YO LA TENGO - THIS STUPID WORLD / 2023 / MATADOR / INDIE ROCK
5/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Don't listen to Fantano. This album is fucking awesome.
Almost a 40 year career and not a single bad album released. 5/10 for this album is scandalous.
Dude wtf, this is their best album in years lol
Thats not saying much
@@RB-.- yes it is
I actually loved There's a Riot Going On, probably in top 5 of theirs for me. Agreed though this one is way better than Anthony is giving it credit for. I feel like it gets better every listen.
He's shat the bed again. This album is fantastic. It's their most cohesive record for many years.
Stop putting so much weight on some random vegan's opinions. lol
"Oh boy, Anthony has a review for one of my favorite albums of the year so far!"
Overall I'm feeling a light YoLa-out-of-10go
If the album was called, “This Smart World,” then you would’ve given it a 10.
🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
This is simply classic Yo La Tengo. Full stop.
Yeah, it's incredible. YLT entered my sphere in '93 with _Painful,_ and they've remained a favorite. From a metal-only guy till '91, College radio exposed me to music I may never have heard.
Man don’t even know who’s singing Tonight’s Episode
Melon, I’m about 97% sure James sings on Tonight’s Episode, not Ira.
Was just about to comment this, yeah.
yeah their voices don't sound at all similar lol
It’s James on record and live.
To be honest, I am not surprised that Anthony did not like this album. There is no right or wrong way to appreciate music, and it is apparent that we all have certain aesthetics and timbres that we gravitate towards. Anthony is definitely a lot more forgiving and appreciative of louder, aggressive and abrasive melodies (see death grips, black midi etc.). On the flip side, softer, meditative and somber guitar driven albums do not gel with him (see war on drugs, waxahatchee etc.). This album falls into the latter, and that is just not his vibe, and that’s ok.
Personally, I love this album. I love putting this album on at night when I am winding down as I find it very conducive to mind wandering (mind wandering is actually good for you despite the negative connotation associated with it) and allowing myself to analyze where I am at mentally.
Albums like these are therapeutic for me, but I can understand why others may want something a little more “urgent.” I would rate this album a solid 8/10, and I would highly recommend listening to it when you are feeling a little introspective. Either way, I always appreciate Anthony’s opinion
Wonderfully written. Thank you!
>On the flip side, softer, meditative and somber guitar driven albums do not gel with him
he gave TBK a 10 though lol
@@unhxlysilver1688 Yeah, OP kinda stereotyped Antknee by saying that. Agree or not, he takes things on a case by case basis.
This is a great comment!
@@unhxlysilver1688 TBK is meditative yeah, but in no way is it soft or somber imo
I liked the album a lot
From noisy dark parts
To poppy tunes within a great simplicity
So thumbs up
Can't wait for the future video where Fantano warms up to it. On first listen it didn't do much for me, but on 2nd listen I realized it's at least a 7. I've been following YLT since the early to mid 90s -- one of the most consistent bands ever and always good live.
Pretty sure Fantano listens to the albums many times before reviewing them. Often see people in the comments assuming these are first listen takes but I don't think that's the case
@@elesh.n I never made the assumption that he only listened to it once.
I liked it immediately, the first two tracks were an immediate trip, I don’t understand how anyone can dislike it
eh, he doesnt really like a lot of 90s indie. not that i liked this album but i think its just not really his bread and butter
@@NukeTelAvivToday You might be right. Of the 26 different critic reviews for this album on the Album of the Year website, his rating is literally the lowest of them all.
I actually loved this album, but now I think it's pretty mid, thanks Fantano
maybe you're just not high anymore
Maybe you just can’t think for yourself, child.
Lmao
you do know you are allowed an opinion of your own too?
Yeah I disagree. This album is great, fallout is one of the best singles they've released in years, easily a 7 or higher
I would also give it a very high score, but I guess my opinion is now worthless.
