Thank you so much for your appreciative words :) But believe me, there is not so much talent at work here, just a little bit of passion and practice wrapped in some editing. And don't forget, you'll only get to see the best outtakes here.. I was there for 2 weeks and these 3 minutes is all that is useable ;) The rest is so-so
At 0:58 I was certain you shot with the Avata. How did you get that descend speed on the Mini 3 Pro? The cars are moving normally so clearly not sped up footage..
This clip was shot with the Avata, not with the Mini 3 Pro. That explains the quick descend speed ;) Actually, all the clips are realtime. There are two or three short speed ramps in the video, but only to smoothen out the transition between two clips with similar movement :) (And the speed ramp at the clock tower, obviously) :)
@@t0mwhazzup aah, that makes more sense. You just cut the video in a way that suggested that "now we are doing the mini, and now we are doing the avata". I didn't question it until you had the "launch" clip of the avata, leading me to belive you completely separated the videos
@@adrianstensrud Yeah, in general you're right, the first part is Mini 3 Pro, the last part Avata. But in order to give a little tease in the beginning, I inserted a few Avata shots in the first minute ;)
I'm going to Madeira in about a month. When i watch your stunning video i'm sure to take there my drone. But as far i know there are crazy strong wind. Do i have to worry to loose my Mini 3 Pro? Is there really anything to fear? What advice do you have for Madeira :)
I wouldn't worry. It can be very windy but that doesn't mean that it is windy all the time in every spot there 🙂 Take your drone with you and capture that stunning island!! You will see when it's too windy to fly... and before it falls out of the sky, you will get a strong wind warning. I mistreated my Mini 3 Pro quite a bit in regard to strong winds. But never lost it because of that 🙂 So I cannot give any guarantee of course, but from my experience, it can handle a bit of wind 🙂
Thank you so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it :) Actually, really, really good. Initially I was afraid that when I fly behind a seastack, or, for example through the small hole between the sea and the rock, that I'd lose signal. But I didn't (it was approx. 500 meters away from me already at that point). I only lost signal once in Madeira, but that was in a situation when the drone was approx. 1,5 km away from me and I flew it behind a seastack. It was stupid, but you should not do that anyway... The fail-safe return to home function of the Avata worked very well though. I don't know what exactly it did during the minute I had no transmission, but it brought the drone back to a spot where I had transmission again. This minute felt like hours, though, I thought I lost the drone. But, I have to say that I have the FCC hack in use, so more transmission power then I'd usually have in Europe (CE is standard there). And I'd really recommend doing that because with FPV it's really essential to get the best possible transmission. Hope that helps!
Hey Tom! How was flying with the avata ? Especially in the winds ? I have it for testing for a week or so but... I'm not sure if I should keep it and sell my DJI FPV or not think about it (quality seems great, even more so with ND Filters but worried about high winds and it flipping ) 🤔
I was afraid in the first days in Madeira to fly because of the winds... but then I thought, I'll just give it a try because I went there to fly drones... and it worked out fine. Of course you feel the wind when flying, but if you have basic FPV skills, it shouldn't be much of a problem. I hope that helps 🙂
@@t0mwhazzup thanks ! That sounds just about right from what I've felt so far 😄 Did You fly with ND Filters ? This footage does seem like You did 🤔 One last question , how was the signal? In some shots I feel like with DJI FPV and Goggles V2 I would have lost the signal (like the dive down and then above the water) 😄
@@SebastianDylag Yes, in most (but not all) shots, I used ND filters. Always depending on what I need to get around 1/60 sec shutter speed. Signal was great most of the times, but I habe enabled the FCC hack. Not sure how it would have been in CE mode.
Wow. The sound and visuals are outstanding. Really amazing job Tom! I”m really curious what are the differences in flying ’feel’ between the two drones. What makes the Avata so good at those dynamic close up shots? Is it actually flying slower and the footage is speed up in post or you just have so much better control over the drone with the fpv view? Is the feeling of flying Avata so much different and obviously better? What are the biggest pro”s and con”s of both drones? Sorry for so many questions :). Perhaps you could make a film about your experiences with both drones?
So glad you like it! I really appreciate your comment! Well.. it's completely different. The difference in footage is obvious when you look at the video, I think. In general, all drone clips in this video are real time. There are only two or three speed ramps (e.g. the flyby close to the clocktower and in one or two transitions between clips to make the transition smoother), but apart from that it's real time. So the speed you see in the videos is the speed it flies with. The footage is just a small part of the difference, the big difference is the experience itself. Conventional drones are usually flown to capture video (or photo), the flying itself is not much of an experience and the control is pretty easy. Flying FPV is an experience itself, you have the goggles on, so it's very immersive. And when you fly fully manual like I do, you can basically move the drone however you like on each axis. The control is way harder to learn, you need to practice in a simulator before because the drone doesn't stabilize itself. I'm by no means good at FPV, but for such smooth and cinematic flights my abilities are good enough 😄 I always try to fly pretty close to obstacles/water/whatever and I wait for the day I'm gonna lose the drone because of it... I crashed in a canyon in Iceland a few weeks ago, but I was able to retrieve the drone and apart from having to change propellers, the drone was fine. The frame is really sturdy and was only a little bit scratched after hitting a rock with 60 km/h. But this is going to be the story of another video that's going to be published at some point this year... 😉 And thanks for the video idea, I will think about it! 🙂
@@t0mwhazzup Thanks for all the answers! And for inspirations and many helpful tips in your high quality videos. So FPV is not so easy... Well, even more likely I'm gonna get in that ballpark soon 😎 For now I'm just starting all the fun with my first drone, a brilliant mini 3 pro. The FPV will be next for sure, but I need to get much better at flying for that next step. Good to know it is so much fun to fly this thing. And that it can bravely take a few tough hits without complaining 😉. Happy flying!
@@DFD1 Well, for some it's easier than for others. I'd say I'm not very talented, it took me quite a few hours on the simulator before I had the confidence to take the real thing outside :) When you have a feeling for how to control the drone manually, it's absolutely manageable outside as long as there's enough space. So most of the shots I do are pretty easy when you have a bit of practice, but some shots in this video (especially those over water) were pretty close and it takes a bit of courage, precision and..... of course luck ;)
I am really happy to read a comment like yours. And I don't really mean to do understatement, but with a little bit of practice this can be done in a short amount of time. My style of flying is way easier than all that crazy FPV acro and racing stuff people do. I could never do that. But that rather slow and cinematic FPV stuff I do is really not that hard :)

