How does Firenze know about the Philosopher's Stone? Easy. He is on friendly terms with HAGRID! And being smarter than humans, it takes a lot less time than the golden trio for the centaurs to get clues out of him and to figure it out. Why do they need Astronomy? A random astronomy detail in the books that annoys me is that during his OWL Harry mentions Orion. Scotland is in the northern hemisphere. Orion would not be visible from the northern hemisphere in June. lol.
1. The centaurs spend time with Hagrid. It's not really that surprising that they know about the Philosopher's Stone. 2. Can wizards apirate to the moon? Is there a limit to the distance the spell can go?
Apparition becomes more and more dangerous the further you go. Even Voldemort isn't willing to apparate from one country to another when both are in Europe. So Apparating to the moon probably is impossible.
Fun fact: Wizardry originally referred specifically to the practice of astrological magic. Wizards would pick astrologically auspicious times for the casting of certain spells, or making talismans to "store" magic at good times to cast spells during bad times. Unlike witchcraft, wizardry was usually legal and considered a part of medicine. Paracelsus and St. Albert the Great were both wizards. "Astrological days" even spread to folk magic to this day: Love spells on fridays, money spells on thursdays, healing on wednesdays, curses on saturdays, etc.
I have a question or two 1) How do you think the wizarding world wouldve reacted to the moon landing on July 20, 1969? Would they think it's impressive or would they be more like "whatever bro, we can teleport 2) If Trelawney makes a prophecy/prediction, but no one's there to hear it, is it still legit? Like if Albus wasn't in the Hog's Head interviewing her, or if Harry hadn't gone back up to the Div classroom, would she still have gone all raspy?
Still wild to me that they make a bunch of 11-year-olds stay up until midnight (or maybe 1am, if the class starts at midnight?) every week, for the entire year, right in the middle of the week. Even if they don't also give them a morning class the next day, that's got to mess with their sleep pretty badly.
But then they don't have to go to Firenze's divination class at midnight. He gets a special room with dimmed lights, tree's, an enchanted ceiling, to show the stars, and it's on the ground floor, of course because a centaur can't possibly climb one set of stairs easily. Let alone all the way up to the Divination room.
@@shelbeywelsh4926 that's an interesting case and counter argument in itself. If they could give a centaur a magic ceiling with the stars, why bring the students out at midnight for the astronomy classes? They could have given astronomy during the day with a magic ceiling.
Hey thereeee, Can you please make a video explaining the FULL extent of horcruxes? What if you use the death of some who has a horcrux for your own and whose wouldn’t work, would both work…. Anyway, love your stuff and would love to see this as a video
@@curtislindsey1736 Funny enough, they did touch on it with their explanation of the Dark Mark and the origins of the name "Death Eaters". The going theory is that at the very least, cannibalism is involved.
The method of making a horcrux just requires that you tear your soul. Killing someone does this, but I doubt it is the act them dying that does it. I think it is very likely that if you were to torture someone to a breaking point like what was done to the Longbottoms would do it, as would thinking you killed someone without them dying. It seems to me the intent and action upon that intent is what is important as Dumbledore seems fairly sure that it is at least possible Snape killing him wouldn't tear his soul.
I'm sure someone has done a fictitious natal chart for Harry, somewhere, but it is possible that some 7-year transit started in 1990-1991, or even back in 1982, and concluded in 1997. Something that meant Harry's life would be stuck in the same resurrection cycle-- neither can live while the other survives-- until it was over.
I have a Harry Potter theory you might be interested in. Based on the basilisk in the second movie, I think it might not be a snake but instead a legless lizard. My reasoning is that a snakes lower jaw is split in the middle, which allows the mouth to stretch, while the basilisk had a fused lower jawbone, the teeth are different than a venomous snake who has two fangs on top and bottom and even a constrictor has two sets of teeth the basilisk had one set of teeth and is venomous, the basilisk had ear holes while a snakes ears are covered under it's scaly skin, a legless lizard's scales are uniform all around the body as does the basilisk not a snake who has wider scales on its belly allowing it to climb, swim and most importantly slither around without injuring itself, a snake eats large prey whole but the basilisk would need to eat a small giant every other week and most certainly did not have access to that kind of food ever, hagrid would notice animals that big going missing, and a snake doesn't blink or have eyelids instead having a clear scale called a spectacle or eye cap, but the basilisk did have eyelids. It also could be a Wyrm, a legless wingless dragon, but I don't have enough info on wyrms in the Harry Potter universe.
