John Deere used to have a reputation. Not anymore.
Best paint job for the mower deck- Get it POWDER COATED! That’s tougher than any industrial paint!😊
I know that you’re right, unfortunately, sometimes doesn’t make sense to invest any money into machines that are this old and rough. I just put her away on them and keep them running by doing the bare minimum. In my opinion, that’s all a John Deere deserves.
I’m sorry JD has sold junk and even plastic trans
I have a lot of customers who hate JD now
Top of the line is green, no true at all
It’s about turning a profit, but for the longevity of the brand it also has to be about the customers lifetime experience with the machine. You have to make a robust unit that is easily maintained. JD’s “right to repair” problems didn’t help them either. This is why I support orange. 🙌 thanks for tuning in!
Good Job !!!!
On my John Deere La120 I did the following
Pull the deck
Jack up the back just enough to get the tire off
Add extra jack stands in the back to be safe
Remove the left rear tire to give more access
Now you can get at that cap
Pop the cap off with a long thin flat head screw driver
Use a syphon to suck out the fluid
You might have to wiggle it around to get down deep
I got about 2 quarts out
Now you have your choice of what to refill it with
A- same crap from John Deere
B- 5W-50 Full synthetic oil
C- 15W- 50Full synthetic oil - I don't run it in the winter so 15W-50 is fine
C- Amsoil has a fully synthetic Hydrostatic fluid
I think B or C is the cheaper choice
Doing it this way makes it easy to change every season or every 200 hours.
Some people install a drain plug in the bottom
I didn't
Even if you can get all the fluid out just replace exactly what you took out and run it for a month and repeat the process
Like I said if you fish the hose around you can get it pretty deep
Also changing the drive belt AKA the transmission belt and the two plastic idler pulleys in the center is very important
Because a loose or worn belt or pulleys that are failing have a dircet impact on the transmission.
Nothing beats Yankee ingenuity
Nothing.
Wow, good on ya for getting that done without fully removing the HST. This job is a pain! Thanks for the in depth comment Angus! 🤩
@@KillingItCountry welcome !
Only in a free country where free thoughts can be shared with free speech can things like this be accomplished.
Also if you are young and nimble you might be able to just contort yourself in there without removing anything
I am not young and nimble.
Do you know tuff torq makes a kit to install dain plugs, and the bottom case cover is already milled out where to drill and tap the holes.
Where’s the fun in that?? 🤪 that’s great information - I did not know that!
I heard they stopped selling it
Nice video. Only issue would be the John Deere 100 Series tractors don't have a K46 transmission in them, it's a T40. You have to step up to a 200 or 300 series to get the heavier duty K46. This information is straight off their web site.
I’m still finding lots of online resources pointing to K46 as being the hydrostatic transmission in my LA140 and my L120. It doesn’t really matter. K46 and T40 are basically the same with only approximately 10% difference in torque. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks it's fun to see how real people fix things always learn
God Bless All
PaK
Thanks Peter! You win the “Best Comment Of The Week” award!! 🥇
Just to be nosey, what caused the "hum" at 16:50 in the video? Sped up it sounded like an old vacuum cleaner, so it was definitely a lower spped, low frequency sound.
Good catch Michael but I honestly have no idea what made that sound!!
How many hours on that oil? Nobody ever seems to mention the hours seems relevant.
Both of my riding lawnmowers came to me used. I’m assuming the oil had never been changed at this point. I can’t remember exactly how many hours were on the machine, but I believe it was somewhere around 300.
@@KillingItCountry I changed the oil on my old tractor with 237 hours and judging from the condition of it when I got it used it was most likely never changed. Black and shiny not good looking. I'm thinking my new mower that's actually new I'll do it at 25 hours then again at 50 then 100 if I ever put that many hours in it. Wondering if it'll actually make a difference or if it's just a waist of time and it'll self delete regardless. Every video on the subject the transmission is slipping or not going fast so it's at a point your on borrowed time if it works better nobody does it to prevent issues in the future.
It has to help. That shine in your oil is contaminants! Good for you for the preventative maintenance!
Good video....just 3 comments. 1) best to clean transmission before opening it up. 2) I would remove the rear wheels and liberally lube to prevent rusting to axle 3) FWIW I'd go ahead and get drain plugs from Tuff Torq. That way you can get a better oil drain. I prefer to do as much as I can as preventative maintenance. For high hour tractors it's a good time to replace belts with it all apart. Thanks for sharing.
