    The knife with no name, name it! It is learning in that too. ;-) (and I do have several customs which gives me little joy) Never used the Garberg, but bought a dozen of the Mora2000 about 99/00, I ended up giving away 8 to friends and colleagues, kept 4 for myself for rather varied tasks, including rust scraping on a diversity of Sollihulls finest 4x4s, one as a field knife for my professional pursuits and two beaters. Still have them but 3 has broken at the tip, after serious abuse. As for my own personal go-to woods knife, I have been using the Fallkniven F1, one of the early ones in ATS34 steel since around 1995 and a second one in VG10, for everything from cleaning fingersized perch, and batoning firewood to grallocking, skinning and butchering Roe deers and Elk. Cant really fault it in anything other than the grip being somewhat on the small side for my rather large hands for wood working. I am finally about to test out the Sissipuukos M95 and M07 and both sizes of the Jakkari Puukos, may very well throw the Garberg into that mix as well, based on your review, even though I hold the Moras to be "the best knifes in the world without any pride in owning".

    nice review Craig. I have never used or owned the the Mora Gargberg my self , but have used other Mora knifes which i enjoy using , so would be very tempted to try the full tang version, this may be a purchase in the future, as the saying goes " you can never have too many knifes" but for now imreasonly happy with current go to knife.
    My go to knife that i use at the minute is a slight larger full tang blade that i made my self , which works surprisingly well for saying it was my first attempt. I normally accompany this with smaller caving knife like the 106 for finer carving work.

    I currently have a few Mora knives; an Eric Frost classic that I was given new in the early 1960s, a carbon Companion, and a “Light my fire” Morakniv. I gave my wife and son Light my Fire knives, fat wood, and drier lint for one Christmas to include in their automobile emergency survival kits. Regarding the leather sheath for the Garberg carbon, I personally wouldn’t use it in the field. Leather can absorb moisture and retain it for a good amount of time, which is bad news for a carbon blade. I would opt for the plastic sheath for rust avoidance. The only knife I have for which I have a leather sheath is my U.S. Marine K-Bar combat knife (a former Marine Infantryman MUST have at least one K-Bar), but I store the knife outside of the sheath to ensure it doesn’t rust. I keep all my carbon knives with a VERY light coat of oil on the blade. I use a vegetable oil on the Companion because I also use it for food prep. I love all my Mora knives.

Thank you SO MUCH for explaining the micro bevel issue from the factory. I’m using the mora garberg carbon on my deployment, not interested in a crowbar with an edge although I love my BK2. I think the garberg will suit my needs well after field testing it. Have to stay the field for extended periods. I’ve really got my eye on a fallkniven f1 pro one day. Great video on a great knife brother 💪. Cheers from Canada.

    I just happened onto your video. I recently purchased a Garberg stainless. It has become one of my favorites. I can really appreciate a review by someone that has obviously used this knife for an extended period of time and become very familiar with it. Very well thought out and informative. I normally take two or three knives when I go into the woods. You the old saying....two is one etc. and this on will be at the top of my list. So far a stropping has broufght the blade right back to shaving sharpness. Great video.

    Great video, as usual. Since getting my Mora Garberg, my L.T. Wright GNS has sat on the shelf, almost completely unused. Nothing against the GNS-I absolutely love the knife (although it does require more maintenance against corrosion), but the Garberg is perfect for what I want out of a knife. I’m never looking back.

    Glad you’ve found a knife happy place Craig! The mora BCB was my first and only “bushcraft” knife for over 2yrs. Recently upgraded to a Broc Horseman. Reason for the upgrade wasn’t due to dissatisfaction with the BCB, it’s a great knife and I love it still. But the horseman is for most of my camps completely doing away with the need for an axe. As a general rule, if it’s wood of a dimension you’d tackle with a Laplander, then you can comfortably and easily process it all the way down to feathers. The horseman is heavier than my BCB, it’s true. But significantly lighter than BCB + Hultafors classic

    Just watching your 13 month review of the Garberg. I'm genuinely surprised that you haven't tried even in preference to the Garberg; the Taraava Jakaaripuukko 110. Under £70 delivered from direct from Finland.one of the hardest on the Rockwell scale, definitely worth a shout. Full tang and superb quality.

