  • Two similar carry guns from totally different companies are compared. I get quite a few requests to compare these two popular firearms, side-by-side. Well, here's my take. You know I'm biased, but I try to give you a somewhat objective comparison. Just factor in my Glock bias. :-)

    First handgun I ever shot was my dad's Glock 23 .40 cal. I loved it but I now carry the S&W M&P 40c as my EDC and love it. I've put 5k+ rounds downrange and never had a misfire, stovepipe, failure to feed etc.

    @boltjet135 , 9mm is about .36 caliber; .40 is about .40 caliber. Caliber refers to the diameter of the bore.

    Please revisit the 40cal Glock. Just got my carry permit and was considering the 45 (g30) but when I was at Walmart and saw that 40cal ammo was cheaper than ammo for my 380 I was amazed. We know that ammo prices will rise and fall upon demand (but it's a shame we can't find 22 LR). An ammo price/which cal. your shooting cost concerns) effect is all. We all need a gun we can afford to practice with. Big fan, please keep em coming.

    I enjoyed my Glock since the day I first got it. (G23). I got it new in 1995. in 2010 I wanted a concealed carry pistol and looked into a Glock. I came across the M&P line. After shooting and reviewing and holding and shooting. Sorry Glock. It feels like I am cheating on you. But, This girl is HOT!!!! From the looks and feel of it. I am hooked. I retired my Glock.

    Hickok sir, if I may be so bold... I know this is an older video but I’m rewatching. I agree with you- the M&P has a “better” trigger, but I too shoot the Glock better.
    I believe this is because of the “surprise” effect. Something a state trooper once taught me.
    The M&P trigger is so nice that you know exactly when it is going to break and you “anticipate” (or flinch) the recoil. With the Glock, it’s just a little uncertain exactly when it’s going to go “bang” and this surprise effect eliminates your subconscious to anticipate the recoil. Hence- no flinch.
    I find now that ironically, I’ll shoot much better with mushy triggers because I cannot pinpoint the exact moment they will go bang. And no matter how hard I practice not to flinch, I think even the best in the world still find themselves doing it once in a while.
    Thanks for all the awesome vids!

    So my comments to Hick is I always mod my triggers. The 40c has a rail. The m&p will fit any full size magazine same as the Glocks. I own a few 33 rounds and drums for my Glocks and use em with my Sig ACP with Suppressor. But to me the G27 recoils more than the SW. I work in Fed LE and carry a Sig p229. But imho don't go by a video go and rent or demo one and try before you buy, its the golden rule. And my SW40 has a thumb safety. Just my LE habit as we use to carry HK's. ;)

    One thing you didn't mention is the sights - the Smith's steel sights definitely superior to the Glock's plastic ones. Also a bit better sight radius on the Smith, and the looks are no comparison - Smith hands down. Yeah, I'm biased just like you are, but love all your vids.

      I do agree also, I have owned both and my only gripe with the m&p sights is the front sight on my 40c is a dirt collector because of it being a recessed hole vs the glock front sight post. Every now and then I use a qtip to clean it out from every day carry and it can be a pain.

    Hey Hickok, always love your videos! Long time watcher here. I wanted to add that if I'm not mistaken, the M&P40 will automatically drop the slide when you clam a fresh mag into the weapon when the slide is in the locked back position. Which will speed your reload up just a bit. The Glock does not do this. Just my $0.02

    • @djwhite-out3643
      @djwhite-out3643 9 лет назад

      You are correct sir! I own the M&P40 and that feature is one of my favorite things about this gun, would REALLY be handy when it comes to loading another mag during a gunfight. Some people say its not safe but ehh i disagree, takes a good amount of force to actually make the gun drop the slide in this way so i cant imagine doing it on accident.

    • @gsymoens
      @gsymoens 9 лет назад

      Glocks will do it too it's not a feature it's slamming the mag in too hard and releasing the slide lock

    Absolutely love my M&P 40c, it fits my hand perfectly and lines up naturally on target for me. I found that when shooting the Glock model 27 it was less accurate for me when compared to my M&P 40c. This is exactly opposite of your experience but I believe the root cause is the same, it has to do with the grip angle! Smith & Wesson builds the M&P using the standard 1911angle of 18 degrees where Glock uses a 22 degree angle! Therefore that difference has to be overcome when shooting between these very fine guns.

