    Fun story:
When Pat Morita was a young comedian he was working on Sanford & Son and his wife was pregnant. They were living in a tiny place and didn't have room for a new baby. He went to Redd Foxx to ask him for a raise to be able to afford a down payment on a house. Redd brought out his checkbook and signed off a check so Pat could buy the house outright. He told Redd he'd gladly pay him back and was told he didn't owe him any money, but that when his life is going well he was to do the same thing for others. Pat Morita did just that for dozens of people. He was truly the person we should all aspire to be like

Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi), had a difficult childhood which included spinal surgery. He was told he would never walk. His parents were Japanese immigrants to America, and during WWII the family were interned in a camp. He would go on to get involved in acting in his thirties and forties, starring in various tv series such as MASH and Happy Days. He was 52 when this film came along. He auditioned five times before being chosen for the part and received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He would then go on to star in another 3 sequels to The Karate Kid.
As a kid of the 80's, this film was such a huge part of my childhood and I've lost count of the number of times I've seen it. SO pleased that you enjoyed it as much as we did back then.

You have 3 years for the valorous act to be submitted for consideration, but Congress can waive this legal limit. For those who don't know, you could push start manual transmission cars if the starter motor quit. It's basically doing the same thing as the normal way of starting. When you release the clutch the car's motion will cause the internal parts of the engine to move allowing it to start, instead of the starter motor turning the engine's internals. Was a fairly common thing with older cars.

I earned my first degree black belt in karate when I was a tween and I would say, personally, that karate is a lot more about self-discipline and respect for others as well as yourself than it is fighting. In fact, my instructor always told us that fighting was the _last_ option if we absolutely couldn't get out of or run away from a situation.
The only time I've had to legitimately use anything I learned was in high school (I'm 37 now) at a pool party. I had my hair wrapped up in a towel after getting out of the pool, and one of the guys thought he was going to be an asshat by grabbing the towel, bending me over, and leading me around by the hair. Which he did. For all of two seconds after I verbally told him to stop and he didn't.
Before he knew what hit him he was on his back with my fist about a half inch from his nose followed by _"I TOLD you to STOP."_ Bending me over towards himself put me in a perfect position to rush him and then trip/throw him.
Needless to say, it felt good.

3:08 In manual transmissions, you can get a car started by popping the clutch while the car is in motion. So someone has to push the car to get it moving and another while having the clutch engaged, releases it and the car will start. We had to do this sometimes when the car battery was dead on our manual transmission (due to leaving the lights on).
There is a great scene in THE DETOUR where the father has his son "pop the clutch" to get the car started, but the boy ends up driving into a ditch. LOL

Came here looking for someone to point this out. I've owned manual transmission cars my whole life. I've even owned two hybrids that were manual. All of them I have push started/roll started at least once. The hybrids were weird to roll start because they required the 12v battery to be working to close the contactors on hybrid pack and when you roll started them with a mostly toast battery, then the hybrid drive system remained off and was basically dead weight. You could still drive, just down on power and half the instrument panel remained out. Not sure if their was an aux alternator or if you were basically firing the plugs on what little remained in the 12v battery, because normally the 12v was charged off the high voltage pack via a DC to DC converter, which was off when the hybrid drive system was not functioning.

This is a feel good movie and obviously, lots of it has become elements of our culture so it's good to see where that came from! Pat Morita was also a favorite on the Happy Days TV series. Here, his character previously served as a soldier in the 442nd Combat Team, which became the 442nd Infantry Regiment. It was composed of all Japanese-Americans and fought against the Germans in WWII. It is the most highly decorated unit in the US Army. The medal that Daniel lifted out of the locker was the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the US. Usually bestowed posthumously because your deed was so heroic, you didn't survive.
Also, there are two words that are easy to confuse. Bonsai is the art of growing and shaping miniature trees in a tray or a pot. Banzai, is the shortened version of a WWII Japanese battle cry that means Long Live His Majesty The Emperor.

Oh yeah, the ability to push a car to start was done by the older "manual" cars from before automatic transmissions were in pretty much every car coming off the lines. It helped SO many youngsters sneak out for doing sneaky dates or parties in country areas due to the ability to push car away from home (aka sleeping parents) then using either pure hushpuppy power (shoes) to build up enough speed or better yet go down a slight hill and pop the clutch. A few whiplash-causing jerks and brrrruuumm car is going.