      McMillans Bushcraft There are lots of finish knives that are really good. It's like one of their things. It's just Mora made a name for themselves outside, and built up production. I'm thinking about getting a slightly shorter blade, because the long blade actually takes more force to use.

    Another good video. I own and use a Mora Companion and have found it everything you said. I’ve not bought a Garberg due to having other full tang knives. That said, I’ve wondered if there were any differences between the two and you answered that question very well. The areas that I tend to camp have a mix of foliage so the Companion is truly that. I carry a kukri or machete with the Companion (as well as a saw and occasionally I bring a hatchet or forest axe as well). I find that combination covers all the cutting needs I have when In the woods. Thank you again for posting this video and keep up the good work. I’ve enjoyed and learned from your videos.

      @viewsandreviews180 5 лет назад

      The Bushcraft Padawan I live and usually camp in the southeastern USA. The reason for using a machete or kukri has to do with the vines and undergrowth in some of the areas where I camp (they’re great for clearing briars when cutting a trail or clearing a camping spot). This can be especially true on less frequented islands. I’ve also found the kukri to be a good substitute for a hatchet. I first learned of the kukri when I was in the military, the machete we called a “corn knife” and used for farming.

    G'day and almost happy new year to you in the UK. I enjoyed your video alot, it was honest and imformative. I'm stoked to hear that you're happy with your Garberg, I could take an educated guess as to what the other knife may be and I could understand why you would have troubles with it. Stainless has it's advantages but is so much harder to sharpen..
    Now, in regards to your questions at the end I'd like to share my answers. I grew up in Yorkshire, but left around 10 years ago and have lived mainly in Austrilasia ( South east Asia, Australia, Japan, The Phillipines, New Zealand to give a general geographic area. ). I was ' bushcrafting ' in the UK before I left and had the Mora's and usually a Laplander or an Axe for heavy work and this worked great. However, after leaving, I discovered the Malay Parang and I tell you, it changed things for me in a big way. Parangs are so effective in the areas that I've lived that I've done away with the Laplanders or Silky, I never carry an axe and all I ever carry are my Duku Chandong Parang and a small cheap Mora. At current I have the bushcraft black but it hardly does any work. The Parang is my go to 97% of the time. So I really have no reason to buy an expensive knife. Anyways, what I'm saying is, before you think about throwing more money at another knife, look at Parangs...
    Regards

    You can get some Chicago screws to replace those lost rivets, and it will look less tacky that those zip-ties. Then you could use that sheath for another knife, or as a backup. Nice review and the Garberg is on my next to buy list for my kit. Also I have a cheap stainless Mora right now, and it's got that micro bevel that I need to remove after watching this video.

    In response to hot spots on your hand from the handle. You can always use a fine grit sandpaper and smooth out where it is not comfortable for you! I do this with every knife I own! Just makes it custom for me! You should try sanding a little think you will be pleased with the outcome! Stay safe!

    Very glad you are happy with your Garberg, personally I approached bushcraft from a more survival based point of view, and as such I believe that plastics or rubber are a bad handle choice, I have dropped my knives in the camp fire numerous times over the last 50 years but as they all had wood/horn/antler handle slabs there was no damage, also everyones hands are different so I prefer a knife that I can sand or grind the grip to fit my hand, also perhaps a somewhat old fashioned viewpoint but I believe the adage "your knife is your life" as such I prefer a heavier beefier blade that can be used abused and suffer no harm, finally I don't really need a knife for very fine carving because I lack the patience and the inclination, as long as my knife can featherstick, carve a seven notch, baton, and make a decent fireboard and spindle I'm happy with it; you have though almost convinced me that the Garberg is a good knife even though it looks like my mums old veggie peeling knife :)

      The Garberg handle is actually insanely tough, it would not melt, ...well unless you take 5 minutes to fish it out😉. I think you would end up liking the knife its very comfortable esp in cold weather . The grip isn't a rubber style its very tough dense plastic and at first it feels cheesy but after good use it warms up and becomes very comfortable and more grippy.
      I modify knives and add my own wood handles but the Garberg I left it alone, its a knife you never have to worry about breaking.

