I actually liked Askeladd from the beginning tbh. Maybe because I respected his intelligence and he had a lot of charisma. He was definitely a mystery for the majority of the prologue and I love how his relationship with Thorfinn was so ambiguous.

Easily one of the best characters in manga, I could tell there was more to him than he let on when he asked Thors to lead his group. He was serious about it, but quickly understood it couldn’t go that way. Even then, any expectations I had about him were completely blown out of the water.

Askeladd is really one of the best character I ever seen over time. The fact that there was something more in him than just being a pirate and a warlord was apparent to me from the moment in which he fought against Thors. When he asked Thors to lead him and his men was revealing that Askeladd had something inside that was much more than the appearance. The problem with him is that he was manipulative and cunning till his last end. We will never know if Askeladd's real name was Lucius Artorius Castus, because that was just a facade to justify his act. He did that for the sake of Canute, to let the boy to become a real-life King Arthur, not the rightful king, but a righteous ruler. That's, IMHO, was Askeladd's ultimate goal, besides protecting Wales.
He never wanted to become King Arthur himself, nor to be an hero. He knew he had not the qualities to become the righteous ruler, and so he looked for someone that could fulfill that job. He failed, and so, realizing he was becoming old, he decided to mold a young prince in what he thought a righteous ruler should be. At the end, Askeladd died to let the boy to become that ruler.

In a way, Askeladd is as much of father figure to Thorfinn as Thors. He was everything he hated, and yet it was Thorfinn's understanding of Askeladd that he was able to fully grasp Thors' final words.

There's a pannel where thors asking askeladd if he has children to which he replies that no and thors says I see... To which askeladd replies no, why?.
At first I didn't gave it any thought but then when I saw his background and relationship with his father, he hates the danes yet he knows that he's half dane so it would be making more danes.
Askeladd does have a warped vision of a fatherly bond when it comes to thorfinn at least subconsciously, for him that is the relationship he had with his father.
Of course wales comes before it, his plan was for wales to being saved for that he needed someone that could both take power and was good or respectful enough to leave it alone, wjen canute came into his grasp as he both could have him take power and knew of his kind nature, and in the end he won.

I'd be willing to grant Askeladd the title of anti-hero IF it wasn't for the winter village scene. He had every man, woman, and child murdered to steal their rations. Also his honorless murder of Thors when he and his man could've just sailed away.

    • @thebygoneking
      @thebygoneking Год назад +1

He insisted to Floki that he be paid a portion of Thors bounty ahead of his death. If Askeladd had let Thors live, Floki absolutely would’ve gone to kill Askeladd out of revenge.
Askeladd is a brutal pragmatist in a world where pragmatism means murder and misanthropy. He has no personal lines he won’t cross to get what he needs, and that’s a dangerous man to deal with in any era, but especially this one.

Exactly. Askeladd expressed implicit self-loathing and conflict about being exactly what he hated.
“Become a monster to fight monsters”, etc.
He also made sure to separate himself from “Gods and Heroes” when telling his back-story in saying that, though he wasn’t either, “somebody had to do it” (in this case saving his mother, herself a personification/symbol of his people.)

My opinion of Askeladd is the same overall as when he was first introduced. That of being an evil person willing to throw away any sense of honor or morality to accomplish his goals and desires. He is still a very deep and well-written character as was explained in the video, and I love the author for writing such a well-constructed and provoking character. However, I am glad that such an "evil person" is dead and sent to Hell.
On I side note I also believe Thorfinn to be a very evil character as well. He and Askeladd are very similar in the sense that they are both were willing to commit atrocities and throw away any sense of morality to accomplish their end goals. For 11 years Thorfinn followed Askeladd and carried out his every order almost unquestionably, most of the time only complaining or demanding a dual with Askeladd in return. Thorfinn abided and aided in the slaughter of many innocent people while carrying out Askeladd orders/plans, only feeling slight remorse or nothing at all for his actions. An example of this is when that elderly woman and her daughter helped save/heal Thorfinn and concealed him from harm, only for him to end up betraying her kindness and leading the Danes to her village to slaughter everyone, including the elderly woman who saved him. At that moment he only felt slight remorse and quickly suppressed it.
Edit: Thorfinn ends up being one of those characters that represent how their motivation for revenge can utterly consume them leading them to become the true villains of their own story. A person who is willing to sacrifice anyone and anything in order to achieve revenge (their ultimate goal). They initially sought justice for the wrong that was committed against them, but along their path to achieving said "justice" they end up wronging others unjustly, and thus only creating more hate and desire for revenge. But in this case, the revenge would be directed towards the main character (Thorfinn for example.)
In contrast to Guts. I really love his charter over said some characters similar to Thorfinn because, to me, Guts represents an individual who seeks revenge in a more rightful manner. Guts does not actively go out of his way to harm or bring ruin to the "innocent".

I really like the way you portray the whole revenge theme. Im currently writing a manga myself that is revolved around revenge. But since revenge is a common trope in anime I kinda wanna change it a bit. And idk what to do to make it feel unique. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the matter dude :)

There is no afterlife in Vinland Saga. When a character dies they fade away into nothingness. That hellish place Thorfinn experienced during the farm arc was all in his head.

That was the world back then my dude. Life is finite, they lived pretty much in the Wild West on steroids back then and conquering new places and fighting was viewed as superior than human life and in a way it’s actually not wrong.

I like your video. But i dont think Askeladd never saw himself as the hero. He cleary regreted killing his father and blaming his brother. He saw himself in Thorfinn and wanted to show him how meaningles revange is. When Askeladd fought Thors he asked him to become the leader. He said it was a joke, but i think that he meant it. When Canute asked him why he didnt become a king. Askeladd answered he was just a Viking (a person he hated). He also sacrificed himself twice for Canute beliving he was the most similar to Aritorius.
In Thorfinns vision of hell Askeladd was sitting on a pillar and not a part of the fighting. It could be because Askeladd was always aware of his faults and the fact that he knew he was a evil man. And he hated himself for that and wanted to change.

  • @staubtuch4808

For me, he is a hero. I liked him from his first appear. I didn't like the fact, that he killed Thors but I could see, that he didn't wanted to kill him. I was hating Floki. I didn't like every action Askeladd did. But he was a fighter for his homeland.

askeladd was epic a better viking than most of the danes. but it is a shame he died to protect wales very martyr getting that christian allegory in. inthe story for the moment. he dies at 1014ad after 1066ad by 1072 ad the normans have taken wales south and mid mostly. but between that time there are many raids into wales but no conquest . only coastal settlement and winter stations funny its at this time the norse from dublin and waterford are more interested with trade and raids . also one thing you don't get in the over all story is yes sweyn in coqering england but there are many other viking bands raiding the uk and norse gael kingdoms establishing themselves.

3:42 wrong, the modern nation state and nationalism were inventions of the 19th and 20th century, what you mean is culture, language even. This is particularly important given that back in those days borders at least from our modern understanding did not exist, instead it was all about power projection and ones ability to protect your claims, not about drawn lines on a map.
