    Kevin Schwantz 1991 lap record at Assen stood for a decade and was never bested. A track reconfigure set the lap time in stone. Incredible!

      @@gman3725 indeed. Two very different formats and the 500s where incredibly difficult to ride at the limit compared to the computer controlled motogp bikes, not that I'm criticising the riders of today but a rider can come from Moto3 to MotoGP and within two seasons they can get a top 6th result.. That would never have happened to a 125 rider going to 500GP..
      Bigger balls required to be a 500GP winner than motogp plus Id rather be called a 500gp legend than a MotoGP one.. If only i had the balls🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🏁🏁🏁🏁

    Great to see footage of Assen from the early 90's. I live 45 minutes from Assen and in the late 80's and early 90's I drove there frequentely. Those days the track was public road when there were no races. In 1992 they closed it for traffic because too many accidents happen during these illegal track days.

A great race with some very competitive and talented riders and equally, if not more so... commentators - Nick Harris - just a legend on the mic - the pleasure is all ours! I've seen those guys race too at Road America (4mile road course in beautiful Wisconsin). I think I had gotten Chandler's autograph perhaps. • @jayb293
      @jayb293 3 года назад +1

      nothing in comparison to motoGP bikes. properly smoked from Smoke City. FYI a 500cc gets out of breath very easy. it pounds your ass until 250kmh. after that, it's like the bike struggles to speed up. very slow to go to 300kmh. unlike a MotoGP 4T which accelerates constently up to the rev limiter. with almost 300hp now and around 230hp back in 2002. which is about 20hp more than a 500 and doesn't get out of breath.
      better engine ridability too. rpm range is way bigger on a 4T. more exploitable by the rider. faster and less dangerous. this the right evolution. 2T have shit lifetime too. easy to seize up.
      yes they were beautiful manly bikes but way too dangerous and stupid thinking about it now.

      Most, if not all, new circuits were designed by the same guy, Hermann Tilke, whose a car racer. When Mick Doohan first rode at Sepang, he complained that, "Whoever designed this place has no idea about motorcycle racing." The new tracks are designed to accommodate the abomination shamelessly called "Grand Prix" -- Formula 1, like what you mentioned.

      Scary and short gravel traps and exposed solid track walls. Safety hadn't matured yet, made racing more on the edge and let's face it, the crowd eats that up. I'm glad tracks are a lot more safe these days, crashing is part of racing, but surviving to race another day should be as well.

      Yes he was. This must be a commentary in retrospect for him. As for Nick I know that he was there live. Gavin was born in 78, meaning that he was 14 in 1992.

    These 500's were such great race bikes, not the boring 4 strokes we have now, and then the they went and ruined the Assen track with the layout change, so sad. Note: No end of electronic aids would have helped Lawson and Schwantz at the 17 minute mark.

    25 years later all Spanish domination in motogp. Lol Lawson had the pace to win the first one for cagiva. Bad luck poor Kevin another bump. Doohan should won this championship nightmare accident.

    The race that almost cost Doohan´s careeer ... Dr Claudio Costa saved his leg , and carreer .

    • @armandojuan64
      @armandojuan64 3 года назад

      The wound wasn't out of the ordinary , the treatment was horrible , causing the blood supply to the leg to stop so in a couple of hours the leg started to rot , Dr Costa connected both legs together so the good one could feed blood to the bad one .

    Indeed, chunder27, exactly what I think every time I see these great old races with the new commentary. Such a pity.
    However it does give Nick Harris to get things right for a change... Really hope he retires soon.

    Dorna have dubbed the original commentary with todays English language live motogp.com commentators, Gavin Emmett and Nick Harris...Nick Harris was probably doing the original BBC version, and he did work for channel 9 Sydney with Barry Sheene et al also, I believe...motogp also replaced the original on screen graphics with 'modern' motogp offerings...

      This race would have been shown live exclusively in the Uk on SKY TV so it would have been Julian Ryder and Keith Huewen doing the commentary.

    Barros was excellent, but his head was not the strong point. When Shuwants and Lawson fall, Alex is 3 or 4 seconds ahead of Carriga and Criville, this difference is lost in less than 2 laps, then it is lost. But still the greatest two-wheeler in Brazil, my reverences ... sorry google translator