    • @SoWavvyy

      I carry a Glock 27 and i absolutely love it! I can get 22 round magazines actually manufactured from Glock them selves to capacity isn't a problem! I have owned a M&P Shield 9 and I liked it a lot. I really like the trigger and grip of the Shield Plus 9mm. I would love to get a 40c because, I'm starting to like .40 a lot.

  • @blackdogxx
    @blackdogxx 12 лет назад +1

    I have the M&P .40 with a drop in 9mm barrel/mag/spring+rod. That gives you '2 guns' if you want to shoot both calibers. In 9mm, it's a breeze to shoot; .40 is a pretty hot round for most guys to handle.
    Caution: Get the M&P .40 with night sights when you buy it, if in doubt. Aftermarket installation is difficult for a gunsmith because the stock sights are very tightly installed and hard to remove. Mine is utterly reliable and the grip stock shape adjustment is nice to have..

    The weight seems easy enough to account for, the sights on the M&P are metal and the extra length in the M&P frame along with the dual slide release there is a little more weight in there. That weight does help tame some of the snap in recoil between the two. It really is a toss up between the two guns, feel both in hand and take the one that feels best. Great video comparison.

    If you take the slide off a Glock and grab the front of the frame (by the rail) you can move the frame back and forth slightly. The M&P won't do the same so I suspect the steel frame insert is a bit strong on the M&P. I could be wrong, but those are my observations....

    Excellent comparison! Just an FYI, not sure if someone mentioned it, or not, but the reason for frame weight difference is M&P uses a continuous steel insert for frame's slide rail & components, whereas Glock uses separated components. Not sure about Gen 4s but prior definitely has that for frame's parts. You can see details in pg 2 of their brochure I have to send via PM as comments are not allowing URLs. It's propaganda, but explains weight difference, more steel.

For me they are neck and neck. Right not I am contemplating on going from an M&P 9c to a Glock 23 for more rounds and a slightly better 3 finger grip. I think the glock 23 offers a better 3 finger grip at possibly a slight reduction over the M&P with the extension.

    Horst Wesp was the lead engineer on the Glock design team. Then went to Walther and did the Walther P99. This is very much like John Browning's1911 & later the FN High Power. The P99 was the fix for the supposed flaws in the Glock. S&W partnered with Walther making a licensed copy called the Smith & Wesson SW99. The M&P used a lot of the engineering from the SW99. Trigger and rounded slide are examples. Glock, Sigma & Walther P99 are brothers and the M&P & PPQ are cousins. All related!

    Thanks for this video! I'm deciding between a m&p compact or a SR9c. Think I'm getting the m&p. You always do a great job! keep up the good work!

    Hey Hickok, Loved this video! I've shot both (in 9mm mind you), and I can/will say... I like the Glock better- both are awesome, and if the Glock wasn't available, I'd pick the M&P over anything else out there, but... I can't feel bad about the outcome- Glock wins in my book!! Thanks for you awesome comparision! Take care, Pete D.---

    A long time user of a full size M&P 9 and the Gen 4 G9 and also a carrier of the M&P40c and the 40XDsc I notice that my groupings are consistently low with the M&P40c and the M&P9... very nice, tight, 1-3 inch groups (depending on distance even with multiple shot engagement) but they are about 4 inches south of where my point of aim is. I can only conclude by my OCD self critique that my eyes are utilizing the round white circles around the night jewels instead of the black blade edge of the rear and front sights.Considering the way perspective works, the front circle/jewel naturally looks smaller than the two rear jewels and attempting to center and align them visually puts the front sight blade edge lower than the rear sight... causing lower shots. Fundamentals...focus on the black sights for day shooting...when you're in the dark shooting and can't see the black sights, use the glowing jewels ( although you may or may not shoot low in the dark... at least you will be hitting your target...