I’m leaning 8 or a light 9
5/10 WHAT THE HELL MAN!? (never listened to it)
It's pretty fucking good, actually. More like a 7.
Dude can't even identify the lead vocalist on Tonight's Episode (James, not Ira). How then can one even begin to take his review seriously 🙄?
I actually really enjoyed this album and can’t wait to get deeper into the YLT discography
Please do yourself that favour. They’re a one of a kind bands and have amazing albums
YLT are one of the greatest indie rock bands ever
They’ve got maybe the best nineties indie rock runs of any band. Start with Painful, I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, Electr-o-Pura, or And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
painful and ATNTIIO are my favs
@@badlula17 Much better than the one-note Spoon for sure!
We’re waiting on that logic review
not surprised by this considering his opinions of every other great indie rock act of the 90s. really not worth taking this review seriously honestly. this album is a great, mature meditation on the disaster world we find ourselves in. every album these days tackles these themes, but yo la tengo does it with careful thought. high recommend, so disappointed with how underrated this album has been, easily one of the best of the year. very rare to see a band be this good so late into their career. at least pitchfork was right on this.
Aselestine is a gem for sure, Georgia still sounds great.
I’M DRUNK AND I’M WATCHING FANTANO!!! I MAY HAVE A PROBLEM!!
Im high and im watching Fantano. I am cool though and chilling
I'm sober and watching Fantano. I suddenly feel the need to find some hard drugs ASAP.
You’re so wrong for this
L this is an 8 get some taste
commom t boss W
But are you comparing this to their other work?
@@yourboibigbrain7353 why does it matter? an 8 is an 8 even if all of the other projects are masterpieces
Oof. One of the most disappointing listens of the year so far. 5 is generous.
@@yourboibigbrain7353 they’re an incredibly consistent band in general but if you must it’s their best since And Then Nothing, which was released 23 years ago
The title track is literally the best song on the album wtf
The fantano effect is really weird
A positive opinion makes me want to like the album
But also
A negative album also makes me want to like the album
This albums washes your most recent 8 melon
I really liked it. A super mix of noise and cosmic drift. The sort of music I want when I put on Yo La Tengo. I think I'd push it up around 8--not as perfect as some of their work, but as catchy and satisfying a record as I've heard this year.
this stupid world as worst track? man :(
Wrong
Wtf I'm literally listening to I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One for the first time as you upload this am I dreaming
Definitely listen to ‘And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out’ if you haven’t yet, that’s my personal favourite of theirs.
@@OhMystii That's next up for sure 👌
@@Squadala9001 Electr-O-Pura gang
@@meyers323 Great album 🔥
@@Squadala9001 Noo listen to Elect-O-Pura after it's wayyy better than ATNTIIO
I wish I could quit looking at the top of dude's head.
Album is great. Definitely a return to form for YLT.
Wrong-o, Anth-uh-knee. I'd say strong 7, light 8, in pitchfork terms I'd say 7.8, in Rolling Stone terms I'd say, "Get off my lawn, sonny!"
With a pitchfork in your hand.
I personally loved it. Vibes upon vibes
Sir Fantano, what's wrong wirh you??? I mean seriously, wht's wrong with your ears?????
Can’t wait for your new album to drop, Melon
If this was called To Pimp a butterfly and was made by kendrick, you would have given this a 10
easily their best album since i can hear the heart beating as one
suggestions for records to review:
Archspire - Bleed the Future
Vola - Witness
Amenra - De Doorn
Caspian - Dust and Disquiet
Pain of Salvation - Panther
Agent Fresco - Destrier
first bjork now this, fantano you are wrong, WRONG WRONH WRONG
Definitely would agree that it's not one of their classic efforts, butI enjoyed Sinatra Drive and Fallout far more than Mr. Drop. Side 2 was good not great imo
Small fact check: James McNew had lead vocal duties on Tonight's Episode, not Ira Kaplan
Damn dude. Best album since 2006. 8/10 for me
The grey wires in the album cover look someone hitting it from the back
Disasgree. That's all. Just wanted to say that. You are entitled to your opinion Anthony, but yea, I highly disagree. At the very least a 7.
