I definitely was too!! Pretty much every shot was a 30 second exposure wide open at f1.8 I believe and they still were a bit underexposed. Next time I would definitely bring a wire shutter release that has a lock so I could do an even longer exposure using the bulb setting
@@GabrielSpence I think they came out great, really love the contrast and mystery in the dark. Much more interesting than if there were detail in those shadows.
Ektar is only ISO 25 in tungsten light. and will have a significant reciprocity failure beginning from about 10 seconds of exposure. If you tahe these requirements into account, there is no reason for not using this film. Of course, everything with using daylight film in tungsten light will apply.
Love these photos. I think the underexposure worked well for these photos. It made the pictures much more moodier. And I know that you said you weren't a big fan of some of the colours, but I actually really like how ektar rendered these shots. Great compositions too. Very cinematic.
thanks so much I think it definitely gave the photos a feeling that I wasn’t expecting and it kind of caught me off guard when I got the scans back but in retrospect I really do like how they turned out
good to know I’ve never actually shot portra 160 I’ll have to give it a try this was probably my 4th or 5th roll of film ever so I kinda wish I had shot it at day but now I know better 😂 thanks for watching
Very impressed with the results you got. One of the first ones you said you were not a fan of, I thought it was good. The house, I do agree it is an awesome pic. To me, it gives a Horror movie feel...amazing. While I would normally use either Portra, or even Gold for night time, this has inspired me to try a roll of Ektar for night photography. Especially with the red brick buildings.
@@GabrielSpence definitely going to try it at night. I use it mainly for car shows, hot air Balloon festivals and fall foliage. Looking forward to trying that.
I think these turned out very well ! I'm impressed with the Ektar 100....... I was in Budapest, Hungary for ten days, shooting various film brands.... but my best photos by far were with the Ektar 100. Good job.
Thank so much! I’ve always wanted to vivid Budapest I’ve heard many people say it’s one of their favorite cities. I agree Ektar completely exceeded my expectations!
@@GabrielSpence Budapest is a very old and architecturally interesting city... as is much of Europe..... much more and varied architecture than we have here!! Go there.
Hahah i just got a Nikon F80/N80 and planning on doing car trails long exposure with Ektar 100 because of its vibrancy. I know this film behaves really well in well light situations. But hey your night time photos turned out to be great!
That sounds really cool I’d love to see how those pictures turn out the film definitely has a lot of color to it just make sure to overexposed it just a little bit
woah that’s amazing I’m not too sure I’ve never worked with expired film before all I know is they need to be overexposed a bit depending on their age but I’d love to see the results once you get them
From New Zealand man! :) love your videos dude, was just going to ask, I've just been out shooting a roll tonight and was wondering what your shutter speeds were at? and were you using a tripod?
Thank you!! Yes I was using a tripod I think each shot was maxed out at 30 seconds but the cameras I was using the Nikon n80 does have a bulb setting so I could technically have held it down and let it go longer
That’s good to know!! I’ve only shot a few rolls of film in my whole life and this roll I definitely underexposed so next time I gotta try it out again
I think I used an aperture of around f8 but honestly it’s been such a long time I don’t exactly remember i did use aperture priority mode which was good but underexposed like in these photos which can definitely be a if that’s what you’re going for
This was one of my first rolls of film I ever shot so I was still getting used to the exposure (and didn’t really understand what a stop was ) but looking back they’re not bad
@@GabrielSpence . Im about to do some night shooting with Ektar100, I'm pulling the film and shooting at 50 ISO. My camera is completely manual (by choice) so Im going for self timed long exposures.
Just use a tripod and you'll have whatever exposure time you'll ever want or need. Not all shots had to be taken hand held. Tripod is your friend, not your enemy 😉

2:55 Gabriel, this is an amazing shot. So well executed. The flare does not bother me.
Thank you so much honestly looking bakc I’m super proud of these shots I gotta shoot more film at nighttime
Why do most of these film channels have a host wearing a beanie and lo-fi music?
It’s just a film channel thing but also check out my other film video about the cheapest color film that ones better haha
really surprised that this film did so well at night, since it’s basically a film that screams for more light

Priceless timeless awesome work and endless depth. Thanks
such kind words thank you so much
never dared to shoot 100 film at night. You have motivated me
The photos surprised me with how well they came out and how fine the grain was! Excited to do more

Push it two stops. Awesome saturation and contrast, plus the ISO boost you’re looking for.
Great advice thank you!
i saw the way he wore his beanie and i knew i could trust him
I love you I love you ahah
love the night photography with ektar 100👌🏼
Thank you!!!
0:05 the beanie hahahahahahhahhahhahhhhahahahahaha
hahahah love u
Nice shots. Analog night photography is not easy.
thanks this was one of the first times I did it and I'm really really happy with the results
@@GabrielSpence Did you just use the N80's matrix metering?
yes I believe so I would definitely do pretty long exposures because film loses sensitivity the longer you expose it
Really like your pics but yeah Ektar loves light.
I did long exposure on Portra 160 and came out really nice and super clean.
good to know I’ve never actually shot portra 160 I’ll have to give it a try this was probably my 4th or 5th roll of film ever so I kinda wish I had shot it at day but now I know better 😂 thanks for watching

35mm or Med format?
35mm I wish it was medium but I have no clue how to use that yet
thanks for the tips
No problem thanks for watching!!
I disagree, I think it’s the best film for night photography
That’s good to know!! I’ve only shot a few rolls of film in my whole life and this roll I definitely underexposed so next time I gotta try it out again
Definitely the best for low grain photos
Did you rate it at ISO 200?
Yes
I’m pretty sure for most of them I just went for a full 30 seconds
