When I go over a hill (one you can almost catch air going 60 mph) I hear a clunk on the drivers front as the truck (2005 f150 4x4) crests the hill. I had upper control arms, 4x4 actuator replaced by a mechanic before this.
I rarely comment, but this absolutely deserves a great comment. Thank you for the clear explanation and camera view. You build the confidence for me people like me who is a complete novice to challenge this work in a DIY situation.
This is really cool. I've had what I would describe as a knocking sound for the last 2 years in my car and no one could tell me what it was. I'm so glad I found this video because I just noticed a few days ago that my tire moves exactly how his did in the start of the video. I'm super excited it's not something way worse. The best person to fix things is yourself. So glad I found this video!!! I replaced my cv joint hoping that was it and it didn't go away. Now I'm fairly confident it's the tire rod end
Nice to see Andy uses the TLAR (that looks about right) method that most of us non-pros have been using because of the lack of specialized tools in the tool box. Thanks guys! Dave J
Great, thorough tutorial. Thanks. Don't forget the locking pin on the inner tie rod. It goes thru a little hole on the nut. We saw it break off the old one when he took it off.
Watched a few of these, they’ve been great. Also got this to do on my Edge Sport. Intermittent clack coming from front going over sharp humps. Jacked it, checked it, inner tie rod.
Wow. This guys voice is really relaxing 😮 ive always hated learning how to work on cars (even growing up my dad made me help him in his garage) Id pay to have my car fixed but service is too expensive for my wallet. This was actually fun and calming to watch
Did this many time in the past on many cars and when you mark where the tie rod end is installed (number of turns sure helps), you don't need an expensive realignment job. Always worked for me without an alignment.
Excellent video. I get a popping noise when turning either way. My wheel also shakes from side to side which suggest inner & outer tie rod on both sides. But the noise sounds like it is coming from my rack. My guess I need to change out the Rack & pinion. I've changed out the upper ball joints.
problem is this is not really a diagnose because it is OBVIOUSLY knocking and easy to spot, problem starts when everything feels and looks tight but car is thumping , then real Diagnose starts
Interesting timing my mechanic told me I needed new tie rods almost two weeks ago. We're now planning to get them replaced. Definitely been hearing thumping noise.
Protip for the boot if it's too tight or hard to get on. Fold it around the edge and unfold it onto the rack before ziptying. Make sure it's seated correctly first of course.
Not stupid at all. If you don’t know then you don’t know. Tie rod is what help steer your vehicle. Driveshaft is what help make the vehicle go. It’s inserted into your transmission, and from your transmission to your rear end/axles
I alway appreciate you guys doing this for us DIY people lol. I have a question. I drive a Chevy cobalt 2008 and Its a really good car but lately everything time I break my Steering wheel start to shake viciously. I had the rotator changed a couple months ago. I'm still feeling that vibration. Any Idea what it can be?
Wheel bearings , or stabilizer rods, probably wheel bearings Cheap fix your self use thick grease. Oh yes replace them if it is it. Do check ball joints too.
What ever happened to a book on your ride ? A manual that explains how to do ? Thats how i fix all my rides. Im self taught. Ps if your tie rod broke you can't drive it there's no steering Tie rods steer the wheels
My lower control arm looks just like that one (I have a Pontiac G6). I hear a pop from the front end when I accelerate from a stop. I've replaced all the brake, steering and suspension parts. All that's left is the rack and possibly a motor mount.
I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztek and I just recently replaced all the front suspension including the axles, wheel bearings, brake system, inner and outter tie rods, struts, upper and lower control arms. I also replaced the rear springs. This fixed all noises and gave me the stock height back as well. Nothing like a new suspension.
I used to cycle, racing bike. When the bearings in the headset of the handlebars got worn you can feel a kicking and bumping - the feeling through the steering from tie rod ball joint wear feels almost the same to me.

