They're Norwegian. This video took like 6 months to make. All the drawings were done by hand. The song/video has 1.9 Billion views It's Timeless. Lol. This Never gets old and I still, being 2024, haven't ever seen a video quite like this. Talent is Talent! Not one hit wonders.
One of THE BEST olde school music videos EVAAAAAAAH !!
Yessss!!
The word Eureka is also the state motto of California.
Nah neighbor, this one is still cutting edge.
This *AWESOME* music video 🎵🎶 pushed the boundaries of technology at the time. Just as the Movie 🎥 *"Avatar"* did back in 2009!!!
They did an acoustic version of this song a few years ago and dude still has the pipes.
morten harkets voice is compltely shot these day. he sounds like he has been repeatidley kicked in the nuts.
@@thedisabledwelshman9266 he's about to be 65. His voice is still great for his age. The acoustic version he is referencing was from 2017 and he sounded amazing there.
@@groovelife415 not till september
@@thedisabledwelshman9266 Morten got covid and laryngitis when the band toured two years ago. They had to cancel several concerts, and probably should have canceled more than they did. He is probably recovered now. I went to two concerts with the band in the same year, and his voice was fine then. Of course, he's also getting older, like the rest of us, and his voice is getting deeper because of that.
@@thedisabledwelshman9266 okay? 6 months away. Soooo long.
They had so many fabulous songs in Europe, The Sun Always Shines on TV, I’ve been Losing You, Manhattan Skyline, Stay on These Roads. Love all of them.
And their haunting cover of Crying in the Rain.
Don't forget You Are The One, a really underrated feel good song 😊❤️
One of THE greatest albums..... not a single duff song on it ❤
@@necessaryevil3428absolutely!And one of the best pop albums of the '80s but this debut is kinda 'Greatest hits" on its own!
When they did that unplugged show a few years ago , still sound as good as they ever did❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥
A-Ha also did the title song to the James Bond film The Living Daylights.
With help from the Duran Duran team. I met Morten at Charles De Gaulle airport 86.
It took 4 months to draw the 3,000 drawings used in the video. The technique is called rotoscoping, and is actually more than a hundred years old. The artist is Michael Patterson, and the director is Steve Barron. Very time consuming technique, so we are unlikely to see more videos like this. The video helped promote the song and the band, but the song stands well on its own. The band's manager says that it has been played 350 times a day on the radio in the US for more than 35 years.
Fantastic band. I highly recommend you check out more of their music. Next song: The sun always shines on TV.
Rotoscoping is around 140 years old. It was 100 years when the video was done.
@@doomhunter697
The technique was invented by Max Fleischer in 1915, but it had earlier predecessors.
@@ahkkariq7406 He just named it, there are several short films before him that used it. Go beyond Wikipedia.
@@doomhunter697 Possibly Britannica is also wrong? "The Fleischers invented the rotoscoping process, still in use today, in which a strip of live-action footage can be traced and redrawn as a cartoon."
Comic book girl meets comic book guy, fall in love despite his lack of dimensionality. Comic book world tries to stop them. Comic book guy breaks out of that toxic dynamic, becomes a real boy. Tale as old as time. 😊
Now AI boyfriends are the equivalent, especially in China, S. Korea, Japan, etc.
Please do their next hit "The Sun Always Shines on TV" to see that they don't live happily ever after. (spoiler alert)
They have eleven studio albums, eight compilation albums, six box sets, ten extended plays, and fifty singles.
A-ha have made it into the Guinness Book of Records, played hundreds of concerts throughout the world, made the theme song for a James Bond movie, played on various Grammy shows and at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards.
They are still touring and releasing albums to this day. No one hit wonder does that.
I remember watching this video in the 80s and wished we could go back to that time. Love the reviews
This song and video came out in the fall of 1985 when I was pregnant with my son. It always reminds me of that time when I was so happy and excited to become a mom. My son died 5 years ago and I started hearing it again, a lot. Wherever I'm at, in a store, coffee shop, bar, this song would come on and I became convinced somehow Michael had something to do with it. It happened too often, it wasn't a coin.
So sorry for your loss ❤️🩹
I’m sure that is what he is doing to show you he’s with you! ❤️
I believe you…my 17 year old son passed away 20 years ago (to me yesterday). He plays little jokes on me. My tv will come on by itself or the light will turn on and off. His last birthday present was a dragon statue and every day it turns sideways. I love it. There IS somewhere beyond! 🖖🏻🇨🇦
I love that lead Morten Harket did The Masked Singer and actually sang this song. It was like, bruh, you're the only one that sounds like that. It was awesome. 😂
Maybe one hit wonders in the US. But the rest of the world has had the pleasure of enjoying this fabulous band and their wonderful songs for 40 years.
