  • Hey, so I decided to make a video about my experiences living with Speech Apraxia. I wanted to show people what a 21 year old sounds like with this disorder. Sorry about the video being so long. Hopefully you guys don't mind. Enjoy!
FYI- I did not edit this video.

Jaron, Thank you. Our son was diagnosed today, and my wife is on the verge of tears. I am totally sending her this video. She is so worried that he isn't going to have a normal life. You are proving otherwise. :)

Kelvin Gerold it'll be okay! I had this too, and I'm 22 now. I went to speech therapy for a total of 13 years. I'm a pre-nursing student, about to apply for the nursing program at my college after this semester!! 😻 I’m also thinking of becoming a dental assistant, so I need to make a decision soon lol

Well i always know I had speech issues. But I always thought it was minor problems. I recently recorded my ps4 online play and I can even tell what I'm saying.

I am a father of twin 4 1/2 year old boys. One of them has Apraxia. He has been in therapy since he was 3. He is a ever happy, every positive kid, but he is starting to realize he is different. Watching this helped me. I thank you for that. But more so it showed me that he has a future much like yourself.

I actually have two children with verbal apraxia. My 10-year-old had come a long way but it's great to see how far you've come to reassure me that things will be fine when she's grown. Hers was diagnosed are 'severe.' I also have a 5-year-old who has it even more severe than she did.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have a 2 year old who has is red flagged for apraxia. He is only just starting to imitate sounds/basic words so we will go for his official evaluation in another 6 months (assuming he is imitating enough to evaluate). It has been weighing on my heart a lot lately on what his future will look like. Your story gives me hope that with continued support and therapy he can go on to accomplish his dreams. Congratulations on all your successes

I feel comfort and hope for my 3 year old niece that was diagnosed 6 months ago. You are the type of person I always wanted my kids to look to. Positive through hard work.
Professional role model. You are awesome. I’m glad you didn’t edit the video. It was perfect as is.
God Bless you all your days.

Thanks for putting this up / out there, Jaron.
You are doing a fantastic job of handling your circumstance. I have a 19-year old who is dealing with apraxia and a severe stutter. I'm showing him this video and hopefully he can use your experience as a springboard to take his progress to the next level.
And congratulations on the RN, and I assume your BSN in 16.
It can take you a long way, and you can affect far more people than you will ever imagine - says the spouse of a Former NA who went on to get her BSN and then her MSN/CRNA. It gets waaay better!

    Hi Jaron
Thanks for sharing your story. It was enlightening to learn of your experience of having apraxia from birth. I was afflicted with apraxia at age 56 as a result of a stroke. I can’t image dealing with the challenges of apraxia on the schoolyard. You are inspiring. Like you plan post an unedited RUclips video of my experience acquiring and overcoming apraxia. Thank you.

This video DID help! You're awesome and should be very proud of yourself for everything you have accomplished! My son is 6 years old and was also diagnosed with apraxia and low muscle tone in his mouth at the age of 3. It is very hard (more so for me) to see him struggle to get his words out. He is such a happy kid and doesn't seem to let him bother him. Quick question..do you remember how often you had ST in elementary school? He only gets it 2x a week in a small group. I feel he definitely needs more. Apraxia is more than overcoming typical speech problems that children grow out of. It requires intense therapy. (Just wanted your opinion) Anyway, thank you for this video! You were a big help and I wish you the best of luck in what ever you do. ~Lisa

It's so hard as a parent isn't it? My son is now 12 soon to be 13 and still has difficulties, this video has really given me hope for him. One thing i had to come to terms with is not knowing how clear his speech will be as an adult. I hoped his speech would of been corrected years ago. One thing i've realized for sure, is that even if my sons speech doesn't improve he has a bright future. It takes considerable strength of character to get through each day struggling to be understood. I can already see my son has strong will, is very unique, has great coping skills, a big imagination, has more empathy for others then any kid i know his age. No matter what your child will find their strengths. Aside from that we live in a fortunate time where there is technology to aid them. So keep plugging along at the speech therapy, but don't let it be the only factor that you use to judge how well he/she is going to do in the future. Focus on your child's strengths and nurture them! Also, try not to let yourself over worry, or feel like your failing your child (this is something that got into my head a lot, especially when other moms (especially my own mom) made comments that made me feel judged, or made me worry about my son even more) Your clearly doing all that you can to help your child, and only you know your child the best.

Hey everybody. Thought I would drop a line here and say that I was diagnosed with apraxia of speech as well. At the time of my diagnosis, I was about 18 months old. I didn't start talking or say my first word until 3 1/2. My Mom put me in five sessions of speech therapy per week from 18 months-5 years old. I had moderate apraxia. Today, I'm 20, and if you met me on the street, there is absolutely no way anyone could tell that I had apraxia. The one person I have in my life to thank for overcoming my diagnosis is my Mom. She was my biggest advocate, and never gave up on me. Also, I'm doing well in college, and studying human physiology! Anything is possible, you are your child's biggest advocate in life.

