Theres absolutely no time for a teenager to sleep 8-9 hours. Not with school, homework, sports, and jobs. Not to mention the teens that cant drive yet and have to wake up earlier for buses.
I disagree. I'm a very busy person (cross country, musical, student council, babysitting, honors classes) but I make sleep a priority and always get at least 8 hours a night.

There has actually been some research done exploring the negative effects of sleep deprivation on teenagers during their high school years. Teens need an average of 9-10ish hours of full REM sleep in order to have fully functional brain processes throughout the day, hence why a LOT of teens sleep through some classes even though they slept around 6-8 hours.

Maybe you could change something in your habits, but you can't change if you don't know what you need to change... I sleep 8-9 hours and drink water more than I drink soda. I also don't smoke or drink. Maybe that's why adults, kids, and teens thought I was seventeen for the last 11 years.
i had this problem at the start of the academic year, i fell asleep like at 3am and then woke up at 7:40am, what i figured out works is turn off all electronics, turn the lights off and just lie in bed and try not to sleep then you'll fall asleep
Well some ppl have conditions or mental illnesses that won't allow them to sleep normally. Like if you have depression you can find yourself staying up all night fighting your demons and losing causing you to stay up even longer until you feel satisfied which also causes for cutting
whatever I'd rather die in my sleep than experience it tbh. and Starla Edge some people with conditions/mental illness can actually sleep *more* as well. Like if you don't see the point in living you might stay in bed all day instead of going outside, or if you just want to escape your own thoughts sleep seems like the only way out (apart from suicide).
I don't understand you people, I LOVE sleep! I used to have insomnia and I finally got over it and now all I ever want to do is just sleep. I can sleep 12 hours if given the oppurtunity, but usually I only land up get 8-10 hours :'(

I have a love hate relationship with sleep, I feel better sleeping only 4-5 hours then a full 8-9 hours. If given the opportunity my body will sleep for 16 hours even though Im not sleep deprived and have gotten around 6-8 hours of sleep every night for a week.
considering i haven't worked or gone to school in months, i've been clocking like 10 hours at least a night. i have noticed that i look younger than i did a few months ago. i also have other bad habits which make you age faster, so sleep obviously plays a huge role in how you look day-to-day. i'd say this video is spot-on.
Haha no, sometimes I can get 6 hours of quality sleep and that's only a nap! I once spent my entire day that I was at home, so after 3pm, sleeping and only got up for 2 hours before I went back to bed and slept till the morning.

If there were no consequences or requirements, I would just never sleep - it's a waste of valuable time, and there are so many things to be done. I force myself to sleep every night, but can only get four hours due to there being too many things to do. So much time wasted asleep over the years.

Electronics, work, and school (I.e. Society) plays a large role. For example, during the school year I get in average of 4 hours. That mainly is the case due to my amount of homework and my procrastination of electronics. Sleep deprivation sucks.
I hate sleeping.... I have chronic fatigue and it's the worst. During the summertime, it used to take me sometimes 4 hours to wake up, then another hour to get out of bed, and I'm only 16. I have to drop my first period class because I can't ever go to it, and it's my favorite class :( (French). I can't go on the French exchange I planned on since May because I wont be better in time by April. It is saddening when my classmates complain of being tired, or because they stayed up really late studying, because I literally have no energy to do ANYTHING when school is over. Pease count your blessings and don't take the simple things for granted.
Waking up at six every morning to get to my zero-hour sucks the life out of me. I'd probably go insane if the local coffee shop didn't exist. On the bright side, summers seem more pleasant in contrast.
I doubt if thats a permanent thing. Everybody gets chronic fatigue at some point in their lives, most don't recognize it. I had that for about like... a year. I was just always tired. I decided to fight it by forcing my body to adapt to an opposite lifestyle. Started working out really heavy every single day. Mostly cycling + hiking but also gym and stuff too. After a few months of daily hard training I was the most energetic person I knew. Even on my off days. It got to the point that I couldn't even hang out with normal people anymore because all they wanted to do was sit around. It's like everyone's in slow motion. Of course I went back to my lazy ways and some fatigue has returned. So I'm training again, and things are getting better. I guess the moral of the story is your body is going to react to whatever kind of environment you put it in. It's easily changeable :) From my experience anyways... I hope things get better for you!
kevin smith Thank you very much for your story and wishing me well! I wish I could just exercise it away, but my chronic fatigue is actually a part of bigger disorder thing I have. All of my doctors tell me even a little exercise, like walking, would help a lot, but it's hard to overcome the tiredness and other things I go through (mostly tiredness, and a little laziness too, lol!). I'm slowly getting better though! But your story gives me hope so thank you!!!
Reptarsaurus My Brother had chronic fatigue. It was terrible. But then he went to this "miracle treatment" called the lightening process (i think) and now he's all better and is doing sports every day. He was bed ridden for 18 months, then he went to doing extreme sports everyday. Hope this helps!
I would start taking iron, eating healthy, going for jogs to get fresh air, taking vitamins and go tanning. Something tells me you aren't getting enough vitamin C. It takes me an hour to get out of bed, sometimes even more. But that's because I'm lazy as fuck. I'm almost 20. And I sleep constantly. I'm always tired. The only thing that ever makes me feel better is tanning and energy drinks.

