins if I put my ear really close and that's it. I was just hoping since you had the same equipment you could hopefully help! Thank you!
+Tucker Guignard I have two major questions, is your receiver on the correct input? And are your A and B Channels enabled? There's 2 buttons on the front of the receiver labeled A and B, if you press them they should turn on, enabling the speakers connected to them! Let me know if that works!
+Vinyl Eyezz You are a LIFE SAVER. Someone how my a and b channels got disabled...?
I am still very new to the equipment (as you can obviously tell lol)!!
Thank you so much I was stressing all day that I had messed something up!
+Tucker Guignard haha no worries! The same thing happened to me once! Glad I could help!
Have you tried a sorbathane mat?
Are all record mats the same thickness? If not wouldn’t you need to level the tone arm again?
Awesome as hell man!! Thanks for the help :)
Question. I like the idea of a leather mat...but my pro jekt turntable has a diameter of 11 inches and most every leather mat on amazon says “fits turntable with a 12 “ diameter. What do I do? Also...I have a few old record players from the mid 50’s that have turntables with 9 “ diameters. What can I use on these?
What about mats for controller turntables like the Rane 12? that only effect how slippery it is correct? Audio quality comes from computers music files
I bought a modified AR turntable (sound of the wood) which has a 40mm acrylic platter. Is a record mat recommended over placing the record directly no the acrylic platter? Thanks
If I out a mat, should I change my tone arm counter weight and anti skate?
what you can tell me about a rubber mat? I have a rubber one but I would like to change it if its necessary
My AT LP-5 came with a rubber mat. Didn't really see the need to change it, tbh...
I use a washi paper mat, made of somekind of mulberry tree paper
“If you consider yourself a true audiophile you may want to..” *harass* *Reddit* *users* *getting* *into* *this* *hobby*
I came here to see if there was an opinion on acrylic slipmats :/
You decide what mat you choose for
your turntable.
Please be aware that leather has disadvantages when DJing/mixing. The utility of slipmats is a whole other category not mentioned here.
Felt mats are good for DJs though
Cork don’t slip
Cool video, but how to clean record mat?
I clean my cork mat with a lint roller seldom.
why do you prefer suede side up compared to smooth side up?
I will like someone to do it for me I’m to sold to go that far
Toneyanne deserves a different mat & head shell.
Do we need to have a mat? Is it only just for sound quality?
Yes u need it
Psycho acoustics can dramatic, especially when you want to hear something because you spent money on it... and hey, you got a click and comment lol
What a complete nonsense a mat does NOT change anything in the audible range lol
Funny thing is the thumbnail of the thumbnail for these videos is the same record player I have the Pionneer Pl 516
Felt mat bad, expensive leather good. Screw the other two. LOL!
What a crock! You've lost all credibility.
I'd rather not own a turntable mat that is made of dead animal parts-I'll stick to rubber, thanx (Save your breath [thumbs], haters!).
Hey there. Just got my rubber mat in the post. So there's a completely flat side and a very indented grooved side. Which side faces up? Been reading a lot of different reports...any info on this would be helpful.
