Ok, so the final banding example got completely destroyed by the youtube compression. The technique will still work to reduce banding, especially if the final fine doesn't go under such heavy compression. But as it turns out it can't work miracles. I flew too close to the sun using such a subtle example.
We feel your pain on that one, don't worry 😂
"How to combat RUclips compression as a motion graphicist" would honestly be a really interesting video overall. The clean lines, smooth motion, and heavily stylized colors that are easy to create in After Effects are not particularly compatible with the YT compression algorithm (in my experience anyway)
@@jaretanderson that’s one of my biggest issues with RUclips compression and compression in general. I made a project recently that looked so good with film grain on it in after effects but when rendered out to h264 it just looked terrible, so eventually i just got rid of the grain.
If you render you video as 4k and upload it to youtube as uncompressed as you can (I recommend something like DNxHR SQ) then youtube will give you a better datarate for your videos.
@@jgrover110 ProRes 422HQ works pretty well, too. But yeah, never upload an already-compressed video to YT or any other platform that re-compresses it. I don't know if the "photocopy of a photocopy" analogy works anymore (for people under a certain age, anyway), but any artifacts the initial compression introduced are going to be magnified and worsened by every subsequent re-compression.

Match Grain almost never works out of the box. In order to make grain similar to one on the footage with Match Grain, you should look in every channel one by one and tweak every channel individually. Match Grain has parameters like intensity and size for red, green and blue channels, as well as even settings for shadows, highlights and midtones. It is heavy to render and pretty time-consuming to tweak it just right for every other video, but it is a must-have for compositing. I use it all the time when I do vfx for movies and ads.
My man Ben bringing the noise
Damn that should have been the title! :D
I love using grain but ive never considered there were so many options in using it, awesome tutorial
Hot damn I’m blown away by how proficient you are in after effects and how well you relate information. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!! Subscribed for sure!
Thank you, Ben!
love the detail you go into with all the animations!
That super secret grain effect was incredible! Mind blown as always!
great video!! worth noting that in the solid gray overlay example, blurring the grain but not the image functions less like actual film grain, because film grain *is* the image, not just a byproduct of the film process.
This was very usefull Ben! Especially the part where you explain overlay and the importance of the 50% grey!
Mate, your Channel is a life saver, im a new user to AE, idk what i would do without your tutorials
Excellent video. I've been an AE user for years and this got me thinking of using noise in different ways.
The overlay tip was mind blowing omg, I've always just used overlays randomly and by eye without understanding exactly how it affects footage
Awesome, thank you! I was messing around with premiere bro because I didn't know about the noise filter. Ended up with a grayed out image and a 5gb file for a 5 min video.. You're a lifesaver
Thanks! I like the grain shading technique.
Thanks Ben, you are a gift to us!
08:26 it seems like noise is specifically being creatively used here, and definitely gives you more options from what i'm about to recommend, but when you're not going for something stylish/just want to smooth out the banding in gradients, another option is to increase the Ramp Scatter :)
You are my hero. What an inspiration.
Since i found your videos i have learn so much. Thanks a lot and keeps the videos going ! really enjoy them. Quick, easy to follow. amazing
Thank you Ben!
This is very helpful for a Noise effect lover like me!
Great to be in the company of a fellow Noise lover
I love me some noise Ben, always there to learn new stuff!
Thanks for the support Kuba! :D
really needed this right now thank you ben
wow thank you! im sorta a semi experienced ae user and ive learned a ton from this video!
Thank you dude. You rule!!!
Wow I didnt know this method, awesome work! Keep it up brother💝
Succinct, Informative, funny and beautiful as always Ben. Thank you so much and Keep it Up!
Thank you Ben. Great tutorial!
really noice noise I love it
thank you Ben
Thank you!! Finally i found it!
You're too good. Thanks for sharing your knowledge for free
this is crazy, thanks for the great content!
Like always, thank you ben
Thanks Pedro :D
Yo ive been tackling after effects and for school and i swear every time im thinking "i need to figure out how to do x" youre here with a vid. Thanks dude youre helping me get a degree
THIS IS AWESOME! Thank you
Ben! These are such useful tips dude and you've got a few here I've never considered messing around with. Thank you!
Side note: if I may make the tiiiiiniest suggestion (please don't hate me), I tend to find the voiceovers in your videos extremely quiet and always have to crank the volume to hear it clearly. Your intro + background music + FX sound great, but the people gotta hear the sweet sultry tones of your pipes! Maybe just a bit more compression and gain would do the trick. Just a thought, feel free to ignore and put me on blast. Love ya
This is amazing ben ... Lovely as always.