    Hi Craig! About 2 months ago I bought a Garberg (Stainless Steel) for my brother in law. It is his first bushcraft knife and he is absolutley happy. We already made a kydex sheath, because the multi-mount we get with the knife is .... not so good. :-)
    I am acutally using a LTWK GNS with a scandi grind (also with a homemade kydex sheath) and it is my latest and probably my last knife I use. But we will see.... For the moment I am absolutley fine with it.
    Thank you for your thoughts about the Garberg and have a nice week. By the way: I didn't noticed you got a new microphone. :-)

      I must admit that the park where I was recording was somewhat sheltered, so I'm hoping that I get more value from the microphone when I'm in more wide-open, windy areas.

      I am not sure if you upgrade your sheath yet. I got the plastic one too. What I did is add a Ferro rod and a tube to hold stuff. One on each edge. Then I wrapped it in #36 bank line. I love the set up. I am glade I went that way.

    Thanks Craig. Great video. Explanation for the tang at the butt of the knife. This is so you can make fire with one hand, if you have one arm injured you can still make fire. If the knife is placed at the rear of your knee joint and then kneel down, the knife is held firmly with the butt poking out for you to strike against with your good arm.

    What are your thoughts on stropping knives with scandi grinds? I’ve always stopped all my knives trying never to resharpen them unless they absolutely need be. But some knife producers say you should never strop scandi grinds because it rounds the grind over time instead of keeping the edge perfectly flat

    • @TheBushcraftPadawan
      @TheBushcraftPadawan  2 года назад

      I must admit that I've never really given it much thought if I'm being honest. I was taught to always strop after sharpening and as part of maintenance (by Paul Kirtley) so have always done it that way.

    Allow me to give you a scenario in which you can and should (if you need a fire) use the but end of the knife to strike a ferro rod.
    Hypothetically speaking you're out camping, you brake/dislocate/injure your dominant hand, you need fire for warmth/signal/comfort. You get some flamable materials, you get on your knees, put the tinder on the side of your knee (on the intact arm side), the knife in its sheath, put it in the back of the knee, tinder under it, scrape the fero one handed on the tinder. :p (yes i have seen it done and practiced it myself cuz i'm a hardcore lefthanded)

    I've gone the other way with regard to the blades i use, rather than upgrade, i've downgraded, for many years i used some beautiful and expensive high end knives from makers like Stewart Marsh as well as Woodlores, Woodlore clones and some other lovely bespoke knives, but for the past number of years i've reverted to Mora 510, 511 (with the guard cut off), my original Mora Clippers, Mora Classics and Hultafors HVK's, bear in mind that before i fell ill i was out in the woods & countryside working, teaching and practicing/honing my skills at least 4-5 days a week and used my knives every day, sometimes hard work other days, just cutting a block of cheese for lunch, but they all got used. I don't know why i reverted back to basics, but it felt and still feels right for me, i'm not bemoaning anyone who uses high end tools, use what you are happy with, if it works for you it's great, like the knife that you don't mention, i think you mentioned it in a previous video a long time back that you didn't get on with it, but i know a few people who swear by them and won't hear a word said against them, just one of those things, there is no one size fits all, as i sit here typing this, on the desk is an old Frosts Mora Classic and an Opinel No8, can't get much more basic than that, but they work and suit what im doing today. I still take my bespoke tools out and about but mainly they are all drawer queens these days, shame in some respects, but it is what it is.

      That is the same as me. I used to use really expensive knives... trc, chris reeve, lionsteel etc. But now I prefer to get as much knife as I can for the least money possible. When you get an expensive knife it very rarely does such a better job than a garberg, or any mora really. The garberg is all the knife a bushcrafter or camper will ever need. And when it comes time to finally get another knife I will just be getting another garberg. For the money its simply the best option on the market today.

    I own many moras and have to say they make great knives , I dont have the Garberg but recently got the orange bushcraft and fire steel very happy with it, and have beat the crap out of it and its solid as a rock in over a years use now . I have had many knives over the years and my 2 go to's are the openiel number 8 for food prep and the moras , Next purchase I think will be the Garberg , a great review. Oh and ref the rivets I would just take an awl push through some holes and sew it in tight right round with 1000 lb nylon sewing thread , I use that stuff all the time when i make pouches and sheaths etc strong as hell and a roll lasts forever.

