Several months ago I witnessed an elderly man fall backwards while loading a bus. Thank to his grip strength he's still alive today. He held on to that railing for his dear life. After helping him back in his feet, I shock his hand and indeed he had a powerful hand shake.
Genuinely appreciate how you teach. I've lost 25 lbs since July (I have a lot to lose) and I want you to know your content has been a large part of my finally losing weight after consistently gaining for decades.
As someone who works in healthcare (eyecare, to be specific) I see A LOT of people in their 60s-70's who cannot, and I mean CANNOT, get out of a chair without arms on the side because they do not have the strength to use their core and legs alone. They have to push a chair against a wall to really heave-ho their body weight by swinging their arms or they need to wheel a chair over to a desk or counter to use their arms to pull them up. I'll be 40 next year and after YEARS of following accounts like yours I AM FINALLY LISTENING and started strength training in March of 2023. I use the Planet Fitness machines only for now (starting with what works for me) so my grip strength may not be there yet, but I very much DO feel better now than last year. I want to be able to stand up on my own when I'm my parents' age.
I work in the emergency services and a lack of grip strength and stabilising muscle strength is definitely a major factor in falls cases, which as you point out, are a lot more dangerous than people realise. Even getting up from a fall (after a prolonged period) can be deadly in cold conditions so doing everything you can to minimise the chance of falling in the first place can always only be a good thing. Another good video 👌
This video reminds me of my grandpa that past away after he fell. He went in too a nursing home and past away a couple of months after. I didn't really understand why he died after he fell so i wanted too say thank you for explaining about how important it is too have overall strength.
I’m a 49 female and my grip strength is awful due to a frozen shoulder. I’ve finally recovered (it’s been a long road) but my upper body strength is shot. I drop things, can’t open jars or pinch ziplock bags. Recently started strength training and working my way to better strength. I’m committed to a new lifestyle so that my kids don’t have to take care of a frail old lady when I’m in my senior years.
It’s the estrogen drop. Women get frozen shoulder just around menopause. Estrogen is a steroid. It helps maintain muscle mass. I do HRT. Still lifting heavy at 71.
This is something I’ve never thought of but it really hits home. My stepfather fell while walking up the steps a few years ago, hit his head and was killed instantly. Good information.
I'm so glad you cleared this up that it's not grip strength in isolation that increases lifespan! I've noticed my grip strength is unable to keep up with my deadlift progress with dumbbells. I now do single leg RDLs and hate my life 😂
Just here to say thanks for all your videos! Working my way through them as I train through the winter in my garage. They are so helpful as motivation and a reminder of why I’m coming out into the cold most evenings after a long day at work! Would love to see what the inner circle is all about 😊
I was just talking to my husband about this! I was playing around with a stress ball and recalled how I used to work on grip strength when playing tennis.
I started lifting consistently about 6 months ago. About a month ago I realized my grip couldn't keep up with my deadlift (about 195#, which is more or less body weight) and I have strong hands for a woman.i started using lifting grips for some of my lifts and helped with the confidence factor. Great video!
You're the best J. Your attitude towards everything in life is unremarkable. Leave fitness aside but your authenticity is something I adore and enjoy.. you make weight loss more enjoyable. I am on that journey and i hope I can do it 😘😍
Yes. Love the discussion about the correlation vs causation, and how little we can know clearly about that, but how to still try to make best decisions or our health.
This is something that’s been on my mind lately and I’ve been checking you out because my friend belongs to the inner circle! Really great information, and I will be watching my videos today!
I enjoyed your explanation so much! I have recently heard a lot about grip strength and yours made the most sense. As overall strength increases so does grip strength. You cut right through all the bs with facts and simple truth! I love it!
I love your videos. I always learn something new. I’m working on improving my balance and grip strength since I don’t want to be one of the statistics now that I’m 65.
I sent you a message about this! I so needed this info. Getting to where I am lifting heavier but harder to hold on to barbell when doing RDLs. Thank you!
Jordan, thank you for breaking down the grip statements! I’m an active, strong 67 yr old and a potter as well. Nonetheless, all that hasn’t prevented developing some arthritis in one hand. Consequently, it sometimes hinders my grip some days. I’ve always taken the grip statements with a bit of a “hurumph” 😂 because I am living the truth about grip! So yeah, thanks!!!
