I still remember the night it was announced that Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan had passed away. A7X has been my favourite band since I was 9 years old, I was 14 when the announcement came, and it was absolutely soul destroying .He made me want to play the drums, I'd just started playing about a year and a half before and had my first real drum kit 4 months before and had finally JUST learned to play the song that made me want to pick up sticks in the first place (Beast and the Harlot). It was utterly heart-breaking, I'd watched every behind the scenes video I could find, listened to all their albums on repeat and not only admired and was inspired by his talent as a drummer, singer and songwriter but also loved seeing his hilarious, over the top personality, particularly in their making of the self titled album documentary. I felt like I'd lost a member of my family, which might seem silly now, but it does feel like that when someone you look up to so much passes away - I felt a similar way when Chester Bennington passed in 2017, and I still get those feelings of hurt whenever I listen to So Far Away, Fiction, or Save Me to this day - and that's all credit to the band for pouring the feelings they and all their fans had at the time. It's been 11 years since those songs were released and they still hit me the same way they did when I first listened to them at 15 years old.
When I got to see them live in 2018, they played So Far Away and opened it with a video of the Rev's last interview talking about his feelings on how far the bands come and it just fucking broke me
@@PartyPoison24 I saw a show in 2013 i believe on the hail to the king tour, it was a make-up date for Uproar festival in which we got free tickets for A7X, Black Veil Brides, Hollywood Undead, and Asking Alexandria in the Shark Tank in san jose. They played so far away to the rev's parents who were in the center of the crowd in the light booth
Mike Portnoy did such an amazing job as a temporary fill in to complete this album. No one can live up to The Rev...period, but so much respect to Mike for keeping The Rev's style throughout this masterpiece of an album🤘. There is also a bit of a Dream Theater riff in this song as well, which is awesome.
@Prozakhistan yeah so does Mangini, or Danny Carey.. there are tons of better drummers out there than Portnoy and Jimmy but people don't realize or even care about that simply because Portnoy and Jimmy always locked in with the music, with every music they play, they play the music. It's just a matter of preference. I'm not going to make a debate like in the DT fanbase, but just for example, I like both Mangini and Portnoy, I play drums because of Portnoy but hell I want to be as advanced as Mangini, and my influence in drumming mostly came from Portnoy.
Personally i think Mike is a better drummer(not by much), but god damn I miss The Rev. Mike Portnoy was The Rev's favorite drummer which was a major reason he was asked. Also Mike asked DT around the time to take a break from touring and they didnt want to so he literally quit the band for what he needed. So its sad The Rev died but the timing for this collab couldn't have happened with this drummer who was faithful to his band for 30 years. It woukd have been cool to hear The Rev do a DT song with them but I have to wonder how welcoming DT would have been of that idea.
So happy you've done this song. Such beautiful lyrics whilst dark too. Underrated track too. "They say that all beauty must die, I say it just moves on"
The show I went to during their nightmare tour in Florida, they did this fucking song as an encore as the crowd was screaming and cheering for an encore. It was fucking epic, and I couldn't believe they committed to a 12+ minute song for an encore.
Yes!!! My fav example is The Stage and maybe Nobody, but they have played so many immaculate solos throughout the years, it's so hard to choose. Seize the day is definitely right up there
Will honestly forever love avenged sevenfold, I just get sucked into every song! As a drummer since the 4th grade (I'm almost 30 now) the drums and the double bass just hit so hard and so damn deep. And don't even get me started about how hypnotizing his voice is 😍🥰 I've only been able to see them once and so sadly to me it was after The Rev died, his death hit me so hard and absolutely shattered me.
Perfectly said from a fellow drummer. The Rev was A7X and they haven't been the same since. His drums were very influential to my playing style as well, but his drums made the songs for me. As every fill was perfectly placed and leaving to the next riff. Mike Portnoy was probably the only one that could have played the songs as The Rev would have played it.
I’m a drumer too I’ve loved them ever since I herd them for the first time in 2009 with there new single nightmare once I herd that song I fell in love with not only the song but the band now there my favorite band of all time

You are correct, however to add to that - most of the what you hear, not just the drums and guitars but the lyrics too, were all pieced together from recordings and sheet music they found all around Jimmy’s house after he passed. The fact they were able to take everything, adjust timings and pitch to make the whole a song, not to mention one that flows the way it does. Its fucking heartbreaking but equally heartwarming. Dont forget that a lot of them he wrote or had a part in writing too and he sang on a couple also. Wrote like 80% of the drums for the ones he hadna part in and even some that were composed after his death they had Mike Portnoy record some of his drums that he had written
Actually looked it up for another comment so i thought id correct myself: he wrote about like 40% of the songs or at least in part wrote them. He composed the drums for a lot of the songs (like almost 60% because they took stuff he had randomly started and left for a few) and i think they even kept his recording for Nightmare.