Not one hit wonders. I remember the singer was on the Masked Singer in the UK and his vocal range was incredible! Great reaction guys!
Here in Europe but also Latin America( plus) were multi hit singles and albums band and great live performers. They toured very often and were very succesful in the '80s.Also their '00s comeback albums and tours were also succesful but didn't really care to make it big in US.Seen them live several times btw.
As a Norwegian I've got to say this is pretty cool ❤🇸🇯 and they are not one hit wonders they have a bunch of hits in the rest of the world.
Melhor banda e vocalista de todos os tempos, a-ha para sempre. O Brasil ama o a-ha.👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
In America they are OHW.
@@williamjones6031 I disagree… “Sun always shines on tv” was another hit in US and video was on heavy rotation on MTV, also Living Daylights from Bond movie was quite popular in US; but it’s true - they definitely had way more hits in Europe not only in 80s but 90s and 2000’s
@@williamjones6031 In America we think we are the world. "Take on Me" has 2 billion with a B hits on RUclips. Most bands never have a career with that many hits on RUclips of their songs.
@@stevec3872 At least they had one. I know people who would kill for just one. Kudos here. On the bright side I didn't have to people all about their other "hits".
The 80s will never be duplicated. Such innocence. Last decade before big tech, Internet and phones. Nobody locked their doors. So free and easy
I am so glad I was a teenager in the 80s. I miss it so much.
@@L.A.Tex_Norwayme too. So awesome
Rose tinted glasses: the comment
Americans consider them a 1-hit wonder, and there's no doubt in the states this was their one huge hit, but The Sun Always Shines On TV charted too, and they have the James Bond theme to the Living Daylights... but they have so many great songs beyond that. Hunting High And Low, Manhattan Skyline, Stay On These Roads, Crying In The Rain, Summer Moved On, Forever Not Yours, Foot Of The Mountain, Butterfly Butterfly, and so many more. Americans en mass missed the boat on A-ha...
I remember when RUclips became a thing my mum showed me this music video, Thriller and Shakespeare’s Sister Stay 🤣
"stay" is great . I believe they did a reaction to it?
Manhatten Skyline , The Sun Always Shine On Tv Is a def must after this . Morten Harket has such an incredible voice. I watched a doc on Aha , and if remember correctly . this song was written by Morten when he was about 17 ( but dont hold me to it lol ) I do know that they went for several years , reconstructing this song , until they finally ended up with this version .The video Totally , blew up on MTV , cause the whole " cartoon " like idea , was never seen before on that scale . As far as I know , he actually had a thing going on with the girl in the video
I so wanted to be Morton Harket in this video, watching it literally took up hours of my childhood. And it’s still a great video now, great longevity ❤❤
Ok but his name is Morten though 😉
@@kristofferholst6053*autocorrect. Which changed it from the correct to the incorrect. Glad you knew exactly what I meant though. 🤷🏼♂️😂
Released many times before it grabbed19 October 1984 (1st release)
5 April 1985 (2nd release)
16 September 1985 (3rd UK release) and then the rest is history.
I was 11! I had the biggest crush on the lead singer! I loved this music video!!
They're Norwegian! Great song, so catchy! :D Ninja Sex Party did a great cover!
Do you guys know how much joy this song brings me?! I love 80’s music!!! This is in my top 5
80s had so much great music. Billy Joel, Huey Lewis and The News, Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Gloria Estafan/Miami Sound Machine, Jan Hammer (Crockett's Theme was the greatest instrumental ever done imo). I was so lucky to have been an 80s kid-and when I hear the music we have now it makes me miss it even more.
Dire straights yes …. The rest are sh1te 😂
Just a great song and groundbreaking video for the time. They played the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert (that Aurora also played at) and the singer at 64, in 2015, still sounds the same with that amazing falsetto. Worth a check out. A great Norwegian band.
This isn’t an 80’s song, this is THE 80’s song
A-ha - was bigger around the World, check out their songs - Sun only shines on TV - Hunting High and Low
As a metal head in high school…this band was pretty much sacra religious!
But this song is a classic for sure!
I'm a 50 year old Oklahoman and I grew up with this music. MTV was real MTV. I've watched the video a million times and listened to the song 100 million times. It's timeless.