I read an old book from the 1950s once that described the ideal way of life to be 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, and 8 hours for hobbies... who has 8 whole hours for hobbies these days when people barely have time for sleep.
I'm 13 and for a very long time now, I've only gotten 5 hours of sleep a night. My dark circles are worse than the ones in the video and I have wrinkles and veins showing on my eyelid and undereyes. Sometimes people ask me if I'm okay and say I look dead :( I've even tried extremely expensive undereyes creams but none of it works for my dark circles
oh dear, i feel you. stop with those creams, i spent more than 200€ on them when i was about your age & had exactly the same problem - they don't work, i literally tried everything. go & see a doctor, i found out that the disease i've got mainly causes my horrible dark circles and the terrible wrinkles. also it's genetical - i'm born with it and i gotta deal with it. i don't know about you but i'd really recommend seeing a doctor to you. it's possible that u just have a lack of some vitamines, but whatever it is - talk to your parents & get professional advice and help. good luck!! xx
I have the same problem. I'm also 13 but I usually get 0-4 1/2 hours of sleep a night during school and 5-8 hours during the summer. I have horrible bags under my eyes. I know how you feel.
+MooLovesRUclips im 13 aswell i i use to get 4 to 5 hours of sleep and i feld exasted and couldnt concentrate in school well so i started turning of my phone earlyer and sceduling my time better and now my goal is to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep during school and trust me you will feel a lot better and have a lot more energy

Best way to restore sleep is exercising at 7am every day. Significantly reduces our cortisol levels ( stress hormone ) All I can say is just try it once! Do some push-ups or leg raises, or even just brisk walking if you're too heavy. Try spending more time standing up if you have a sedentary life style. I'm glad I'm off 2 mg of Flunitrazepam tabs completely & this simple tactic restored my sleep & my low metabolic syndrome. Also your body eliminates toxins via the liver & kidneys. It requires so much energy that it can't be done when we're awake.. Our hormones signal the detoxification hormones like clock work every night between 11:30pm till 1:30 am ( or from 1:30 am to 3:00am I can't remember exactly which one) Lot of science & proof behind it

I know that feeling. I have sleep problems too, it's so fucked up at the moment... I'm tired all day and I get a bad headache when I don't sleep for at least 2 hours at daytime. But at night, I just can't fall asleep. I'm thinking way too much at that point, so I usually go to bed and play on my gameboy for 1 or 2 hours because in some way, I simply don't want to sleep at night... Because I'm not tired and all my "problems" come in to my head. So I usually fall asleep between 3 and 5 AM. ;v; At daytime when I play with my gameboy, I get really sleepy. It's weird.

The sleep that you get is very good but It isnt healthy. Sleeping during the day could actually make you feel more tired than somebody that sleeps at night. Our biological clock was meant to be up during the day. Ofcourse everybody is different, but being asleep during the day lets you do less things. I go to bed at 9 pm and wake up at 9 am..

My mum was in an artifical coma for 2 months. After she woke up she looked a lot younger!! Not only bc she slept so long but also bc the doctors made sure she was really hydrated! 3 months home she already startend to age again...so sleep and staying hydrated does really help!!!

I'm 21, i don't think the wrinkles make the people in this video look "Ugly" i think they all still look good or the same just in a different unique way. Old is still good. It's not a bad thing. I don't know why people are so fearful to look old? I think it's because society, mainly the young people such as in this video react the way they do in this video towards ageing, negatively. Beauty is taught in the wrong way, it discriminates. It's not like people actually have the choice to make sure they get sleep when people are slaved into working unhealthy amounts of hours a day. THAT'S what ages people. Depresses people and gives people a wide range of illnesses.

haha. if you are 14 you know that everyone has a bit of pimples at their puberty? also if you already know that, if you clean your face too much because of you think you dont clean it enought. im 14 myself too and i went to skin cleaning. the woman there said that i clean my face too much. she said that a normal skin cleaning gel or wash and some oil less moisturizer is enought. you dont need to have super quality just market products are enough. also she said that when your doctor or someone else who knows about these things havent said that u have acne do not use acne products. that will just worse your skin. its not about sleep probably. yeah of course it is if you dont get sleep at all (i mean like 1-4hrs).