I always assumed hagrid somehow spilled the beans. I can totally imagine him taking to himself or to fang while walking through the forbidden forest, unaware of centaurs standing behind some bushes
The thought going through my head on a re-read of Book 1 when Bane basically says Harry’s supposed to die and not to interfere is basically “you’re right but it’s 6 years too early for that to happen mate. Calm down” XD
Astronomy is defined (by Muggles) as : the study of objects and matter outside the earth's atmosphere and of their physical and chemical properties. Astrology is defined as : the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects. I would argue that what we are seeing in the Wizarding World is a weird combination of both, but would define it as Astrology, rather than Astronomy. Any Astrophysicist that wishes to advance their career will never mention how any planet/stars/etc. make you moody, or unlucky.
"How does Fierenze know about the stone?" Hagrid "got harry ready for school but had to leave him at the train. Dumbledore needed me to help hide the sorcerers stone in hogwarts" fierenze " really?" Hagrid "I should not have said that..."
Man, I've been theorizing about the Harry Potter stuff for over a decade now, have read all the books multiple times, etc... Most of the times SCB upload a new video with a new theory I kinda already know where they're going with it, but this one takes the cake. I never linked the stuff that went on in the forest in book one with what ended up happening in book seven. Hats off, well done guys, I'm impressed.
They need astronomy for herbology and potion-making too. Maybe they only need lunar cycles for that (things are mentioned as needing to happen at the full moon, for example) but I would not be surprised about other uses.
Divination, potions, ancient ruins, etc are all topics in the muggle world too. Potions is science or culinary, ancient ruins is archaeology, and divination is what those of us who read tarot techniques use. Muggles and wizards aren’t so different
While listening to the latest Through The Griffin Door I had the the thought: I wonder if they’ll make a video about the centaur’s predicting Harry’s death when they get to the chapter in the forest? And now I’m realizing I’ve spent way too much time on Carlin Brothers media.
the stuff in the ministry probably isn't there for what they don't know about other planets but what they do know, that would probably freak even wizards out
I always thought Dumbledore’s watch in chapter 1 was similar to Mrs. Weasley’s clock. It shows the current position of people which is why he knows Hagrid is late because Hagrid is one of the 12 hands on his watch
Holy s*** i never made that connection or guessed where the video was going! I think you’re right about this one brothers! It seems as if youre the first to make this connection, as ive never heard talk about it, yet it seems so obvious that we were intended to notice
I was under the impression that astronomy would be mandatory for potions as well-like how the Polyjuice potion must be brewed for a month, and like one of the ingredients needs to be picked at night during a full moon or something. And I would hazard a guess that certain spells might be affected by the planets or space too. Can you imagine if there was a day when something like Accio or Point Me spell would be extra effective? Or at certain hours of the day? I imagine that’s what arithomancy is for too, learning how to augment magic based on the math of magic. But besides this…I would like to see a “what-if” theory video about if Firenze did not save Harry(or basically, if Voldemort had successfully killed Harry), thus removing Harry as a Horcrux first.
I think being stabbed in the back by someone he thought was a friend was about Ron’s behavior between the announcing of the champions and the first task. But Harry did drown in his predictions too, I think, which is second task.
Regarding the list of innocents who were killed in the lead-up to the second wizarding war, I would have to say it’s a bit of a stretch to call Barty Crouch Senior innocent, considering that he willingly, albeit probably unknowingly, sent Sirius Black to prison for a crime he didn’t actually commit thereby making Sirius a bit more innocent than Crouch, in comparison.