Great guide. Question, Possible cause of a rhythmic noise at low speed going forward but not backward on a 2005 GMC Yukon XL all wheel drive. I wish I could add the sound. It does not seem to be a wheel bearing sound. It's more similar to rubber sole shoe crunch on a shiny tile or wood floor.
I have that same torque wrench. Its good but i hate that it doesnt reverse. Especially since a lot of lug nuts these days are those crappy 2 piece ones that swell so it can be a PITA to get the sockets off sometimes
I have a 02 Pontiac firebird I put my outer tie rod on exactly as you did, but when I put the tires back on & tried too drive, I noticed a humping feeling so I backed my car back in the driveway, what could be the problem Now?? SCR.
The diagnosis of this issue seems to be pretty identical to a bad hub assembly/wheel bearing. When you don't have the luxury of lifting the car - what might be a good way to tell the two issues apart?
From a stop to start clank. Sounds from my recent brake work. I had trouble but I was sure I checked things ...I have a feeling I need to also change the axle again. Am really tired of fixing myself. When I tried a professional I am not getting the help I need
How does the inner tie rod cause your truck to shake in the steering wheel at high speeds ....? Just recently changed out both inner and outer and it started vibrating at high speeds, tire are balanced. It makes rapid repetitive shake, almost feels like I have a flat tire .. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated.
The wheels on my 2001 Honda Accord stick out about an inch too far. This causes premature wear and tear on the tie rod bushings. I change them regularly so they don't come apart or thump. Parts are cheap too. The rims ARE kool though.
Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Andy, Great video Bro 😉. Is it safe to drive with a worn outer tie rod ball joint (up and down movement in the ball joint) and growling wheel bearing on the same side wheel until I can afford to get them replaced? Thanks, Mike
I had a Ford that was making a thumping noise checked everything nothing was loose I find out later I had a broken spring on my strut when it broke you couldn't tell it made the spring shorter so when you went over bumps
Grabbijg the wheel at 9 and 3 oclock can also give a little (like mayhe 1/8") because the steering rack has a little play. One person needs to shake all locations of wheel as another closely looks whats actuslly moving with a little play.
I'm no expert but the damage on that front panel looks like it might have something to do with why there's noise on that side I counted 18 turns btw of the outer tierod jus sayin lol
Do you guys have any videos about panel removal/repair/replacement curious and thankfully don’t need to fix and panels atm but would like a video example
My thoughts exactly. Then when he started doing the repair i noticed the inner and outer looked new, as well as the brakes and a couple other parts. The replacement outer tie rod end that was done before the new one was a greasable one but whoever did it didnt put the zerk fitting or a little bolt instead of a grease fitting leaving the hole open and exposed for crap to get into the tie rod end. Probably never greased it either so its not a surprise that it failed fairly soon. The jam nut was still shiny so good indication it wasnt that old/replaced fairly recently
I am currently having issues with new ball joints failing after a week of driving I’ve already gone thru 2 oem ball joints both have failed when I remove them they are loose with all sorts of play like if they have been in there for 10 years so I’m not sure what’s going on I put in an oreillys brand since Honda would give me 1 replacement and I also replaced my outer tie rod not sure what’s going on
Got a question woundered if u all could help me out dont trust anyone else but 1A auto anyways got to change a oxygen sensor on 97 Geo prizm lsi 1.8L the bottom before the bottom of the motor and wounderin if u have a video on how to change that if not its alrt love ur videos helped me out so much so many times have a good one
Had the same problem with lower control arm . Also replaced front hub bearing assemblies and a non working caliper. Eo much quieter with new bearings. Don't need yo 6urn stereo to 25 to drown out noise. Love your videos. Changing window regulators next.
I have a 2014 Dodge ram 1500 I drove it to work one morning power steering is fine got in it at lunch and I had no power steering turn the wheels and it was real hard any tips on what I might need to do to my rack and pinion or whatever it may be
So I put in a tie rod after watching this and other videos But still hearing loud clattering noises when going over bumps or potholes what else should I look for

The camera person did a great job on filming this video. Good lighting, great sharpness, and zoom close enough for the details.
This is really cool. I've had what I would describe as a knocking sound for the last 2 years in my car and no one could tell me what it was. Man that camera shot in the beginning is a great idea! It makes it easier for people with not much technical knowledge understand.
These videos are so clear and full of great tips that they make me feel super confident to tackle the problem myself.
A good clear explanation with demonstration on how to replace both inner and outer tie rod ends. Thank you.
Nice to see Andy uses the TLAR (that looks about right) method that most of us non-pros have been using because of the lack of specialized tools in the tool box. Thanks guys! Dave J
I like when this guy demonstrates, he's def. my favorite of the team
Andy's gotten very much better at it.
Sue is my favourite.
Frankly, though, they are all great at it. (Sue, Len and Andy).
Great, thorough tutorial. Thanks. Don't forget the locking pin on the inner tie rod. It goes thru a little hole on the nut. We saw it break off the old one when he took it off.

Dude the production value of these videos is super impressive. Oh and they're helpful too
I like your tutorial videos because not everyone has the tools for everything and you have to manage very well👍

How do you narrow it down from tie rod vs wheel bearing?
Great video just in time for me. I feel blessed to have run across this video today.
Interesting timing my mechanic told me I needed new tie rods almost two weeks ago. We're now planning to get them replaced. Definitely been hearing thumping noise.
Made it look far too enough sir you’re a legend 💪
Protip for the boot if it's too tight or hard to get on. Fold it around the edge and unfold it onto the rack before ziptying. Make sure it's seated correctly first of course.
It's good to see Matthew Lillard getting work these days
Will the zip tie for the boot last a long time?
What kind of camera did you use to record inside the wheel well?
Always nice to see another example of a clearly bad part.
Rocco from the Bronx very good video. Excellent well done great job like the way you explain things to the tea.
Bro, forget the tie rod, you totaled your truck
Maybe a stupid question but whats the difference between a tie rod and a drive shaft?
Not stupid at all. If you don’t know then you don’t know. Tie rod is what help steer your vehicle. Driveshaft is what help make the vehicle go. It’s inserted into your transmission, and from your transmission to your rear end/axles
Good job were soy nuevo en tu canal que Dios Los bendiga y tu Familia
Nice job and well explained, where did you get your Torque Wrench? And for how much?
Goto Harbor Freight for these. They are around $40 and last a long time. I've had mine for about 8 years.
I never fix totalled Fenders... But if I hear a noise in the suspension.. I always get right on it.
Could be the control arm bushings.
Wheel bearings , or stabilizer rods, probably wheel bearings
Cheap fix your self use thick grease. Oh yes replace them if it is it. Do check ball joints too.
I'd say either one of your calipers are going bad or wheel bearings. Make sure you replace both sides even if one side is bad.
I think my tire rod broke 2 days ago and you show me how to fix it
What ever happened to a book on your ride ? A manual that explains how to do ? Thats how i fix all my rides. Im self taught.
Ps if your tie rod broke you can't drive it there's no steering
Tie rods steer the wheels

