  • One of the most common and worrisome complaints that I hear in my office surrounds thinning hair, or loss of hair. In this episode, I’ll go through the major categories of hair loss, and how to diagnose hair loss correctly so we can create a treatment plan that addresses the root cause. The good news is that in the great majority of cases, thinning hair or even sudden hair loss can be treated effectively!

    Please know that high doses of biotin supplementation can interfere/ change thyroid lab results, or Troponin values( these are vital to diagnose heart attacks). I work at a hospital and we once had a patient whose troponins came back “normal” in spite of severe chest pain and abnormal EKG, we found that she was taking high doses of biotin, which lowered her troponin values to a point of normal.

    I had a receding hairline since high school and just wanted to say that a) there is no good treatment for it so don't waste your money, time and hopes on expensive treatments and b) there is nothing wrong with wearing a wig or a topper or any kind of alternative hair if you are not happy with your natural hair. Professional hair pieces don't look like roadkill any more, literally nobody knows unless i tell them. I am now watching friends my age getting really thin straggly hair that is also going grey, and I am so grateful that my beautiful wigs won't do that!

    Teriffically informative explanation about hairloss, Doctor. Thank you for that.
    At 68 but blessed with genetics of voluminous hair, I'm noticing some loss of thickening but it isn't an issue yet, as is the case for my girlfriend, 66, who endured life-changing deaths of her long-term partner and her Mother, within three years. I'll forward this video since although we're in the UK, I feel she'll be comforted to learn about some of the common causes as you've explained.

    I am 45 and I started losing hair in great proportions around 2020 after having covid twice and went two years losing so I cut it boy short. I took vitamins for one year and no results. Around 35 I started gaining weight slowly and it was so hard to lose. I went to my doctor several times to check my hormones and my testosterone was low but everything else was normal, she said. In 2022 I have a mini stroke and then gained 44 pounds in nine months but continued to gain until few months ago when I decided to eat for pleasure and only when hungry… so i eat meats, veggies and fruits like orange, pineapple and papaya since they help me with digestion. my hot flashes have reduced greatly, my weight is slowly dropping off and my doc gave me some estrogen cream to
    treat my prolapse. I am doing core rehab. I never imagined being 222 pounds. I was not that big when pregnant but a look like i am 😢 I was slim most of my life. And I can’t wait to fix this and get my health back. I have not felt healthy in 8 years. And I am beginning to have hope that I will be ok. I am doing lymphatic massages and somatic exercises to release trauma and stress. I am trying to rest more and do less. I love your channel and it has enriched my life. Thank you 🙏

    Thank you Dr. Susan for all of this detailed information! I took lots of notes. This is the first time I have been able to fully understand the hairloss issues and what is actually happening. It really helps to hear it explained in the clear way you have described everything.
    I would like to know if you can tell us how much oral minoxidil, propecia and biotin is recommended to help with hairloss. Or if you can mention what is a guideline or parameter for these or what is effective in terms of dosing. I have already messaged my dermatologist about it but am not expecting she will have heard of it (or she would have already prescribed). I am looking into getting an appointment with you. My OBGYN works with a compounding pharmacy but I don’t think they prescribe oral minoxidil since I have already asked her about hairloss.
    One other question: does oral progesterone help block DHT?
    Thanks again!

    Hi Dr. Susan, I have been noticing extra hair shedding over the course of six weeks now. I am thinking, it could be due to changing the dose of the estrogen patch. I was on the low dose. Did not notice any hair shedding. I was taking a higher dose and noticed shedding within two months of being on The patch. I was also noticing Extreme sensitivity in my breast. Now I am back on the lower dose. Two weeks to be exact. Noticing new hair growth, but still shedding. could taking a higher dose of estrogen cause this shedding? Thank you for all of your great knowledge and information you put out on your channel❤️😃

    I just recently was seen and given hormone pellets w testosterone because my testosterone was at 1.1. I am also being given progesterone tablets. I was having peri symptoms and hairloss was one of them. I also was having 3 periods in a month in half after going a full 30 days without a period. I went to this clinic and this is what they prescribed. Is this good?

    if it's just normal thinning from menopause, will taking HRT at a higher dose grow back the hair over time? (2 mg. estrodiol, 8mg. testosterone and 200 mg progesterone). It's been 3 months and I am not noticing a difference yet.... but I know it could take a year or 2, right?

    Dr. Susan, does the outcome or success of Platlet Rich Plasma depend on the experience of the doctor? It seems like you have had a lot of success with it. My dermatologist said it is expensive and doesn’t work.
    I have since switch doctors and no one seems to offer any help with female pattern hairloss in my 40’s.

      @folksin42 Год назад +1

      I also heard you have to continue using it for as long as you want to grow hair. But we already brush our teeth twice( minimum) daily and it's a habit and no big deal. So consuming hair treatment daily is just another thing to do and becomes habit and no big deal.

      Estrogen effects thyroid hormone. So some women need thyroid medication when starting hrt. That could affect your hair.

      Estrogen helps hair loss, she probably got testosterone in her pellets. That will cause hair loss if too high a dose.
