- Light duty trucks don't really belong in a medium duty world, so why do some manufacturers make them that way? Today, we're going to show a municipal truck from Kenworth and why it's such a great idea to have a heavy duty truck as your medium duty truck.

Having been a Ford truck guy all these years, I like the looks of the Super Duty 650s and 750s. And there's also Chevy's return to the medium duty field, with it's Silverado 4500, 5500, and 6500. I do find it interesting that the semi truck manufacturers have entered the medium duty field.
We've actually be here for a really long time. People just don't tend to notice as much. Each serves a purpose, so if you want the longest lasting truck....we have it.
Everything you say about these trucks is true. I drive a new one for Home Depot Pro with a 26 ft. box and lift gate. Back and forth from Omaha to Des Moines every day. After deliveries about 400 miles a day. It is nice knowing when you see other brands you're in the good stuff lol And I do have to roll the window down a tad to close the door, tight as a drum. Pure quality.

A crew cab set up like the freightliner m2s would be nice though that's probably a niche market. In my world as a cattle farmer a w900 is a nice thing to have but you're not going to see me take it out in the field if at all possible. Where a medium duty or light duty truck is more maneuverable. In my opinion hauling livestock can be hard on a truck.
Kenworth does not currently have a crew cab as it is very much a niche market. There are a few companies out there that will extend them as we have had a number of fire trucks come through here with 4 door cabs though. :D
That really is a nice truck you can tell it's a quality built unit. We have 3 Chevy/GMC medium duty 7500 series dump trucks and they are pretty much falling apart at least the interior has taken a beating. However the engine and power train has held up well on all of them.
When is paccar going to offer a crew cab model. Sometimes your customers need carry a crew and equipment
I will be glad when Paccar will update the cabs on the Peterbilt and Kenworth medium duty lines. I help Amerigas in the winter and the wider cabs of the International, Freightliner and Hino are really nice. After driving all of these trucks the Hino is the most uncomfortable to drive. I just think Paccar is needs to add the wider cab. I heard on of the upper management say how he likes the wider cabs of the Freightliners that my local Amerigas office has been getting. The past few new trucks have been Freightliners.
Cab structure is top notch when it comes to the Paccar products. Lin's Propane trucks has said that Paccar has plans for adding the wider cab to its medium duty lines. Another great video!
I've heard that there are some changes coming that you should be excited about. That's all I'll say about that. :D

Wayne Norbrey, Jr A lot of these manufacturers, as well as drivers, are stuck in the past for things like that. Never did understand these cramped cabs
I ran a 422 mile straight truck lift gate peddle route all southeast Ohio in a Hino.
It was a terrible ride.

Spent 30 plus years in public works plowing and spec ing . Once we went to 12 foot plows used 18 and 20K fronts to account for weight transfer during braking with full loads and plow up. Rears used 30K with lockers and G177 Tires (if I remember correctly) and on spot chains, and the highest rating on springs we could get, storm drains on the side of the road wreak havoc with springs. And Allison automatics. Hard to tell from the video but the trans control and the plow controls look to be a little to far forward and to the right to be ergonomic. .
You do have to reach a bit of the transmission, but the plow controls are really just right at the fingertips. Those are super easy and it's nicely just a fingertip control. No tough levers to move. It's all electric over hydraulic.
Thanks Josh ! I have been working for county highway dept over here in Indiana for 10 years went from International to freight shaker because of cost! I wish we could prove to them spend a little bit more up front and save in the long run. I still need to send photos of the old grain hauling days 1984 W900b and dads 84/85 K100. Also have some of dads 1974 K100 and 1978 K100
Not that I'm looking for a plow truck, I'm just wondering 2 things...1) How well is the back side of the hood reinforced to keep it from cracking where the plow lights are mounted? 2) If the plow lights are LEDs, are they heated so that snow/ice melts instead of covering them? I know many otr drivers that have installed LED headlights, not realizing that they won't melt snow/ice until they actually have to drive through it. F.Y.I. sis n I are still planning to visit you when it comes time to update our small fleet. We'll be sure to call ahead for an appointment, probably in June the way we're thinking.
KW and others should make a proper crew cab. Only thing close at this point is the M2 from Freightliner