You’re not wrong. My machines are pretty grizzly and beat-up so I’m looking to make them last - but not going to get carried away. When I did this service to my L120, I tried to remove a rear wheel and it was already seized … so I left it alone. Thanks for the great comment Martin!
Get a suction motor or hand pump
Will never be as effective as draining upside down.
@@KillingItCountry I believe you
Better off getting a old MTD or ayp mower 😊
Very nice. Hugh help. You method of removing fan, different from another video showing retaining bolt removal.
The bolt on mine was already loose - so I went that way. Totally loved your effort.
I am ready to drain tank. Getting it disassembled was quite doable. And my fins were SO FNG BAD. UGLY in there.
I am doing the belt as well. So appreciated. 4.875 stars. 5 Stars for under deck lighting as commented by others.
Thanks!!! Best of luck on your oil change! 🤞
Yea no pressure washing after you change rhe oil, do that before and honestly i wouldn't pressure wash it, use garden hose pressure and a degreaser instead and do it before the drain
Awesome tip! Thanks for watching!!
My Scotts L2048 (L120) just starting with losing drive power after about 15 minutes of cutting. I'm going to try it! Thanks for posting this! Your filming was great and gave me the necessary information I need on breaking down the axel. Did you paint that mower deck yet!?😆
I totally did paint the mower deck!!!! Thanks for your comment!!
So the best thing to do when you buy a k46 transmission or mower with that one on it is to first take out the transmission 10w30 motor oil when it's still brand new and put in the 20w50 synthetic hydrostatic zero turn transmission fluid
I did a fare bit of my own research as well when I decided on oil type and grade. I'm sure that simply changing the oil annually will make the transmission last longer than the rest of the tractor.
@@KillingItCountry yeah it should make it last longer
That sprung washer is necessary
Need a new seat ,LOL looks like mine on my mower typ John deere seat after awhile , GREAT VIDEO . Everyone should watch very good info .
Hahaha. My arse still fits on it so I’m good to go 😂 thanks for the great compliment!
In "Free Mode" maybe want to try manually turning the wheels to rotate the tranny gearings to move fluid into possible trapped air pockets or fluid level will be lower than expected later on...fluid will not be "topped off" properly.
I did spin it off-camera a few times. Not sure it was adequate though because the level didn’t drop.
Need to take that seat and have it recovered with saddle leather! Then it would match your hat better!😊
Now that would be sweet!
so my 130 isn't movin rite..the longer runs worse it gets..whines loudly..wont pull banks anymore.
do u think this wld help?
I believe that as your HST gets hot, you’re loosing power because the oil thins-out and leaks back through the pump. I have read that some have been able to improve performance and extend the life of their HST with an oil change. In order to maximize cooling, it is vitally important that you run the machine at full RPM’s to make the most of the belt-driven cooling fan above the HST and clean any debris off the top of the HST while you have it out. All the best, feel free to follow up with additional comments if I can help further.
got a 2021 JD and I'm wondering if the paint will start flaking in about 12 moths... when you talk to the dealer about it they seem surprised , as if I'm making it up.
They look so good when they’re new. I don’t know for sure but I’d bet they haven’t changed their paint process to address this issue. You may be back for tips on how to refresh your mower deck in a few years 😊. Until then, enjoy your new mower and thanks for the comment Christo!
Ahhhh!!!! So many views!!!! We love you!
I was just thinking about RR today!! We love you too ❤️
A leever?
Remove both wheels 1st makes Job a lot easier, use Jack to balance transmission on
You’re absolutely right Bruce!! Except that the wheels were both seized on the axles and I didn’t want to get into it. This worked fine! Thanks for watching!
Great video Sir, 😉👍🍻
Great video, you do good work your definitely talented. Thanks,
I will be tackling this job soon enough
Thank you sir! Best of luck on your oil change!!
I’m trying to find out how much oil I should add after draining. My machine is a D130. If you have any info on this please send it to me thanks again
Ummm… so was that poor seat every replaced….🤣
Oooo … I got some bad news for ya 😂
I used 1/3 quart 10W30 conventional, 1/2 quart 5W40 synthetic, and 1/2 quart of SAE40 non detergent compressor oil on mine. Those were the open bottles I had on my shelf that I wanted to use up, and had been drinking beer so couldn't safely drive to the store! Seems to work great!
