I am a Veteran from Afghanistan and Iraq. I personally carry concealed the 357 Sig. I know how the 9mm and various other cartridges work on human targets. I have seen a lot of them first hand. Here is a little input, what most people wont tell you about them.
From our perspective, Virtually every pistol round is nearly identical for the most part, with the exception of rounds with rifle like speeds that cause enormous wound channels. They move at a velocity of only 900 to 1200fps, Pretty much right at the speed of sound and no matter what caliber you get, Its limited like that. 45ACP, 9mm, 380, 40SW 38special and even the 22 calibers. All fire about the speed of sound. The practice of using it effectively to incapacitate a violent attacker hyped up on adrenaline is pretty much to dump the entire magazine into the target. Its kinda brutal. Watch how police do it using their 9mm glocks. They have a backup officer, and both of them will shoot an entire mag into the target. Thats just how its done with 9mm. They pull the trigger til the magazine is empty then call an ambulance. Thats the police combat training method of self defense with 9mm. Its also the same for the military with that caliber.
Higher velocity rounds work different. For example rifle rounds. Lets consider the 30-30 rifle. They dont need to be as heavy. They move much faster and that speed translates to a different type of wound channel that is noticeably more effective in combat and in self defense.
We can all agree that a single shot of 30-30 is far more effective at doing the job than a single shot of 9mm.
30-30 ammo is very light. Its normal bullet weight ranges between 125gr and 170gr. While the most common rounds are around 140 grain bullets. Its velocities are in the range of 2000ish feet per second.
357 Sig has one thing that most other pistol bullets out there dont have. Velocity. And a lot of it. This is what separates it from the crowd. While its not literally 30-30 level of power, the 357 sig ammo routinely hits and exceeds 1500+ feet per second using 125 grain bullets, 115gr bullets are over 1700fps. Rifle like speeds. Grizzly Ammo makes a 357 sig with a 90 grain Hollow Point when shot out of a 4 inch barrel will achieve 1900 feet per second at 721 foot pounds of energy. That is indeed within the realm of rifle like velocities, and energy slightly higher than a 10mm.
The 357 sig reacts in ballistics gel like a rifle bullet. Likewise it would in self defense.
The 357 sig is in my opinion, The single most deadly automatic pistol bullet ever made in a Glock automatic frame from the factory. Its a true manstopper every bit equivalent to the 10mm in automatic hand guns which also top out around 600ish foot pounds of energy. The Sig chambered pistols just does it in a smaller frame that normal people can grip.
While it is true that modern police have switched back to the 9mm, we have all heard about it, That doesnt mean its the best for stopping a person that breaks in to your home at night. Police Departments have taken measures to reduce police involved deaths over the years, and the 9mm is good for incapacitating a suspect; ~ and at the same time a quick hospital visit can most of the time save that suspects life. Fewer deaths puts the Police Departments in a better light when it comes to PR. Thats what a lot of it is really about. Keep the police related deaths numbers down.
If you want tiny teeth, buy a 9mm. If you want serious wolf fangs that can take down multiple gunmen shooting up a place you might be stuck in, or maybe 5 men armed with ballbats that break into your home at night, Get a 357 Sig or a 10mm. It just takes less rounds to incapacitate each target. You wont have to reload near as much to do the same job. How prepared for what scenario do you want to be?
If you get mobbed by an ANTIFA crowd beating and kicking you to death with Skateboards and two by fours, will you have the capacity to incapacitate only one of them? Or can you take enough of them down to stop the attack entirely. Then have an extra round in the chamber for that one stupid guy who still wants to whack you with his skateboard even after you have fired your weapon? You decide what you are prepared for.
It kicks harder. Yes. Train with a 9mm. Carry a 357 for protection. Problem solved. When your life is on the line, You will appreciate the extra horsepower behind each round. You wont care if your hand is a little sore afterwards either. Better that than dead.