Rev was in a lot of emotional pain but he had a condition that caused him major physical pain as well. Apparently he finished the lyrics to the final song in this album, left the studio and went home and drank a "Brompton Cocktail" which is title of a song on their self-titled album. That's the story I heard Korn's Jonathan Davis tell. How he knew what happened idk, but it's sad for sure. I relate to what Jimmy was feeling. I have depression and physical conditions that cause great physical pain and it's too much at times, but I found a reason to stay and that's my granddaughter. There's always a reason to keep living. Find it or make one up and try to be your best self for them. I can't imagine her life without me and I have a mission in life and that's to live for her and guide her for as long as I can. I could never harm myself now. Not a possibility now. If you're feeling like I used to feel, stop and imagine your loved ones missing and needing you, but living without you when they need you most. Do what you gotta do to fix your life. It's never truly hopeless.
You’re spot on with the meaning. This song was written about the rev most likely, and it’s also a great song for just the meaning and journey of loss. Losing anything at all. A dream, a loved one, an old toy, anything. It’s about overcoming that obstacle of loss and going on, in honor of whatever you’ve lost, or to make up for something if it IS your fault.
Nightmare was the perfect album at the perfect time for me, four months before the release my bestfriend killed himself, there was so much anger, pain and depression inside of me and listen to this songs helped so much, becoming stable again, finishing school etc.
@@jonathanc8560 Yes they're still making music, the singer said the new album is 70% done. They're also performing at Hellfest 2022 next year. So new album. The singer got a blood blister on his vocal cords back 2018 and hasn't been on stage since. He says he practiced everyday and learning new techniques. So no, he didn't lose his voice.
Been listening to them for most of my life my best friend took his life and I finally realize what they meant when they said "tonight we all die young" a part of me died when he left it has been 3 years I miss him every day I hope I get a chance to see him again
Avenged sevenfold have good through so much. They lost a drummer and a brother, their lead vocalist had gone through a very tough period with his vocal chords, and they never gave up. (literally needed to not speak for 2 months) only finding a new drummer took them 6 years this band is my fav not only because of its wonderful music, also because their will and love towards the profession
This is my absolute favorite Avenged Sevenfold Track. An underrated masterpiece, all 10 minutes of this song are worth listening to. So much emotion behind the lyrics, the instruments are constructed beautifully and the pacing of the song is just perfect. Even if youre not big on a7x you've gotta love this song.
Being a fan since 2003 it still blows my mind that these guys grew up 20 mins from me. Blessed to be a southern California metal head and have gotten to hangout with them down here 🤘🏼
I've been listening to this song for the last 10+ years, even learned parts of it on guitar. The lyrics have never made sense to me until watching this video. All I can say is wow
This IS my all time favourite song.... everytime i listen to it, it gives me goosebumps and makes me cry. Not only because of how good it is, but also what it represents. Thank you so much for reacting to it
I will always love avenged sevenfold, they are such an amazing band. Every song is a story, they have honestly changed my life. Incredible sing, incredible band.
If you listen at 1:50 you hear the word “skull”. According to the guys, Jimmy was messing around in the vocal room and said Skull into a mic. They found it when going through vocal tracks after his death. They decided to use it in this song. Just an odd, fun fact. And one more way to immortalize The Rev into this album.
I love how you can Jimmy's voice in the lyrics "but someday you will find," "and dragged us all behind," "crystal blue-lit sky's" and "I say it just moves on."
Bro... I learned this song note for note when I was 15, I've played hundreds of times and listened to it probably a thousand, and I swear the lyrics have *never* hit me as hard as they did watching this reaction. God damn I'm so happy your channel's a thing, keep doing what you're doing my man.
Abstract song structure. It's almost like the song is building up through a downwards spiral of emotions until we finally get some relief at the very end. Confusion-->Lost/Running-->Crying out for help-->Strength/Relief. They do a great job of expressing these emotions; it must feel like being in a whirlwind. Especially with creating a song after The Rev passed with some of his material. I'd feel like I was actually the tornado. Thanks for showing me this one. Cheers!
