Elvis Costello started out really cool, and just gets better and better. As for Emmylou Harris, I could go on for hours, and exhaust my vocabulary of good things I could say about her. but one word sums it all up........CLASS!
I revisit this video a couple of times a year. I’m doing this ever since I discovered this performance back in the day, shortly after it was initially posted. It’s my pelgrimage to a revelation of marvel and beauty brought by this remarkable duo; Elvis Costello-country music’s advocate-together with Emmylou Harris, one of the mothers of modern day country music. It feels like an occasional marriage, unified in a unique eternal duet.
The best rendition of this timeless tune love song I have heard - and these two singers could not only do justice to this tune of two of America's greatest songwriters out of the deep south that the world will ever know (look them up not hard) they Mr.Costello and Ms.Harris are the best !
He really does. When I think back to the old 'persona', as much as I loved it then, longevity never occurred to me - not to this extent. I've loved his every incarnation, every collaboration, and ,his evolution (that elusive gift they all aspire to) is such a wonderful additon and comfort to my own.
Elvis is the greatest singer/songwriter to come out of the punk generation (MY generation)! He is a multi-talented guy! and to hear him with Emmylou is a great treat! Thanks!
Beautifully done. Yes, I love the version of EmmyLou with Gram. It is a classic. But Gram Parsons has been gone for 40 years....and Elvis and Emmy blended their voices beautifully in this rendition. I am sure Elvis did not mean to replace Gram... he is bidding homage to a classic and I think he does it justice. Bravo!
elvis has a perfect voice for country. so much power and beauty in every intonation. doesnt matter if you like someone better, you cant tell me this doesnt twinge you deep inside.
You are absolutely right TheMassageGuru. I'm so impressed by Elvis Costello and the scope of his talent . And Emmylou has had such a distinguished and impeccable career, which of course is by no means over yet. They have both worked with all kinds of great musicians and they sound so great together, it is very good for the soul to hear stuff like this.
This is a great tune and you'll never find a bigger Emmylou fan than me. As for Gram there are not enough words to express his greatness. Elvis is great, too. On top of of that he is married to one of the coolest women on the planet in Diana Krall. Even with that said, I feel that the best performance of this classic is the Everlys. This one drags a little to much. Felice and Boudleaux wrote this specifically for the boys. If you've never heard it check it out.
I agree with allnightpancakes..."Secrets, Profane and Sugarcane" is a stellar work of art. This song/video is very soothing to me, as I am being scorned by the love of my life right now. This is just the salve I needed. These two voices blend together beautifully.
"Love Hurts" is the name of a song written and Composed by Boudleaux Bryant and Felice Bryant, and first recorded by The Everly Brothers in July 1960. It was released that December on the album A Date With the Everly Brothers, but was never released as a single (A-side or B-side) by the Everlys. growing up in Scotland the first version I heard was by Nazareth (wonderful) but I now have a 22 year old son called Gram!
Completely agree -- very nice performance indeed, and sharing the duet with Emmylou to boot! From the talent who gave us "Watching the Detectives", yet. How's THAT for range?...
This song was written by Boudleau and Felice Bryant and first recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. The husband and wife songwriting team wrote many of the Everly Brothers hit songs.
I don't think EC or ELH would sing ANYTHING they didn't think was worthwhile. Why not just enjoy the moment? Two great contemporary artists together. What's not to like?
Elvis isn't a cowboy but he's done so much good music I can forgive him his stetson and fringed leather jacket. But as for Emmylou - has there ever been any one who both looks so beautiful and sings so beautifully?
Elvis. my dear Elvis.... what were you thinking when you bought that jacket? And don't you have someone who cares about you enough to throw it out? Friends don't let friends where fringed jackets.
I never thought that I would say this, but I think that I like this version better than Gram and Emmylou's version. I'm still not sure - but this is damned good.
Someone send me email -- here they are: Boudleaux was born Diadorius Boudleaux Bryant in Shellman, Georgia, and was trained as a classical violinist. He performed with the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra during its 1937-38 season, but had more interest in country fiddling and joined Hank Penny and his Radio Cowboys, an Atlanta-based western music band. In 1945 he met Matilda Genevieve Scaduto while performing at a hotel in her hometown of Milwaukee, WI. They did this and other classics.
Elvis Costello started out really cool, and just gets better and better. As for Emmylou Harris, I could go on for hours, and exhaust my vocabulary of good things I could say about her. but one word sums it all up........CLASS!
110000% agreed!!

How could this possibly be even better than I expected it to be?

Emmylou can lead, follow, or sing together better than anyone else ever has or ever will again.
I didn't want to cry today but this... So beautiful
Gram and Emmylou will always have the best version, but this is pretty good.
Elvis is the greatest singer/songwriter to come out of the punk generation (MY generation)! He is a multi-talented guy! and to hear him with Emmylou is a great treat! Thanks!
Wow this is beautiful. And makes me cry..
What a beautiful version! ☺
I don't think that I've ever heard a performance where neither singer is singing the melody. They're each singing a different harmony. I loved it.
Yes, I see that. It could be a split screen in a movie. Both singing the same song, both hurting in different places. Good observation.
classic song, beautifully, and respectfully done, by two great artists.
I love this version, personally. It gives me chills, their voices tuned in together... beautiful!
emmy floors me everytime.