This is another song with sad lyrics over happy music. One of the best that era had to offer. You should watch A-ha's live unplugged version from MTV Unplugged from 2017.
A-ha is actually not a one hit wonder. Well in America yes but in the rest of the world they been at it. They actually been doing it for many years. 2011 was their last album i believe so they been doing this for decades..
Nope, latest album was 2023 true north
Also had the album cast in steel in 2015
And they had an mtv unplugged album also
@@markwebster7435 Oh was it? I checked the wiki and it said 2011. I haven't really listened to them since *The sun always shines on TV * .
They aren't even one hit wonders here in the US. It's just that most people in America just don't listen to anything that's not 'Murican.
A-Ha has had many hits throughout the years. We only got to hear a few songs in the US unfortunately. When I researched them a few years ago I saw they had so many great albums. I have all their albums now. There are plenty of foreign bands that we only get to hear a few songs on the radio in the US.😢 . They did a MTV Unplugged in Norway. They were and still are popular throughout the world, especially Europe. Not one hit wonder band. They're still together.
7th grade, goog grief. Such a crush on this band. Would love to hear some Violent Femmes!
Seconding Violent Femmes
Same here lol!!!:)
same here😁💘
I can't describe what a sensation this video was back in 1984. It blew people's minds, and to be honest it still works beautifully in 2024. No CGI in those days. All hand-made. Amazing. Song's a banger too.
watching at this video after years makes me wonder, how revolutionary that video was back in its time and yet not appreciated, we probably just watched that video back then without thinking how cool and difficult that was for that era to put together a video like that, with the glass in the middle which shows real world vs. drawn world co existing, looking at it now I can only grant it all the credit it deserves, magnificent video and remember back then, computers didn't have the capacity to process something like that, it just wouldn't happen so the amount of effort must've been humongous!!
When you listen to an a-Ha song, remember that the lead singer, Morten Harket, didn't have a great understanding of English. So, their songs sound a bit weird when you really pay attention to the lyrics.
That girl in the video clip at the beginning said she had a cat on a leash, and that cat was like “Nope.”
Two hit wonder. Over here "The Sun Always Shines On TV" did ok. That video starts much as this one ends. A decent song if you want to check it out. Fun to watch as usual. Be well guys, and have a fine weekend.
I remember MTV playing Hunting High and Low
Damn... I forgot about that one. They did have the odd decent song for sure. Thanks for the reminder. Be well.@@5tran9eMCMLXXII
Pure 80s, love it 👍
Same!!!
I'm an 80's girl and it was the best of times!!!
@@Julie-sz2zv me too 😎👍🙋♀️
I remember this was one of my dad's favorite songs when I was growing up. We lost him last year and forgot all about this song. Thanks for giving me back the memories.
Fun fact: I saw Ghost back in September in Houston & when Ghost was setting up their stage setting after Amon Amarth played, Ghost started playing “Take on Me” on the speakers…it was funny at first, but they are both from Scandinavia, so it made sense 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Probably a one hit wonder in the US - but not in the rest of the world. In fact they entered Guiness Book of World Records when in 1991 they played live to 198.000 in South America. You guys missed out on some brilliant music by a-ha. Please do just one more song by a-ha: either Manhatten Skyline or The Sun Always Shines on TV.
Naaahhh! Please do more than one more song by a-ha: Manhatten Skylines, The Sun Always Shines on TV and then you have them going!
you're right 😅@@ahkkariq7406
Morning guys! Mannnnnn this takes me back!!!! I was 11 i think? I loved this video it would play a lot on vh1 and the radio I had the biggest crush on the singer! I miss the 80s sometimes! Good good ol times! Thanks for a trip back in time fellas!❤️👍💯🤓
Great reaction guys!! This made my Friday. Perhaps in the US they were more a one-hit wonder - not so here in Canada. The follow up to this song, The Sun Always Shines on TV is another synth marvel (and my favourite a-ha song!), and the album title track - Hunting High and Low (beautiful ballad) were quite popular here!
My sister introduced me to a-ha when I was 6 - and I've never looked back! Great group.
This video still holds up amazing today, as does the song! Now that you saw this version, you should react to their 'unplugged' version from 2017. Firstly, Morten Harket's voice is still incredible, but they've turned it into a ballad. It's not often where the same song can take on two completely different meanings when a span of 30 years are involved!
Other tracks to check: Manhattan Skyline, Scoundrel Days, Stay On These Roads, Lifelines, I've Been Losing You...
Cheers!!