One round dropped that ANTIFA guy like a sack of potatoes. That round was a 357 Sig round from a conceal carry. It only took one round. Thats the real deal performance of this round in real life scenario that you can examine yourself. Watch the video yourself and see how it works. Its loud, and has a muzzle flash too!

BTW - people on a suicide mission don't go down after one shot. Only the people who want the LEO's to call an ambulance (or want to exit the firefight) go down after one shot.
The exception will be hits to vitals or "T" zone, and that has everything to do with luck/accuracy and less to do with caliber.

I found my buddy’s Glock 357sig a little bit on the high recoil side. On the other hand, afterwards I purchased an Sig Sauer Nightmare full size (1911 stainless steel frame) and the extra weight balanced it beautifully. Recoil seems much less and it is quite an accurate gun.

I owned a Glock 23 and it stayed a .40.Later,I bought a Sig SP 2340 in .40 and soon after got a .357 Sig conversion kit.I didn't see that much difference between them but normally carried it in .40 simply because it cuts a (slightly) bigger hole.A bigger hole to leak from is a good thing IMHO.But really I don't see that much difference and they'll both put a guy down. They're both good and I think it's largely a matter of personal preference. They are both good, effective rounds and certainly superior to a 9x19mm.

My identity is not important or relevent The sheer "speed on impact" of the .357sig will create a wider wound channel, than the bigger .40 caliber. Speed is just as devastating as size and weight. Or at least a huge part of the results that we aspire to achieve. Both rounds are VERY capable. But, ballistically....the .357sig is superior.

I especially like that buy simply buying a couple extra barrels and a few 9mm magazines one can convert a handgun like the S&W M&P .40 to reliably fire .40S&W, .357 Sig AND 9x19mm Parabellum all out of the same pistol!

Then after I had my concealed carry licence I decided to get more knowledge regarding diferent types of pistols. And one day I went to the internet and saw one of you videos, after that I continued to watch a lot of your videos and thats when it happened my interest for shooting grew up so much that I went to the gunshop and bought my very first concealed carry gun a Glock 32 gen3, I love it so much that I went and bought a Glock 27 gen4 (one of my favorites, because of the size and amazing shooting abilities) and lately I got a glock 30s. a while back someone compiled the data of thousands of shootings involving police and federal agents and discovered that the pistol cartridges with the highest 1 shot stop ratio at center mass are the .40 S&W and the .357 magnum
and between those two cartridges you can have a light trigger, fast firing automatic with 15+1 of .40 or a slower firing revolver with a heavy trigger pull and a capacity of 6-8 shots of .357
when it comes to the type of weapon i agree that rifles and shotguns beat revolvers and handguns every day of the week but people trashing the .40S&W really need to pull their head out of their rear ends
another reason to consider .40 is that back during the newtown gun scare my local shops never ran out of .40 S&W

Both my 10 and 12-round Sig Sauer magazines have imprints stamped on them that say: "Sig Sauer .40/.357". I believe that means the mags are Sig Sauer certified to accept both rounds with equal approval by Sig Sauer. My 299 was purchased used, but almost brand new and I believe it was built around 1991 or 92. I bought it at a small gun shop in 2006. The prior owner didn't shoot it much. I doubt it had 500 rounds when I purchased it. To me today, it's a time piece, like an old fine watch. It even says: "SIGARMS INC" on the stainless-steel slider. It's a piece of history. The best part is that I now can change it from a 40 S&W to a .357 Sig in a few minutes while at the range. It's hard to find .357 FMJ target ammo for it. I ordered a few boxes of HPs for it and both rounds work perfectly with the Sig Magazines. I'm keeping this as a timepiece in a similar way that I'm keeping my pre-lunar Omega Speedmaster.

