  • More progress on the benchwork to round out the ends of the center peninsula, add an area for Hillyard and helix up to the third deck, and the grading up and through the Cascade Tunnel section.

    I was glad to hear you mention keeping 3 feet of clearance for your electrical panel. Well done. Regarding the potential sag of the center peninsula holding the return loops; take your 2x2 and turn them horizontal directly under the benchwork and attach them to the sides of the last 2 upright 2x4 diving walls. They can support the cantilevered benchwork above and remain hidden.

      Thanks. A lot of people encroach on egress windows and electrical panels, but it wasn't worth it for me. Model railroading is always a compromise, so I "just" adjusted the layout accordingly.
      Good idea on the supports for the center peninsulas. I'm currently using 45-degree supports, but also not happy with them. They take up too much space for the future skyboards, I think. I might try that idea of using horizontal 2x2 instead. Iain

    Largest private nscale I’ve seen. Looking forward to see.👍

      Thanks! It's definitely on the larger side for a home basement layout that isn't being built by a club. Thanks for following along to see how I progress. Iain

    You mentioned Hwy 522 going to Monroe. If you go back far enough to Woodinville you’ll pass my place. Nice shoutout to UNW. I’ve made contact to try and join.

      Oh very cool! Yeah, I think I'll take a little bit of modeler's liberty in 522 at the west end of Monroe to help with scene transition, we'll see. And all the best with UNW, they're a great club - say hi to Keith and Phillipe for me! Iain

      Thanks, Anthony. It's definitely starting to show its size now that most of the benchwork is complete! Iain

    My next layout won't be multiple decks because that kind of climb isn't good for the engines.

    • @gncascadedivision
      @gncascadedivision  Год назад +1

      Each to their own. Good luck with your next layout. I've never seen anything conclusive that grades are bad for engines, and have seen / ran on many layouts with grades or helixes. Iain

      What works for me is a nolix. The whole layout has a 0.66% grade and no hidden track disappearing into a helix for "hours" at a time. With a “fixed” grade of 0.66% a typical saw tooth grade profile as seen in my part of the country, as well as flat areas for yards and industries can be had easily.

      Yep, that's definitely an option, and again, is how I'm going to try and do most of the lower level to middle level connection. Depending on where you model, can certainly make it look natural. Iain

    Anthony! I'm sitting here telling my wife I finally found someone whose doing a HUGE "N" scale layout! Love every single video. I know its a huge undertaking and I look forward to seeing more! I'll spread the word! Keep it up and love the content!

      Thanks! I think N scale works really well in a basement like this as you can really go big with it. I'm looking forward to making more progress in 2023 on the layout. Thanks for following along. Iain

    You can stiffen that center wall by adding a triangle brace from the bottom of the legs to the 2x4 at the first deck level.

    • @gncascadedivision
      @gncascadedivision  Год назад

      Yep, thanks. I think I'd said in this video or another that I plan on going back through and adding 45 degree braces on pretty much all the legs, and bracing on that center peninsula. That's one of those boring tasks I know I need to do but get distracted by other things, but will be done before any track laying starts so things don't shift afterwards. Iain

    I just had to subscribe after watching this video. This is truly an ambitious project to say the least.
    Looking forward to future developments!
    Cheers from Canada!

      Thank you! Yes, definitely ambitious, but I think I'm at the point where I'm able to at least somewhat pull it off. Thanks for following along. Iain

    Hi, just subscribed, I’m building an N Gauge/scale model railway myself, my first. I have just discovered your channel and there was me thinking I had a large N Gauge model railway!🤦🏻‍♂😂
    Really looking forward to how it all turns out, I really do like watching a layout grow from the bones up, cheers for now, John

      Thank you! This is a little on the large side, but you can still have an awesome layout that's less involved, and you'll probably be running trains quicker than I will! It is fun to see layouts right from the start though, yes. Thanks for following along for the ride. Iain

    I've been pondering getting into model railroad for like 8 years. I've finally settled on doing my first layout as a 2x4' (n scale), and then this video series is suggested to me. Calm down, youtube, I'm trying to set realistic goals for myself! 😆It doesn't help that I have a 26'x13' empty room just doing nothing, but I know myself well enough to know the "big layout" would get started and never finished if I hadn't already gotten major failures out of the way, honed my skills and increased my efficiency. Yes, 2x4' it is, for now.

      Hah, yes - learn on a smaller layout first! Figure out what you like and don't like about the process. Try out different scenery techniques, and see how you like wiring, etc.
      I started on a 4x8ft HO layout, then an 11x11ft around the room layout, and worked on a couple of large club layouts in N scale for a number of years. You learn lots of little things along the way that help.
      That would be a great sized room for N scale in a few years though ;) Good luck, and thanks for following along here! Iain

    Hi Iain, I just found your channel and am enjoying watching your progress. We actually have a lot in common - I have a large, peninsula-oriented, multi-deck layout in N-scale, running Digitrax, WiFi, JMRI and signaling. 🙂 I lived in the Northwest for 21 years and I'm originally from England. Maybe we were separated at birth? Anyway, I'd love to chat privately if you'd like. What's the best way to reach you? Keep up the great work!

      Thanks for reaching out. I guess I'm not too far wrong in thinking a peninsula multi-deck layout controlled by Digitrax and JMRI is the way to go! Feel free to reach out at i_foulds at live dot com