As a teenager growing up in Scotland in the eighties, Daniel and Mr Miyagi were something completely different to what you normally saw in Hollywood films. Daniel just seemed like a normal kid, he wasn't a nerd, or a jock, he had bad and good moods, but he wasn't a rebel, plus he didn't have a lot of money or possessions. He was just this quirky but believable kid. As for Mr Miyagi, it was just so nice to see a man in films who wasn't ultra-violent and had some humility. I loved KKII as well, Daniel grew up a lot, and Mr Miyagi's back story was fleshed out. There's a really touching scene where Mr Miyagi is grieving for his father, and Daniel comforts him by sharing his experience of bereavement. Of course it helps that Daniel was, and still is😍😍😍😄

Karate, along with most any other physical activities, develops something called muscle memory through repetitive actions. After time your muscles "remember" how to behave in order to achieve a desired result, so the person no longer has to concentrate on that consciously anymore. As a drummer, I've utilized this technique for decades; it's much more enjoyable when you're not having to focus on counting and such lol

You put remember in quotes but it IS actually memory. Muscle cells are almost the same as braincells, both are neurons. Both strengthen their function with repeated use. Using the same string of neurons means the process gets faster and easier to initiate, as the pathways become optimised for a specific action. I know someone who had a muscle graft from another donor and the muscle memory was massively mismatched until he trained to use them together because the donor used their muscles differently to do different things.

The producer of the film fought for Pat and kinda tricked the studio and director into giving him a chance. The rest is history.

He started his stand-up career not long after WWII, when people were still sore about Pearl Harbor and it wasn't a great time to be Japanese-American. He faced some potentially hostile audiences and managed to bring them over to his side using self-deprecating jokes that let the tension out of the room. He earned the nickname "the hip Nip" (back during a time when that was seen more as a term of endearment than offensive). It's amazing how humor can bring people together, when done right.

The story of Mr Miyagi's wife and kid dying in a US Japanese internment camp was inspired by Pat Morita's own life. When he was a kid, at the age of 11, he was sent to a clinic to repair his damaged legs. While still in recovery, he was yanked out of bed by two federal agents and marched off to an outdoor prison for the crime of being of Japanese descent. He was too young to serve in the military but he often watched people step out of their prison huts, don US army uniforms and go off to fight in WWII.

Sadly, Pat Morita, who played Mr. Miyagi, did pass away several years ago. He was an amazing actor. Some of the producers were skeptical about casting him, because all his previous acting had been in comedic roles, but he proved without a doubt that he was even better as a dramatic actor with this film. On another note, if you haven't already reviewed it, I highly recommend "Adventures in Babysitting". Ali (Elisabeth Shue) is 21 and Johnny (William Zabka) is the youngest and only actual teenager at 19. Ralph always had a baby face and was cast in a lot of younger roles because of it. Me; yes....yes you are!

  • @silverlobo2135
    @silverlobo2135 2 года назад

    Hello Ashleigh
To start, Pat Morita was first introduced to American audiences as 1 of the Al's of Al's Dinner in "happy Days" where the main characters used to go hang out and eat.
Second, manual (gearshift) cars can be restarted by pushing the car to a a lite speed while pushing down the clutch (3rd pedal) while in 1st gear. Once it is going at a good speed, you lift the foot of the clutch and the car should restart. Sometimes it might take a few attempts to get it started. Only reasons it would not start would be lack of gas or oil, mechanical problems (engine, transmission, radiator, carburetor), or serious electrical problems.
The scene with the chopsticks and fly actually happened for real. Pat Morita's reaction was actually genuine. Up to this moment, he himself had never been able to do what Ralph Macchio did in the scene.
Ali's parents do not see Johnny is a "douchebag" because he is a child of wealth same social status, and privilege just like them. So they permit his behavior.
As for the "Alli" character, you have to remember that she comes from a prominent wealthy family of privilege. Hence, she will have some 'no-so-nice' views and attitudes to people not of her status'. But because of going to public school (strange that she is not in a private school) and Daniel, she starts to be more fair and accepting of other people with different backgrounds and social levels than her.
Unfortunately we lost Mr. Morita in late 2005 of kidney failure. For those of us that enjoyed his work, it was a sad ending to that year. He was a well beloved actor.