I literally cried when I watched this.. this is my first time hearing this too and I lost my younger brother in a tragic accident and these lyrics just hit me hard right in the feels!! I've been through that grieving stage and it hurts like I've never felt before! I love Avenged Sevenfold so much!!
This is a badass song thanks for the reaction.. fiction was originally going to be the last track on the album but they added this..so intense..RIP REV!!
Sometimes when I listen to songs like this I take it for granted, but when I watch videos like this and really listen to the song, I remember just how amazing they are
I appreciate your pure reaction to this song. It is absolutely one of their best. I lost my three brothers and mom in the last four years. This song and "So Far Away" have helped me cope and given me voice to my feelings. I love A7X for that, if for nothing else.
This all album is a piece of art. Save me is just awesome and always makes me cry because is beautiful. Matt's voice is everything, that man can express all his feelings through his voice.
I love how you're trying to relate the songs in this album to the five stages of grief because this is exactly what it was to them: a coping mechanism for Jimmy's passing and yes, he was only 28 when he transcended. If you want to hear them going the anger stage of grief I recommend giving God Hates Us a listen, be warned though, It's kind of a throwback to their Sounding The Seventh Trumpet/Waking the Fallen days. And I really really *REALLY* recommend you react to Fiction. The song was originally called "Death" but the band renamed it "Fiction" after one The Rev's other aliases. This song gets particularly emotional if you know the backstory to it: this is The Rev's swan song. The last song he ever wrote in his life. He turned the demo in saying "that's it, that's the last song for the album" and 3 days later he died. The band reworked the lyrics to honour him and even managed to salvage some parts of The Rev's vocal tracks and included them in the final song as a sendoff. The first line "Now I think I understand how the world can overcome a man" is double tracked by The Rev and Shadows, the chorus "Not that I could or that I would let it burn under my skin/let it burn!" and one of the last lines "Hope it's worth it here on the highway/I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight" are all Jimmy's vocal track.
Thank you so much for coming back to this song, Alex! A7X has been my favorite band since 2004 when I discovered them shortly after Waking The Fallen came out. I think you described their songwriting ability and emotionality perfectly during this reaction. Here’s some suggestions for your next song to react to from their vast catalog: “Critical Acclaim” “Mad Hatter” “The Stage” (music video is a must!) “We Come Out At Night” “Planets” Tried to give a varied range of suggestions from multiple albums so you can continue to see how versatile they are as musicians. Keep up the great work, love your channel!
This song is truly a masterpiece. What’s funny is I’ve been listening to it for a decade, and I never realized the lyrics fit so well with the Rev’s death. Like Wtf lol
I discovered A7X when this album was released.. I dove head first into their music and anything I could find about Jimmy. Listening to this the first time without knowing exactly what occurred in their world I could hear their pain.. listening to it every time after knowing their loss.. still chokes me up. Knife master & stallion duck. 🖤💙
I lost my dad 8 years ago to cancer and I question nearly every day, why? Why did it happen? Why was he taken when he fought so hard? When you listen to these lyrics, and the way Alex breakdowns the lyrics, it just hits you, it’s life and death is part of life. Man, I dunno what the fuck I’m talking about, haha. I guess I’m just super emotional listening to that song and Alex’s breakdown. Hug the ones you love 🖤
“Fiction” needs to be listened to if we’re talking the passing of The Rev
Matt said jimmy turned this song in two days before his passing, and it was originally titled 'Death'
Fiction is incredibly emotional, especially for how it came about.

Hope you’re doing well my friend. I know what you feel. Keep pushing. Your granddaughter is proud of you
You’re spot on with the meaning.
Portnoy absolutely amazing on this song. His fills and character stand out.
Love Avenged sevenfold! Fiction from the same album always hits me hard even to this day...
Yes, this song changed me, the way Jimmy composed things was generally amazing
Not Ready To Die from Black Reign by Avenged Sevenfold. You're going to love it!
"Set me free" by Avenged Sevenfold is a must
Nightmare was the perfect album at the perfect time for me, four months before the release my bestfriend killed himself, there was so much anger, pain and depression inside of me and listen to this songs helped so much, becoming stable again, finishing school etc.
