Whenever I hear a Lyle Lovett song for the first time it becomes my favorite. Emmylou is a dream come true for me. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a woman. Whenever I hear her name, hear her voice or simply see her picture I always get a little depressed knowing that I’ll never meet her.
Emmylou is an American or world treasure. Her voice, her beauty is all natural. If her hair greys she goes with the flow. She's loved by all her peers. Lyle is such a gentleman and great singer.
The first time I heard this it had me in tears. I felt as though I'd been right there alongside the New Jersey Lady and her cowboy......Thank you so much, Mr. Lovett, for so much great, great music.
He is really a Gentleman...I am a Fan as long as I remember. And there comes the old Lady Emmylou Harris as young and beautiful as everytime. And he is looking very often at her. Why, wasnt she the right one? I love this song. Tanks for posting.
This is one of the best country songs ever, every time i listen it makes me feel sad and lonely, especially when Emmylou join Lyle with is unique and singular voice, amazing.
Pontaic is a great album but I've always loved this song the most on it. Love how all my favourite artists : Guy Clark(rip) , Willie Nelson, Mark Knopfler , Lyle Lovett ,Neil Young had/have the same great taste in accompanying vocal artist - the great Emmylou Harris .
This is undoubtedly the saddest song Lyle Lovett has ever written! Two people who loved each other very much not being able to marry one another because one never learned how to settle down while the other couldn't keep up. In the end, he dies without ever truly experiencing something new and different.
@LRooster4Prez Fayssoux McLean (used to be Starling) sang lots of backup for Emmylou Harris. She lives in Spartanburg, SC, and just released a CD of her own, titled "Early."

Emmylou Harris, would you not be interested to know who is in love with you, in the comments there is a ton of loving nuance, i hope you are flattered and happy to be loved!
@justobe099 - Better question > When will Lyle Lovett get some lightning bolts in that hairdo ? Right ? Make that hair grow to an enormous two foot diameter and simpy add those multi - colored lightning bolts. He would be on every cover of every magazine in the World within a week. :- )
This is NOT Walk Through The Bottomland. This is Lyle's song right? Not one of the few really GREAT songs that Emmy Lou wrote. The one she wrote after GP's death. Right?
howdymegan No, it's Lyle's song, "Walk through the Bottomland." You're thinking of "Boulder to Birmingham," written by Emmylou and Bill Danoff, which is my favorite Emmylou song.
But have always thought of the cowboy and the New Jersey lady as veiled references to Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris. Both songs among their arthors best work and both serious heart aches.
How could anybody give this a thumbs down? Seriously?
Emmylou is the best harmony singer ever. What a talent

Two class acts together.
Emmy Lou really makes this song, and I love it.
I'm a die hard Lyle Lovett fan x 23 years! Last time I saw the Large Band play had the chance to run into Keith Sewell & say "Hi"...💜 ya Lyle!!!!
lyle lovett doesn't do many country songs, but when he does, he does them right. this is awesome!
He's from Texas, of course he nails country music.
He is really a Gentleman...I am a Fan as long as I remember. And there comes the old Lady Emmylou Harris as young and beautiful as everytime. And he is looking very often at her. Why, wasnt she the right one? I love this song. Tanks for posting.
Every now and then when I hear this song I get tingles down my spine and get all teary eyed. Really a terrific song. Thanks Lyle and Emmylou!
Beautiful song.Love those glances he keeps giving her!

One of my favorites by my favorite!
love this man! The most amazing song writer and artist!
I adore Emmylou. I have been in love with her since I was 21 and first laid eyes on her on her now classic country album, Elite Hotel.
Same, since I was a scrawny 10-year-old in 1980 and my aunt was singing her songs. Die-hard fan every since.
Saw Lyle on tour with his Large Band last year ... amazing tour ... very tight band ... whew!
Che garbo, che classe questi 2 Grandi Artisti,da brividi..... da brividi❤ e Emmylou che naturale bellezza, con quei capelli d'argento.
BY FAR my favorite country song of all time. Sorry Hank.
Pontiac is such a good album!
Oh, she is beautyful and the young, also good looking Lyle Lovett can't stop to look at her.
Thank you for posting this video
Good combination Both great singers and great to listen to
Emmylou accompanies without upstaging. It's all about the song!
Pretty-much the definitive C&W song, in terms of structure, theme and harmonies.
Great song! I love his music.
I love this song!
love this song!
Sadness at its best...

@1MCOPE A little more western than country befitting Lyle's Texas roots. He's one of the few country artists I can listen too. Emmylou is another.

A New Jersey lady I knew long ago
And she was a lady I say
But she met a cowboy who rode on the rodeo
And he stole her heart straight away
The New Jersey lady she loved him so true
Another love she never had
But cowboys are lonesome and cowboys are blue
And they make the ladies so sad
Sing me a melody
Sing me a blues
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The Brazos she's running scared
She heard the news
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The New Jersey lady knew he loved her too
And you know she tried to hold on
But the rodeo life was the life that he knew
He had to keep drifting along
She never married and she never would
And all of the people they'd say
The New Jersey lady she just ain't no good
To follow a cowboy that way
Sing me a melody
Sing me a blues
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The Brazos she's running scared
She heard the news
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The lady she'd sing him to sleep in the night
And then in the morning he'd go
She loved the darkness and hated the light
Along with that damn rodeo
The New Jersey lady the day that he died
She covered him over with clay
And feeling the wind in the night as she cried
She heard the old cowboy say
Sing me a melody
Sing me a blues
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The Brazos she's running scared
She heard the news
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
Sing me a melody
Sing me a blues
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
The Brazos she's running scared
She heard the news
Walk through the bottomland without no shoes
Won't you walk through the bottomland without no shoes?

Emmylou Harris, would you not be interested to know who is in love with you, in the comments there is a ton of loving nuance, i hope you are flattered and happy to be loved!
the guys music is second to none well maybe hank williams
amazing that such a talented singer and performer as lyle doesn't understand hair
Damn, one can click 'like' only once.
What is the source of the video ? Is there a DVD ?
@justobe099 - Better question >

Too bad he doesn't give her more of the spotlight. She can sing.
Outta my way, rooster boy!
When will lyle lovett ever get some real public notice
@wettelander Great song, great duet, but I think the hair is debateable!!! (especially Lyle's) :-)
Emmylou enhances any song she duets on. Lyle is a great ongwriter/ singer. This could have done with being taken a tad faster.
Damn, love that fro... not nearly as much as his music though
@idgit2442 - I can attest to that as my beauty only seems to have increased with age. :- )
Emmylou didn't play fiddle. It was Scarlett Rivera?? Did I spell that right. You think every chick with long dark hair is Emmylou??
Damn what a beautiful tune, if you can get past the hair..
This is NOT Walk Through The Bottomland. This is Lyle's song right? Not one of the few really GREAT songs that Emmy Lou wrote. The one she wrote after GP's death. Right?

Oh...cool.Right. Thanks!

+Bill Lenz I guess we'd have to ask Lyle. Boulder to Birmingham seems more of a reference to Parsons and Emmy Lou.
Such great artists, such bad hair. Time heals all...
