    My husband has Barrett's Esophagus, diagnosed in 2020. He is 75 (as of 3-20-24), had Parkinson's Disease diagnosed when he was 61. He is very thin & has had GERD for the past 31 years. Since 2021, he has been undergoing radial frequency ablation, cryoablation, dilations, biopsies, and a 4.5 hour endoscopic submucosal dissection of the esophagus in May of 2023. Per your video my husband does not have 2 of the 3 conditions that lead to GERD. He is not morbidly obese nor does he eat fatty meals. He does like to drink a diet ginger beer a couple times a week. So I guess he has a hypotonic circular muscle at the lower esophageal sphincter that has caused his Barrett's esophagus. He also has diastasis recti, just learned of this when he had bilateral hernia repair done in Jan. of 2024. Wondering if diastasis recti contributes to a thinning of the muscle tissue around the stomach or widening of the Angle of HIS even in a thin person? (He is 5 ft 8 inches & weighs 140 pounds.) Very interesting to learn that enzymes not acid is what causes Barrett's Esophagus and not the acid because the Pantoprazole that he takes does not stop reflux, it just reduces symptoms of acid in the esophagus.

    You are absolutely awesome... teaching is an art and you are a master. As a nursing student, the more you can include signs and symptoms to watch for and nursing interventions all the better for me!

    I learned some new things toward the end. You can get barretts or make your Barretts worse even if you are no longer burning yourself with stomach acid because the cold reflux is still bad for you. Thanks Andrew. I'll mention it to my doctor.
    Also, I don't know if you know about the Golden Rest beds. I just bought an adjustable bed at Sears but I bought the wrong kind. It looks to me like the Golden Rest has the right idea because you can roll over and sleep on your side or stomach without bending your back the wrong way and still maintaining a good angle to prevent stomach contents from getting up in the esophagus.
    The bed I just bought does the same thing most adjustable beds do. It lifts your feet or your back so if you lay on your back all night your GERD will be controlled. Trouble is I hate laying on my back all the time and I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep in that position.

    Awesome video! You explained it very simply. I am a paramedic student, so this video is completely irrelevant to me as far as testing is concerned, but I'm very interested in the physiology behind the conditions, and I am still considering going to med school after paramedic. I'm going to start watching your other videos too. Thank you!

    Hi there, great video! I'm currently studying naturopathic medicine and learning the pathophysiology of the gut. I understand there is a place and time for medication- but with GERD (which so many of the population present with), I can't believe the dependence on acid blockers which aren't even treating the cause! Do you know if med schools are educating more about the impact of diet on at least this condition? Also, have you heard of states where too low of acid can cause relaxation of LES?

    • @chrishancock9866
      @chrishancock9866 2 года назад

      Of course medical schools talk about the underlying causes of GERD. The reason so many people are on medication is because 1) they need something to treat their symptoms, and 2) there are potentially very serious complications of GERD which need to be managed. As a naturopath, you will be treating people who are motivated to live a healthy life; they will be coming to you primed to make healthier changes. But, there are many people out there who either aren't motivated, haven't had someone directly tell them they need to lose weight, or (in the vast majority of cases) there are other factors which make achieving and maintaining a healthy weight very difficult (societal, mental, metabolic, medical etc). Health can be a very complex issue and I encourage you to think broadly and critically about these issues. Welcome to the health system

    Why does GERD present as LPR in some people? It is my understanding that LPR is caused by aerosolized pepsin getting into airways, including nose, throat, and larynx. What is the mechanism that causes this to happen, other than a leaky LES?

    Hey Andrew, Great videos.
    If there is less erosion due to PPI's or H2 blockers wouldn't it mean it would decrease the risk of barret's, because barret's is due to erosion?

    Then how do you cure GERD/chronic acid reflux? Is there an actual "Permanent Cure" that works or just symptom treatments for life? I developed weaked LES after chronic overating. So, after I eat, a lot of food just comes out of my mouth effortlessly. What should I do to cure this?

    Thank u very much... I'm really shocked by the information that "reducing the amount of acidity in the stomach will not reduce the frequency of parrot esophagus/cancer"!!!
    So, what do u advice me to do instead of just taking antacids?... I started taking them 4 months ago and that is when I started feeling acidity. However, I had started feeling the sour taste in my mouth some 7 YEARS ago.(gradually)
    Do u advice me to go for surgery? How much is it likely to be successful?
