  • -Certain films are a satirical and sometimes very funny deconstruction of the Hollywood machine but today's film is more like a swift kick to the nuts of the film industry. Think Black Swan but with indie-horror sensibilities as we dive into 2014's Starry Eyes.
-Today we're looking back at the film that made Terry O'Quinn in the eyes of some fans long before he played John Locke on Lost. The movie is 1987's The Stepfather!
-There's just something when it comes to the country of New Zealand and Horror Comedies. Yet today's subject is considerably less known. Hailing from the director of M3GAN, Gerard Johnstone, this horror comedy is full of big laughs, hilarious performances, and one of the more imaginative twists out there. So join us as we cover 2014's Housebound.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw series is dedicated to highlighting horror films that, for one reason or another, don't get as much love as we think they should. We know plenty of you horror hounds out there will have seen many of the movies we pick, but there will be plenty of you who have not.

The Stepfather 1987 is one of the best horror films based on a true story and Terry O' Quinn's performance was amazing!

I remember when people would talk about him on Lost and I'd be like "Do you mean The Stepfather?". I had no idea how many people didn't see it at the time. And you are 100% correct!

I remember seeing the Stepfather films as a kid. I think Part 2 was the first one I saw. As a youngster, I remember liking it enough to make me go watch the first one. I literally lived on top of a video store and would later work there as a teen so I had easy access. Seeing videos about a lot of these more obscure movies really takes me back to those days. Had a great upbringing in that place.

I just watched the Stepfather after seeing your video here. One can hardly ever go wrong with an 80s movie. I enjoyed it and yes Terry O'Quinn's performance is superb :)
Thanks for bringing that gem to my attention, JoBlo Horror team.

Stepfather was the first time I saw Terry O'Quinn. Later in life I was happy to see him in Lost.

I can't believe Starry Eyes was made with a budget of 50k. Its so good and shows that you really don't need to have a huge budget to make a great film. The story is the heart of the film and wow! It's definitely a great film. Creepy as hell and feels like its very real to current soul sucking Hollywood.

A lot of iconic horror movies were low budget indie productions (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, just to name a few).
Starry Eyes just goes to further prove that it is that low budget indie approach works perfectly with the horror genre.
      :)

Starry eyes really stayed with me and I even recommend it to friends. Probably eerily true to Hollywood indeed.

@@ItsaKindOfMagic86Thats why so many filmakers start in the horror genre. Low production costs making it much easier to b profitable regardless of quality. Look at tubi's horror catalogue. It nevet ends!!

WOW. How did you make a video about 3 of my favorite horror/suspense movies ever?
I loved 1987's The Stepfather as a kid. Probably my favorite in the genre.
Then I saw Housebound accidentally almost turning it off 10 minutes into it, only winding up being blown away at how much I loved it.
Fast forward to watching M3GAN because that trailer of the girl doing a weird dance in the hallway had me intrigued.. I wound up loving that movie, even watching it 3x in 3 weeks, it was so much fun.
and I had no idea that Gerard Johnstone was responsible for both previously mentioned movies..
There's been few "horror" movies I've liked as much as these, in between apart from one's mentioned in this video (Shaun of the Dead, What We Do in the Shadows)
    ❤💙

I stopped the video and watched it before the review. I ended up really liking it. Lots of goofy laughs. I did get an "oh my god" reaction of nostalgia to the "Hello Moto" ringtone. Never had that service but i remember the ads.

Housebound is one of the best movies to come out of New Zealand. Better than most of the shit coming out of hollywood, hope the writers' strike continues because they write shit.
