From the crowd pleasing Rocker to the arrogant heartbreak kid to the beloved show stealing showstopper to the cocky degenerate, the 1990s was the evolution of Shawn Michaels that saw him transition from tag team beginner to quite possibly the greatest in ring worker of all time.
I got two words to sum up this complete collection: love it! 👍

I appreciate how seriously Bret Hart took his character and the business in general. And it’s 100% to be expected- he was raised by a legendary wrestler, and earned his way from the lower mid-card up to headliner / championship status. You would take yourself very seriously, too! He was barely ever home to see his family, and was always out working.
Shawn seemed a little too cocky and like he was living a little too “fast and loose” outside the ring. Imagine how a very serious, professional guy (Bret) would view a cocky guy that thought he was a rockstar (Shawn). It speaks volumes that Taker, another guy who treated the business as a very serious lifestyle, sided with Bret’s perspective over Shawn’s attitude.
When he came back in the 2000s as a born-again, humbled guy, Shawn was MUCH more likeable. He also had matured as a storyteller and had the best matches of his career.
I wish we had gotten the chance to see mature Bret versus mature Shawn. I have a feeling we’d still be talking about that match today as a best-ever contender.

I have the same take with everything you said and I believe all 3 of these Legends would agree as well. Also yes, Brett and Shawn had more then a few great matches the way it was. But man, if they could have been on the same page with Shawn's head screwd on right as well, they would have given us so so much more. Arguably 2 of the best ever in-ring performers. Definitely in the top 5 without question, At that point, though, it's all a matter of a fans preference of who someone likes more. Anyways, good comment, I don't think you could have worded it or put it in a better way.

I can't remember when I read that Shawn and Marty would often fight, with Marty often coiming out the victor. When Shawn and Marty first paired up in the AWA they patterned themselves after The Rock 'n' Roll Express and took inspiration in their name from the Midnight Express, hence their name in AWA; The Midnight Rockers.
Side note: Verne Gagne (AWA owner) was afraid that people would confuse the name 'Midnight Rockers' with Rocking chairs, then wanted them to change their name to The Country Rockers.
Marty was paired with shawn in AWA and was seen as the leader of the group in terms of their teams look, direction ect. Shawn, being more ambitious than Marty only ever wanted the team to continue as a vehicle for more exposure for himself.
After The Rockers split, Shawn did indeed debut his new theme but as The 'Heartbreak Kid' Sexy Boy was his 2nd theme. 'Rhapsody in Blue' was his 1st theme which he used late '91- early '92.

I really wish we could stop focusing on his knee for the lost smile thing. In Heartbreak and Triumph, Shawn says that his mother was the one who said it to him. Given the fact that he was dealing with serious addiction and depression problems, I believe it. As someone who was addicted to pain killers for 15 years (I'll be 6 years clean this year), and as someone who has dealt with manic depression, I can sympathize with HBK. However, in HBK's own book he said that he was dealing with depression and addiction since the late 80s. He said "I didn't know if I was depressed because I was a drug addict, or a drug addict because I was depressed". He didn't have to forfeit the WWF title before WM 13. If HBK was able to compete with basically a broken back when he knew his career was over in 1998, then he would've done the same a year prior when he said that he "thought" his career was over in 1997 and he would've toughed it out until WM 13 instead of just forfeiting. He just didn't like Bret, plain and simple. And I'm one of the absolute biggest HBK marks ever. I grew up addicted to HBK. So, you would think that I have a bias, but I don't. Also, his "career threatening" knee injury put him on the shelf for 3 months. His back injury put him out for 4 years. Also also, HBK suffered the same exact knee injury back in 2005 and he still had a match against Triple H at Taboo Tuesday.