I had an accident and hurt both my hands in 2020 and have noticed a loss of grip strength. I hope that trying to incorporate some training specifically for my hands and wrists will help me build up strength again
Literally love you! Always so helpful and informative!!! When you talk I actually listen! Really interesting video, been working on my grip strength since watching it!! Thank you!
Thank you Jordan. Videos like this are what keep me going when I feel like I’m not progressing in the gym as quickly as I want. It is ALWAYS worth it to get movement in.
So stoked to see this video. Grip strength always felt like a limiting factor in advancing my deadlifts. I just started practicing jiu jitsu (partly inspired by you!) and it’s wild how sore my hands got after the first few classes. Excited to learn about this
Wait so I can workout in the middle of the afternoon and still make progress? I had no idea. lol Thank you for all of your videos and insight. It is beyond helpful I especially enjoy the no BS approach.
I normally would not have watched this video but I have learned while following you these past few months how relevant and relatable you are and how your content really speaks to me. Thank you for showing me how these things can affect my life. You are amazing.
Love the video as usual. My concern is, I’m 38 and have carpel tunnel which is hugely affecting my grip strength . It’s scary how my hands will not work and give out. I worry about as I get older the worse it could get? I’m doing everything I can to fight against it.
Love your videos, I learn something new every time. I’m hoping you might be thinking about doing a video about caffeine and fitness? I started looking into it, and there’s a lot of conflicting info out there. Anyway, great content as always!
Thank you, thank you! Your references to the elderly really hit home because my mother is so weak, I see many of these consequences with her. Inner Circle workouts are really improving my own strength!
I really like the way you describe a topic. The correlation and causation is the most important part about a certain topic where most of the people are misguided. Thanks for the awesome video. Definitely would incorporate these exercise in my workout. 😊
Thank you for your thorough explanation of the importance of grip strength and for the reminder of how important balance training is? Will you be doing a future RUclips on balance training?
Thanks Jordan. I am fit and strong but can’t open jars. I can dead hang and lift heavy barbells no problem. For me the limiting factor is the pain of having to grip so hard on those lids. I seem to have thin skin on my hands. Nice to know I won’t die tomorrow.
I like the examples of exercises that train strength while also improving grip strength simultaneously. Also that grip strength alone doesn’t extend lifespan but rather people who have good grip strength and balance will live longer by avoiding falls and are more steady on their feet. I have an older Aunt who falls daily due to Alzheimer’s, her brain not communicating with her legs, and it’s a miracle she hasn’t broken anything except a toe so far.
I would have never thought there was a link between grip strength and longevity! Working in long term care this is extra interesting - I'll be sharing this with the occupational health team to implement with residents!
I was LITERALLY talking about this with my daughter over this weekend. With a TBI and taking control of my health this is the ONE thing I still struggle with. Thanks for posting!
Always love your videos! I have repetitive strain in both of my hands and wrists and including arthritis which for many years I did not have the greatest strength but I do have to say that since joining IC earlier this year my grip strength has tremendously improved the pain is not even close to what I have experienced in previous years. I'm thankful everyday and loving the IC workout thank you for all that you do!
Wooo! I was really looking forward for you to do a video on the subject. I just started lifting and my biggest problem is my grip strength 😢 Love the tips too!
Now do the stand from the floor test. I see it as a proxy for lower body strength but very closely tied also to low BMI. Some of us long legged types can find it hard even though we are fit.
Great points! You made me think about grip strength in new ways - particularly as a fall prevention factor. And, from what you said at the end, this was clearly better for me than it was for you! LOL
Several months ago I witnessed an elderly man fall backwards while loading a bus. Thank to his grip strength he's still alive today. He held on to that railing for his dear life. After helping him back in his feet, I shock his hand and indeed he had a powerful hand shake.
Jordan. Your whiteboard videos are top-tier RUclips. Literally better than the lecture videos I've seen at university.
Genuinely appreciate how you teach. I've lost 25 lbs since July (I have a lot to lose) and I want you to know your content has been a large part of my finally losing weight after consistently gaining for decades.