It’s about fukin time lad!!!! You gotta do more
🤣🤣🤣
@@AlexHefner i hit you up on IG
@Prozakhistan are the even making music anymore? thought the singer lost his voice?
@Prozakhistan No, they steal the spotlight cause they're that popular and that amazing. Deal with it.
M.I.A. Is good, especially how he sings at the end, tugs my heart strings
Avenged sevenfold have good through so much.
They lost a drummer and a brother, their lead vocalist had gone through a very tough period with his vocal chords, and they never gave up. (literally needed to not speak for 2 months)
only finding a new drummer took them 6 years
this band is my fav not only because of its wonderful music, also because their will and love towards the profession
Saw the thumbnail in my feed and the first thing that came to mind, “oh s**t it’s my boy Alex!”
In my opinion, the best Avenged Sevenfold song, it's so fun to play also
The whole Nightmare album is absolute fire, from the first track to the last, all in different ways.
This whole album is phenomenal! And a perfect send off to the rev!
Song is a masterpiece
This song is INCREDIBLY monumental to A7X fans. Appreciate this reaction a ton!!
as a guitarist i can tell this song has so much emotion put into it but the lyrics just put even more of that emotion its amazing and its amazing.
Not going to lie. I haven't listened to this song in ages and it's still as awesome as the first time.
Avenged Sevenfold are a blessing to music
This IS my all time favourite song.... everytime i listen to it, it gives me goosebumps and makes me cry. Not only because of how good it is, but also what it represents. Thank you so much for reacting to it
The most beautiful creation from avenged and late the rev
He definitely says “crystal blue disguise”
@@chadphelps5809 oh. I forgot he said that
This is such a great song. It’s lengthy though! As others have said, it is an experience.
Bro... I learned this song note for note when I was 15, I've played hundreds of times and listened to it probably a thousand, and I swear the lyrics have *never* hit me as hard as they did watching this reaction. God damn I'm so happy your channel's a thing, keep doing what you're doing my man.
Avenged sevenfold's nightmare album is definitely one of my favorite albums it's solid
Jimmy's death hit me hard. I remember when I got their first demo like 20 something years ago. This album was an amazing tribute to him.
One of my favorite Avenged songs!
Need reactions for full A7X albums and Trivium albums!😎
City of evil would be dope
@@megadeth8592 Waking the fallen would be even more dope

I love this masterpiece so much! Goosebumps every f--ing time! Miss you Rev! Thnx Mike Portnoy!
"immediate goosebumps, what other band does that" THATS A GOOD POINT, THAT IS A REALLY GOOD POINT
This all album is a piece of art. Save me is just awesome and always makes me cry because is beautiful. Matt's voice is everything, that man can express all his feelings through his voice.
You have to listen to "Lost", it's in the selftitled album. The solo of that song saves me everytime I feel down.
Nightmare is a masterpiece of sorrow, reflection, and instrumental mastery.
This album is incredible. Worth a full listen.
‘’So much to see tonight so why’d you close your eyes,
Why can’t I shut mine” that was a bar!
Thank you, Alex...great reaction...a great song by the greatest band!
Thank you so much for coming back to this song, Alex! A7X has been my favorite band since 2004 when I discovered them shortly after Waking The Fallen came out. I think you described their songwriting ability and emotionality perfectly during this reaction.
Here’s some suggestions for your next song to react to from their vast catalog:
“Critical Acclaim”
“Mad Hatter”
“The Stage” (music video is a must!)
“We Come Out At Night”
“Planets”
Tried to give a varied range of suggestions from multiple albums so you can continue to see how versatile they are as musicians.
Keep up the great work, love your channel!
Save me is literally my favorite song from that album.
This song is truly a masterpiece. What’s funny is I’ve been listening to it for a decade, and I never realized the lyrics fit so well with the Rev’s death. Like Wtf lol
This song has so much blood sweat and tears 😭 poured into it, what a master piece the rev would be so proud
alex i absolutely love how you genuinely get into the song and really take the lyrics in depth and actually catch the sense of the song!
I found out that the whole "Nightmare" Album, which The Rev helped write for some of the songs before he died, was dedicated to him.
All of their Albums man. It's almost like 2 decades, it's worth looking into.
YES ! Save me ! Favourite song along side victim 🙌
One of the Best Songs ever made.
Dude if you keep listening to their entire discography you’ll hear a new favorite from them w/ each new listen.