Ya we didn't get another song from them
So Unfair How Ridiculously Handsome These Guys Still Are!!A-Ha ❤️
They were a "One hit wonder" in the USA . but in Europe they had quite a few hits and was a big deal :)
In my Primary School all girls had a crush on Morten back in the days ( me inkluded - until today 🤣)
This music video is iconic and a part of my childhood and teenage years - i think for many people, too. The album was the first music cassette I bought with my pocket money. A-Ha was and still is a big deal in Europe.
They are from Norway.
He was ridiculously good looking. And still is 🔥
Love this song always played it a lot lol. It was a great animation for it's time. Thanks for this memory lol. Stay real and awesome and keep up your wonderful work. Please never change Hollywood and Smokey. Love ya guys.❤ Dueces always ✌️✌️
Ok, true diner “love” story circa 1991. Guy walked in, really cute. I just happened to be in my best dress having lunch with another female from work. I had a bit more confidence that day and he and I kept making eye contact. Even as we walked out the door I looked at him one more time. We’d just made it to the car when I heard him running up behind me. We were running late and I was embarrassed despite my new found confidence so I just told him I had to go back to work. As we drove away my friend yelled out where we worked and what department I was in. He showed up 10 minutes later and we went out a few times. We didn’t really fit and mutually agreed we were done. But it’s a great memory to have.
An interesting dude note, the girl I was having lunch with became a friend of mine after I discovered the guy I was seeing was also seeing her telling me they were just friends. I was a feminist (retired around 2000, war was over) so I was cool with it, I had platonic male friends. Anyway, he told her we were just friends. She and I spoke one day and his web of lies fell apart. We found out there was a 3rd girl so we tracked her down and, long story short, told her who he really was.
Love this song. One of the best from the 80's and one of the best music videos played on MTV.
This was the most cutting edge video to that date! People were mesmerized for quite some time!
still one of the best music videos ever
They are Norwegian. Morten ( lead ), Mags ( keyboard ) and Pal ( guitar , and his name is like our Paul. I went and saw them in concert in 7th grade. That was in '87 I think. AMAZING VIDEO. It swept up a bunch of awards.
OMG - back to the teenageyears 😊 The video, amazing - At the time, it was truly groundbreaking.
The band is from Norway
I still love that hand-drawn rotoscoping (pretty much motion capture, but you're drawing over the live action footage into a moving drawing) technique for the music video!
This video was 🔥 and we all loved it! It was so different from all the videos being put out at that time!
2:50 When I was first getting into music, I thought all rap was only about superficiality. Money, girls, cars, chains...I've since been proven wrong.
Ages ago(OK two years ago after checking lol), I suggested you react to the Reel Big Fish cover of this song. Nice to finally see you do the original lol.
Also look up the literal version of this for a good laugh
MTV launched in 1981 and VH1 was 1985. Most videos started out on MTV.
The acoustic version is unbelievable and has a dark sad vibe. It's so good
I remember this from early MTV. 80s music was definitely weird.
Lol true!!!
This was the most amazing video when it came out and it is still one of the best! The rotascope/cartoon parts blew my mind!
They are pretty huge here in Europe, only a one hit wonder in the US, had nine top ten songs in the UK, five more in the Top 20 and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. You really should check out more of them, probably starting off with The Sun Always Shines On TV which was the follow-up single to Take On Me, #1 in the UK and the video starts where the one from Take On Me ends.
He's still performing, and hs's still hits these notes too.
They
Well...A-HA wasn't a one-hit wonder. They also had THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV and CRY WOLF.
This was one of their hits.
The greatest song still after all these years! I grew up listening to AHA ✌🏼🇳🇴 ( i was born in the sweet 80's ) Morten Harket has a incredible range in his voice! Aha translated to american must be like " oh yes i see" or something. This song will never die. I also remember that i had a crush on Morten 😅
Take on me means give me a chance and if it doesn’t work out i’ll be gone in a day or two and despite their lead singer bing 63 now he can still hit those high notes . take care 😘🏴 ❤️🇳🇴❤️A-HA FOREVER ❤️🇳🇴❤️
I've been an A-Ha fan since I was about 5 years old when this song came out.
I finally got to see them in 2022 and was absolutely blown away.
Morten still has the voice, and the rest of the band still play as tight as when they first started.
They really need to bring back that 80s Synth
Checkout Gunship modern day 80s band
From back when MTV played music videos 24/7. lol When this first came out, we'd never seen anything like it and thought it was amazing. It reminded many of us of a cartoon from the 60s called Speed Racer, so it incorporated the newness of the emerging video art scene with a nice dollop of nostalgia on top.
