Good to know that stuff like this exists, thanks for keeping us in the loop :) If you think about it, now foam work and 3D printing can get directly connected if you want to. Print the mold, push the foam clay in and you are set. Ever thought about a collab with people like 3D Printing Nerd or Makers Muse? Could be a great way to connect two maker branches and especially MM is very knowledgable in the field, but 3DPN is probably not far behind ^^ Could also mean a bit more exposure for you.

I've heard from puppet builders that Model Magic crumbles apart after some time. Many noses have fallen apart so they don't use it anymore. So this would be great for noses.

It's so hard to get these kind of products in my country, you can't even get pasti-dip. But I think I found something similar to this at a local chinese store, of all places. It is sold as children's air-dry clay/toy (I've found it in the toys section and at the art supplies section) and from the little tests I've made with it, it seems to compare: dries fast and SUPER light, sticks to itself, after dry feels like eva foam, you can paint and sand it. It is flexible and picks up details in molds (I tested with a cameo mold, so really tiny details). I just observed that if the objects is too thin and you do bend it forcefully, it does break I don't know if that happens with the braind of foam you've worked with. And it comes in a myriad of colors, apparently you can even mix your own by mixing colors, that I have not tested because all the ones I bought were gray. I've bought a few bags to try out since a cosplay I want to make has detailed shoulder pads and I'll see how it really performs. Best part is, I bought it for 0.95€ for a 60gr. bag so if it does work, it will be amazing.
Foam clay takes quite awhile to dry, at least 24 hours in my experience. It's extremely flexible but it does have a breaking point. You really have to tear at though. It sounds like you have a model magic clone.

The problem with my country is that Customs is very tight and usually shipping is insane when buying online, at time the shipping is more expensive than the product itself *shrug* So when we see this amazing tutorials by makers or cosplayers from other countries, they use products we can't so readily find. It's a fight to find local alternatives. Besides, the cosplay community is still sort of fledgling, not that much popular, still a bit misunderstood and you don't see much of builds like large props and armors, most people go for costuming instead of building.

I just think, that used in parts that do not require much stressing and not used thinly - if that makes sense - it's an alternative. I could probably build a mask just as Ted did, but I'd probably not put much faith in making the teeth using the product I have at hand, it'd probably break with a couple of hard nudges. I have only made minor tests with it (thus why I said it dries extra fast, my test was a small and relatively thin chunk). Soon enough I'll know if it is really usefull, I'll be using it for some sculpting on some shoulder pauldrons. Right now, it's the only thing I have easy access to *shrug*

I tried making a stopmotion puppet out of Model Magic a few years back. It was really brittle on the outside and would crack. The inside stayed gooey. Model Magic would work well for decoration pieces that dont get handled often. Will try that Foam Mo and see if that makes better puppets. Thank you for the review video TED!
I have made AMAZING sculptures out of Model Magic. I don’t bend them. The stuff is not cured the next day or for even in a week. It takes some time for Model Magic to fully harden. When it does, it’s AMAZING! If you saw the stuff I sculpt with it, you would see that it’s great.
so im curious, would this be good to use for making seams disappear, been something ive noticed, that i haven seen any online prop makers try to use it for this type of application.
I can see this being perfect for making small details on a gun or helmet but i dont know if its cost effective for bigger pieces like pauldrons or leg armor. Great video nonetheless,sir!
Unfortunately that method does not work. The nice thing is that you can sculpt in a lot of those details before it dries instead. :) Also, you can use a wood burning tool to burn in details though. Great question!

@@mattgranberg5639 I'm not sure how full if a mask you are talking. And are you wanting it to be sturdy like a harder surface sturdy or just more flexible sturdy? A great way to seal it off is once the outer surface is dried you just plastidip the whole thing and that will stop the are from getting to it and it will stop the full drying process. Great video! Here in Brazil we have one type of foam clay too, in the frist days the clay is wonderful, but in one week it starts to crack, like the Model Magic. In the Foam-mo does this also happen? Or does the quality continue even after a long time?

It can work as a large gap filler but does not feather perfectly. I think Evil Ted said if you need to use for large gaps then you might want to consider remaking the piece! =P
I'm confused, it seems like magic. Did you stick the foam-mo onto the eva foam without any type of glue/adhesive? It can just stick onto things on its' own? :O
For things like fingers or spiks on figures how well dose it stay and is there a like a glue I can use for like say im making a figure with thin horns or spiks on the head is there a way to make them not fall of ?

i found foam clay in small Containers in many colors, for example for kids. its not same like the Cosplay foam clay? i think cosplay foam clay is not the same and better than the colorful foam clays ive found.
Every North American retailer that sells foam clay are out of stock. I have found two retailer but one is in Belgium, the other is in Australia and the shipping cost is more then double what the product costs. Super bummed!!!

Looks like great stuff. With the dragon head , you maybe could have made it a bit longer to cover the join in the foam. The mask looks great.

You can. Just take a while for it to completely dry before sanding it.

JustTakeItInStride you can use barge cement glue line normal
Yes. by adding water to the surface of the EVA foam. But I would still seal it before painting it to ensure it stays in place.

How's the weight once dried? Heavy like clay can be or light like regular foam?
It's exactly like foam im every way when dry except it's exceptionally springy.
Very light like foam.
What would you use as a mold release for making masks off of a life cast or Styrofoam head?
Baby powder mixed with liquid ivory dish soap.
Car wax works as a good release.

It was a little close to or a little over 100 dollars and had a person in cosplay on the front of the box. What are your thoughts on particular brands of dremels.

The clay is great but hotglue won't stick to it at all. Contact cement seems to work fine. I am surprised it sticks so well using just water.
It sick Perry well with the water, but you still want to seal it first before painting it.