W-O-W!!!!!This is just something else!!!
what a combination, who would have thought it????
Workin' for me. Love the sound of them together.
Performed by these two makes the song go a notch up in my book! Thanks!
Yes, Dave, beautiful. Elvis is a huge Gram fan and a brilliant artist. It was a fitting tribute to Gram. Thank you, Elvis.
Elvis Costello has so much character and emotion in his voice...wow.
elvis has a perfect voice for country. so much power and beauty in every intonation. doesnt matter if you like someone better, you cant tell me this doesnt twinge you deep inside.
this is such a beautiful song and such a lovely version...thank you gram parsons, you're not forgotten and thanks emmy
Another gem from the mind and soul of Boudeleaux Bryant
Elvis is King! and Emmylou is a beautiful lady.
Nice compo.
I want Emmylou to sing the background of my life ... that would make it good!!!

Two huge worlds coming together creating a new beauty. Thanks guys.
best duo.. love the sound of their voices together.
This is the best performance of this song I've ever heard or felt BEAUTIFULLY done!
Simply divine. I love them both individually, and the coming together on this song is a rare thing. Thanks for posting!! :)
Absolutely, his voice has real emotion in it, cuts others with less integrity to pieces.
The voice of my princess more and more beautiful.♥☺♫♥♫
That voice touch my soul like no other

This is just great.Emmy is the best
It works for me. I remember this broadcast.
Beautiful harmony. I love it!
That little boys and girls is what we call...talent.
Simply beautiful and beautifully simple. Thank you. I love it ❤❤
She is such a spectacular beauty.
That is a great take on this song. Can hear both of their so-distinctive voices.
Saw this in san jose at the bridge school benefit last year. Beautiful performance.
I agree with allnightpancakes..."Secrets, Profane and Sugarcane" is a stellar work of art.
This song/video is very soothing to me, as I am being scorned by the love of my life right now. This is just the salve I needed. These two voices blend together beautifully.
This song always pulls my heart... every time...time emortal

I love her singing with the late great gram parsons.
Yes, they were a once-in-a-lifetime combination. Just divine!
Beautiful harmony. Great duo.
I think that the two sound good together. Both have interesting and unique voices. The song is strong. The mix comes together for me.
great version.love elvis jacket.
Loved Costello's outfit!
this is a everly brothers song, nobody sings it better.
It was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.
This pairing is especially beautiful and poignant.
What a rare moment.
I enjoyed this so much what it first aired. Thank you for posting it and giving me the opportunity to once again see this.
Holy cow that was beautiful.
Jelena, pozdrav iz Dalmacije i uzivaj slusati ovu meni ugodnu pjesmu.

This is a Gram Parson song.. I love it.
Em and Gram.. is the best. Elvis coocl to :-)
This is a haunting version is this song.
Emmilou's harmony is a wonderful talent.
Great song.
Roy Orbison was the orginal singer and did a knock out job on this tune.
This was great! Let's not forget the Roy Orbison version either, though -- one of the Bryants called it their favorite.
Crossing THE Boundaries!! This is 1950s MICKEY & SYLVIA!
Emmylou Harris .... Looove..---
by far the best version asholls
Elvis in that outfit just intensified my fantasy life! HAHAHA
emmylou is still number 1
Beautiful,wonderful,tremendous....le présentateur ne s'est pas trompé.
nothing like the nazareth version.. the vocal is heart wrenching in that one
Wow.
Nice Duet. Thanks for posting it!!
Beautiful cover of a classic song. Great harmony. Nadine
Completely agree -- very nice performance indeed, and sharing the duet with Emmylou to boot!
From the talent who gave us "Watching the Detectives", yet. How's THAT for range?...
Good duet. VFine song.
the Muse, Emmylou is Great
It was a bizarre comment. I've seen Elvis live at least ten times and hope to bring my kids in a few years when they can appreciate his genius.
Great Song by two wonderful Artists, but my favorite version is Emmylou Harris singing with Gram Parsons - touches your soul.
the best slow dance song ever....
This song was written by Boudleau and Felice Bryant and first recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. The husband and wife songwriting team wrote many of the Everly Brothers hit songs.
makes me cry
Emmylou is great. I never heard Elvis sing so relaxed and in this range before ... he should do it more often. Very sexy!
brilliant!
Amen and amen, brother.
Niceness ❤❤
I soooooo agree I'm sick and tired tooooo they should get a life and stop hating
i think it's great.
is that Larry Campbell playing the steel guitar back there? Love that guy!!
I don't think EC or ELH would sing ANYTHING they didn't think was worthwhile. Why not just enjoy the moment? Two great contemporary artists together. What's not to like?
Seriously good.
great sound
Best VERSION !!! :
Elvis isn't a cowboy but he's done so much good music I can forgive him his stetson and fringed leather jacket. But as for Emmylou - has there ever been any one who both looks so beautiful and sings so beautifully?
Check out his "Almost blue" album, some Nashville produced country standards sung as only he could.
Elvis. my dear Elvis.... what were you thinking when you bought that jacket? And don't you have someone who cares about you enough to throw it out? Friends don't let friends where fringed jackets.
I never thought that I would say this, but I think that I like this version better than Gram and Emmylou's version.
I'm still not sure - but this is damned good.
elvis is a genius
Very good version, but--nothing can beat
E-L H. and Gram Parson´s version!
That is the best!

Elvis was New Wave!
