  • Here are my thoughts on the latest Hollywood trend (seen in everything from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Jurassic World: Dominion to Ghostbusters: Afterlife to Spider-Man: No Way Home) of bringing back old heroes in new movies, why it's a problem, and how it can sometimes be done well.

I honestly think Ghostbusters did a decent job with it. No Way Home did d a great job with it I thought. Same with Creed and Halloween. If its done well then it can be good.

Ghostbusters didn’t do any good job. They appeared in a lazy third act. It’s such a bad movie.

Is it overdone? Yes. Do I enjoy it everytime it's done? Yes.

If creed 3 doesn’t do too good, both financially and critically, this will confirm this theory further.

I know you didn’t bring these specific films up because I know you didn’t want to start a flame war. But I’ll bring it up so if it does start, it’s not because of you. But anyways…
I think the SW sequel trilogy shows both the right way and the wrong way to bring back an old hero.
The right way: in The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker is not the man he was 30 years ago. And it’s used to show a different side of him and give him new challenges to overcome like his failure to learn from the Jedi’s failures or his failure in how he handled Kylo Ren. Not only does it make TLJ infinitely more powerful than any of the other 2 ST films, but it’s for this reason why I still love watching the film to this day.
The wrong way: in The Rise of Skywalker, Lando and Palpatine are brought back just for nostalgia. You cut them both out and not only does the movie stay the same but would have been better if they weren’t in it. Because there’s nothing new that they add to the narrative nor do they get to do anything new that could add something to their character. (And in the case of Palpatine, his presence not only hurts his character, but the greater story at large.)

I disagree that nothing original is coming out right now. I can think of more than just 5 movies that were great and were original. I think the 2010's have had so many great original movies like 1917, The A Quiet Place franchise, A ton of A24 movies, Knives Out and so many more but that was just off the top of my head. Yes there seems to be a lack of originality right now with movies and even TV shows but at the same time I think there are a lot of original great movies and TV shows too but I guess they get overlooked or forgotten about for some reason. Also even before the 2010's franchises were always coming back and being rebooted but I think the internet has made it more noticeable now. I also do think they have done it at a higher rate too but it's hard to tell right now

I think The Force Awakens is the main thing that broke everyone's brains and ushered this whole legasequel trend in. Marketing the return of old characters and making $2 billion is probably what sealed the deal. The big problem is that all these movies treat the legacy characters like action figures; it's fun to see them in the short term but it doesn't do anything for the narrative in the long run. It also means that the characters can never truly have an ending and they'll keep coming back until the actors are dead.
You listed some great examples of legasequels being done right but I would put Matrix 4 in that category as well. Instead of trying to recapture the magic of the first one or set up more movies, it did something new and wrapped up the emotional arc of the series in a more satisfying way than they did initially in the 3rd movie.
Sorry, this is so long, I have too many thoughts on this trend.

I still think No Way Home is the best use of this and I think other movies should look to it as a blueprint.

I agree with this I think should do it when their a story to be told I think no way home top Gun and Star Wars episode 7 and 8 did this the best although even if there no point to be there it’s still cool

I think you described Creed perfectly in this example, and the reason I like creed more over any of the other films that do this. Creed is it's own story. While Rocky is along for the ride. The other films you mention like Jurassic World and Ghostbusters started with new characters and a new story, but the original characters quickly overtook the story. And it's why I found No Way Home to work so well. The old characters don't overtake the story and feel of the film, it's still the new character's journey.

The Last Jedi is the perfect bringing back old characters, but focus on the new characters and a completely original story with them. Anti-nostalgia movie ❤️

also helps to have talented filmmakers. A good movie is a good movie. I dont care if it is another installment in a franchise. Ryan coogler, denis villeneuve and rian johnson have made some great movies. and thats all that matters

Haven't actually watched hed the video yet so you may have address this, but I mostly agree except when they bring back actors like Tobey who are still in the prime of their lives. Some of these actors can still deliver great performances and stories before they do get too old like Harrison Ford.

Well would you rather have our old heroes shunned, mocked and spit on the face by the new heroes (ie Ghostbusters 2016) and have the new heroes be forcefully and arbitrarily be placed in the shoes of the old one? Part of me thinks you would because… well, you’re an film critic and they often don’t get the best reputation. Some trends yelled better results. Just cause it’s overdone, doesn’t always mean it’s bad. If so, try me!

Also, this “troupe” you’re crying about actually has a more nuance name. It’s called “Passing the Torch”. Now whether you think it’s for money or whatever derogatory label you critics love to place and generalise on filmmakers, there is a good reason for some of them. Should they want to keep the franchise going or give it an ending it deserves, they give it to the new generation. I know you hate the concept and existence of money, but do you think they brought back the OG Ghostbusters after the travesty of the 2016 version just because money? If you hate money so much, go live poor and starve! Or better yet, demand your bills and legal fees to be free!
EDIT: Oh so you do understand the troupe, but you still don’t think it’s good because it’s nostalgic bait? Jesus, you would make a “but” out of anything!