Yes!! The plow I run is yellow and the lights reflect back on me. That plow looks too big for that truck though. Is it all wheel drive Josh??
And with those rear fenders, it makes it really hard to throw chains.
It's not all wheel drive and typically in this area, we don't get enough snow in one shot to need chains. For the most part, we're able to stay up with it :D

So let's begin on my thoughts... LOVE that a company FINALLY took into account, why NOT make it super quiet like a luxury ride. hated coming home at end of the week and having to have the tv loud just to hear it and having everyone else wondering if I think I'm at the IMAX, lol

What weight classes can a medium duty KW range ? Awesome video. I feel the same way about medium duty trucks. Both have their places...
Do you have any T440's that you can review? Trying to decide if I want to purchase one for my delivery crew.
The T440 is a great truck, but it's not one that we have on the lot typically. We have sold a number of them to the city of Akron and Summit county and they love them! !!

Looks like a good truck. Painting the back of the plow black does not work well(gets covered with snow). The Truck lite led plow lights are awesome, have them on a 2018 International 7400. KW would be my truck of choice if I ever needed to switch brands. Wish the boss would learn how to spec trucks, letting the sales people run the show does not work.
Its running the same cab structure and build as a Arabian Oilfield Kenworth 963, You won't see that in a Isuzu NPR or Fuso

I live in a city that buys the cheapest trucks. I wish the city would invest in Ken worths because they last so much longer.

Yes, because it has a greater than 33,000lb gvw, it's rated as a heavy truck.

You can get them that way, yes. It makes it a bit tougher though with the PTO unless you go with a FEPTO or REPTO which involves more $.

@@Turbo-6 These will still do 63-64 mph and when you think that most of them will be "in town" or plowing at 35-40 mph....it's right in that sweet spot for them.

I would love to see a video on transmission gear ratios, tire size, rear end ratio, sweet spots of different motors and RPM's at highway speeds. I realize that video may not interest many people but there are a lot of gear heads out there wondering how to spec a new truck with the right ratios for the sweet spot and highway speeds., This way we can do our homework before walking into a dealership. By the way thank you for all your videos and taking time to answer me
@@Turbo-6 There's actually a couple of ways to do that, and it takes some work on your own as each application is so different. Cummins has their Power Spec program which allows you to see engine torque curves and compare them with different transmissions, gear ratios, and tire sizes. Super accurate and a ton of information in it.

Threw the Automatic to hell and add a 8 LL or 10 speed
That's fine on the highways but plowing short streets and cul-de-sacs and you will want the auto, did 30 plus years of plowing
@@arthurlake3710 Each to their own I suppose. I've always preferred a good ole standard (8ll, 9 or 10) over autos. I never have the control with autos like I do with a standard (especially if you have a co worker that gets stuck in drifts, can't rock a auto truck back and forth). But that's just me.
Not sure why this is not configured with 4x4 more often as it is a huge safety item, PACCAR engine is a big Meh,

Cabs are small...yes. I have had Internationals, Freightliners and these KW's are much better cabs. Yes you have to crack the window to close the doors. The HVAC works great....unlike the HVAC in others trying to stay cold/hot with their leaky, pourous cabs. I am a Ford 1 ton truck guy but man these KW medium duties are the best. We had 5 internationals and I have 1 left. Actually, it is for sale if you know anyone that wants a used international hooklift. Cummins engines with allison 3000 series transmissions are unbeatable for our work. We are in/out of the landfill 6-10 times per truck, 5 days a week and these trucks keep on rolling. The reason I bought the KW over Peterbilt, the cab seal is underneath the door and not on the door jamb/floor. When getting in/out of truck, the driver is not stepping on the rubber seal and it doesn't wear out near as fast as others. Love the truck vids.
kenworrths arent worth it they over price and they make there trucks to expensive
The investment you make up front more than pays for itself over the life of the truck. You can buy trucks that are less expensive up front.....but you pay more in the long run.
