- Is Himi gouache good? I’ll be unboxing, swatching and painting with Himi gouache. And I’ll give you my first impressions about this gouache, is it trendy for a reason? Gouache is my favorite medium. So far I’ve been painting only with artist-quality paint. It’s time to test this more affordable gouache in cups.

The irony is I got these on a whim, because they were on mega cheap sale and I'd never earnestly used gouache. In spite of the exact difficulties you describe here, I did discover I would enjoy the medium...so I got a set of mixing colors from Schminke and I'm much happier with them. I'm giving the Himi away to a local charity.

Completely agreed, I started my gouache journey with Holbein and Winsor newton designer gouaches. I also wanted to try this trendy gouache but was so disappointed. I had the same experiences as you and it’s nice to see this sentiment confirmed because when I did an unboxing video the comments defending this paint made me feel like I received a faulty set. But no, it’s just a cheap formula 🤷🏻♀️ and the users who start with this gouache doesn’t know quality paint.
Also in my experience as the himi paint starts drying up, when reactivated it feels less… plasticy or streaky. A bit more normal. So I am suspicious whatever the manufacturers added into it to keep it wet affects the way the paint works.

I got himi as a beginner and it was frustrating because even getting yellow petals to look opaque was difficult and I contaminated everything 😂 luckily I have not given up and learnt that every paint is different and mixing is an art in itself thanks for the vlog I’m learning all the time 😀
Well, i must say that yellows are transparent, no matter the brand. A good way to make them opaque is to paint a layer of white first, then two layers of yellow on top.

I used Arteza....that's very good as you had mentioned...true!but only problem with Arteza is individual tubes are not available....only sets
I know, it’s the reason why I moved from Arteza at first when I needed to refill some colors. So I tried new brands and discovered better quality!
My issues with Arteza Gouache is the tubes themselves can be hard to open even when wiping off the excess from the tip it's the metal tube seems weaker than others I have used

I think it really depends what you use them for and how. For example:
I make stamps and print them onto watercolor paper then paint the image the exact same and sell them (or that's my goal anyway)
So I wanted to buy the big set of himi gouache so I don't have to continue to mix my colors and consistency.
The thing with selling art from Himi is that you don't have any information on lightfastness, so you don't know how fast the colors will fade. And they will.
I bought this set a year ago. I am a fairly new painter and wanted to try gouache. My only issue with this paint is that it dries out and needs to be mixed up with some water fairly often.
This is quite common to all brands of gouache, but this one is drying faster than artist quality I think.
Your both review of himi gouache was so helpful.....I saw your other vdo just few days ago but I had already ordered 24 colour box of himi jelly gouche....so I added mont marte gouache set (the other professional gouache paints are so expensive here in Bangladesh most of them cost 10k+ while Himi is 1k only and mont marte is 750 in Bangladeshi currency) I then thought many many people use Himi jelly gouache and they make the most beautiful art pieces, maybe I'll learn after sometime....I still do have hope though but that layering thing and just like you said brush strokes being noticeable and heavy use of tge paint those things are just so real.......i was so frustrated today. I made an art piece which have clouds, first day I tried the layering and it got a little muddy and the white texture that I wanted was just not (idk the word) there, it got mixed with the paint underneath so I let it dry, basically left it for 3-4 days and I tried today and the seme thing happened with layering...I am just so frustrated both Himi and mont marte are really not working for me to paint a landscape and layering is just sooooo much harder, but you know for a solid background or mixing colors it helped....idk what to do with this...can you pls make a video about some of the best quality gouache paints that you have tried so far....loving your videos btw

I bought these because a friend recommended it and I wanted to try something other than watercolor for a change. Another thing I would note is because of how they are set up (jelly cups) you have to regularly spray them with some water to keep them from drying out completely which makes them very susceptible to mold. I still had a decent amount of paint for most of the colors but I had to prematurely throw them out because of the mold that covered several of them :(
Maybe I got a little too carried away keeping them moist but it is still a point to consider before picking these up
That's what I did too, sprayed it to keep it moist, and stored it in the fridge. Had no mould, though.
Mine are 2 years old, never sprayed or used glycerin, no mould, still juicy, but I use a snap lock bag to store them in after putting the middle palette on, then click the top back on over top

You're welcome!!! I was afraid there was a problem on my website.
I have this set and there was a learning curve with using it. I use it more in a painterly way I don't always lay down a base color. Instead I try to make a few colors and go back and forth using them to build a base layer to start off with. Than go back in with other colors to add details highlights and shadows still painterly. Obviously using less water with cheaper brands of gouache is better because they are all ready lower quality than band names brands but I feel like each of a learning curve and u have play around with each to find out what works for u the user. Just some thoughts for others to keep in mind
I've changed my mind since this video. I'm using Himi for painting without blending, and it's going fine. I'll make another video about this!

Not particularly! and I’m quite sensitive so I would have noticed.
As someone that owns gouache I blv the smell isn't that bad