Sun always shines on tv, is part two on the music video!
Lost you boys for a while, Feeling great to be back =)
I am kinda proud of my country because of the music.....first it was A-Ha, then Kvelertak😎🤘Love your channel by the way👍
Still the best video of all time easily
Pitbull sampled this in 2013 featuring Christina Aguilera on 'Feel This Moment'.
Love That You Guys reacted to one of the best 80s Anthems 🔥💯
Sure, TOM is their hallmark, but I'd recommend to check out/react to some more of A-Ha to glean the story.
Guys, you have to check out the newest Linkin Park song. It's called Friendly Fire and it's as close to brand new as it can possible be - it's an unreleased single from One More Light sessions. And it's a banger. Beautiful, powerful song.
They were worldwide massive and had all the money thrown at them.
They did a Bond theme too, The Living Daylights when Timothy Dalton was playing Bond
I remember when this dropped on MTV,it was mind blowing then, and it's still impressive lo these many decades later!💘💘💘
A boxer that takes money to TANK a fight (to take a loss).
The end of the video is a nod to the end of the 1980 movie "Altered States"
Wow, first…love you guys, more industrial:)
This video was the most expensive video of its day.
And if you want to hear the eightiest song ever you should check out Michael Cretu - Samurai. Not known by many But he was married to pop Star ”Sandra” (of Maria Magdalena and inte heat of the night-fame) and was her producer.
I love that! Eightiest!!! Great word!!!:)
So i can actually hit the A sharp in this song it helps that my wife is a classically trained opera singer who taught me how
Not much of a fan of Scandinavian Techno-Pop Love Songs, but this one is a lot of fun. And the girl is pretty smoking hot. A real blast from the past, MTV era.
I used to believe that my closest friend of over 30 years would never betray me. I was wrong.
This video was decades ahead of other videos back when MTV meant MUSIC television. The lead singer still can hit the big note I saw a video recently!
i have no idea what theyre singing about. there is actually a slow acoustic version somewhere , where you can almost understand the words :p :)
Funny that you mentioned that this could have been a movie, because the first time I saw this video in the 80s was before the previews at the movie theater! A-Ha performed this song later that year at the Grammys IIRC. I remember feeling so sympathetic for the singer because he was obviously very nervous and he could not hit that high note.
Can't beat the 80's. best era for everything
He can still sing this... amazing acoustic version
Keen-eyed viewers here will spot actor Philip Jackson as the villain with the pipe wrench, better known to UK viewers as Inspector Japp in the definitive David Suchet adaptations of Agatha Christie's "Poirot" series
I was going to say that. Just as he says "Are they the cops?" - Er, well...
Thanks guys for this 80's masterpiece and making me feel like a kid again!
Decent synth pop song and clever video but I never 'took on' A-ha, and that's all I have to say about that. Cheers
Your loss, still going to this day, 11 studio albums of various styles. 2 Guinness book of records . Massive around the world, they abandoned the USA market in the 80’s.
This was a revolutionary video for the time. It was so cool. That style of art brings me back to my childhood for real tho.
This video was very advanced and well done. Great song...!!
The ska band Reel Big Fish has a great cover of this too
I prefer the version by Reel Big Fish.
I was distracted in the video by Dolly's face with no nose laughing my ass off 😅😂
Not a one hit wonder in Europe but they were in the US. This situation wasn’t to uncommon. There were a lot of bands big in other parts of the world that had or have records in those areas. And often those studio’s are a part of or owned by a large American company so someone there put out feelers to in other places and they get these bands from their subsidiaries and then they produce an album for the US and then see if they hit . This was most likely the case. A lot of the stuff that was made involving foreign acts in eighties was like that. Only a small percentage of the acts of the eighties were considered successful this means more then one album. A lot of the bands would hit with one album but without having air play in the eighties (radio or videos) they often would disappear as fast as they would appear.
It’s a-ha! Like you had an epiphany. That’s what it “means,” but it isn’t quite pronounced that emphatically! These guys are HUGE around the world with many albums and singles. Just not here in the States. They were Knighted in Norway, hold World Records and many other great accomplishments. A band to be reckoned with, even if we Americans think of them as a “one hit wonder.” Our loss, guys.
The last one is a rap about our female champion boxer of all time, Mrs Brækhus🤘
My favorite 80's song & video EVER!!!❤
