Here I change the oil in my transmission: LA125.
Here's a link to a video I made on "How to fix a Hydrostatic Transmission that slips on your John Deere.
• How to fix a Hydrostat...
Tuff Torq info oil list: tufftorq.ordertree.com/media/... Авто/Мото
After seeing this video, which was well done by the way. I needed to change the transmission fluid in my 20 year old LT166. I also was replacing the cracked fuel tank. once i removed the fuel tank, 3 bolts and the fuel line clip, the whole transmission was exposed to my surprise. The filler cap was right there. Removed filler cap and used a fluid suction tool and it worked great. refilled fluid, put tank back on. super easy. FYI to you all. 🙂
👍
EXCELLENT!! FLAWLESS!!
Thank you kindly!
Thanks, appreciate you taking the time to redo your video. Really helpful!
👍
Man would it have killed them to add a bottom drain / top fill port LOL thanks for the great video!
Engineer's............. their ears must burn every single day
I watched terrell fixes things and he said the 2 marked spots under the tranny you can drill and tap. It's not that hard, but I would just do mine as it stands. UP on a ramp so I could get to the 2 spots and drill them out and then tap them and put in the square head plugs. He said it is there for each manufacturer if they want to put in a drain plug or not. It is all up to the company that makes their mower and uses their trannys. 🙂
@@JohnSmith-uy7sv Just drilled mine today. The metal isn't very thick on one of them so won't be many threads when I cut them tomorrow. Must be careful not to over tighten. The outer surface of my case also has a fair texture to it so I decided that needed to be flattened off a bit or will need a very soft washer to seal it. EDIT: After tapping for an M8 drain plug I decide the metal was too thin, fortunately it looks like i can drill and tap for an M20 plug and it will have much more metal to form threads.
Really!!!! Last to long then
@@ColinWatters I think youtube is hiding comments back to me. I've been scrolling through the comments and as I go up and down the more show up from 7 days ago or more and nothing was there before. So, you did not go by what they recommended? How did you fill it back up with oil and what kind of oil? synthetic 10w40? I forget the name.I've seen others recommending synthetic oil. but my small yard is very little and mostly flat in south florida. a little sloped in the back 20 minutes cutting and 20 in the front all flat. nothing steep. sorry about the return.
Congratulations . Your vídeos Help me so much in Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷 .
Great video. I think I will attempt this. It’s never been done in 17 years 🫢
👍
Great video
Awesome video, thank you.
Great video!
My Toro has a nice little header tank to which you can add fluid but grrrrr no drain plug. It was such a delight spending a whole day struggling to get the transmission off the mower. The fluid came out looking like coffee :-(
Just did seals on the LA110.
Check the axle washers closest to the transmission the spacers actually pressed the inside of those washers into the seals cutting them to shreds.
Put thicker tsc 3/4" washers on to fix it.
If you don't care about the looks of the mower you can remove the seat spring bolts and lift up, remove gas tank and you have access to the top of the transmission, it just gives you fender flares. 😂
Thanks for the video!
👍
Great instruction. Just did this on a D110. Took a bit getting lined up when putting back together but everything works as it should. Thanks again.
Glad it helped
How many hours did you have on the tractor? Did it have issues, or was this a pm ?
@@miked5331 Not sure of the hours but it's an 8 year old lawnmower. Old fluid did need to be changed.
@@scott9068 Thanks for your response! My d110 is about 7 years old. I guess it's better to change it before issues arise.
@@miked5331 Over 200hrs

Good information video, I like your delivery. Yes I will subscribe
Awesome, thank you!
Outstanding Video Sir 😇👌👍I use 15w40 synthetic oil ( T-6 ) Rotella. 👍👌😇 I have two drain plugs made on the plates from a machinist who rebuilt them ( resurface the two pistons rotating plates and all the bushing at 300 hrs ). Cheers 🍻🍻
👍
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic 😇🍻
my tranny is the K58 and about 330 hours. Do you think it's time I drilled out those 2 spots under the trany, drill and tap them. No way I'm doing all of this when it's easier to drill and then tap and you can pour gas in the top plug to clean it out. But I know, you probably can't get to the magnet on the top cap. That is just soooooooooo much work. 🥰
@@JohnSmith-uy7sv. It all depends how long you keep the mower.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Until it disintegrates. 🤔🤔🤨🤨🤪🤪 I don't have the money to buy another used one. If the tranny goes, I can always buy another tranny for around $1,000
Thank you. This is easier to follow. And I need to make a list of the order... unless, you want to post a few bullets off the top of your head!