Brilliant, my little boy and us where told this morning that he has apraxia. You automatically think the worse and panic yet the more videos I've watched the more hope I know my son will get better with it. He has over 40 words as of yet but struggles to ask for the right thing with associated word to it unless we tell him the correct word and then he'll repeat it. Its so frustrating as we know he knows what he wants.. thanks for giving me hope for my little boy

My son is 22 and is very lonely. He was very young when he was diagnosed. He’s always struggled to have friends even though he played team sports for 8 years and all through high school. Now he is really scared of getting a job(not being able to perform good enough). Not motivated to go to college. He wants to be a gamer and RUclipsr but is struggling. I’m worried he doesn’t have anyone like him to talk to that understands him. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you for recognizing the efforts that your mom made to ensure you succeed. I want to be that mom too and stay positive. I know these comments are from years ago but my son was suspected of having it today, he’s 2.5yr. I just want to be as educated as I can be in every single aspect I can think of to help as much as I can without being overbearing/overprotective parent either as I want him to be independent and experienced success and failures too.

my little sister has apraxia. when she was younger my parents took her to doctors and none of them could figure out what she had. All the doctors thought she was deaf at first. they even made her wear hearingaids. later one of her teachers figured out that she had apraxia and she began speech therapy. She is 15 years old now. she is still pretty hard for strangers to understand even some family can't understand her but I am the one who is the most close to her so I know what she is saying all of the time. she is my best friend. That's exactly why I clicked on this video as well. My 6yo is struggling with AOS but we found out he is graduating from one phase of therapy to the next ahead of schedule. It's so hard when people assume your child has a cognitive disability and they treat them differently. They need people to treat them like every other child.

I am turning 18 soon. I also have an Apraxia. People can usually understand me if I slow down. And some words are hard for me(like all sounds you need to turn your voice on for like z,j etc) and that there some words I need to drop a word if it 2 words together at the end of the word that is hard to say.

I am 18 and also have verbal apraxia. Like you I started speech therapy early on, but I "graduated" from it in 2nd grade. I moved around a lot in middle school and I have had schools send me to their speech therapist and I have been told that there is nothing else that they can do for me. Recently, I have also almost had to think about what I am saying more because I am having trouble pronouncing everything. There are even some words that I avoid saying at all possible costs.I often feel really insecure when I hear recordings of my voice and have often thought about doing voice therapy to change it. Watching your video helps me feel a little better about myself and not so ashamed, so thank you for sharing your story!

He has global dyspraxia, so as hard as speech is, so is pointing or walking or anything else. He works very hard, and we are so proud of how far he has come. As a mother I am very grateful to you. I know not every kid with CAS will turn out like you, but seeing even one such amazing person is so moving, even though you have lived it, you can't know what it means to a parent, until you are one. @@CCAnne my son is now 9, my in-laws funded 6 day a week speech for a few years and now at 9 he is in speech 2 times a week. He lives a very normal life, his friends understand him, though he does have issues still you can understand him. His friends understand him and when he has trouble all of his teachers know so about his apraxia and just ask him to say it again slower and he is very comfortable with it. Have faith, it feels like yesterday he would just stand in a corner looking miserable because he couldn’t communicate.

Jaron thanks for posting this. What an inspiration you are. I have a 13 year old son who was diagnosed with apraxia when he was three. He did speech therapy and just recently stopped. He is in his last year of middle school and feels too embarrassed to go to therapy. He gets pulled out of class. He tends to stutter a lot and there are certain words I cannot understand such as if he says jerk it sounds like joke. I felt therapy at the school is not enough and he was not getting enough one on one. I looked at alternate therapy for awhile but wasn't having luck. I took him to an ear nose and throat doctor once because he sounds nasal and I though maybe it has to do with his sinuses. He could not find anything wrong. One thing you did not mention is what kind of doctors did your mom take you to? My mom is wanting me to take my him to a neurologist. I feel that all they will do is diagnose him with apraxia so it would be a waste of time. It really is hard for him because there are days he is really upset and feels he will never get better. He is in theater arts at school and he does a lot of behind the scenes stuff so it is difficult for him to speak.

+Angie Fierros I believe my voice is very nasal sounding like as well. I took speech therapy all the way until I was a Junior in High School! Does he like to sing? Maybe voice lessons would be better suited for him or singing in a choir since they focus a lot on pronunciation. I highly encourage speech therapy :)

Hello! I wish I could message you personally but unfortunately I don’t know if I can or even how too. My son is almost 5 and had SEVERE Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I’m feeling quiet upset and frustrated because all I want to know is how he will go as he gets older. He’s making great progress at the moment because his speechie is amazing. He’s gone in 12 months from practically not being able to say one word to being able to make two word sentences with GREAT concentration... it’s very hard for him, and I feel sad for him.
Your words and your experience would mean the world to me.

