Starfield - DO NOT Play an Unarmed Build - IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED!

  • Starfield is an amazing game, but man Unarmed Builds SUCK! The amount of skill investment you need for the unarmed playstyle to be barely servicable is just insane. I really hope future patches or DLC offers some new benefits, maybe fist based weapons like brass knuckles. Let us know about your experience with unarmed.

I think Bethesda should definitely patch this build up considering all the skill trees which make it possible. They should either increase scaling tremendously, add "unarmed" weapons, or increase base unarmed damage by quite a bit

What they should do for unarmed is keep the damage as is, but give it fast, punchy strikes. Cyberpunk 2077 has some of the most fun unarmed combat that I've seen in the last 5 years. They could take some notes from that.

Bro, Cyberpunk is just fantastic in melee and unarmed combat, to the point where I honestly think it's TOO strong.
Playing a melee katana build turned me into a god in no time, and then on my second playthrough I went with a body-focused build, and suddenly had the overwhelming realization that my gorilla arms could one-shot nearly anything and I barely needed my shotgun at that point. Loving Starfield, but they *REALLY* need to do something with melee options. You can't even upgrade melee weapons like you can with ranged. I went all the way down the line and gain 10% with each melee kill, but I can already feel it falling behind ranged even with the self-healing.

As an unarmed connoisseur, I am also sad about this! There's also no toggle equip on favorite hotkeys (Since Fallout 4 mind you), so if you try to switch from a gun to fists, you gotta use the inventory menu every single time. The EM stun from Neurostrikes can mess with disarm chance for Martial Arts too, so if you skipped to tier 4, good flippin luck getting the rest of your Martial Arts levels. I did get a mirrored helmet, that reflects the damage as unarmed hits, so that's actually been pretty entertaining. And I did find out that KO'd enemies are basically free sneak attacks, so that's something too. Overall though, disappointing how much we need to commit to be somewhat viable, when other weapon skills completely overtake it.

Unarmed forces you to play in a unique way. Best way I found to play is to down all enemies with blue bar and then stop attacking them. Once they're all down, go for sneak attacks and oneshot them one by one. You can also pickpocket them while doing this. I don't consider fitness and wellness essential but the sneak stuff for sure is. I would say boostpack is essential for any melee too. If that crippled perk works for it, then that is your double damage buff that you asked for. So close of being good but it sucks 😂

@@SineN0mine3 Yeah in Fallout 4 there was a hidden item in your inventory with value c2c27 that you could never interact with but a console command could reveal it. And equipping that item made you go into unarmed mode. And there was an undocumented system for hotkeys in FO4 where you could bind a key to kick off "cf equipitem c2c27 0 1" to make a hotkey for unarmed. Useful for when in power armor. And the console command showinventory (iirc) would let you see the item would be flagged as worn when you were unarmed. So you could have a hotkey for unarmed in Fallout 4 without mods even.
BUT for Starfield, I used showinventory just looking around for either the same id or some other one with a new value which would get tagged as Worn when I went unarmed, in the hopes this hotkey backdoor was still there, but I found zilch, nada, zero.

unarmed combat needs some sort of grappling systems, certain commands to initiate a collar tie for example and maybe you could have a system like kcd’s attack star with throws being unlocked/practiced and executed by your relative positioning + the choice of star direction dictating the direction and type of throw you do. you could incorporate weapons with this same grappling system- maybe having a weapon in hand allows you to attack with the grapple initiated or if you have both hands unarmed it allows for more throws. the collar tie system could allow you to grab a meat shield lol and maybe the higher unarmed skill allows you to more effectively move the npc and reduces their ability to escape, this could be done by comparing your unarmed skill to theirs

They made perk synergies unnecessarily exclusive, they could've easily had the dueling skill also buff unarmed damage, and also had incapacitations EM damage buff work with neurostrikes, but they decided that melee and unarmed are two different things, when in reality the only difference is hitting with a stick vs hitting with fists. The final perk from dueling which states "Melee kills heal you for 10% of your health" is also lost on unarmed unfortunately, because despite meleeing an enemy to death with your fists, unarmed kills arent considered melee kills, so you dont get healed.

This one hit me hard, as I'm playing a Bouncer type character and tried to go the unarmed route (even named my ship the Swayze) but after about 10ish levels I pivoted to melee, as a lot of the supporting skills cross over, and I felt like I was falling behind the damage curve because I tried to invest in social skills on top of fighting. The change was immediate, and yes, much more fun.
Overall Starfield seems to devalue to close combat in general with no fistloads (brass knucks) or power fist type weapons. More so, you are unable to modify melee weapons at the work benches, or at least, I'm not able to modify any of them yet. This feels like a gap in the design that I do hope they address.

Add a damage increase to consecutive hits on an enemy. Then add in a few special moves like neck snapping for stealth kills, and arm/hand breaking to stop enemies from using firearms, and ground pounding to finish off downed enemies. Finally add in a special 3-5 kill powerup attack like Fist Flurry that slows down time and increases punching speed for a few seconds, or Cosmic Slug that lets you launch enemies into the stratosphere in a single punch.