    I love the glock 27 its the most accurate gun I have. Its my favorite out of the 37 guns I have. I want the m&p 45 compact. S&w stepped up lately with this style

    Nice, comparison. I picked the M&p 9mm myself. Love the interchangeable palm swells because i have short fingers and a big hand. Also, I love the factory sights and grip angle.

    Fantastic channel. Informative, comedic (“what’s this got to do with the price of eggs?”), & action packed. Your cameraman does a great job as well. Planned on a Glock 23 but found out Mass Law prohibits it; S.W. M&P .40c is only alternative. Thanks for helping us 'new shooters'.

    @NeedWarForPeace Depends on what you are shooting for....For Fun/Target-Bullseye/Home Defense/Conceal Carry? If your main focus is for defensive situations then there is no need to go farther than 10-15yds or so and typically in the 5-7yd range is plenty. If you are just having fun then shoot as far as you want. But yeah, if its's for defensive purposes then there are plenty of ways to make 5-10yd shooting difficult...moving/target moving/from your back/one handed/off handed, etc, etc, etc

    The M&P compact can use full size mags and there is a grip extension available similar to the XD. As somebody else stated there is an ambi thumb safety model which I have. It is very intuative to disengage like a 1911 taking no extra time for the first shot. With as many people reporting negligent discharges when holstering their weapon (getting their clothing caught in the trigger etc) it makes sense to have the safety in my humble opinion.

    Plastic sights on Glock vs. steel S&W would account for the half ounce weight difference of the slides.

    I'm a Glock and S&W M&P owner. I love both, I gotta give them both credit. I'm better with the glock because i've shot it more, and I really do like the standard sights....again because i've trained with em. Had I shot the M&P more I'd be better with it. M&P's advantages are ergonomics (not as much now with glocks 4 gen), and to someone new, the trigger feel. Other than that, I'd say they're about the same, love em both. I'm bias to glocks though, I just do so well with them, and no problems.

    love your videos hickok..I'm fairly new to the handgun scene and I have been shopping for a ccw handgun and I'm really leaning toward the G27. My other considerations are MP9c, Springfield xds9, and the G23. I have held all at the range and all feel good. Just want some expert opinion on which you think might be best suited for carry.
    Keep the videos coming!!

      pbruc brooks I wish smith would create an M&P styled pistol in the same size as the SDVE. SDVE just doesn't float my boat but the price is right and it's a great buy and performer. Just looks bad imho. The market is just screaming for smith to come out with a competitor to the Glock19 or glock23 and smith is not willing to cannabilize market from the SDVE

    Workin on all the licenses right now but been debating either Glock or S&W, this has me leaning more towards the M&Ps. Only because it seems to handle recoil well, shoots more accurately, would seem more durable in harsh conditions, the weight and everything makes it feel like a real gun in your hands. Even the 9mm version is a jaw dropper of just how slim and compact it is, but still a high powered functioning and valuable piece of steel right there. Glocks are definitely quality and well made though. I do want all 10 shots though. Will let you know what I end up with. Thanks Hickok45 👍🏻

    Well after being around a Compact weapon 2 and 1/2 years im finally getting the M&P 40 c in april or may 2014,I learned alot from the Highpoint 9mm (personally I believe the hi-points garbage (my opinion) but its trained me to examine guns and the abilitys of handguns (as a compact they are bulky/heavy and good as a hammer (not a gun) anyhow after taking you're advice and renting the 40c I found it comfortable so thanx for youre training video's

    @Gypscrew Contrary to popular belief the terms clip and magazine are not interchangeable. They are, however, related to ammo and how ammo is ultimately placed into the weapon system. As an analogy you could take a barrel and suppressor. Bullets travel down both and they are both cylindrical with a shaft running through the middle, but each serves a completely different function.

    Mp frame has metal insert to strengthen it. So it won't bent when shooting like a glock. Many glock has issue (FTE, FTF) when shooting with rail mounted laser/light because it affect the way frame bent. No such issue with MP. But mp factory trigger is not as good as glock IMHO