This album rules. Their best in a long time
A bit mean spirited to give this a 5 while dressed and styled as a man who should be giving this an 8 at worst.
A 5? Are you serious
yo do Logic’s college park bro!
Boo la Fantano for this score
Ira doesn’t sing on Tonight’s Episode, it’s James
nah this is a crime
AFTERLYFE WHEN
Hey Anthony, I’m a new fan and have been watching your content constantly as of late. I’m a huge Trivium fan, and I would definitely be interested in hearing your opinions on what I consider one of my favorite albums ever, The Sin and the Sentence.
The rare but delightful mustachioed fuzzy melon
I get that you don't like the album that much Anthony, but you didn't have to make a bunch of racist Mexican stereotypes about it.
it's not Kayne so Fantano doesn't care
Man, Melon. Please shine your head, please.
This is a DAMN/10, at least.
me gust
Theory has it that the album title is the band’s reaction to Anthony’s MBDTF review.
I love that album title
I just can't agree with you on this one dawg :/
wrong
You would have given it a 10 if it was called “This Vegan World”.

NOT GOOD: Hardy's the mockingbird & THE CROW
NOT BAD:
James McNew is singing on Tonight's Episode, not Ira Kaplan. That explains the more Richmanesque vocals.
Fantman trying his hardest to avoid putting out the cold hard truth that Yeat's Afterlyfe tops Don Toliver's Love Sick
I disagree! I give the album an 8/10, the only song that doesn't really work for me is "Until It Happens" as I don't particularly care for the groove or Ira's vocals in it. "Fallout" and "Aselestine" are great singles, but the last three track run is my favorite, especially the closer "Miles Away," it's beautiful and sounds like it could be a really nice bookmark to their long career. But they also just might have an 18th album in them too lol
Damn, and I thought I wasn't feeling this as much as most people, haha... Umm, yeah, I think it's currently being overrated, but 5/10 feels kinda harsh... It's like a strong 6, light 7, for me.
Absurd review.
Put down the crack pipe Fantano! This record is better than 7 out of 10 albums that you review. YLT with keep making solid records long after the latest band flavor of the week you endorse implodes after two or three uneven records yet I find myself coming back for more reviews.
When will you do a review of the new gorillaz album for me it is an decent 8

Review Summer Sun!
Massively underrated and cruelly maligned album by YLT
I love it when you speak Spanish Anthony ❤
I have honestly never listened to Yo La Tengo and I like this album , I’ll be checking out the rest of there albums for sure.
im glad that youre still reviewing indie stuff
time for that logic review anthony
Folks complaining about a group like Yo La not changing enough sounds pretty much the same to me as someone complaining about Tom Waits not switching it up enough. They're an icon?
Haha I wouldn't have thought to put it like that but you're so right
You got to hear the new Elvis depressedly album.
I thought he would’ve loved this album honestly
Easy 8
5/10 is crazy
Can You review the last Pile Album please ?
James McNew sings Tonight's Episode. I get the feeling I liked this one a bit more than you did lol
L
Can you review brentalfloss
Huge YLT fan here, but you’re absolutely right. It’s got some echos of their past sounds, especially reminiscent of And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out, but there’s just not the same edge or inviting intrigue in the sound and vocals.
Just saw them in Seattle. Genuinely one of the worst shows I’ve seen in my life.
This is a decent Yo La Tengo album
So Let Her Burn for YUNO?
Totally confused by this rating
Anthony is just doing a controversial take because he wants people to come watch this video and see his great outfit.
I give this review a light 1 only cause you’re alive
Aw....I like Apology Letter
Wait there’s a band with my name?
You should check out the new See You Next Tuesday
You see yo la Tengo live and call their guitar boring or bland I fucking dare you
You should review the logic peanuts beat tapes
