- Adam Wade Of Rare Classic Cars & Automotive History History Discussing And Driving My 1989 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series.
These Lincolns of this generation, 1980-1989, i feel had better ergonomics and build quality than the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham equvilant in my opinion. Ford sold a ton of them since they were so popular and beloved by so many people. I love the story behind this car being owned by a Lincoln dealership owner for his wife too.
Thank you. I too have been in and worked on those Cadillacs and the quality simply wasn't there.
I think 1989 was the best looking style for that car, I like the rear tail light treatment with the horizontal brushed aluminum the best of all the models
Me too, man! Me too!
Magnificent color combo on this truly excellent example. It's getting harder and harder to find clean Town Cars of any generation, but in particular these 80s models.
Thank you very much. Yeah that will be the last long trip this one goes on. It's just too much stress and worry. You can't park or drive anywhere safe.
Adam’s evaluation of cars is SPOT ON! I remember seeing a Givenchy 1983 Mark VI for sale on a used car lot in 1988 when I was 22 and took it for a test drive. I was daily driving my 70 Mark iii at the time and right away I noticed exactly what Adam stated. The steering felt very tight and faster ratio and I thought it was rack and pinion as it felt very “tight”. The ride was also very isolated and quiet but very stable and well dampened. Over all the perfect balance of isolation, decent handling and steering preciseness. These are great rode cars for sure!
I love driving these cars. Such comfort and excellent fuel mileage to boot. Thank you very much for watching!
Very good. I had a 1982 Town Car and still own a dark blue 1980 MKVI sedan with the 351 and a 302 1981 metallic dark red Signature Series Mark VI sedan. They are essentially the same cars.
The 351 engine are rare.
Yes awesome vehicles. Thank you!
Yes for sure 1980 model year only. I will have to get around to doing a video on it.
Nice Lincoln! I used to work at the Budd Co. and Budd made all the major class A sheet metal assemblies for the Lincoln, Mark, & Continental - Door, Fenders, Quarter Panels. Deck lids, Hoods and Roof assemblies. They also did the T-birds - 55-50 BIW . The Lincolns were built at Wixom Michigan and I spent a few days there and Budd had a representative there at all times. Thanks for your video.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Love those wire wheels on the 89 Town Car!!! I love the key-pad entry on the Town Car. I think Lincoln came out with the keypad in 1981? The interiors are even "more quiet" with the velour cloth interiors...
I love the churn sounds of this generation Town Car including the power steering pump and the AC compressor and don't forget about the transmission howl at low speeds.
I believe 1989 was the only year with the really "orange" front turn single assembles.
Great Video...
I vividly remember the Ford AOD transmission whine. I was a kid then but I had 3 aunts that drove 1980’s Mercury Grand Marquis and spent many hours and miles in those Panther platform cars. The transmission whine, the click of the door latches, and the “Ride Engineered” badge on the dash instantly come to mind.
@@khakiswag you shouldn't here a "click" of the door handles unless the sticker bushings are missing.
Yes I believe it was 1981 when the keypad was introduced.
@@tonyscarcare5657 I maybe using the wrong description of the sound but I remember they all had the same mechanical latching/unlatching sound that was very different from my Moms Park Avenue. Either way I liked those cars more than my Mom’s Buick. Also love that Ford is still using the keypad 40 years later, great feature that is still very useful.
Keypad was the big technology for me as a kid, lol.
Great wheels on this car! The color combination (with the red leather) is primo. Thanks Tony and Adam.
You're welcome. Thank you very much!
I rented a brand new 1989 Town Car Signature Series for the Barrister's Ball in my second year of law school and it remains one of my favorite cars of all time. The car started and ran flawlessly, was super responsive for car of its size, and literally oozed class. We were the best-dressed couple there. I did not want to return the thing. The next generation Town Cars were a very handsome evolution of the boxy Town Cars. The later jellybean Town Cars were hideous by comparison and I just don't understand how anyone could find them attractive.
Yep! 89 is the last year for me. I don't want any Town Car newer than that.
I've been watching Adam's channel since the early days. This guy is old enough to have been in my thirties when this beautiful Lincoln was made. Truly a beautiful color and I like the styling of this 1980-era rather than the more rounded one that followed. I looked at a two-door in the early eighties and didn't buy it, and wished then that I had. Great channel here!
Thank you very much! I too was disgusted when the 1990 came out. However I think it did get Motor Trends car of the year for some reason.
@@tonyscarcare5657 Being in my mid-sixties and retired I remember these cars well. I did extensive travel on business at the time your Lincoln was around. I remember being horrified at the bloated Caprice when it came out, being so obese that sitting in the driver's seat I couldn't even comfortably use the door armrest! I liked the very first of the aero-style Crown Vics but they toned that down in a hurry. You have a great channel! I'm watching that door repair on the Mercury now...