I believe that scientists were wrong when they came up with the "fact" that everyone NEEDS 7-8+ hours of sleep to be healthy and well-rested. I can't sleep for that long or else I get extremely fatigued. I only need 3-5 hours to be well-rested. I think it's different for everyone. And it will most likely change as you age, so don't get too used to anything either.
I hate the feeling of being tired and going to sleep (especially when I'm not tired), and the horrible feeling of waking up (no matter now many hours I got). That, and sleeping just takes too much time DX But sleeping in general feels great. XD

If you're young and also dealing with this, just know that you are not alone. But also, if you are having trouble falling asleep, ask your doctor about some sleep pills like melatonin. 8-9 hours a day is generally heathy, any less or more isn't necessary for your body and if you are feeling as though it IS necessary then it's likely there is an imbalance in your body. But that's what I've heard anyway Cx
I started getting only like 7-5 hours of sleep when I was 12, and now I'm 16 and my sleeping habits are only getting worse. I sleep, like, 6-4 hours and 7 when I'm REALLY tired. I just... find sleep really useless.
I normally have 1 > 2 hours of sleep, and not because I can't fall asleep, that is rarely the case. It's just that's all the sleep I need. I get super cheery with 3 > 4 hours, feel like I've been in heaven if it was at 5 hours, and at anymore than that I'm the most cheerful person in the galaxy. No one else in my family really shows this trait, my mother NEEDS a lot of sleeps and needs to have a ton of coffee. My brother stays up all night, but he gets tired. My dad? Yeah, he NEEDS his sleep. I've never met someone similar, for an example, I went to sleep at 5.00am today, and woke up at 7.00am today, which, I guess is a good thing so I'm not whining. As for when I'm sick, I like to lay in bed and toss and turn, but the sleeping schedule normally becomes 3 or so hours in pockets, so I dose of for 40 minutes, then again for 15 and so on and so forth. I don't have trouble sleeping, it normally takes me about 20 minutes, maximum, to get some sleep. My tongue has never touched coffee before, nor have I ever pumped myself up on some sort drink / food to keep myself up at night. My face doesn't look anything like most people's, eye-bags are minimum if present, my hair is soft and light brown, and extremely soft, and my skin (at most on my face) is extremely smooth, so I doubt it's having a negative side effect on me. Just for a little comparison, the average person my age gets 7 hours more sleep then me on average. My sleeping schedule is as follows; Day Slept > Day Awoken | Hours Monday > Tuesday | 3 hours Tuesday > Wednesday | 1 or 2 hours Wednesday > Thursday | 2 hours Thursday > Friday | 1 1/2 hours Friday > Saturday | 2 hours Saturday > Sunday | 1 hour Sunday > Monday | 1 1/2 hours Of course, that is only rough and from my memories, so give or take. I love genetics. xD
You're SO lucky! No matter how long I sleep, it is impossible for me to feel "energized." Over the summer I would sleep 13+ hours and always be tired. You're sooooooooooo lucky!

You're probably really good at timing your sleep cycles then. Sleep cycles last around 90 min each, and when you wake up after one is done, you'll feel sooooo refreshed. The reason why people are groggy when they wake up, even when sleeping for 8 hours is because they wake up during a sleep cycle. Typically you need 5-6 of the sleep cycles, I am good with 4-5. A great way to time these is trying to go to sleepyti.me.com and either typing in when you are going to try to fall asleep or when you are going to wake up to see what times need to be where.

I'm pretty sure more than 30% are sleep deprived lol Everyone I know stays up hella late, I only recently started getting 7-8 hours of sleep and I feel WAY better. My face has a glow/spark to it. If you get good sleep you could risk a day or two of no sleep but just try not to do it in a row.

I have a love hate relationship with sleep, I feel better sleeping only 4-5 hours then a full 8-9 hours. If given the opportunity my body will sleep for 16 hours even though Im not sleep deprived and have gotten around 6-8 hours of sleep every night for a week.

considering i haven't worked or gone to school in months, i've been clocking like 10 hours at least a night. i have noticed that i look younger than i did a few months ago. i also have other bad habits which make you age faster, so sleep obviously plays a huge role in how you look day-to-day. i'd say this video is spot-on.