now that the m3 pro is compatible with goggles and rc controller do you recommend that over the avata? i already have the m3 pro and want to use it for fpv
I have not tried it. But since you cannot do all the FPV stuff you can with the Avata (dives, flips, etc), I wouldn't really consider the m3pro with goggles a proper replacement for an FPV drone. If you just want to fly around with the goggles, it might be enough for you though 🙂

Hi tom what a beautiful video, i like to keep them all A roll B roll with also fpv, its genius… just curious with the video setting for avata i kinda struggle to have a good quality footage with them, use manual setting 4K60 with d cinelike (10 bit they claim) 120 fps framerate, and auto iso but the footage is always saturated and harsh when it color grade in davinci… Is there any advice how to make them correct exposure n how to color grade them, i follow your tips with the mini 3 pro and its work but not with avata😅😅😅
Thank you for your very nice feedback 🙂 Yeah the footage quality is not as good as on the Mini 3 Pro or other DJI drones, for that matter. I film in 4K60 with mostly 1/60 shutter speed and ISO to 100 (I don't use auto usually). I grade it like the Mini 3 Pro footage. The quality simply isn't as good 😔
I’m very surprised the Avata could pull out of those dives, i find it woefully underpowered. I converted one to the 3.5” axis flying and its made a big difference.
Well, you know... if you're used to a 400 bhp car, 150 bhp feel very underpowered. If you only know 150 bhp, then it's fine. Same with the Avata - it's the only FPV drone I've ever flown, so I guess I got used to pull out of those dives a little earlier than you would with a drone with more power.
Well how fantastic! You wouldn't care to share how you took some of those shots would you? Hats off to you sir, a fabulous video. If I may ask though.....did you do the whole ANAC 10mdays in advance file flight plan thing or is it more relaxed in Madeira than on the mainland?
Sure :) What do you want to know exactly about the shots? I don't know about that. As far as I know you can fly (as long as it's not a prohibited zone) without any flight plan. You just have to check if the airspace is unrestricted, and there is an app for it in Portugal. It's called Voa Na Boa.

Thanks for your comment :) Wouldn't it be cheaper to by the goggles and the Avata in combination? Yes, I've heard about that, but as I have an Avata already, I don't really think the goggle experience with the Mini 3 Pro can do much for me ;) Yeah, especially the water shots were all pretty close and it was on purpose. But yes... a few inches lower and the experience would really have been "immersive" 😅 You gotta take the risk to get rewarded...
I was thinking about that, it would have been cheaper on long term, but for now I want to see if I can squeeze more from mini 3 with that sistem.cheers!
@@t0mwhazzup no, I’m actually referring to some info I have from a source at DJI. They are concepting a drone that flies like an fpv but with a modified 3 axis gimbal. Not sure if and when it would come out tho.