I would argue Barty Crouch Senior is partially responsible for Voldemort's return. Voldemort relied very heavily on Barty Crouch Junior who would not have joined up with the death-eaters had he had a better relationship with his own father. His intense loyalty to Voldemort stems from seeing him as a father figure who would give him the attention and affirmation that he was desperate for. While I am sure Voldemort would have returned at some point without the help of Barty Crouch Junior, the timing and circumstances would probably have been different.
Harry still had the blood protection so maybe he it was always his fate to survive that night in his 1st year and be killed by Voldemort in his 7th year
The stone was definitely moved from Gringotts to Hogwarts, but whether it was done "secretly" is debatable. It was Hagrid who was tasked with its transportation. The same Hagrid who was tricked into telling a total stranger how to get past Fluffy and later revealed the same "secret" to 3 first-year students. The centaurs (and Firenze in particular) are neither strangers to him, nor young students. They certainly could have gotten that piece of information from their stargazing, but there is a much more down-to-earth explanation: Hagrid simply spilled the beans. Astronomy also seeps into other disciplines in the books. Granted, it's mostly the lunar cycle we read the most about, but it's not a big stretch to apply it on other planetary movements. The notorious connection between full moon and lycanthropy, preparation of certain potions, best time to harvest certain herbs etc. Understanding of astronomy seems to be needed in a lot of other subjects, even if it has limited practical application on its own.
The herbology is an interesting one. There's a spiritual farming branch, bio dynamic farming and they sometimes have an astronomy/astrology calendar for farming.
*(**4:02**)* Yeah, it's not like schools in the real world have lots of mandatory subjects that provide next to _zero_ real world application for the average student (unless they happen to get a job involving that subject), such as chemistry, art, gym, shop, math, geography, music, biology...
I love it when a video like this comes up, because I had also noticed some of that. Albeit not as much and as thoroughly as you guys😊 But I had noticed a lot of the same things as you have outlined in the video, I just hadn't put it all together like you have. Now Dumbledore's watch makes more sense to me😁 Love you guys and all your content!😊
Now I understand why professor trelawny hates frenzy, it's not the fact that he's different It's the fact that he has a different brand of fortune-telling that's better than hers.
I’m so glad you made this theory! I am rereading Harry Potter again, now that I’m older, and when I got to this part my first thought was you guys. It’s so clear that they knew he had to die by Voldemort’s hand.
honestly i think the reason the centaurs dont act isnt just because of the wait for the right moment. i think its because astronomy is subject to change. while the divination prophecies are absolute. it would also back what bane is afraid of. acting can change the outcome if the actions are influenced by astronomy. if they acted to save harry and help the fight and was able to repel voldy then the outcome of the war would have been different maybe this leads to potters death in a different forest without the aid that he had at hogwarts and thus all of the horcuxs cant be destroyed
Ben, Jay .... Bros.... What you neglect to point out is the importance of knowing the alignment big the planets. Why? Apparition.😮 Apparition is the magical ability to instantaneous move from one point to another in time & space. A person is literally moving into a different dimension then returning at a chosen destination; sometimes miles/kms away. And if not done exactly right, on could return with pieces of the body missing or not at all.
Ron and Harry's "predictions" are right in other ways too. "Stabbed in the back bu someone you thought was a friend" could mean Ron thinking Harry is a Liar and ghosting him when he's preparing for the first task
To be fair, telling Snape to keep an eye on Quirrell makes sense from the perspective that Riddle had cursed the Defense against the Dark Arts position.
The idea that the future is written in the stars also interestingly makes the Cursed Child and Pottermore articles about time-changing Time-Turners much more problematic than they already were. If the future is written in the stars and your Time-Turner isn't changing the stars, it shouldn't be able to contradict what the stars are foretelling. (Unless it's a self-correcting universe sort of model where a change to time will ultimately be "erased" by various actions that will set the universe back on its initial path even if it takes some time to get there.)
I figured that Through The Griffin Door would be a 'book club' style discussion of each chapter, not actually reading the book; but do you realize how confusing it is liable to be some when you describe the podcast as "Each week we are reading another chapter and then..."?