Electronics, work, and school (I.e. Society) plays a large role. For example, during the school year I get in average of 4 hours. That mainly is the case due to my amount of homework and my procrastination of electronics. Sleep deprivation sucks.

I hate sleeping.... I have chronic fatigue and it's the worst. During the summertime, it used to take me sometimes 4 hours to wake up, then another hour to get out of bed, and I'm only 16. I have to drop my first period class because I can't ever go to it, and it's my favorite class :( (French). I can't go on the French exchange I planned on since May because I wont be better in time by April. It is saddening when my classmates complain of being tired, or because they stayed up really late studying, because I literally have no energy to do ANYTHING when school is over. Pease count your blessings and don't take the simple things for granted.
Waking up at six every morning to get to my zero-hour sucks the life out of me. I'd probably go insane if the local coffee shop didn't exist. On the bright side, summers seem more pleasant in contrast.
I doubt if thats a permanent thing. Everybody gets chronic fatigue at some point in their lives, most don't recognize it. I had that for about like... a year. I was just always tired. I decided to fight it by forcing my body to adapt to an opposite lifestyle. Started working out really heavy every single day. Mostly cycling + hiking but also gym and stuff too. After a few months of daily hard training I was the most energetic person I knew. Even on my off days. It got to the point that I couldn't even hang out with normal people anymore because all they wanted to do was sit around. It's like everyone's in slow motion.
Of course I went back to my lazy ways and some fatigue has returned. So I'm training again, and things are getting better.
I guess the moral of the story is your body is going to react to whatever kind of environment you put it in. It's easily changeable :) From my experience anyways... I hope things get better for you!

All of my doctors tell me even a little exercise, like walking, would help a lot, but it's hard to overcome the tiredness and other things I go through (mostly tiredness, and a little laziness too, lol!). I'm slowly getting better though! But your story gives me hope so thank you!!!
Reptarsaurus My Brother had chronic fatigue. It was terrible. But then he went to this "miracle treatment" called the lightening process (i think) and now he's all better and is doing sports every day. He was bed ridden for 18 months, then he went to doing extreme sports everyday. Hope this helps!
I would start taking iron, eating healthy, going for jogs to get fresh air, taking vitamins and go tanning. Something tells me you aren't getting enough vitamin C. It takes me an hour to get out of bed, sometimes even more. But that's because I'm lazy as fuck. I'm almost 20. And I sleep constantly. I'm always tired. The only thing that ever makes me feel better is tanning and energy drinks.

I read an old book from the 1950s once that described the ideal way of life to be 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, and 8 hours for hobbies... who has 8 whole hours for hobbies these days when people barely have time for sleep.
I'm 13 and for a very long time now, I've only gotten 5 hours of sleep a night. My dark circles are worse than the ones in the video and I have wrinkles and veins showing on my eyelid and undereyes. Sometimes people ask me if I'm okay and say I look dead :( I've even tried extremely expensive undereyes creams but none of it works for my dark circles
oh dear, i feel you. stop with those creams, i spent more than 200€ on them when i was about your age & had exactly the same problem - they don't work, i literally tried everything. go & see a doctor, i found out that the disease i've got mainly causes my horrible dark circles and the terrible wrinkles. also it's genetical - i'm born with it and i gotta deal with it. i don't know about you but i'd really recommend seeing a doctor to you. it's possible that u just have a lack of some vitamines, but whatever it is - talk to your parents & get professional advice and help. good luck!! xx

All I can say is just try it once! Do some push-ups or leg raises, or even just brisk walking if you're too heavy. Try spending more time standing up if you have a sedentary life style. I'm glad I'm off 2 mg of Flunitrazepam tabs completely & this simple tactic restored my sleep & my low metabolic syndrome. Also your body eliminates toxins via the liver & kidneys. It requires so much energy that it can't be done when we're awake..

But at night, I just can't fall asleep. I'm thinking way too much at that point, so I usually go to bed and play on my gameboy for 1 or 2 hours because in some way, I simply don't want to sleep at night... Because I'm not tired and all my "problems" come in to my head. So I usually fall asleep between 3 and 5 AM. ;v; At daytime when I play with my gameboy, I get really sleepy. It's weird.

The sleep that you get is very good but It isnt healthy. Sleeping during the day could actually make you feel more tired than somebody that sleeps at night. Our biological clock was meant to be up during the day. Ofcourse everybody is different, but being asleep during the day lets you do less things. I go to bed at 9 pm and wake up at 9 am..

My mum was in an artifical coma for 2 months. After she woke up she looked a lot younger!! Not only bc she slept so long but also bc the doctors made sure she was really hydrated! 3 months home she already startend to age again...so sleep and staying hydrated does really help!!!

