  • One of the great spectacle moments in golden age cinema.
    Max Von Sydow raises the bar on miracles in George Stevens take on Christ's ministry and crucifixion.
    Though lifted from his score for THE ROBE, Alfred Newman's hauntingly powerful music perfectly portrays the complex mix of shock and reverence that defines the scene.

    Ever since I was a little girl, this scene struck me powerfully. When I grew old enough to understand it better, it made me cry every time- to have it so silent, so dramatic, then to slowly bring in the Hallelujah Chorus (what has long been my favorite Easter song) leaves such an impact, it leaves me shaken- fantastic directing and use of Händel's Messiah - it's just...perfection. It has become tradition for me to watch this scene especially for Easter. Thank you for posting this and sharing! :)

    Some comments on the music.The early part of the score by Alfred Newman, one of my favorites, was lifted almost note for note from one of Newman's other scores, "The Robe." The music which accompanied scenes of Van Heflin, Sal Mineo and Gary Raymond was the music used when Victor Mature gazed on Jesus as He died. Also, Newman vehemently objected to the use of Handel's "Messiah," but George Stevens insisted on using it.

    • @stephenbastasch7893
      @stephenbastasch7893 2 года назад

      Yes, the first part is from The Robe; the second part is Newman's own new contribution of his "Hallelujah", also found on the original soundtrack album track, "The Great Journey"; the final part of course is the Handel.

This is the best cinematic portrayal of Jesus' fame spreading and shows how Jesus built up a crowd especially after raising Lazarus. Definitely a powerful scene to end the first half of the movie with. This is perhaps one of the most reverent portrayals of Jesus out there and one of the few that gives Jesus short hair.

    Saw this when I was a kid in its Cinerama premier, found it intriguing.
    For clarification re: the soundtrack in this scene:
    George Stevens insisted that Alfred Newman re-use his crucifixion music from The Robe for the build-up to Lazarus exiting the tomb. After that point, Newman had written a glorious "Hallelujah" to finish the scene and lead to the intermission. However, Stevens then insisted that Newman's Hallelujah be replaced completely with Handel's Messiah.
    Later on, Stevens then decided to re-instate PART of Newman's Hallelujah. It is the "filling" in the musical sandwich between The Robe music and the Handel chorus.
    Newman's Hallelujah is identical to a theme that he wrote that appears in the first part of the film, titled on the original vinyl soundtrack album as The Great Journey. This has some resemblance to Franz Waxman's main theme for Demetrius and the Gladiators, but it is actually quite original and idenpendent.
    You can listen to Newman's new, original Hallelujah written specifically for this film on the two-disc soundtrack album, where it correctly appears for the Lazarus scene - and, in a "quieter" rendition for Jesus's own resurrection scene. Both versions are simply grand. It is a pity that Stevens hired the venerable Newman but then so callously trimmed down his powerful original film score.