I think you and I could be best friends 😂
Thank you so much for doing this video! Adding the lighting during the disassembly was very helpful. I just finished replacing my drive/transmission belt and noticed the transmission was caked in dirt. Like 3/16" thick. Pretty sure from the presence of oil. I don't know if I have a leak or maybe oil vented out thru the vent. When I was replacing the drive/transmission belt I did find a broken V pulley. So I replaced both pulleys. I plan on pulling the transmission, cleaning it and changing the fluid. I haven't noticed any issues with the transmission when using the mower. My tractor is a John Deere L111 with 390 hours on it. Bought new in 2006. Thanks again Killing it Country. 🤠
Great idea to pull the unit out and clean it up. If you have access to a pressure washer - that’s a great way to remove the buildup. It really should be clean to shed heat during operation - it’s like a big heat-sink. Thanks for watching!!
Can't you also use the J.D. J20-C Hydraulic Transmission Fluid ?.
J20-C is a bit more viscous than the J20-D , correct ??
Honestly I never ever looked at using a John Deere specific oil to replace the hydrostatic transmission fluid. My machines are running great and pulling hills like they never have since I have owned them. 🤞
@@KillingItCountry Sounds good , I've heard that the 10-30 factory oil is junk & 5W-50 is awesome for heat !! I used Mobil Fluid 424 In Mine , and putting it back together as we speak !! Mine only held about 1 1/3 quarts ... do you remember what yours held after a full drain ??
Thanks !! 😎
Unfortunately I don’t. I filled it up until it was full and then I spun the wheels forward and reverse in order to circulate the fluid around the hydrostatic transmission and then I topped it up maybe a little bit and then I was off to the races!! Good luck!
@@KillingItCountry Mighty Good .... Thanks , & Be Safe !! 👍🏻
@@KillingItCountry
easier to remove deck first i take it?
Oh yes!!! Don’t try this with the mower deck installed. Good luck Sim!!
@@KillingItCountry
thank u sir 🤞🤞
@@KillingItCountry
so it's apart & draining..wld u also replace drive belt while apart? I'm goin after materials in morn..thnx again!
@@sim7409 check the belt over. Bend it back and forth ..... check for any cracking and general wear and tear ..... depending on how difficult this job was for you .... you may want to just spend the cash and do the belt now instead of two years from now ..... ya know!? So awesome you’re doing it!!! Let me know how it goes!!
Are you gonna do the oil in the L1 20
Hi Colton, hope you’re enjoying your machine!! I will do an oil change, just not sure it will happen this fall. Thanks for commenting!
I must missed it, but you did put the breather cap back together, didnt’t ya?
I’m doing a restore on my 2004 L120 this week. Strip & powder coat the fender pan & mower deck, new spindles & bearings, and do the transmission. So I’ve been looking at lots of videos the last few days and this has got to be the easiest transmission service so far.
I did get the breather cap reinstalled but I don’t think I got it on camera unfortunately. I have to do our L120 next. It’s in terrible condition! Thanks for commenting and good luck with your machine restoration!
You don't have to take it all the way out just unscrew the green body part of it and suck it out with the shop vac its easier to do
It’s not wrong if it works for you!! 👍
How much oil get in ? And how do you now when its full? You fill to the cap?
Hello Darko! I did fill mine until it was full. I am unsure if this was the correct course of action but I haven’t had any problems!
So how much oil did it take?
Hi Mark - 2.2L does the trick!
I’m sorry, you have it correct!
Don’t be sorry!! I have no idea what I’m doing half the time 😊
Nice job .
Thank you!!
Fan goes on b4 pulley
Are you doing a service to your machine too?
That's how mine was also , the fan is under the pulley so it will run cooler !! 😉👍🏻
I read on that transmission website when they sell those new they're filled with 10w30 motor oil not transmission fluid I sucked mine out and put the right fluid in no motor oil.
It's the same transaxle transmission as what's on my L110 its supposed to have 20w50 synthetic hydrostatic zero turn transmission fluid in it. I guess you could have used 10w30 motor oil what the company uses when they sell those new I know they do that hoping they'll break on the people and that's how john deere keeps making money
That's weird that John Deere would put the wrong oil in them at the factory.
@@KillingItCountry I know i think they do knowing it wont last long for the person then they'll either have to spend more money getting it fix which they'll only replace the transaxle transmission or the person would have to buy another mower
