  • This week I decided to brave the cold and shoot some night photography. I shot a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 with my Mamiya RB67.
    Have you shot any night photography or long exposures using Ektar? I'd love to hear your thoughts below.
    Camera: Mamiya RB67

    Glad to finally see someone shooting 100 speed film at night, this trend that one needs Cinestill for night shots is ridiculous. Nice shots by the way!

      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад +3

      I have noticed that recently. While, I think Cinestill does benefit from the tungsten lights at night; I’ve never used anything over 400 iso for night shots.

    Great video. Dude, how do you meter film at night. For whatever reason I can never get it right. Do you just double the exposure time the meter says for reciprocity?

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад +3

      Every film has a different reciprocity rating. I highly recommend getting the Reciprocity Timer app. Maybe even stick to one film stock for night photography for a bit and get comfortable with how it works.

    I've used Ektar 100 before, but just picked up a roll today because I wanted to experiment with night time lighting with this film. Ended up finding this video. I have a tripod and I could use that, but have you or anyone reading the comments ever used this film while using a wide open aperture (F2 in my case) and 60th shutter speed...just doing hand held shots while keeping a light source within the frame. I kind of like that moody underexposed look with mostly highlights and darkness (negative space).

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад

      Personally, I have not tried going that route. I like to keep my stuff around f8 if possible. Ultimately, it would come down to the light source in the scene and just how much light it is putting off. I would be careful though. Personally, I do not like how Ektar looks when under exposed.

    Alright I've gotta ask cause I've finally found someone who wears glasses and shoots an rb67 with the prism finder! Did you have to get a different diopter to work with your prescription lenses? I had the worst trouble with my bronica etrs because of it and eventually sold it. I really want to get a prism finder for my rb67 but hesitant to do it if I'm going on a wild goose chase for a correct diopter :/

    Dumb question but did you connect the the cable to the lens or camera? Also would you keep it on Bulb mode or? Please help I've never shot at night .

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад

      If you want to use the mirror lock up function then you will need to connect the cable to the lens. Bulb mode would be used for any exposure over 1 second.

    • @Kodakj
      @Kodakj 4 года назад

      @@ZachParksPhoto what if you connect it to the shutter button? I have an RZ and i see people put it in different spots. I noticed Willem V. just connects to shutter even if exposure is more than a second so is mirror lock up required?

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад +1

      If it’s just connected to the shutter button then you won’t be using the mirror lock up which could cause camera shake. If it’s not a very slow shutter speed, you’ll be fine.

    Hi, great work! Shooting Ektar 100 at night, fantastic! Is it your metering app at 09:23? Thanks man!

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад

      The app on my phone is called mylightmeter. I find it to work pretty well. I’ve always been happy with my exposures when using it.

    • @kolabuzlu
      @kolabuzlu 4 года назад

      @@ZachParksPhoto thanks for your reply. I also use an Android app for metering but photos turn out underexposed all the time :) are you metering the shadows? What else can I do? Thank you again

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад

      Derin Hakan Karakurt you may want to invest in a proper spot meter then. When I first started shooting, I didn’t have a working light meter. I made a lot of mistakes but it also taught me how to read the light with my own eyes. Between the phone app and my incident meter, I’m able to make a correct exposure. A phone app alone is not going to be super precise in tricky lighting situations.

  • @izaaccostiniano2812
    @izaaccostiniano2812 4 года назад

    How would you position the Minolta light meter for your night exposures?

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад

      That varies from scene to scene. Sometimes I’ll just take a reading in the shadows and use my phone’s meter to get a general reading. Sometimes I’ll walk around the scene and take different readings.

    What is the best Focusing screen?

    • @ZachParksPhoto
      @ZachParksPhoto  4 года назад +1

      I’ve only ever used the standard matte screen. I think it’s the A. I’d like to get the split prism screen, but those are pretty hard to come by.