@@loveisall5520 I'm 54. I remember watching them unload these cars off the truck at the dealer. Thank you very much for watching!
Tony your town car is gorgeous. I particularly love the wire RIMS which irks me when people think they’re wheelcovers. Clearly they aren’t!! Keep her nice and enjoy it. BTW I’ve been doing my own window repairs for years on my fords/Lincoln’s. Years ago those plastic “pins”/bushings weren’t readily available so I improvised. I now have about 20-25 of them got a “deal”. Naturally since I bought them I never had a window fail lolololol. Talk about real “TREAT” take apart the rear windows on a 67-69 Tbird or 69-71 Mark lll (same set up ) to change that vulcanized gear on the sliding rear quarter window! A real time consuming PIA
I really don't like working on those Mark III and Bird Rear windows! I don't understand why they enclosed them.
I always felt these were one of the finest cars Ford ever built. Almost flawless.
Agreed! Thank you very much!
If it wasn't for the warping interior pieces, cracking, etc. it'd be flawless for sure.
Mine doesn't really have any of that.
@@tonyscarcare5657 must be you take great care and pride in the car then 🙂
I just know not to lean on the armrests. And it's always garaged.
Beautiful town car!! My grandmother always drove them. I’d love one like this one, gorgeous man
Thank you very much!
Outstanding Lincoln, thanks for the ride along.
You're welcome! Thank you!
The Trim level and interiors of 1988 and 1989 were the best looking.
I agree!
11:20 yes, the Town Car was light years ahead of the Fleetwood in terms of fit and finish, build quality, NVH, and reliability and probably mpg. Ford really did tons of homework and quality controls on this generation Town Car. The new body 90 was even better. Of course I feel that the Cadillac was a far more stylish car and better looks.
I'm told by a guy that worked for and retired from a Cadillac dealer that they lost so many customers to these Town Cars. He even has one now himself.
The Fleetwood was beautiful.. But the Town car was right there in looks also..
Absolutely Stunning..
Huge loss that ford deleted this fine automobile..
the biggest Achilles' heel is the throttle valve lever grommet. Be sure to replace that grommet with a brass one before the factory plastic one crumbles and will fry the transmission.
Never knew that. Thank You Sir.
That was done the day I bought it 13 years ago! I've known that for years.
You're so right! That lousy plastic grommet caused a lot of smoked aods.
Where exactly is this located at ? I should figure out where and replace mine.
@@ISEEORBS it's holding the cable onto the bottom of the throttle body that goes down to the transmission.
You mention Lincoln Land in Florida. I buy my parts from them for my 1989 Lincoln Town Car Sigureture Series. They are great as well as knowledgeable when it come to the Lincoln's. And they will get back to you to know if they don't have the part.
Yes, wonderful people and great friends! Thank you!
Although it is a smaller car, I can say my 1991 Grand Marquis with the same 302 V8 got excellent mpg on the highway.
☝️👍.
For sure!
Tony, beautiful car, I’m not in favor of Adam’s comparison to the Cadillac styling over the Lincoln. I’m 64 and the Cadillacs were stodgy “old peoples cars” even when I was a kid compared to Lincoln. My old man opinion5 of course 😂, but I always loved the Ford/Mercury/Lincoln styling.
Thank you.....me too! They were clearly built better.
Awesome car. I had an '86 Signature Series, charcoal grey with charcoal grey velour interior. The car was serene to drive, the ultimate in comfort, ride & handling, and was virtually indestructible. Basically an army tank in a fancy prom dress. The only problem I ever had with it over 90k miles is the rubbery trim pulling away from the top of the glove box door, which I learned was very common. Cost of ownership was oil changes, one set of rear brake pads, one set of tires and a 79 cent tube of contact cement! Wish I still had it.
Yes, sir! And there's so many people that put them down. They simply don't have a clue.
Glad you were able to have a comfortable luxury ride up to Adam's. I knew he would like that town 🚗. Expect he will find one for his collection. I'm sure looking 😏
Thanks! He sure seemed to like it.
Love the vids. I plan on using you videos on when I fix my rear Windows... someday
If I could not afford my Lincoln Town Car, I would of bought a Grand Marqie.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful car. Classic lines. Love it.
Thank you! It is one fine automobile.
Nice Highway Cruiser
Panther platform cars are bullet proof
It sure is!
1989 was the last year of the old style big starter. 1990 saw the small starter. The 89 and older starter sounds so much better imo...
Agreed!
I would rather have a conventional vent window that swivels. But I'd be happy just to have vent windows in my 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan
I have those in power, too, if you check out my other videos. These are better than nothing.
nice car
Thank you!
Great video. I wish I had kept my 89.
I don't intend to ever sell mine.
Nice car Tony. Thinking I may need one I one comes up in my wheelhouse.
Thank you! You will not be disappointed.
Really pleasant video and ride fellas!👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Great video guys!
Thank you very much!