I have a JD LT133 do you think this LA125 is similar? Mower purchased in 1997 and never replaced my oil. It is slipping a little on uphill pulls. Could be a loose belt but needs oil replacement for sure.
Remove / install is a bit tricky. Watch this video. I would install the forward/reverse rod on the transmission first and then lower the tractor down. You can start watching it at 14mins in.
m.ruclips.net/video/3D_vtMg-Zxg/видео.html
If your transmission is slipping or slowing down I’d replace the filter.
Nice job, where are you located?
Nova Scotia, Canada
will any 5w50 work? im not sure about anything to do with transmissions and tuff torq branded oil is way to expensive
Has to be synthetic. 10w-30 works too.
Bravo man. TY. Putting dogs on . Got beers in the fridge frosted Pilsner. Now get over here and do mine. I will assist.
Serious question…how many hours on your first chance of fluid.?
I have 480 hours on mine (k46 locking diff). 13 years old. Should I change it or leave it alone?
I have one here with over 500 hours. The oil was in good condition, no metal flakes attached to the magnet.
It all depends on how the tractor was heavily used. The manufacture says change your oil every 200 hours.
You don’t have to get that technical with the fluid level 30 millimeters off in either direction doesn’t even matter
Great video!! What are the initial driving symtoms before the transmission pulley fails? I have over 200hrs on my JD130 lawn mower. I just replaced the main drive belt. I have noticed there is less and less power while going forward or in reverse. When I raise my foot off the gas pedal it seems to regain some power but not much it then gets slower and slower. Would the transmission pulley be a likely culprit?
Does it work better at 1/2 throttle? If so I suspect the filter is starting to plug up in the transmission or it’s low in oil. Any leaks?
The bottom pan needs to come off. Watch this video on how the remove the pan. Just replace the filter. Add silicone on both surface when putting it back together.
m.ruclips.net/video/3D_vtMg-Zxg/видео.html&pp=ygUeUmVidXVsZCB0cmFubWlzc2lvbiBqb2huIGRlZXJl
Check the spline in the pulley.
Although im not mechanically minded, I'm not afraid of diving into these kinds of issues...diagonosing these issues is my problem
Thanks for the video, I'm doing my first one today. Would you suggest first to change the fluild in it first or just get another rear end? I have a JD D130, new belt, and it starts to slips after it warms up. I've taken it out, now I'm at the point where I should change the fluid or change the rear end completely. What's your suggestion?
Add 15w-40 or 15w-50 oil. If that don’t work maybe start looking for a used tractor “in bad shape” with a good transmission.
Hello sir, I when out and found some 20w/50 oil, is this too heavy?@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
@@ronniewortham3260Perfect. As long you don’t use the mower in the winter time.
Great! Thanks!@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
Sorry I'm so long getting back with you. I see what you mean, the 20w/50 oil is too heavy. It studders a lot but goes but if it's cold now,it won't move. So I'm gonna get the oil you suggested and put it in next week. Thanks, keep the videos coming, I'm learning alot.@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
Honest question. Has anyone just made a drain hole on the bottom? Tap and plug it? Damn, that’s a lot of work to change out oil on that gearbox.
Yes. Watch this video.
m.ruclips.net/video/1ikGq2k4iJI/видео.html
Only takes me 1hr to do. First you get good. Then you get fast. Lol
Thanks!!! 🙏
On a LA145 would this fluid bad cause SLOW GO uphills
10-25% of the time changing the oil and cleaning the filter does work. (10w-30).

I’d use 600-1000-1500 grit sandpaper
Is this the same procedure that you would use for a John Deere L1 11 lawn tractor?
No. Different The L111 drain plug is at the bottom of the transmission. The fill cap is near the top, front side.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic thank you
What is the black screw on type cap that's right above the drain cap with the magnet u used? Does that cap come off? Looks like it is a full cap
Vent cap. If it pops off, u can use a bit of silicone glue it back on.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic. Will 20w50 full synthetic vtwin motorcycle be ok to use ?
@@tearnyscribner9146 Don't know, I never used motorcycle oil before.
OR..........you could have put the rear tires up on a ramp or stand the tractor up on it's back wheels or whatever and then drilled out those 2 circle marks to drill and tap and put a plug in it when your done drain the oil that way. But then its a tight fit for the funnel to fill it back up. Do the drain plug. Then you don't have to do that all over again in another 300 hours or so. How many hours were on that change??? Thanks.