I'm 21, i don't think the wrinkles make the people in this video look "Ugly" i think they all still look good or the same just in a different unique way. Old is still good. It's not a bad thing. I don't know why people are so fearful to look old? I think it's because society, mainly the young people such as in this video react the way they do in this video towards ageing, negatively. Beauty is taught in the wrong way, it discriminates. It's not like people actually have the choice to make sure they get sleep when people are slaved into working unhealthy amounts of hours a day. haha. if you are 14 you know that everyone has a bit of pimples at their puberty? also if you already know that, if you clean your face too much because of you think you dont clean it enought. im 14 myself too and i went to skin cleaning. the woman there said that i clean my face too much. she said that a normal skin cleaning gel or wash and some oil less moisturizer is enought. you dont need to have super quality just market products are enough. also she said that when your doctor or someone else who knows about these things havent said that u have acne do not use acne products. that will just worse your skin.

I believe that scientists were wrong when they came up with the "fact" that everyone NEEDS 7-8+ hours of sleep to be healthy and well-rested. I can't sleep for that long or else I get extremely fatigued. I only need 3-5 hours to be well-rested. I think it's different for everyone. And it will most likely change as you age, so don't get too used to anything either.
During school it can vary from 4 hours to 6 hours. A barely healthy level at my age is 8.5.

8-9 hours a day is generally heathy, any less or more isn't necessary for your body and if you are feeling as though it IS necessary then it's likely there is an imbalance in your body.

I started getting only like 7-5 hours of sleep when I was 12, and now I'm 16 and my sleeping habits are only getting worse. I sleep, like, 6-4 hours and 7 when I'm REALLY tired. I just... find sleep really useless.
Actually sleep is one of the most important things in life.
I normally have 1 > 2 hours of sleep, and not because I can't fall asleep, that is rarely the case. It's just that's all the sleep I need. I get super cheery with 3 > 4 hours, feel like I've been in heaven if it was at 5 hours, and at anymore than that I'm the most cheerful person in the galaxy. No one else in my family really shows this trait, my mother NEEDS a lot of sleeps and needs to have a ton of coffee. My brother stays up all night, but he gets tired. My dad? Yeah, he NEEDS his sleep. I've never met someone similar, for an example, I went to sleep at 5.00am today, and woke up at 7.00am today, which, I guess is a good thing so I'm not whining.
As for when I'm sick, I like to lay in bed and toss and turn, but the sleeping schedule normally becomes 3 or so hours in pockets, so I dose of for 40 minutes, then again for 15 and so on and so forth. I don't have trouble sleeping, it normally takes me about 20 minutes, maximum, to get some sleep. My tongue has never touched coffee before, nor have I ever pumped myself up on some sort drink / food to keep myself up at night. My face doesn't look anything like most people's, eye-bags are minimum if present, my hair is soft and light brown, and extremely soft, and my skin (at most on my face) is extremely smooth, so I doubt it's having a negative side effect on me.
Just for a little comparison, the average person my age gets 7 hours more sleep then me on average. My sleeping schedule is as follows;
Day Slept > Day Awoken | Hours
Monday > Tuesday | 3 hours
Tuesday > Wednesday | 1 or 2 hours
Wednesday > Thursday | 2 hours
Thursday > Friday | 1 1/2 hours
Friday > Saturday | 2 hours
Saturday > Sunday | 1 hour
Sunday > Monday | 1 1/2 hours
Of course, that is only rough and from my memories, so give or take. I love genetics. xD
You're SO lucky! No matter how long I sleep, it is impossible for me to feel "energized." Over the summer I would sleep 13+ hours and always be tired. You're sooooooooooo lucky!

That might be because you slept too much. I agree with you though, it doesn't matter how many or few hours i sleep, if I'm not at least somewhat tired I'm having an unusually good day. Kinda depressing when I think about it...
You're probably really good at timing your sleep cycles then. Sleep cycles last around 90 min each, and when you wake up after one is done, you'll feel sooooo refreshed. The reason why people are groggy when they wake up, even when sleeping for 8 hours is because they wake up during a sleep cycle.
Typically you need 5-6 of the sleep cycles, I am good with 4-5.
A great way to time these is trying to go to sleepyti.me.com and either typing in when you are going to try to fall asleep or when you are going to wake up to see what times need to be where.

Everyone I know stays up hella late, I only recently started getting 7-8 hours of sleep and I feel WAY better. My face has a glow/spark to it.
If you get good sleep you could risk a day or two of no sleep but just try not to do it in a row.