You 2 are funny!! I discovered your channel from this same video on Adam's channel. Good cross promotion. As a Minnesotan, I love the "subtle" Midwest nice that barely covers up who is on team GM vs. team Ford.
Love to see you're paying attention! 🤣 Thank you very much for watching!
We used to calls them the American Rolls 👌
That's a good way to look at them for sure!
@@tonyscarcare5657 it's funny, this vid is from months ago, but just today I saw someone park near me with an '88 T/C and it wasn't ragged, it actually was a cream puff, had to be garaged, and she parked a mile from the store too lol. I said to her "you know what you have, and cannot replace that baby so easily!"
@@auntbarbara5576 I can't take this car anywhere without someone commenting on it. My parents get the same thing with theirs.
@@tonyscarcare5657 👍
I have always liked these town cars, and got to drive a few of them as rental cars. The tighter steering surely made a difference for me, never liked the Fords due to the slow steering. Tony has those windows going up and down "like butter"!
Thank you, but I've never had to work on any of the windows in this car.
Nice car! And I fucks with Adam and his channel. He knows a lot about cars and seems to be a cool guy!
Adam is so intelligent it's scary!
It’s funny to watch how smoothly it rides. I’ve been driving a ‘17 Jeep Wrangler. It’s almost comical how you get thrown around - the passengers, not so much the driver - on the slightest uneven terrain.
I believe that!
I believe the gas mileage in the mid 20s mpg as I bought a 1989 Ford LTD Crown Vic which routinely averaged 24=26 mpg on the highway.
Yep! Some people simply don't believe me at all, but my family has had 4 of them, and they've all been outstanding.
I'm a GM guy. But I do like land yachts of all brands.
I would kill to get 21-26 mpg in my 1996 Buick Roadmaster sedan. On a good day if I'm trying hard I can get around 15 mpg. But normally it's around 12 mpg. But the LT1 engine and 4L60E transmission are a good combination
I thought those cars got great fuel mileage.
Something wrong then as our tbi 5.7L TRUCK did better mpg.
Cool car i 3 of theme😊
Thank you!
I ment to say 23 kits cool cars
I can believe it said 26mpg. If you just reset it and then got on the highway you could average 26mpg. It isn't really realistic to say it gets that much as at 26 that is basically 100 percent highway driving with no stop in go. In a 2006 Cadillac DTS I can average 30-32mpg if I reset before I get on the highway. Once it is up to speed if you keep your foot on the pedal in the exact ride way you can get 30mpg or so. However realistically my average is 23mpg which I still think is pretty good. 21mpg average in the Lincoln is pretty good. I seem to remember back in the day them getting around 15mpg average.
That car has always gotten outstanding fuel mileage. They all did if you drove them right.
Am I Crazy For Liking Those Old Cars?.
No, you are not. I love them!
Thank You 😊,I Still Would Like One.
If you updated your valve body, it wouldn’t have any noticeable shifts at all. Get one from a 90-92 TC, CV or Marquis.
I've had it 13 years and was driving them way before that. I have no plans or need to change anything about it. I'm used to everything about these cars. Thank you for your input though.
I just bought an 84 town car... White as well. 84k miles. Is there any certain things i should check for or fix as far as maintenance? Any common issues? Thanks
I don't think so man. Just enjoy the crap out of it. Congrats!
I let my 1989 Town Car with 37k on it go last year. I sold it for 5k. I think I could have gotten more..........
You sure could have today!
well I smoke but not in my car, my 88 LTD crown vic has pivoting vent windows they where optional I believe it was also the last year.
Yeah not very many of those were ordered with those but I've definitely seen them with the knob that you turn.
@@tonyscarcare5657 mine don't have the big knob like the older one's just a latch that lock it closed
@@ericheld4382 oh yep I remember that one too.
Tony that have Dual Exhaust
Yes it does.
@@tonyscarcare5657 sounds great, mellow rumble, great car.
@@ericheld4382 thank you!
Those power windows are the easiest to fix I've fixed all of mine and others around town now my 90 I had to send it to het fixed those regulators suck
Those cable regulators in the 90 and up are a joke!
@Tony's Car Care oh yes they are and let me say thays a beautiful town car I love it I hope I come across just 1 more like it.i had an 84 but I had to junk it due to it had an electrical problem I just didn't want to mess with it .enjoy your lincoln sir it's a beuty
@@joccrane thank you! Good luck finding one.
Do you have a set of the wire wheels for sale?
No, I'm sorry, I do not at this time.
@@tonyscarcare5657 ok. Thank you
I love my boxy Crown Victoria, I had Chevrolets of this era and the vic is by far a better car, ride, comfort, driveabilty, now my 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis was probably the worst car I've owned.
Wow that's surprising to hear.
@@tonyscarcare5657 the marquis had 2 intakes replaced, the frame rotted out as did the fuel filler.
@@ericheld4382 yeah those intakes were problematic but I think they improved over the years.