@@shredgardener9231 Oh wow, that's nice to hear, it really means a lot to me! I'd always choose the frame rate that is compatible to the intended display device, and for RUclips and other online/social media content that is displayed on computer monitors and smartphones (60 Hz displays mostly), 30 fps is the way to go. 24/25 fps will not play back smoothly, it's simple math. Or 60 fps would also be fine, but this does not have any cinema-like qualities to it because it's too far away from the 24 fps cinema standard. 30 fps is close to that and plays back smoothly. I guess you know my video about this topic already 😉

Really? That's so cool to hear and means a lot to me when my videos inspire someone so much 🤗
If you buy an Avata, I'd appreciate if you considered buying it with one of my affiliate links in the video descriptions. This comes at no extra cost for you but supports the channel a lot. Thank you 🤗
Hi Tom, is there any way to contact you for commercial purposes? That would be great!

Brilliant work! Were any luts used?
Thank you so much 🙂 No, I usually don't use luts, I do the color grading myself.
I have made two videos that explain how to color grade and up the quality of your footage:

Amazing Shortfilm! How do u make those soundeffects of the sea etc during your flights?
I add them during editing, so you're not hearing original sounds there - drone video has no audio because you'd only hear the whirring of the rotors 😉
At 0:58 I was certain you shot with the Avata. How did you get that descend speed on the Mini 3 Pro? The cars are moving normally so clearly not sped up footage..
This clip was shot with the Avata, not with the Mini 3 Pro. That explains the quick descend speed ;)
Actually, all the clips are realtime.

But never lost it because of that 🙂
So I cannot give any guarantee of course, but from my experience, it can handle a bit of wind 🙂
I love Madeira, I love your shots from both drones, I love SFX and music as well as your colour grading! ❤

Thank you very much for your kind words :) What live drone show?
These FPV shots are sick! Great job mate! How the Avata's signal behaves between those rocks and cliffs?
Thank you so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it :)
Actually, really, really good.
@@t0mwhazzup thanks again for this super useful answer! 🙏
That sounds just about right from what I've felt so far 😄
Did You fly with ND Filters ? This footage does seem like You did 🤔
One last question , how was the signal? In some shots I feel like with DJI FPV and Goggles V2 I would have lost the signal (like the dive down and then above the water)
😄
@@SebastianDylag Yes, in most (but not all) shots, I used ND filters. Always depending on what I need to get around 1/60 sec shutter speed.
Signal was great most of the times, but I habe enabled the FCC hack. Not sure how it would have been in CE mode.

Mucho arte piloto…👏👏👏🤘😘

And thanks for the video idea, I will think about it!
Breathtaking! Your maneuvering skills really shine through in this film 👏
@@t0mwhazzup Regardless, I still believe it takes a certain artistic eye and skill to put together something like this :) Keep it up!

Mini 3 pro for me 🙌🏾
now that the m3 pro is compatible with goggles and rc controller do you recommend that over the avata? i already have the m3 pro and want to use it for fpv
I have not tried it. But since you cannot do all the FPV stuff you can with the Avata (dives, flips, etc), I wouldn't really consider the m3pro with goggles a proper replacement for an FPV drone. If you just want to fly around with the goggles, it might be enough for you though 🙂

Hi tom what a beautiful video, i like to keep them all A roll B roll with also fpv, its genius…
just curious with the video setting for avata i kinda struggle to have a good quality footage with them, use manual setting 4K60 with d cinelike (10 bit they claim) 120 fps framerate, and auto iso but the footage is always saturated and harsh when it color grade in davinci…
Is there any advice how to make them correct exposure n how to color grade them, i follow your tips with the mini 3 pro and its work but not with avata😅😅😅
Thank you for your very nice feedback 🙂
Yeah the footage quality is not as good as on the Mini 3 Pro or other DJI drones, for that matter.
Beautiful ...... !
Thank you so much :)
😲👏 you took so much risk with the avata I was like “no way” on each fpv shot 😅 well done !
I had the same feeling when flying! Lots of adrenaline while flying, believe me 😉 But I crashed 2 weeks later in Iceland 😉

Thanks for your comment :) Wouldn't it be cheaper to by the goggles and the Avata in combination? Yes, I've heard about that, but as I have an Avata already, I don't really think the goggle experience with the Mini 3 Pro can do much for me ;)
Yeah, especially the water shots were all pretty close and it was on purpose. But yes... a few inches lower and the experience would really have been "immersive" 😅 You gotta take the risk to get rewarded...
I was thinking about that, it would have been cheaper on long term, but for now I want to see if I can squeeze more from mini 3 with that sistem.cheers!

@@t0mwhazzup Initally with my mavic air from yester years i was already a 30 fps guy but swayed by a lot of drone people yapping about 24fps. But now i'm back to what i was thanks to you and your jaw-dropping videos.