I think astronomy is useful for things we don't hear about. More complex and ritual like magic. Like, creating a lake full of infery is maybe only possible when Mars and Pluto are conjunct in Scorpio, during a solar eclipse. On the more muggle world level; there's a astronomy/astrology calendar out for farming; when are good times to do certain farming activities. The moon cycles and other planets cycles influences plant growth. So in the magical world, this would be even more the case for herbology.
Ill be honest, I always figured that astronomy was like foundstion work for the hogwarts students, a couple times its mentioned that the movement of the moon or something affects potion ingredients and its implied it might affect spells too, so i always thought that they had to take astronomy to learn how the movements of the heavens affected everything which has some precedence in historical beliefs of magic. That way the necessaryness of it made sense to me.
Centaurs and other humanoids are under utilized in Harry Potter. I wouldn’t mind a spin-off that focuses on a centaur. *Spoilers * My favorite cutscene from Hogwarts Legacy is when the centaur ride to the rescue in the Golden Snidget mission.

The fact that you used the Jennifer Lawrence “ what do you mean” made my year. That’s my favorite episode of Hot ones ever, followed by Shia lebouf.
anytime my friend
I have a question or two
1) How do you think the wizarding world wouldve reacted to the moon landing on July 20, 1969? Would they think it's impressive or would they be more like "whatever bro, we can teleport
2) If Trelawney makes a prophecy/prediction, but no one's there to hear it, is it still legit?
Hey thereeee,
Can you please make a video explaining the FULL extent of horcruxes? What if you use the death of some who has a horcrux for your own and whose wouldn’t work, would both work….
Anyway, love your stuff and would love to see this as a video
This is a great idea! It may be a little dark but it'd be cool if they could includle the theory on the spell to make a horcrux.
@jjquinn295 but wouldn't the fact that Bellatrix and Barty Jr don't have a horcrux kinda eliminate the torture making one idea?
you probably have to willingly make a horcrux, so bellatrix just didnt@@captainspaulding5963
Wow the foreshadowing in book one is crazyyy, the parallels of the forbidden forest scene gave me chills
Astrology is defined as
: the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects. I would argue that what we are seeing in the Wizarding World is a weird combination of both, but would define it as Astrology, rather than Astronomy. Any Astrophysicist that wishes to advance their career will never mention how any planet/stars/etc. make you moody, or unlucky.
An astrophysicist will admit astronomy grew out of astrology, the same way a chemist will admit chemistry grew out of alchemy
THIS! People don't understand this or WHY the divination/mysticism was taken out of the sciences that remained. @@geraldgrenier8132
"How does Fierenze know about the stone?"
Hagrid "got harry ready for school but had to leave him at the train. Dumbledore needed me to help hide the sorcerers stone in hogwarts"
fierenze " really?"
Hagrid "I should not have said that..."
Very interesting. I haven't ever noticed that.
Thank you for these kinds of videos!
If nothing else, you always can count on Ron to bring the "high-brow Uranus" humor.
And now I’m realizing I’ve spent way too much time on Carlin Brothers media.
the stuff in the ministry probably isn't there for what they don't know about other planets but what they do know, that would probably freak even wizards out
this was one of the most enjoyable HP theories videos
a beautifully hidden gem
I always thought Dumbledore’s watch in chapter 1 was similar to Mrs. Weasley’s clock. It shows the current position of people which is why he knows Hagrid is late because Hagrid is one of the 12 hands on his watch
*trying to type day on trick keyboard*
Trick keyboard: IT'S GONNA BE MAY
Big round of applause to Aurora sinistra who has to deal with being the astronamy teacher
I like the -planets influence magic- part. I was thinking the same
I think being stabbed in the back by someone he thought was a friend was about Ron’s behavior between the announcing of the champions and the first task.
While I am sure Voldemort would have returned at some point without the help of Barty Crouch Junior, the timing and circumstances would probably have been different.
now we need a What If Firenze hadn't saved Harry from Voldemort/Quirrel
Thanks for the vids guys! I always enjoy unwinding to them in my evenings ❤ as a potter head I love all your continued theories!
Now Dumbledore's watch makes more sense to me😁
Love you guys and all your content!😊
The amount of detail and research astonishes me and fills me with joy sooo smart lol
I'm mind blown, I had never thought to connect everything like that! Amazing!
