"Oh No" is the word that automatically I say when a foreigner/tourist is being directed to Yu Djum to try their first gudeg. Gudeg Yu Djum is on of the sweetest gudeg that you can find in Yogyakarta.😅 I recommend tourist to try 1. Gudeg Sagan 2. Gudeg Mbah Lindu 3. Gudeg Mercon They are less sweet, and make sure you mix everything in one bite. It can change your first perspective about gudeg. ☺️ Hope you try it, and I enjoy watching your video Sarah and Seunghun.
Thank you so much! We hope to try some of those other places next time we visit - someone else also mentioned mixing everything together, especially with the spicy Krecek. We'll have to try 😊

The charcoal in the Kopi Joss (Joss coffee) is there to keep the coffee warm. This type of coffee usually served in the street-side vendors called "angkringan". The idea is that you will enjoy the coffee while talking with someone for hours and the coffee would be still warm because of the charcoal
Javanese people are very proud of their "sweetness", almost every food and drink especially from central java are sweet, even regular iced tea is sweet by default

LOL 😆 ... Foods in Jogja and southern part of Central Java do taste sweet, too sweet even for Javanese from other areas. We love to put sugar, palm sugar, sweet soy sauce to anything. You seem enjoying Soto with only drizzle of calamansi juice. But people from the area will put hefty amount of kecap (sweet soy sauce) in and add sambal as well. It's more of an acquired taste. The more you try, the more you will like it.
My list of favourite foods in Indonesia: 1. Mie Aceh (Stir fry noodles from Aceh) 2. Gulai kepala kakap Medan (Fish head curry from Medan) 3. Garang asem (Spicy tamarind chicken wrapped in banana leaf from Kudus/Central Java) And a lot of other delicious food that are not well known that I can't mention one by one. We have approximately 6.000 of different food dishes, some of them are really good while some are not. I hope you can enjoy all of our delicious food 🙏😊
Thank you for visiting Jogja! Anyway, Bakpia Kukus Tugu Jogja is not the actual and original bakpia, they are more like steamed sponge cake. Not long ago, they were criticized about the misleading brand names and product. If you want to try the real bakpia, there's actually an area called Kampung Pathuk, iin Yogyakarta City. Ah, it is also a bit shame that you didn't come to the inside of Beringharjo market, they sell not only souvenirs but also local cuisines inside the market.
Thank you for the recommendations! Yes, we realized the bakpia we showed weren't the original. We luckily tried a better one later that was the more dry kind. And we loved it!
Jogja and Solo are two city with sweet dominant foods, indeed. Even we Indonesian are shocked sometimes, same foods that are not supposed to be sweet are sweet in those areas LOL

if you guys have a chance to visit Sumatra then you're going to find out how the food there is like totally different like 180 from Jogyakarta, well TLDR each island in Indonesia definitely has their own unique food characters
just one province away to east java and you'll get that kind of shock. instead of sweet-heavy foods you'd find salty spicy for the most part. roughly the same spectrum of how sumatran food would be, but obviously different spices and techniques
It's okay Sarah. Even lots of Indonesians don't like gudeg too. I can't eat gudeg without a very spicy Krecek (the softies you eat is called Krecek, it's made of cow skin). Enjoy your stay!
Welcome to Yogyakarta, glad you enjoy the trip. Just little suggestion, when you guys plan to visit certain city of Indonesia and try its local food, try to ask a guide from local or a guide from your subscriber. They will direct you to try the best current city has to offer, rather than wandering with no idea where to go, and eventually takes up most of your time =))
The sugar, we called it 'geplak'. It's just a tradisional snack made of shredded coconut and tons of sugar, LOL. while for gudeg, there are 2 kinds of gudeg, the dry one (the one that you tried) and the 'wet' one. The dry gudeg tends to sweeter than the wet one. I'm a yogyanese but I prefer the wet than the dry one. And Yu Djum is one of the sweetest gudeg I've ever tried. Lots of my friends dont like it because it's too sweet. And yes... we love soto. To be exact: clear soup soto. Since in every area of Indonesia, we have our specialty soto. For the coffe joss... ah, you come to the right direction actually. The original kopi joss is just near by that hotel.
the areas of Central Java and Jogja are especially famous for their sweet food, like gudeg, almost all food tastes sweet, inversely if you go to the area of East Java, the typical food tends to be salty
Eat gudeg with a complete menu, there are sweet and spicy together and not just once you have to eat several times it takes time until you finally enjoy it because Central Javanese cuisine has a sweet taste
Oh, you guys ate at Soto Ayam 61. This weekend, me, my sister, and my mother are going on vacation to Jogja again to see the Lunar New Year celebrations in Jogja. And we will have breakfast at Soto Ayam 61 again 😃
Most Jogja food are sweet because back in colonial era, there are a lot of sugar plantation there. So, sugar price is very low back then and i also heard that some of workers paid by sugar (at least part of their salary). But if you hate sweet food, you can visit Tirtodipuran street where there is a lot of western style caffe with still local touch. Or you can get Sate Klatak, goat skewers in south of Jogja. The most famous is Sate Klatak Pak Pong.
Thank you for the info! - we had heard a bit about the forced planting in Central Java, that explains a lot. We appreciate the recommendations, Sate Klatak sounds really tasty 😊
the squishy thing are made from cow skin, they used to be a crackers but people of Yogya put them in a chili sambal and the final products look like that.
Btw, why does the food in Jogja taste sweet? That's because when Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch, the Jogjakarta area was a sugar production area, that's why most of the food there was sweet.
Ohh that makes sense - Sarah learned a bit about the Dutch's tanam paksa in university which we heard impacted Central Java a lot. Thank you for explaining!
Gudeg Yu Djum is indeed very sweet(even it's too sweet for me). You might want to try Yu Narni or Gudeg Mercon Yu Yah in Jalan Magelang(only open at night). And Kopi Joss is an acquired taste.
I'm Indonesian that came from different tribe from those in Jogja. Even for me those Javanese dishes are all too sweet since I came from a tribe that emphasize on raw vegetables, sour sweet, and savoury menus, so Javanese tongue palette is quiet hard on me too...
in gudeg dish you'll find the rice with gudeg (long cooked jackfruit), sambal krecek (cow skin cooked with sambal), opor soup (the yellow coconut flavour soup), maybe with tempe or tahu bacem (coconut sugared tempe and toffu) , or ayam bacem (coconut sugared chicken/chicken egg), or maybe jeroan bacem/sambal (coconut sugared cow innard/ sambal), and the kopi joss i'm sorry but using espresso doesn't make the coffee taste different because the coffee itself has already have a strong taste, the one that i knew located next to Tugu station opening at night, using not too expensive coffee and using big size glass, more like americano and they add big chunks of burning charcoals, that makes the coffee taste unique
Gudeg and other side dishes which we call it completely as Gudeg usually is eaten for breakfast, not with rice but rice porridge.