One of my friends Kansbol’s point has been bent while carving a spoon and mine has started to rust at the choil despite it is a stainless steel blade. My Garberg Carbon was exactly the same as yours, it was shockingly blunt (until I sharpened it) the reason it shocked me so bad was because of how sharp my companion was when it arrived and then I expected the upgrade to be even sharper. Anyway I am knew you knives and bush crafting and so I had to learn how to sharpen as well. Thankfully I had practice with my companion and that prepared me for the Garberg. Btw I live on the west coast of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and would love to join a bushcraft club but I don’t know where to look tbh. One more thing is that lots of people complain about the plastic handle, but I actually love it, it has a quality plastic feel (if you know what I mean 😂) I love it.

    Micro-bevel. Cool, I didn't know this. I am getting this knife from Amazon tomorrow, but mine in in stainless. I'll check for the micro-bevel. This video, although old at this time, has been very informative. All the bush craft/ survival knives I own have in one way or another have something that bothers me and I own a lot of them. Fusilier Vet here just re-entering the World of Bushcraft. I grew up doing the things I'm now relearning. Knives have come on a fair bit since my old bowie style blade as a teen but are basically the same. I was a keen outdoorsman & still am. We're now doing what countless generations of of forefathers did every day so I normally go for the kind of camp knife thats been proven for generations.. This time round I decided to try something a little different & bought an amazingly cheap Mora Companion. I find it a very good knife that I just couldnt get a spark off (until youtube gave me the answer. I ground down the spine & now have a decent spark with a ferrrel rod. The knife is ok but not quite long or wide enough for my taste. But for the price its great value. I have looked at both the Garberg and Kansbol but the only thing putting me off is the handle. I'm quite keen on wooden handles & may go down that route in the future. I have recently discoverd a veterans woodland retreat about 30 minutes away on the banks of the River Ribble that I can access any time i want along with other military veterans. I am about to continue the bushcraft journey I began nearly 45 years ago. I like your channel & your style btw. Keep em coming.

    In case of injury or whatever, you can use the pommel for one-handed ferro rod striking by basically sitting on the knife / clamping the handle with the backside of your knee.

    Very in depth opinion piece, after lots of thought. Only thing I don't get was your comment about the protective coating. I'm not sure how you sharpen it, but that whole flat edge without coating is what should lay on the stone, right? I mean that flat edge makes it easy to find the angle. So if the put a coat on it, it could gum up the stone, but more importantly it would come off the first time you sharpen it. So what would the point be? A hollow ground may keep the coat longer, but not a Scandinavian grind.
    I suspect you're putting your own bevel?
    Btw, I tried the companion for a short while. Found the blade good, until someone stole it from our site. I kinda grew up with hollow grinds though, so I may replace it, but I camp and hunt, and am not really into "bushcraft", so I'm in no hurry.

    To the knife subject I have the mora companion hd and I find this does everything thing I need I did have to grind the spine to put a edge on for a fire steel but for a £10 knife it does the job the only thing I would change is the sheath as I now starting to crack thanks for the video 😎😎

    @timbo4374 4 года назад +1

    Most knife makers put a micro bevel on their scandi grinds because it adds a little extra strength to the apex compared to a true v-grind scandi, it's a geometry thing.. Some people like it, some don't. It boils down to personal preference, and it will disappear the first time you sharpen it anyway, unless you deliberately put it back on..
    I use my Garberg a lot. I used to use the Mora Bushcraft Black, which is another great knife, which cost about half of the Garberg. I wish I could have a Garberg with the Bushcraft Black handle..it's a more comfortable handle, at least for me, but I like the extra confidence that the full tang Garberg gives me for harder tasks. Either one is a great option though. Other than that, I'm a knife junkie, so I have quite a few different knives, and the Bark River Bushcrafter is probably my favorite for bushcraft or general wood craft. It isn't cheap though..it runs about $240 for a basic black micarta handle, and a fancy wood or other material options can put it close t or even above $300, so it definitely isn't for everyone. It's made of 3V steel, which holds an edge much longer, but it's also harder to sharpen, so not recommended for novice sharpeners. It's also a convex edge, so that adds even another difficulty to the task for beginners, so I would only recommend it for people who are very well experienced at sharpening.