Finally after trying several different brands and types of ammo I sent the 32 back to GLOCK. It came back and the only thing I could see they did was change my magazine followers to number ones. Interesting review. I love the .40 S&W. I have since it first came out I had to have a gun chambered in .40, so I purchased one and I never really felt the need to go to the .357 sig. It is a bit of a designer cartridge, much like a pair of faddy jeans. I am sure it is really good and if I had shot that caliber like most I probably would like it. I have shot so many others like .22lr .38 special .357 mag .40 .44 mag 10 mm 9 mm .480 ruger and several others I have forgotten. Out of all of those I always seem to go back to two calibers that I like the most and that is the .40 and the classic .357 magnum. When I carried a gun I toted my .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel and seven shot cylinder. When it comes down to it , it seems to be a matter of personal preference. I say use the caliber you feel the most comfortable with and you will be happy. Thanks for the review.

I had that same problem, but I used the .357 Sig follower. I think at least with the Gen4 you need to have a G31/32/33 spring, and maybe even an actual .357 Sig mag, not just a different follower.

I remember as a kid, my grandfather carried a Ruger Blackhawk or Redhawk, can't totally recall the exact model but it was in .357 mag. I was 10 and we were hunting, a grizzly wandered into elk camp. I was in the door of the tent facing my grandpa and all the sudden his face went cold, he drew and shot. Those flames out the end of that barrel, I'll never forget that. Two years later I got to carry a .38 special while hunting.
I guess if anyone reads this they'll wanna know, yes bear was killed. Once my grandpa shot my dad and uncles all shot their rifles or pistols. Bout 8 of them. Sounds like overkill but you can't be to careful with a grizzly. I know there's one shot and drop on them but there's also a bunch that have eaten lead like cereal and attacked with a heart shot to hell. When I hunt now I actually just carry a .40 200grain hardcast as a sidearm. Great penetration and you can follow up much quicker than a mag or 10mm. I usually just run into black bear or cougars now anyway but the ability is still there. I highly recommend .40 200 grain hardcast to anyone that has a tough time with grip strength or arthritis. It doesn't make you want to amputate your arm after shooting it. I'm fine with whatever but I convinced my dad and grandpa to make the switch, it's helped them both a lot.

He is spot on about the 357 Sig. Try shooting it during low light conditions. The fireball coming out of the barrel is amazing. If you don't let it intimidate you mentally you will not much know the difference from the 40. The Glock 31 may be easier to shoot than the smaller versions for some people. The bigger and heavier the gun the less felt recoil. You may be thoughtful of over penetration for carry use. The 10 mm with quality rounds will get 18 inches of penetration. That's 2 peoples worth. I imagine the 357 is similar. Novice shooters may want to start off with something else especially women. I personally carried it in a Sig 239 for years and switched over to the Glock 30S which I am very happy with.

That is weird about Glock mags/follower because Sig Sauer (who developed the .357 SIg) does not have that problem. Their .40 mags and .357 mags are the EXACT same mag. There is no .40 mag and .357 mag. They make one mag that says .40/.357 on the mag. I wonder if Glock made a different follower to sell more mags?

I personally believe the mag spring was his issue. Glock uses the same spring in the 27 and 23 mags, which I find strange given they have a difference of 4 rounds. But it makes sense, as he said the rounds were hanging up on the feed ramp. They didn't fully come up to the feed lips before the slide tried feeding the round. I discovered the same issue using 23 mags in my 27.

I've owned and shot my Glock 32 for a few years, and while I still rely on it for EDC, I can definitely understand why .357 SIG is no trendsetting caliber by any means. Cheapest practice rounds I can find bulk are 124 grain FMJ for around 27 cents a round online after shipping with a discount code. Oof. The blast and recoil is simple enough to get over, but like Hickok said, it takes practice and a lot of rounds to stay sharp, and it's dicey-pricey.

