- I constantly want to see where the evolution of music, especially metal and rock these days, is heading and I think I found it in this analysis of "Legion". So much so, that I chose this video as my Birthday release. Dan Tompkins absolutely slays it in this track, and it's such a great first impression of what TesseracT is doing, I want to hear SO MUCH MORE!

I am so pleased you checked out "Legion" by TesseracT with the AMAZING Dan Tompkins! He is a top-tier vocalist - one of my absolute favs! I've watched this man practice vocals for many hours and I am always in awe of him. I was in tears when TesseracT premiered this track. I love how he expanded upon his gorgeous vocal range here and blessed our ears with this masterpiece! There is a depth of emotion in his singing as well, it can really move you. Highly recommend giving the whole album, "War of Being," a complete listen because it is an incredible journey worthy of your time.
TesseracT are all masters of their craft and their soundscapes are always so powerful... You could barely go wrong with anything by them.
tbh I would love to see what one of their albums produced by Devin Townsend would sound like for this very reason

I think you'd really enjoy their song Hexes. There's a great video of them performing it in the studio, with the guest vocalist and everything. Also a wonderfully haunting & beautiful song.
Martin Grech, an amazing artist in his own right. Open heart zoo is the most haunting song I've ever listened to.
Agreed. 'War of Being' is an album's journey all by itself, and a pinnacle of sorts imo, but they've a wealth of gloriousness already in their catalogue, which shouldn't be slept on.

TesseracT is one of the few bands where I always listen to them by the album rather than by the song. Safe to say I was obsessed upon hearing them for the first time in a random recommended playlist.
That is the "correct" way to listen to TesseracT.
It is impossible to pick a song to start someone out on, equally impossible to choose an album. There are very few artist you can say that about. Good rule of thumb in my 30yrs of experience is none of them. One note, a single reverb trail, and i know who im listening to immediately. I also don't know of a single band in all of the history of rock and metal that only ever got better with every album.
The entirety of modern metal would not be what it currently is without meshuggah, and then tesseract. And just like the metalcore days, we're all gonna come out of these days with only a couple legendary acts in our pockets.
There is no other way to do so! Each album is a story in it's entirety
I've been waiting on this one since the day this song came out. His vocals in this are insane. So much emotion. Easily the best metal vocal performance of the year.
This shows why Elizabeth is the best! She helps you appreciate your favourites on a whole new level as well as learning about new artists. More learning leads to more innovation.

I still tear up every time I listen to it, there's nothing like this anywhere. The raw emotion, the build-up, the release, the lyrics, the story behind the video. I've never seen a band try something so profound and tell it in the best way imaginable. Music can be cinema, as it turns out.
Just, unbelievable. He was fantastic even on the earlier albums, now he's really mastered his craft and brought TesseracT to new heights. Masterful.
Ah, I'm excited about this one. I LOVE Daniel Tompkins' voice. As I was suggesting since a while. His take on Let The Truth Speak by Earthside is breathtaking. I hope you could react to this one as well. Daniel does incredible transitions from clean to harsh in that track and Gennady Tkachenko-Papizh adds fascinating vocalizations.

Totally agree with Let The Truth Speak from Earthside. Please. You will not regret it Elizabeth and an amazing amount of emotion from Daniel on that one as well. Also, War of Being, the title track from Tesseract's album is just astonishing in the range of emotion and technique and the video is amazing as well.

Dan (and all of the guys in TesseracT really) are all REALLY nice guys too. Great musicians and great people. Oh, and he pulls this off live.. It's insane!
Back in 2013, i caught them at the Paradise in Boston on the Altered State tour. Needless to say it was transformative. If you know the famous venue, its like 1,000 capacity standing room only.
After the show when they were breaking down I was able to walk right up to Amos and Acle and shoot the shit, shake hands, etc. Totally down to earth. Here I am blown away in what I considered interacting with genius, and they were just humbled that I loved the show. Amazing people.
@@NoahWolfe Yeah.. Acle and I have become friends and he's every bit the guy you met after the show. Super relaxed and kinda quiet. Crazy that he writes almost all of the music.

Yes! More Tesseract reactions! Few bands can create ambience like them. It’s also worth checking out something from their Altered State album where they had Ashe O’hara singing for them, he was also very impressive.

I’ve been a Tesseract fan since One, but this is the best I’ve ever heard from them. I have a new favourite with every album and their emotional songs like Seven Names, Beneath My Skin/Mirror Image, Legion, get me every time. The “most played” part of this song just makes me so emotional omg

Happy birthday!!! So glad you chose this song. Dan's always been an incredible vocalist but has put in so much work since the beginning of Covid, and it seriously shows. I think there are a lot more songs from TesseracT worth checking out, like Tourniquet, War of Being, Juno, and Eden.
He appeared on a song from the band Earthside called "A Dream In Static", which has some of my favorite vocals ever. I think you'd thoroughly enjoy it!! He also did vocals on a song on their album that just came out, which is also great.
He also worked on a project in 2014 called Skyharbor. He has a vocal singthrough of a song called "Maeva" that's just absolutely incredible. Whether you react to it for a video, or in your own time, I think the Dan Tompkins rabbit hole goes very deep.

Already made a Pandora song list with TesseracT, Radiohead, Muse…..Personally I think you hit the nail on the head….these guys are incredible! FINALLY!!! Personally I would have chosen War of Being or April as a first-time listen but I'm so glad you got around to them. You HAVE to check out Dan Tompkin's vocals in Skyharbor as well (Illusion: Celestial is my all-time favorite).
I’m glad that she react to this song because it has everything Dan has in his singing arsenal. He was experimenting with his new vocal techniques on this album. It’s incredible.
Daniel has another band that is actually a pop band, it's called White Moth Black Butterfly, and its comprised of members from all around the world from Dan's other projects and in my humble opinion, acts as a great starting point.
Oh, and he sings along a female singer called Jordan Bethany, who is absolutely fantastic.
Love the way he plays with dissonance in this track, so many harmonies and notes he teases flat for eternity before hitting pitch makes it so unsettling. Makes the harsh ending hit extra hard too.

I first saw Dan perform with Tesseract some 10+ years ago. Listening to his vocal progression into the powerhouse today had been amazing.
This vocal performance and arrangement is one of the most powerful and emotional that I've heard in any genre of music. Magnificent stuff.

Just saw Tesseract in concert in Melbourne, Australia on the weekend and Dan is phenomenal live. I have now seen Tesseract twice and each time they get even more incredible live.

Never clicked on a video faster, Dan is the GOAT of prog metal vocalists. Hexes live studio version like others have said is absolutely perfect.
That high frequence percussion is probably a stack cymbal! They are two (or more) cymbals on top of each other. This type of cymbal arrangement create a bright short sound that fit this genre very well!

this song is dan's vocal magnum opus. he literally took all of his experience singing in tesseract and other various side project (i encourage you to explore), and put it all out there in this beast of a song. you should invite him for a cup of tea, he is a really nice guy, and fellow vocals nerd.

Elizabeth, may I suggest you check out Periphery if you have not already? Another progressive metal band. Two songs that come to my mind are Stranger Things and Satellites. Both will take you on a journey and I'd be curious to hear your analysis.

IMHO Legion is TesseracT's magnum opus, and one of the most thoroughly impressive songs I've ever heard. They have absolutely set a new gold standard for metal and music in general.
Dan is probably my favorite modern metal vocalist. I saw Tesseract live this past year and their performance blew me away!