Hand on my heart, my hubby was talking about grip strength yesterday then I was recommended watching your video. Meant to be. Thank you 🙏.
I love that the dumbbell workouts that we can do on the app also helps with our grip strength.
This is something I’ve never thought of but it really hits home. My stepfather fell while walking up the steps a few years ago, hit his head and was killed instantly. Good information.
You had me at longevity.. 67 and still learning.

Thank you for always providing common sense in an often senseless community.
Yes. Love the discussion about the correlation vs causation, and how little we can know clearly about that, but how to still try to make best decisions or our health.
My grip strength has been declining. I needed this info!
I wouldn't have known I've been doing this had I not watched your video outlining this topic!
This is something that’s been on my mind lately and I’ve been checking you out because my friend belongs to the inner circle! Really great information, and I will be watching my videos today!
I've been lifting for a year. When I started deadlifting, I needed straps. Now I'm lifting much heavier and I don't need them most of the time. Yay!
I enjoyed your explanation so much! I have recently heard a lot about grip strength and yours made the most sense. As overall strength increases so does grip strength. You cut right through all the bs with facts and simple truth! I love it!
Showed this to my son, he loved it!
I love your videos. I always learn something new. I’m working on improving my balance and grip strength since I don’t want to be one of the statistics now that I’m 65.
I was just barely thinking about grip strength - this is perfect timing!! Yay! Thank you!
I sent you a message about this! I so needed this info. Getting to where I am lifting heavier but harder to hold on to barbell when doing RDLs. Thank you!
Feels good that I've already been doing some of the grip strengthening exercises with the single arm rows. Thank you for the video
The wink had me! Sent to all my friends, great video!
Great info. Most people would never think of grip strength and overall health
Jordan, thank you for breaking down the grip statements!

Excited to watch. Grip strength has always been a challenge for me!
I never thought I could watch a 22 minute video about grip strength, of all topics, and yet here I am
I was literally just talking about this. Thank you for the easy to understand explanation!
Very helpful! Just started getting back to the gym and I’m finding grip strength is a concern-which is new for me!
Really appreciate the balanced information on the importance of grip and overall strength.
Information video, thanks for the clarification on the buzz over grip strength. As a 65 year old member of the IC I can relate. 😉
This is my comment to part of the inner circle ❤
Love everything you do thanks!!
Love a good laugh with you 😂 and all your videos
Gracias
I had an accident and hurt both my hands in 2020 and have noticed a loss of grip strength. I hope that trying to incorporate some training specifically for my hands and wrists will help me build up strength again

Thank you Jordan. Videos like this are what keep me going when I feel like I’m not progressing in the gym as quickly as I want. It is ALWAYS worth it to get movement in.
Thanks for all your great content. You make things so easily relatable and not like I have to be a freaky super star to get healthier.
Such a great and informative video. Thanks for taking the time to make this. I've shared with several family members!
This came up at the perfect time for me! I was just wondering if this was something I needed to start thinking about 😊
I love how real you are!!!
Always inspired by the info you provide. You provide such great info for body, mind and soul!!! Appreciate you.
Awesome info! I’ve been working on improving my grip strength to lift heavier weights! 💪🏾
So stoked to see this video. Grip strength always felt like a limiting factor in advancing my deadlifts.
I just started practicing jiu jitsu (partly inspired by you!) and it’s wild how sore my hands got after the first few classes. Excited to learn about this
Awesome and great information. I always lack Grip strength to go up in my RDL weight.
Wait so I can workout in the middle of the afternoon and still make progress? I had no idea. lol Thank you for all of your videos and insight. It is beyond helpful I especially enjoy the no BS approach.

Very cool. Amazing, the ties to longevity, and how it connects physiologically AND socially.
Love your videos, I learn something new every time. I’m hoping you might be thinking about doing a video about caffeine and fitness? I started looking into it, and there’s a lot of conflicting info out there. Anyway, great content as always!
This is so relevant to my life ! Thank you for what you do!
Wow, this is packed with so much helpful info. Thank you for the content you consistently put out that reminds me to keep going on the journey.
I love all of your common sense information. Looking forward to this video.
Never thought about this. Makes a lot of sense though. Thanks for always putting out great content!
Thank you, thank you! Your references to the elderly really hit home because my mother is so weak, I see many of these consequences with her. Inner Circle workouts are really improving my own strength!
Thanks for all your content, all the information you provide explaining everything so clearly and easy to understand
Great as usual, Jordan! You are so great at explaining things!
Thank you. I am doing all the exercises you mentioned at the end. My email for Inner Circle is different then this one.
One I will certainly share with my son!
When I was dealing with some neurological issues my grip strength was definitely impacted. Slowly working on regaining overall strength.
I really like the way you describe a topic. The correlation and causation is the most important part about a certain topic where most of the people are misguided. Thanks for the awesome video. Definitely would incorporate these exercise in my workout. 😊
Followed you for years! Thanks for another insightful video
Thank you for your thorough explanation of the importance of grip strength and for the reminder of how important balance training is? Will you be doing a future RUclips on balance training?

I need to increase my grip bad. I have arthritis in both hands and my grip is weak. I can’t even dead hang. Loved the video!
Need to get back to weight training. Thanks for this info! 👍
This has been such an issue for me as I get older! This is great information!👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for all of the amazing content that you put out! You are an awesome human.

Great informative video Jordan! Thank you for the great instruction. Appreciate all that you do!
This was helpful! I use versa grips and wish i had better grip strength so i could go without.