Can’t remember the hours on the trans. It takes me less than 1hr to this on a tractor.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic HOW!!! UGH!!! There is no way to do all of that in 1 hour. Unless you have a pit crew like at a race.😊 Said Elizabeth Warren. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol. I do about 10 a year. And yes, under 1 hr.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic You can remove the transmission, take it apart, drill and tap the 2 holes, put it back together and mount it back in the frame in 1 hour???? I was born at night......but...not last night. 🤪
@@JohnSmith-uy7sv. No drilling. Just take it off the mower, change the oil and installing it back on the mower.
Do you think Lucas oil heavy duty stabilizer would work well?
Can’t say. I never used it.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
What about sae 50? It was all I could find.
@@stephendevine2455. OEM is 10w30. I used 5W-50 and 10w-40 before.
Thank you for the great video, I have a Scotts lawn mower, pretty much it is John Deer, I was wondering if a Castrol 5w-40 edge motor oil would work, I am having a hard time finding Casrtor edge 5w-50 oil, thanks
👍. 5w-40 will work just fine.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Thanks to you I was able to rebuild my Scotts lawn mower transmission, it is now running like a champ, before that, I had no clue what to do. You are a great resource keep up the good work, thank you again 👍
@@transformer889 I'm glad it helped. 👍
I think I’m going to try and just vacuum the oil out of mine lol, wonder how well that would work?
Pretty hard to pop off the oil cap with the trans still in the tractor. How are you going to check the oil level?
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic lol, haven’t even looked at mine, after watching this video I seen how hard of a job it looks to me to do it the right way. I do know where there’s a will, there’s a way, I helped a friend change the fuel pump/sending unit out of the gas tank in his wife’s car once, instead of dropping the fuel tank, we pulled the carpet up from the floorboard in the back seat above the fuel tank, cut a big hole in the floor pan and changed the pump lol. I doubt she ever knew there was a repair underneath the carpet!
@@shanek6582 Right on. It’s not that hard. Just take you time. I can do this in 1.3hrs but my first time took 4. Lol.
@@shanek6582 Is that why she died of carbon monoxide poisoning and drove her car off of a cliff???🙄🙄🙄🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic put the exact amount they call for... 2.4-2.6 liters or 2.5 in the middle. ruclips.net/video/1ikGq2k4iJI/видео.html This guy shows about drilling and taping the 2 marked circles in the bottom of the tranny case. at 11:50 in that video link he explains it all and why.
Where is the filter located?
Have the remove the bottom pan. m.ruclips.net/video/3D_vtMg-Zxg/видео.html&pp=ygUoUmVib3V1a3Qgc2xpcHBpbmcgdHJhbm1pc3Npa24gam9obiBkZWVyZQ%3D%3D
The filter should also be replaced.
Is john deere hygard good oil for these?
Yes. Hy-Gard high Viscosity
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic perfect, i see you said 10w30 is also safe correct? I was looking to get a gallon of pennzoil platinum as its the most affordable
@@psd28 That will work just fine...
I used the hy-hard and mine makes noise like belt slippage when having a load like up hill so I have to let off pedal for it to “catch up with speed “ then I can go full speed. It didn’t do that before.
@@davidmorgan8612. That’s weird.
I thought LA125 has High Torq T40 transmission...it takes 10w30 oil....
10w30 works too.
What made you choose the 5w-50?
Tuff Torq web site. They usual come with 10w-30.
Ok. Thanks
Dear week end I changed the filter and oil which wasn't so bad level wasn't low and didn't have a burnt smell after 704 hours. So after I changed the oil n filter let it set over nite for silicon to set put it together taday n tried it out not much difference an still has trouble going up hill any other suggestions. An I didn't pull the pump out only drained oil n changed filter. Ray stein
Watch the video below. 600 grit sandpaper works better. It’s allot of work. You could look around for a used transmission or a cheap used John Deere tractor that need work.
m.ruclips.net/video/3D_vtMg-Zxg/видео.html
Why can't they just give us proper drain plugs?
👍
turn off the computer generated noise!
Music? I'll lower it down on the next video. Thx..
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic blah, that's not music, it's computer generated noise. it's your video and you can do it the way you want of course, I'm just making a suggestion as a viewer, but when you're doing a demonstration or an instructional video, any audio or video effects you add that have nothing to do with the demonstration, it only serves as a distraction to the viewer. it's an attention divider. Do you want the viewer to focus on your demonstration, or listen to music? trying to do both at the same time diminishes both. I know the TV commercials, TV shows, and movies do it, but you're not doing a commercial or entertainment video. You want your viewer to think and learn what you're showing them. Playing music just makes that more difficult and adds nothing to the demonstration.