Stupidest thing of all is you cannot favorite unarmed. It's absurd. No way to unequip a weapon that you have on your person without going into the menus.. meeeeeeeeeaning that if you want to do unarmed AND a weapon? Good luck. You cannot click on the weapon again in your favorites and unequip said weapon. Something you could do in fallout NV is unavailable here.
How that made it through testing is beyond me... and I'm sorry but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
This game is not worth the money. Full stop.

    My unarmed character build:
Name: The Human Spud (Looks like Uncanny Mr Incredible meme)
Origins: Orphan found suckling from the starchy teat of an irradiated Brain Sprout by the Xenowarfare scientists who took him to the facility on Kreet for further testing.
Bio: Some hear the call of the Great Serpent, The Human Spud hears the song of The Great Brain Sprout Hivemind; he must collect potato, and use the powers bestowed upon him to mash the uninitiated with his great mashers.

In The Elder Scrolls we relied on heavy armor boxing, requiring a small amount of skill points
In FALLOUT4, we use garbage to arm our fists, which requires reasonable skill points
In Starfield we can only rely on ourselves, requiring a lot of skill points

I feel like a fix is simple enough, just make unarmed attacks fast. The whole "critical hit plus chance of status defuff" wouid be dynamite if the attacks came out fast enough, even without increasing the base damage.

My tip, don't do an entire build around this, I'm investing on unarmed but not doing just this, I do it as a side skill.. for some certain moments, feels good enough, but as a secondary skill. It feels badass and funny to kill alien beasts with your bare fists, but for the training aspect.. like said in the video, focus on weak creatures to count towards the challenge. But it would be great if they update this or someone makes a mod that improves it for fights agaisnt humans.

Rank 1: boosts all unarmed damage by 50%
Rank 2: Boosts all unarmed damage by 20% after each consecutive hit.
Rank 3: Boosts all unarmed damage by 40% after each consecutive hit.
Rank 4: Boosts all unarmed damage by 60% after each consecutive hit. Plus, a 40% chance to send the target flying backwards. Dealing an additional 60% damage.

Man, this is rough. I just started my character on the first ship as unamed. I was really hoping for a return to some monk-like characters from earlier BSG titles or an armor/"powerfist" type build eventually--it's a real shame that isn't going to happen, at least not anytime soon.
I fully get the concept that punching some guy in a helmet doesn't make sense...but there are dedicated perks to the skill. Why spend all that time and such coding up a completely nerfed build in the first place, anyway?
I gues I'll reroll, try again and watch the patch notes down the road.

Even melee is mid as fuck. Clunky animations, zero upgrades and customization, no superior versions of the same weapon, so your damage caps out pretty quickly and it's not high at all. It can be fun, especially in the early to mid game, but only against humans. Going up against 3 terrormorbs one after the other during one of the quests really cured the fear I had of them since a few quests earlier. The scariest part of fighting the scariest enemy is now the amount of time I'll have to spend running in a circle around them while sluggishly swinging a weapon that may as well be a pool noodle at them, knowing it'll only get worse every subsequent time as the level scaling bumps up their health and armor.

Judging by the fact there are no unarmed weapons i honestly dont think bethesda intended for players to use unarmed almost at all.
It is my belief that unarmed perks were added as a challenge for melee users to gain additional perks since a lot of the unarmed skills also affect melee.
I dont think it was meant for anything beyond punch a few weak aliens to death over and over until you rank up, then switch back to a melee weapon.

Cyberpunk does unarmed right, once you get as far as your arms can physically take you, you swap them out for metal ones and keep levelling up. Plus theres the whole boxing side quest.
To be honest though its a little bit too OP if anything, but it's just as much fun punching goons into oblivion at level 50 as it is at level 5.

I started out with the idea of making an Unarmed character, but I was very quickly disabused of that notion.
The points investment alone was daunting enough, and it was quite apparent that there were no other force multipliers in the game to enhance my damage. Instead, I play her as more of a "gun-fu" build: Pistols and pistol strikes ranging from mid- to close-range combat. It's fast, fun, and versatile, and at Level 20 I only have two points invested so far: Pistols and Ballistics. Now I wonder if Martial Arts would aid in weapon-strike melee combat?

  • @MrJbedo

Unarmed and melee just feels so on rail. Its the same set of 3 strikes on repeat, and it takes you out because after the 3 the game resets and replays the anims with a delt it feels a bit clunky. Even fnv/fo3 had better unarmed melee than fo4 or skyrim

We have a bloody *boost pack* in the game.. why in god's name would they not include a literal superman punch that causes you to slam into targets at a distance for the cost of a little boost charge? Extremely easy fix, can bake in a really large stagger modifier or larger damage and put it on a small cooldown.