    I think the Garberg is outstanding. If it was made by any company other than mora people wouldn’t have a negative say about it. But, because a knife maker known for budget blades (Mora) builds a top tier knife, it gets shunned. Can’t they make both? At $70-75 ish , it is not going to empty your wallet.

    I love the mora carbon garberg....but I had all the same problems, lost a rivet 2 days after I received it, as for the coating and micro beveled edge, it was some work to correct it

      It's interesting to hear that somebody else has had a problem with the sheath rivets, did you contact the retailer for a replacement?

      @@TheBushcraftPadawan I didn't send it back, I just went to the hardware store purchased a new fastener.
      I too bought a nameless knife, so I had to wait awhile before I got the Garberg and was not going to let it out of my hot little hands :)

    I did not read through all the comments, so I might say something that someone allready said. The mini bevel serve the same purpose as a mini bevel on an axe. It protects the edge from chipping and rolling. Shaving sharp or paper cutting sharp is great for precise carving but for most outdoor work not needed.
    I own 10 Moraknv knives, 4 of them Woodcarving ones. Plenty other survival/military knives. Also have 65 Axes/Adzes. I do everything from felling to carving and mostly very hard woods since I live in South Africa which have the same type of wood then Australia.
    As far as handles that cause pains...use pottery clay to shape a knife handle, then grip it so that it takes the shape of your grip. You can bake the clay if you want, but then you have a "image" of what your grip is and can shape your knive handles to that with knives/sandpaper etc.
    You can do that for every handtool that you use for an extended time. I did it even on screwdrivers...no more blisters!

    The micro bevel is there on many mora knifes, since reviewers complained about micro chips after abusing the knife.
    Before that, they came shaving sharp.
    The carving knifes still have a zero grind though.
    Usually you can see the micro bevel with the naked eye. Especially on the garberg with dlc. That part is not black.

    Once the honeymoon was over for me I found the Garbergs edge to be to small for the thickness. The belly portion curves up way to fast for the thickness of the blade. This causes the belly to be to thick for thumb push cuts imho. Still overall it's a great survival bushcraft knife but for me I'd rather use the Bushcraft Black.
    I've always wondered if the carbon edition has the same feel as my stainless. I've had identical knives in different steels feel very different before
    The Garberg does have one of the best handles I've ever used, it gives you amazing power amd control.

    I recently used both of these knives on a course. We were issued a companion but I had a garberg of my own. The Garberg was much much much more powerful, especially for our Australian hardwoods. In that respect, I think it's much safer. That said, if you're backpacking and the knife is more of a fallback rather than a feature of your experience out there bushcrafting, the companion weights a fairly substantial amount less, especially with a polymer sheath. About ~135g difference. Doesn't sound like a lot I guess but it's close to the weight of a whole laplander saw.

    I can think of a real world situation where you would need to strike a ferro rod off the heel of the mora. If you have injured a hand/arm out in the field and only had 1 working hand you can hold the knife in the crook of your knee and light a fire 1 handed if needed and it’s a skill worth practicing just incase.
    Also can be used for scraping the inside of say bark to process tinder.

    • @timbo4374
      @timbo4374 4 года назад +1

      @@tikkidaddy it adds a different bevel angle. A true scandi is thinner behind the edge, which does make it cut into the wood better, but also makes it easier to chip or roll. It's not a huge difference, but it is there none the less..it's all a geometry thing. A wider bevel angle makes it less fragile, but also reduces the efficiency of the way in which it digs into the wood. Most experienced bushcrafters prefer the true v-grind scandi, with no micro bevel.

    I just received my first Mora Garberg... This knife is EPIC !!! Build quality is superior. The one thing I really like about this knife that no other knife has is that it has a short drop at the point allowing this knife to be extra strong. Other knife makers tend to make a false blade on top in taper it an inch back. This knife does not. The taper is less than 5 mm, which gives the knife a whole lot of strength up front. For 70 bucks this is the best knife there is... This is not an entry knife by any stretch of the imagination. Show me a better knife....