Hi, I'm Lola and I have Dyspraxia. When I was younger my mum noticed that I wasn't speaking when other children was, around the same age your mum noticed for you, she went to the doctors and was referred to a speech therapist that specialised in autism. This meant that people supposed that I was autistic but we found out that I had verbal dyspraxia. I don't ever remember not being able to speak because I just assumed everyone could understand me. My mum fought for me to have a teaching assistant so that I was able to attend a mainstream school, as I was told I would never be able to read or write if I did, I proved then wrong having achieved lots academically and outside of school. I usually say that I could speak properly when I was 6-7 but I still struggle to his day and get taken the mick out of when I say the wrong word or blur my speech. You are the first person who I've found that I think has been on a similar journey.

My 8 year old with apraxia has been asking me about adults with apraxia. He seems more aware of it than he ever has. I wondered if he knew how he sounded to others. It doesnt seem like he does. Would it be helpful for.me to record him speaking and show him? Hes such a trooper. He doesnt let it hold him back all. He volunteers to pray for everyone.
Thank you for sharing your story. Its so helpful!! Im going to show my son your videos so he doesnt feel so alone. Youre amazing. Youve overcome so much and youre so strong. Thank you for paving the way for others and just being so genuine and authentic. God bless you sweetheart!

This gives me hope, your speech sounds great, but most importantly you have a great outlook! I can tell you have had to be strong in life. I don;t think people can fully appreciate just how much a language impairment can affect someone, the nuisance of having to repeat yourself more then once to get someone to understand, awareness that your speech is different, anxiety, and just the general exhaustion you must feel at the end of the day having to work so hard at something that just comes effortlessly to others. My son ( age 12) has apraxia and a language disorder (dyslexia) I know he has to work really hard at his speech and his school work. My heart breaks for the daily struggles he goes through. As his mother i want to push him to improve but i also want to let him just be him. I also can't hear his speech disorder as clearly as others can because ive developed the ability to lip read over the years. He's been in speech therapy since the age of 3. Its hard as a parent because people like to bring it up, mainly teachers giving you a laundry list of your child's weaknesses not bothering to mention the positives. My own mother, loves to constantly bring up how she can't understand him on the phone and make up reasons (seemingly in an effort to prove its my parenting at fault because i let him play video games and watch tv sometimes) It bothers me when others approach me because they can't understand him. Like as if its so hard to the decent thing and clarify what someone is trying to say with them instead of treating them essentially like a non human. His main issue now is he speaks too fast. I think he does this out of habit trying to cover up the fact that he makes speech errors, or maybe he is just excited. Its encouraging to hear that you didn't get bullied in school for it. My son has been at the receiving end of a few rude comments. I Still worry a great deal about how he will be treated in high school, he doesn't always wanna talk to me about mistreatment. I can tell when he's had a bad day, because he is moody towards me, and typically we get along great. I often wonder what his speech will sound like when he is older, i used to wonder at age 3 and so on at the earlier years i figured he would be speaking 100 percent clearly before age 10. I now realize, he may never be 100 percent coherent with his speech no matter how hard he works at it . Likely he will improve greatly as you have, but whether he does, or how much he improves, in the large scheme of life it doesn't matter its who you really are that matters most! Thanks for the inspiration and best of luck to you in the future!

Hello. My son just started speech therapy, he's 2. I have 2 questions. 1. They say apraxia often occurs along with autism. We're you diagnosed with autism as well? And 2. I was wondering, does it always feel like hard work with every word you say, or at this point in your life does speaking feel natural and effortless to you? Does it feel like you're constantly working hard and consciously thinking about pronouncing things correctly or do you feel more relaxed when you speak now without having to think too much about how you're going to say things?

Your journey seems to have been a lot of learning through different medium, in the private therapy you received when you had to learn where the tongue is positioned and all the different pronunciations do you have a specific name for that therapy? Thank you again and keep having a blast! Tonia

No I do not. I think it was regular speech therapy since most of the time I was in a group of other kids. Music class helped a lot when I was in high school. Definitely would recommend voice lessons IF your child likes to sing or like music in general.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your video. I have a 4 year old with apraxia of speech. He's been in therapy for 2 years and is considered severely delayed in his speech. It's encouraging to see how you've persevered and overcome your challenges. In a little over a year, he'll be starting school, and I am concerned about his getting teased. Is there anything in particular that your parents said or did to help you out when you faced teasing at school? Thanks so much for posting this video, your honesty about apraxia, and for showing an unedited version. It's really helpful to us parents out here in cyberspace!

My son has autism and childhood apraxia of speech. I have been so worried about whether he will speak because he is about to be five and still has no more than ten words and they are unintelligible to most people.