Could the thumping noise also come from the cv axle where the protector is ripped and there isn't much grease in there ?
On some cars there is a locking washer that prevents the inner tie rod from coming loose. Either way, I would still use lock tite.
Very pleased with the video but what is a "JAM or JAMED NUT ".
A "jam nut or a lock nut" locks down a threaded rod- usually with a wrench.
A second nut tightened onto the first nut locking the both in place. Also goes by buddy nut or pal nut
How about Wheel Bearing issues? How do yiu find out its the hub bearing
I have that same torque wrench. Its good but i hate that it doesnt reverse. Especially since a lot of lug nuts these days are those crappy 2 piece ones that swell so it can be a PITA to get the sockets off sometimes
Why didn't you grease the shaft of the tie rod?
Completely and good explanation very informative..thanks you..
Great Video...nice and smooth. Hope all is good.
How to change chervolet spark front wheel struds.... Can you upload the video for the same
Could a inner tire rod make clunk/pop noises?
Sway bar link?
Control arms definitely make a clunking noise, especially over bumps.
I have a 02 Pontiac firebird I put my outer tie rod on exactly as you did, but when I put the tires back on & tried too drive, I noticed a humping feeling so I backed my car back in the driveway, what could be the problem Now?? SCR.
Your vids are the best. Now, if only I had a shop with a lift......
The diagnosis of this issue seems to be pretty identical to a bad hub assembly/wheel bearing. When you don't have the luxury of lifting the car - what might be a good way to tell the two issues apart?
Some inner tie rods actually have a pin you have to remove before you can take the tie rod off
Great job explaining this repair
From a stop to start clank. Sounds from my recent brake work. I had trouble but I was sure I checked things ...I have a feeling I need to also change the axle again. Am really tired of fixing myself. When I tried a professional I am not getting the help I need
The ball joint that you guys sale need to be greased?
"Torque to spec" does *not* mean you can go round each one again to make the noise again, you're now torqueing it *past* spec.
Can u show how steering rack sound when in bad shape?

Your paying the price for looking cool. Me i change the tires to correct size, tires are costly.

Andy, Great video Bro 😉. Is it safe to drive with a worn outer tie rod ball joint (up and down movement in the ball joint) and growling wheel bearing on the same side wheel until I can afford to get them replaced? Thanks, Mike
I see that your torqueing the lug nuts, but you never said what foot lbs you are torqueing too???😊
Good job buddy , it’s good information 💕🇵🇭🇺🇸
Would a bad tie rod clunk only when turning one direction, like left?
All I need is a lift in my driveway.
Great teacher. Thank you very much!
Nice one, Andy.
Thanks.
Clear and precise.
Surprised you guys didn't use an inner tie-rod removal tool or use one to torque it down with a proper torque wrench when re-installing.
Great help Oct 16, 2022 and I saw mine is torn so I'm using this video for help guide
2:42 "all you have to do is grab the inner tie rod and hold it still while someone else shakes the wheel"
I had a Ford that was making a thumping noise checked everything nothing was loose I find out later I had a broken spring on my strut when it broke you couldn't tell it made the spring shorter so when you went over bumps
Just what I needed, thanks!
you don't torque the lugnuts to 165 foot pounds for a midsize passenger car like the techs at Firestone do, when the specs call for 80 ft pounds?
You DON'T torque the wheel when they are on the ground and the vehicle is weighing on them.
You torque them down while in the air
LOL what a stupid comment!!!! You torque it down on the ground and no more then 100 foot pounds.
Grabbijg the wheel at 9 and 3 oclock can also give a little (like mayhe 1/8") because the steering rack has a little play. One person needs to shake all locations of wheel as another closely looks whats actuslly moving with a little play.

This should be idea for training video in a school!
I am sure that passenger front side impact didn't help the tie rods either. Good video.
My thoughts exactly. Then when he started doing the repair i noticed the inner and outer looked new, as well as the brakes and a couple other parts. How do you actually place mount a gopro or mini camera inside wheel well, recording suspension while driving.
I want to know as well
should u do it both side when the other is gone
Where can I get that wrench for the tires?
Torque wrench
Harbor Freight