I own a Sig 229 in .357 and it came with a .40 Cal barrel as a bonus. In 3 years of experience I agree with most of your thoughts. Ammo cost is a killer w/.357 but good self defense Ammo in any caliber is. I like shooting .357 Sig and use that barrel for carry. I shoot it well and its advantages (real or Imagined) make sense to me. Recoil or muzzle blast have never been noticeable to me. I honestly shoot both rounds and use the 2 barrels equally. I don't believe in practicing with something different than I plan to use.

.357 sig is my favorite round... yes I read all the specs and once you get out of the .32’s and .22’s and into real rounds, the only spec that counts is shot placement. I end up shooting A fair amount of paper and for me, the groups I make with .357sig are astonishing. I don’t shoot as much as hicock45 but I do buy powder by the 8# and primers by the 5K. I’m a 1911 guy but these days I mostly shoot .40S&W only because my wife and I have matching 96’s so thats what we shoot together. Love the .357sig.

He does have his own personal preferences, but I'm sure he understands that each camp has some valid points, but there's no such thing as "best" for everyone in every situation. Sometimes trying to convince someone of that can sometimes be nothing more than a waste of time. I can appreciate the variety that Hickok offers. There's a little something for everybody.

listen to what he is saying. he is making very intelligent points for both calibers. a 357 sig isn`t for everybody, it`s an expensive proposition for most in more ways than 1. for the majority the 40 is all they will ever need. I, personally, don`t care much for the 40. it`s a good defensive round but it is more expensive than a 9 and not much more effective with current premium ammo. If you are willing to forgo the expense and can tolerate the snappy personality of the 357...it does offer some margin of superiority in certain areas. Again...most would never need or realize the difference unless you had used the 9, 40, and 357 extensively. And no, the 45 acp is not a consideration for me. too much recoil, too slow to be reliable in all instances and too little capacity in a handy defensive weapon. Splitting hairs there, I know....but a 45 doesn`t have the range I like

Biggest problem with a Desert Eagle(aside from size and weight)is they don't feed ammo well.I've found this true in any caliber from.357 magnum to .44 magnum.I've never shot it in .50 AE,.41 mag,or 440 Corbon mag.How is the recoil in .50 AE?Considering the size and weight of the gun I would imagine not too much recoil.Did you have any feed problems?Do you feel stopping power is that much more than a .44 mag enough to justify the expensive ammo?In a SHTF scenario I would think spare ammo, mags, and parts would quickly render the gun useless.

The look on the robber's face when he gets hit with 1...priceless. :-) You don't even pack more rounds of 357SIG than a 10mm (0.40cal casing is exact same diameter as 10mm) in a given distance from the feed ramp, down to your pinky. ...a 9mm at least has that advantage over 10mm.

I like it a lot, and will soon buy another Sig in 357 Sig (239 SAS) as a carry piece. I have also started reloading for this caliber, and using the Dillon carbide die set, I have had none of the issues seen on other RUclips vids. You do have to set your headspace and bump the shoulder back as you do on any bottlenecked rifle round, but using a case gauge and checking that with the actual barrel is a piece of cake.

The importance of practice is often downplayed in the caliber wars. I've shot regularly for two years, then had a long hiatus and the shot again for about two years. Shooting in my case means going to the range once a week or every two weeks and putting 50 to 100 rounds down range, this for four years in total with a gap in the middle.
I'm an average shooter, what I mean is I don't learn particularly quickly and it doesn't come naturally, for some it does but not for me.
Now, even after four years as described, I am nowhere near confident in my abilities that I would carry and not have to worry about shooting myself in the leg during the draw. Also I still flinch, jerk the trigger, limp-wrist it and have trouble finding a sight picture in a hurry.
With more expensive ammo (I shoot regular 9x19mm) I would shoot even less.
I don't think it is stressed enough how much time it takes to gain proficiency with a firearm, to a point where the gun becomes an aid rather than a distraction in a critical situation. Caliber in this regard is so trivial compared to practice, that the caliber wars become moot in my opinion (or at least in my case and for people of my skill level).
