  • When a child can can no longer be parented at home, the state steps in. The child becomes the ward of the state, or the corporate parent. These children have done nothing wrong but their health and life outcomes can be dramatically affected. Hannah Kirkbride challenges our assumptions about the care system and challenges us to 'see more' in care experienced people.
Trigger warning: Childhood trauma, experience of care. Hannah is founder and CEO of Career Matters, a social enterprise established to improve access to education, employment and training for all and committed to diversity and inclusion and enabling access to those most removed from traditional pathways into education and employment. Hannah has twenty years’ experience both as a career, skills and apprenticeship practitioner delivering high quality information, advice and guidance support and as a senior leader delivering education, employment, training, skill and career development services. Currently leading the national roll out of the Lived Experience Charter commissioned by NHS England to design.

I was in care until 17 then nothing, stuck in a flat with dodgy 'friends'. No support, in fact the opposite I supported my mother (the one who put me there at age 5) until I couldn't by age 28 I stopped seeing her and trying to help her, 2 years later she passed away and it's destroyed me. I'm now mid 30s with nobody at all. Glad this lady made it most don't.

@jayd856 When I was a kid in the 70s my parents nearly adopted a lad from a "children's home." I was an only child and loved the idea, for some reason it didn't happen. Yet I often think of him and what became of his life.
Despite it being tough, I liked the optimism of this video. I hope you're life improves too.

The conditions in care systems are indeed beyond lacking and often make problems worse for those in the system. The lack of necessary care can create systemic dysfunction for those trapped by these systems. The need for response on a psychological, emotional, educational, social and environmental level providing safety and sustainable living while recognizing and persisting in funding and upholding systems which cushion the disparity and give necessary resources and attention to create change are all vital. Without that response the lives of these children are often forfeit. It is a systemic problem and the thing is that these kids are not career criminals or lost causes in any way. It’s easy to see that with the right care any one of us can become as valuable and essential and healthy as another and it’s not just the people in these systems that need to see and work towards recognizing potential, it’s the entire system. It’s not just the people stuck in these systems who are impacted by them. We all are. Part of putting more effort toward any problem is pointing the problem out and we don’t just need individual actions even though connections are vital to change, we need systems which promote the connections and break down the systems which lead to loss of life and effect all human well being.
My best friend growing up in these systems was eventually lost to them and to this day they were the most intelligent and brilliant person I have ever met. The amount of chaos and destruction that came out of them being stuck in these systems took everything that made them brilliant and special and turned it towards dealing drugs on a large scale. I can’t imagine what she could have been if she had been given the right care and I can’t imagine how much harm could have been avoided for herself and so many others. It wasn’t just her problems that everyone was avoiding or choosing not to see or respond to. The good we can do at any stage never changes and our potential for harm and good never changes. The sooner we change peoples lives the sooner we stop systemic suffering.
