@@uhmuh7484 lmao I've seen u elsewhere in the comment section complaining about this same thing but did ya know that Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomins, wrote the relationship between Snufkin and Moomin to be kind ambiguous and to suggest possible romance? She was bisexual herself and had girlfriends and wanted to bring up homosexual themes in her works. It's subtle and the time period when the books were written forces it to be but it's there
@@clearsky1572 I'm not suggesting that Moomin and Snufkin would be gay just because the author has homosexual tendencies?? Tove herself has explained in her autobiography that Moomin is like her alter ego and Snufkin is inspired by her past lover Atos. Atos was like Snufkin a personality that could not be trapped down to one place and he loved coming and going by his own terms leaving behind Tove to pine after him and long for his love and companionship when he was gone, she has said that the relationship between Snufkin and Moomin reflects that. It can just as well be interpreted as a really strong friendship but it doesn't take away from the interpretation of other people who experience that there are deeper feelings running under. Also Moomin's relationship with snorkmaiden is very sweet and immature and dips into the sort of romance very young teens/kids have, those feelings are unpredictable and it also is shown in the series/books and can also fit in the interpretation that Moomin is sorting out his identity and could just as well love Snufkin and snorkmaiden both whether he realises it or doesn't
Moomin's relationship with snorkmaiden is a very stable safe place for him since moomin's character is potrayed as very sensitive, loving and settled down, whilst his relationship with Snufkin is the excited, adventurous and longing kind. It's clear that they wouldn't bide well together because of their different personalities and ways of living but they still manage to have this amazing companionship between them. People's adventures into romantic feelings are not always clear cut and neither do they have to be in literature especially with immature young characters like Moomin.
@@clearsky1572 I didn't mean that just because Tove is bi that means all her characters have to be gay as well and that's what you made my comment sound like hence I tried to clear up what I meant. What I meant by that was that she would not be opposed to writing gay characters despite her living at a time when that was looked down upon. I don't see how my point doesn't apply just because Moomin is probably going to inherit the house from his parent's and end up together with snorkmaiden? And yeah defining your identity means many things often a big part of that is discovering your sexuality and other parts of your persona. What I'm getting at is that there's no way to say that Moomin and Snufkin are just platonic or definitely have some gay relationship, what I'm suggesting here is that it is implied and Tove herself has put herself and her relationships into these characters but the readers can make of it what they will. Many younger readers identify with Moomin, they have close friendships with someone and get crushes and have these light hearted relationships with others. Many have partners of the opposite sex whilst having feelings of same sex attraction and they can see that in moomin's and snufkin's interactions with each other. You don't need to interpret it the same way but that doesn't mean it's far fetched for others to see it that way especially when snufkin's and moomin's relationship is strongly inspired by an actual romantic relationship that the author had.
