Underrated biblical epic
Magnificent film, with Max Von Sydow offering my favourite portrayal of Jesus: warm and human, yet other-worldly. Superb supporting cast, including Jose Ferrer, Charlton Heston, Telly Savalas, and David McCallum, among others. The US locations and cinematography are incredible! A labour of love from George Stevens. RIP to all who are no longer with us!

George Stevens brushed off criticism of the “guest star cameos” by saying that he hoped future generations would enjoy the whole film (and its message). He added that future moviegoers wouldn’t even care who these stars were!

Does it? I don't think the hair of this actor matches the idea of the classic Jesus' hair. And the actor does not appear to be 30 years old, he seems to be much older than Jesus.

EXCELLENT what I think is everyone in this film they acted there booties off!!!!! This was one hell of a film one of my favorites of all time and I will keep watching as long as I can and wonderful for you to watch with your family!!! I've been watching this since I was a child. Wonderfully done! You should have received an Oscar but of course just a subject matter alone some idiot must have had a problem I think this is so much better then Mel Gibsons.

A literal retelling of the life of Christ with Swedish actor Max von Sydow in the lead. Swedish Jesus seems spaced-out. Maybe a man without sin has to be this way. The cast is a Who's Who in Hollywood, and the fun is in picking out famous faces. Charlton Heston is John the Baptist. John Wayne is the Roman soldier at the cross. "Truly, this man was the Son of God." The film ended the era of big Bible flicks.
So ain't no rain up in that part of the world but a few precious moments during the year, but here we get the HUUUUUUUGE thunder. I guess whatever tells the story in the Deux Ex Machina-est tone, eh?

I saw the movie today and I call it absolutely amazing and pretty epic. I don't care if Max Von Sydow is an Atheist or agnostic but I still think Jim Caviezel plays Jesus perfectly. George made a great movie and critics tempt it and they should be ashamed. I like this movie but I'll never watch it again not because it has nothing to do with my love for Christ and God but I just don't have Common with Max's performance.

Among US Directors George Stevens Sr is regarded as one of the 10 Best Movie Director with a body of work that is stunning: A Place In The Sun, Shane, The More The Merrier, Giant, I Remember Mama, etc. Mr. Stevens was regarded with great respect in Hollywood, and Stevens undertook this project. Brilliant film, and a great supporting cast. I felt Max Von Sydow was too passive as Jesus Christ. The supporting cast is good. Elizabeth Taylor turned down the chance to play Mary Magdalene.

It would have been even better if they called him Yahshuah or Isa in Subtitles and noted that the real people of scripture was Melaninated (People of Hue)... Nevertheless, some of the actors did speak some facts and some truths. Considering most of the inconsistencies and contradictions based in the Bible. I must admit, it is definitely the best movie ever made about the life of the Prophet and Messenger who the world "calls" Jesus (The Christ).... I just wish they was more honest and factual with the script.... However, it's still a classic to be studied for the righteous and spiritual who is seeking divine truth.....

I understand why they traded Clevland rather than let him walk next year, But the Risner Holiday is over. The fans got what they wanted. Now our running game clearly regressed and now the pass defense is going to drop off. At least we have mobility at QB but he is nowhere near as accurate as Cousins. Or even Hall. .

They put in twenty million dollars - in 1965 that’s a lot of money. I’m guessing tickets were cheap then and which is why they received 15 million at the box. I’m sure a greater expert will say a better answer.
It could run for 40 years. Yeah it fell short of that.
Not 40, but in the ealry 80s tis was my favorte film (along with Superman), so about 17 years n it was still popular

When Jesus Christ says will never thirst to the crowd those who believe in him , he mean´s when flesh is dead and makes it to Heaven because he will have trays of food & pint of drink free on the tray as people get their trays as they sit with their relatives only , in Heaven and at times with him & the Apostles . And his hair is shoulder length and the robes tie at the top up there and very light metal vest under it & in Heaven will feel lighter even with all that on .

The brief cameo roles made it laughable, it was like " oh look there's Phil silvers playing Noah" Abbot and Costello playing a couple of slaves"
Absolutely ridiculous, the film itself is beautifully filmed, the sets and lighting are superb, the story is a bit long winded, its mainly let down by the actor's, I would say casting, but these actors did choose to do it in the hope that they'd be in a classic film, big big bucks for small parts

Miss the point! This is only bad try to tell the Greatest story ever. For example, Maria Magdalena wasn't adulteress, The Jesus expell seven deamons from her. It was the other woman. The best movie about Jesus Christ is 'Tale of Christ - Ben Hur'. No man who can play Jesus on screen.

That hair though. I wish they would stick to what it says in the Bible. Bit ridiculous to have Peter say "What's YOUR name?" As if everyone didn't know it was Jesus. I doubt they would be talking to him like a school boy like Beaver on Leave it to Beaver, or like Opie Taylor from Andy Griffith. Gee paw! I would imagine they would be beholding his majesty. You would be able to feel his presence, and there would be a sense of awe, respect, wonder, and peace. The most accurate film that portrays the Jesus I know is The Gospel of John.

Rest in peace Max von Sydow. I have mixed feelings about this film. It does have its moments and it has nice cinematography. The incessant cameos become distracting. The script could have been better. It's sort of like watching a moving holy card, which has its good points and its not so good points. I am a bigger fan of Franco Zeffirelli's JESUS OF NAZARETH, Pier Paolo Passolini's THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW, Philip Saville's THE GOSPEL OF JOHN, and Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.

This should have been one of the great classic films but for me it was ruined by Stevens including well known actors in "cameo" roles, it totally destroys the gravitas of the story. Also Newman including excerpts from Handel and Verdi was IMO misjudged. A seriously flawed masterpiece.