Thanks so much! Certainly my noisiest yet
i love you man, this is so useful thank you
Thank you!
Ben you are amazing!!! Thank you for this and all the other tutorials that have been so helpful since i started with AE.
Question, do you know some trick to render this with Media Encoder and get away with a result that doesn't get destroyed?
One hundred times thank you!!!
Tutoriales fantásticos :D
when cpmpositing I also love to denoise all of the footage/layers, and then apply noise as adj layer
Awesome! Thanks :) !
Nice Tipps!💯
How do you always know whaz I need for the videos im working on?
Love it!!
lov u bro
Good stuff
amazing
I like It!!!
I wish i can hit like button million times for the banding example
Awesome
You’re super talented man. I watch a lot of your videos, I’d have to say they’re the best tutorials for a motion guy like me.
Fantastic video Ben ! thanks for all the useful tips ! 👍 did you these noise effects for the background of your 2019 project 'Lit' ?
Thanks Grace! oooo, that was some of my first times really using noise, there were absloutely some of technique #1 & I think I may have used some dissolve effects on that too.
proc to the frog staying steadily while ben explaining the tutorial through out the video
probably wanna master/upload tutorials like this in 4k for the higher compression rate in the future
Could u teach us how the clip between 0:30 and 0:40 was made? That looks much cooler.
nice clip
OMG.. Texture! Texture! Texture!
sheeeeeesh!
8:32 increase color depth
Cue track Bring The Noize by M.I.A
how would you call the little cinematic in the last 10s of your intro, i would love to try myself at doing these
Why use overlay for the grey solid instead of linear light ? In my opinion linear light is better when using a the grey solid noise technique, it keeps the white as white and blacks as black while the grey is transparent,. Overlay will blend the shades like multiply or Screen, meaning sometimes the white noise particles won’t show depending on the color below it.
Ben I have a question about resizing blurred text boxes. I haven't been able to find a single thing on this topic yet. Would you be able to help?
cool
Ben likes texture? 1st time learning that... ;) Don't you hate banding!?
noice
We really can't see much of this on mobile, but it's okay, that's just the way it is. Good video nonetheless :)
I don’t have a computer, any mobile apps you think would work for motion graphics and such?
As soon as you added noise to that skull image, youtube was brought to its knees in desperation
i want the "we always label our layers" t-shirt
I always say "We always label our layers" along with Ben but my comps still have Solid1[copy][copy]2
RUclips compression can't show what you're doing. That's also why I try to stay away from grain/noise overall. Won't show on social media and might even create artefacts because of social media compression.
the 50% grey didnt work when i put it in overlay or linear, its still lightening my comp is there any solution to this?
woa
4:46 word so juicy he had to say it twice.😂
👏We 👏Always 👏Label 👏Our 👏Layers
why we use 60% gray?
lol the bitrate immediately dropped at 11:16
when I try to export a video with noise and blur, AE apparently suck the noise effect and just let the blur in the screen... you know why this happens and how can i fix it?
This should have been a 4k video

How to use Noise Creatively - Example 1: Apply the noise to a clip! #creativity.
Jo i just thugt about it he probably use afterefx to edit a video containing afterefx 🤯
Professional: *edits in noise to create an atmosphere & liminal space.*
Me: *Takes photo on DSLR, Instantly deletes it.*
Thanks for the tutorial and OMG I CAN WATCH 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY ON NETFLIX JSHJGHJSKDFHJKSHGSGHSD!!!!!!!!!
11:10 youtube just could’nt handle the noise
I can never have enough noise in my video/photo
why do effects in 2d video editing take so long to render? the gpu shouldnt struggle adding noise to a few million pixels every second
it's so silly how videogames can render near photorealistic worlds 60 times in a second but after effects struggles with a little noise lol
5 Best Ways to Use... Red Color Creatively)
i misread and came here for AUDIO hahahaha
Cade os Brasileiros por aqui?
Fizemos um tutorial top no nosso canal 🔥
oh ok so grain is used to remove banding
First
Congrats!!!
Yeah literally, if you use noise on RUclips it'll destroy your video. Maybe you should reupload this upscaled to like 8K, even if it's just Media Encoder scaling it up, it'll let RUclips give it a higher bitrate to stream if viewers click on 4K or higher. This is also good advice for viewers, even if you have a 1080p monitor streaming in 4K would look much better.
For some people like me, frogs are hard to watch. Please consider 🙏
It wouldn't be very creative if we just copied you lol
Now do how to export a video with grain and not have it be garbled into a mess of ugly artifacts.
More like creative ways to destroy your PC