Now I understand why professor trelawny hates frenzy, it's not the fact that he's different It's the fact that he has a different brand of fortune-telling that's better than hers.
“Mars is bright tonight”
I’m so glad you made this theory! I am rereading Harry Potter again, now that I’m older, and when I got to this part my first thought was you guys. It’s so clear that they knew he had to die by Voldemort’s hand.
I like that part about all the key players being in the right place six years early, even if I think it was completely coincidence.
Loving the addition of Harry to the thumpnail guys 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wow, this is one of your coolest theories! Very impressive 🎉
honestly i think the reason the centaurs dont act isnt just because of the wait for the right moment. i think its because astronomy is subject to change. while the divination prophecies are absolute. it would also back what bane is afraid of. acting can change the outcome if the actions are influenced by astronomy. if they acted to save harry and help the fight and was able to repel voldy then the outcome of the war would have been different maybe this leads to potters death in a different forest without the aid that he had at hogwarts and thus all of the horcuxs cant be destroyed
Now I need y'all to do a deep dive into the study of ancient runes!!
You guys continue to amaze me. ✨️
Wow, of all videos on RUclips nitpicking the series apart after all this time, this was actually really fascinating to think back on
Heyyy brother! Always look forward to your videos!
Maybe Hagrid told Firenze about the Stone...
He shouldn't have said that...😂
Ben, Jay .... Bros....
What you neglect to point out is the importance of knowing the alignment big the planets. Why? Apparition.😮
Apparition is the magical ability to instantaneous move from one point to another in time & space. A person is literally moving into a different dimension then returning at a chosen destination; sometimes miles/kms away. And if not done exactly right, on could return with pieces of the body missing or not at all.
man your theories just make my day.... 😍
Love the Dr Who reference! A sign we might be getting Who content???? I hope so 😀
Centaurs are definitely the best prophets
Ron and Harry's "predictions" are right in other ways too. "Stabbed in the back bu someone you thought was a friend" could mean Ron thinking Harry is a Liar and ghosting him when he's preparing for the first task
5:18 we played Oblivion, we know what an Orrery is
To be fair, telling Snape to keep an eye on Quirrell makes sense from the perspective that Riddle had cursed the Defense against the Dark Arts position.
"Mars is bright tonight."
You guys always make My day 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
11:31 I'm pretty sure that's just a normal watch to a wizard; didn't Harry get one for his 17th birthday or something?
Maybe I'm wrong but isn't astronomy useful for potions and possibly other subjects?
I’m just happy to be watching this less than 25 minutes after it was posted :)
!!BEN and J!!! -Surely it is that exact SAME CLEARING in The Forbidden Forest that he finally allows Voldermort to perform Avada Kedavra As Well!!!!
J, if you want to talk about survivor, go ahead. I'm here for it!!!
It doesn’t “beg” the question.. it “RAISES” the question
5:48 it's pronounced *your-a-nus* ver here in the UK
Love your videos
Ill be honest, I always figured that astronomy was like foundstion work for the hogwarts students, a couple times its mentioned that the movement of the moon or something affects potion ingredients and its implied it might affect spells too, so i always thought that they had to take astronomy to learn how the movements of the heavens affected everything which has some precedence in historical beliefs of magic. That way the necessaryness of it made sense to me.
You'll know WHAT but not WHEN, interesting
Centaurs and other humanoids are under utilized in Harry Potter. I wouldn’t mind a spin-off that focuses on a centaur.
*Spoilers * My favorite cutscene from Hogwarts Legacy is when the centaur ride to the rescue in the Golden Snidget mission.
Day 9 of asking scb why none of the portraits in book 2 reported the basilisk! I love y'all's channel!!!!
Better help is a multi level marketing scam. If you’re looking for a therapist, find one who takes your health insurance - you can try asking a doctor to give you a recommendation or advice on how to find a therapist. RUclips is not really the place to go for medical provider referrals.
😭😭😭 J's shirt is heartbreaking and I kinda want it!
You're the Best guys❤❤❤
